Quad-core CPU?

Hi All,
We are looking to upgrade of database machine for OCS 10g. If we purchase a machine with a quad-core cpu, will the database be able to take advantage of it? Or are we better of with multiple dual-core processors? Or one dual-core processor? Has anyone upgraded recently? Or have any insights?
Thoughts would be greatly appreciated...

All X series ThinkPads, tablet or not, have the CPU soldered onto the board, and not socketed. This has been the case from the days of X20, almost 15 years ago.
So no, you can't swap the CPU unless you are in possession of proper re-balling equipment along with the skills to use it.
Furthermore, a BIOS support for a quad-core CPU would have to exist, which I doubt is presently the case on X series.

  • Seconds() function issue on Quad Core CPU

    Hello,
I am noticing some timing issues using Seconds() function on a Quad Core computer. The optional boolean in Seconds() is True (by default).
With Core 2 Duo CPUs, the seconds() function is reporting elapsed time (since TestStand startup) correctly. However, I noticed on a Quad Core CPU that the seconds(True) function reports ~0.5s every 1 second. In other words, seconds() elapsed is incorrectly reported. Has anyone observed such issue?
When the boolean parameter is set to False [i.e. Seconds(False)], there is no problem observed on Quad Core CPU.

    Howdy Troy,
I don't have a quad core to duplicate your issue, but it sounds plausible. Since this is an older version of TestStand that was developed before multicores went mainstream, this very well may be expected behavior.
You might instead call directly into the Windows API using kernel32.dll--particularly one of these functions:
    GetSystemTime
    GetSystemTimes (for multicore)
    GetTickCount
External Link: MSDN: Time Functions (Windows)
Judging from the nature of your question, I think GetTickCount would suit you best.
    I hope this helps!
    Warm regards,

  • Quad core CPU in x230T?

I realize that even if it were possible, cooling would be the primary issue. But I am curious if, say, an i7-3612QM might work in the socket on the mobo. It is rated at 35W, just like the i5-3320m currently installed in mine. Via Intel's ARK, they should both work in the 988 socket on the x230T's mobo.
    Solved!

  • Jvm on quad-core cpu

does anyone know some good literature
about how the jvm can utilize
the parellism power of a quad-core cpu?
even without spawning a java thread, or otherwise
trying for parallelism, the jvm will run faster because....?
its up to xp pro to utilize the 4 cores, right?
the jvm can't "known" about the 4 cores?
please give me some links to good
    documentation
    thanks.

    System.out.println("Core count: " + Runtime.getRuntime().availableProcessors());This code returns '4' for my twin dual-core machine.
Some of the classes in java.util.concurrent make use of this method.

  • New Quad Core CPU

As you all know Intel will be introducing the new quad core CPU soon. Is Apple going to introduce several totally new design desktops equipped with quad core CPUs? Or is Apple only going to offer an optional upgrade to quad core CPUs for their current three Mac Pros?

    At first.
I think technology hit a wall... a heat dissipation wall.
The plan seems to be to reduce the speed and power and
compensate by brodening the force-area. This reduces
escaping power and produces more efficiency per power
unit. This is just simple coefficients.
Like if I had 8 procs each running at 1GHtz it's going to
aproach the speed of a single 7 or 8GHtz unit but at a
fraction of the power consumption and a magnitude of the
efficiency. This shift started five or six years ago.
    http://tweakers.net/ext/i.dsp/1066381706.jpg <- 5 years ago
Maybe more. 64way units are already here. Though I bet we
don't see them on desktops for a good while. When this
reaches it's limits who knows what's up next? Chemical or
Atomic Phase processors? Shrug. World War Three not
    withstanding..

  • Licensing and quad core CPU`s

Hi I hope someone can help me here.
We have CF8 enterprise edition installed on a 32 bit OS with 2 dual core CPU`s.
What I want to know is, can I use the same license to migrate CF8 to a new server that has a 64 bit OS with 2 quad core CPU`s.
Also are there any other issues to take into account?.
Any thoughts from anyone who has experience with this kind of thing would be appreciated. Thank you :-)
P.S I tried asking Adobe customer support but it was a waste of time, they couldnt understand the question. My question does make sense right?

Seconded. Once of the nice things about their licensing is that it actually specified "physical" cpus rather than just cores, as Microsoft stuff often does.

Probably because your set up doesn't support HDCP.

  • Is there a quad core cpu for my macbook 13in pro early 2011 with the socket P8400

Is there a quad core cpu for my macbook 13in pro early 2011 with the socket P8400?
The duel core is not doing the work i need done....

You cannot upgrade the CPU on a notebook. They are integrated onto the motherboard. Sell the one you have then purchase a new one with the quad-core CPU.

  • Can DIAdem 2012 use multiple processors on Quad Core CPU?

    Hi,
I am running scripts in DIAdem 2012 which take upwards of 10 minutes to complete.  However, I notice my CPU usage never goes above 15% during this time.  My understanding is that that generally suggests the software is not 64-bit compatible and therefore not taking advantage of the other cores (I'm on a quad-core i7).  I also have 12gb ram and that is not being heavily taxed by DIAdem either.
Anybody know how I can squeeze some extra juice out of my computer to help DIAdem run faster?  Thanks!

    Hello Mark,
Multi-core support only makes sense for very few operations in DIAdem (i.e. Large amounts of data being sent through an FFT routine) and is currently not supported. Also, 64-bit only makes a difference when working with very large data files.
That said, there are ways to improve processing speed in DIAdem without using extra cores or 64-bit versions of software. My best suggestion is to get in touch with our senior Product Support Engineer (Dr. Brad Turpin) and combing through your Script(s) to see where there is potential to improve processing speeds by optimizing the Script(s). I'm not implying that your Script(s) are badly written, I just know from experience that changing a few things in the Script(s) has lead to reduced processing times by using optimized functions in DIAdem that you might not be aware of.
Dr. Turpin can be reached at this email address: brad DOT turpin @ ni DOT com
Please reference this forum thread when you contact him.

  • T400 Quad Core CPU upgrade

I am thinking of swapping out the processor in my T400 Type 2764-CTO, I would like to purchase a intel Q9000 to put in the place of my P8600. I know they are both the same socket but I am wondering if there are any other issues within the motherboard o BIOS that will not accept this processor. Any help would be appreciated?

this is a user to user support site. Lenovo never really releases these sort of CPU compatibility list, apart from what it is in the hardware manual.
But i can tell you that the quad core that you want to put in will not work. The only laptop of that class to support quad core is W700.

    Bios 1.1 I get I/O error with 1.3 so I can't update
Here is my setup and settings:
    MSI P6N Diamond
    Settings:
Advanced Menu: (press F4 after entering menu)
CPU Feature --> Execute Bit Support - Enabled
    CPU Feature --> C1E Support - Disabled
CPU Feature --> Set Limit CPUID MaxVal to 3 - Disabled
CPU Feature --> CPU TM function- Disabled

    Intel EIST - Disabled
    System Clock Mode - Manual
    FSB Clock - 1333mhz
Memory Clock - 667mhz (To have 1:1 memory bus, It's actually slightly FASTER than using DDR-800 timmings because I can run DDR-667 at 1T)
    CPU Ratio - 9
Advance DRAM Config: Manual - 4, 4, 4, 12, 1T, and Auto for rest in that order (Note, these are timmings for my Patriot LL RAM)

    Mem Volts - 2.0V
    NB Volts - Default
    SB Volts - 1.50
    FSB VTT Volts - 12%
    Spread Spectrum - Disabled

Finally it worked.this what I did I cleared cmos twice and rebooted to windows after each time.Once again thanks for your help now I am ready to oc this sucker. Does anybody know were I can find a good guide for this board and CPU  to oc?

  • ThinkPad X1 With A Quad-Core CPU

A few months ago, I came across an Anandtech article suggesting the X1 will have a quad-core i7 option by the end of summer. Well summer is almost over and I am wondering if any Lenovo staff member can confirm or deny the claims from this article. Thanks!

    Someone high up in Australia.
I don't think Lenovo can tell you much about future potential parts list as this may affect sale.

  • P35 Quad Core CPU shut downs

My CPU is shut down from somewhere because temp reading by BIOS is over 115C after only 20 seconds.
This happened when I was installing a new SSD. Before that never.
    BIOS is AMI (I think) V1.1.0 L69.
Any way to stop BIOS from reading CPU temp? Or any other tip is greatly welcome.
    Thanks.

  • K230 cpu upgrade quad core

I'm trying to upgrae to a quad core cpu on my k230 but when I used cpu-z to look at my chipset it says p35/g33/g31 and I looked it up and those are three different chipsets that support three different sets of cpu. So, my question is: what is the best cpu (quad-core, hopefully) I can get on this computer?

Are you sure that your chipset supports the 1333MHz FSB of the E8400? Seeing as how the E7300 operates at 1066MHz FSB, this may be a problem.
Download and run CPU-Z. Go to the mainboard tab. Post the information shown for chipset and southbridge controller.
