Quad Core Reboots when it Sleeps

Hi,
Just got my new Quad core iMac at the weekend, but having one particular issue which is annoying.
If I put the i7 into sleep mode, and then try to wake it several hours later, it appears to have shut down. ie: If I hit the enter key to wake it (as I previously did), it reboots itself.
If I try the same thing after only a few minutes it works fine.
Energy saver is set with all options ticked, and a 3 hour "Computer Sleep" time, and 1 hour "Display Sleep" time.
Any idea's guys?
Thanks

OK so no answers, well I'll put this up here anyway just in case it may help someone in future.
After a quick call the AppleCare, I shut down the computer, and started it up, holding down the Option/Apple/P/R keys all at the same time.
Wait until you hear two "Bong"'s, then release the keys.
Once the machine starts, the power management system will have reset itself.
Seems to be working fine now!
Have a good week guys.

  • Powermac g5 quad core reboot issue, led etc.

Hey guys. Gals. Whomever. Have a g5 quad core that has been bullet proof solid until recently. Annoying little red led popped up. (under the 1st ram slot, which co-incidentally is empty.) Then a second red one (Under 4th ram slot, 1" or so in from the edge of the board) went on..
When both comes on, nothing happens..
What has been happening is this.. one red led is on, and the computer spontaneously sleeps. I played around a bit with istat pro, and think it may have been because the fans were running full blast, and the temp was still rising. (no coolant leaks, etc). I set the performance to "reduced" and all seems well.. Apple guys suggested re-installing osx with an archived installation to save all my other stuff, and I figured "hey, why not.."
Then it got weird. Computer will NOT restart. If I restart the computer from apparently any state, it simply makes the tone, both led's come on, and it goes to a grey screen with a mac apple on it and does nothing else. Eventually the fans kick on full blast, and I have to hold the power button to turn off. And that is after inserting the disc, running the little prompts, and having the computer restart it self.
    I have seen
-file folder w. question mark prior to apple
-flickering of the screen when boots up. (white, then black, then desktop etc)
    I have...
    -checked vid cable for tightness
-removed all firewire devices (only had one a high speed camera card reader)
-unplugged everything and hit the pvram reset button
-removed the battery on the motherboard
-shut the machine down, stuck the osx disc in, and restarted.
all to no real avail. The machine boots and works fine from cold. Will NOT restart.
If the osx disc is in, it goes to grey screen with apple on it, and after like 20 secs the fans go on full blast, and the dvd winds up to a zillion rpms. Nothing more..
I have a apple wireless aluminum keyboard, and have tried to boot with the cmd option p r ,or o f settings and nothing happens. not sure if the machine recognizes this keyboard early enough in it's boot to be of any use.
    Currently
    -no led's on.
    -reduced performance setting
    -can't restart computer
    -can't install/reinstall osx
    Thoughts????

bought machine new, but come old os in 2005. upgraded to this one and lost original disc in a move. D'oh.
    No thermal runway errors..
in fact today no mention of sleep at all.. These may be of interest..

2/18/09 9:19:36 AM com.apple.loginwindow[35] System shutdown time has arrived
That seems to correspond with me manually shutting it down..
I fired it up with the disc in the drive and it went further than before... actually went to grey screen w apple and rotating disc thing. Then the lights came on. I booted it with the plexi shield off.. The plexi light went on (yellow) and when it was all said and done (Hung up) it had more lights on than before..
One light above 1st ram slot
one below ram slot (over temp)
    checksum light (as you wrote)
    Yellow shield is off light
    red light under that one..
I can read the descriptions on most of htem, the red under the yellow got away from me.
I will have to take it in to get fixed.. BUT theproblem is this.. there is no one near me.
I called apple yesterday and they said "XX" ct, which is 2 hrs and a boat ride away...
There are some regular computer techs in town but they have been less than impressive..

  • Compressor 3.0.5 wont use Quad core on iMac

I am compressing HD footage down to SD dvd files so that i can put them on DVDs. I have all the batches running currently on my iMac 27'' 2.8 Quad Core.
When I look at the processor usage on iStat Pro, it says that I am only using 46% of my processor power.
Currently it is taking hours and hours to complete this project. And when I tested the video on my MBP Duel Core it processed at the same speed as the iMac. Something is wrong with this picture. Do i possibly need version 3.5...?
    slfusion

No. looked for Clusters the other day, but figured i shouldn't waist my time if they just did what compressor does. Perhaps i should have searched deeper.

  • Quad Core 4TB vs 8TB - Controller upgrade or just better HD selection

So having just ordered a new 2.66 Quad Core yesterday when the max hard drive capacity was 4 1TB drives I'm wondering if today's improvement to 4 2TB drives is worth canceling the order and reordering.
Is this a change to the drive controller allowing for the installation of larger drives? - or is it simply that the Apple store now offers 2 TB drives as a custom option?
    Thanks.....

It's simply that 2 TB drives are now available that aren't overly expensive. There is no practical limit to the drive size you can install in a Mac Pro.

Since I upgraded to OS 10.6.8 from 10.5.x my 2x3GHz quad-core Intel Xeon desktop spontaneously turns off as if I pulled the plug. Mostly it happens when there is no open software and it's in the sleep mode (because it spends more time like that), but it has happened while I'm working. It just suddenly quits.

This is a suspicious sign of power supply failure. I would have that checked into. Others who have had similar problems have had the power supplies replaced which fixed the issue.

  • Dual Quad Core - wake from sleep problems

I have a brand new Quad core 2.8 ATI Radeon, and have experienced both wake from sleep problems within the first week of ownership, more than once. Namely, restart on wake, and/or corrupt graphics-frozen on wake. I haven't called AppleCare, but my question is is it worth it? Is it thought to be a software problem, or a hardware issue? I don't want to go to a lot of trouble if any replacement exhibits the same problem (or worse), but at the same time I feel it is a real issue and should be dealt with under guarantee. What should I do? Suggestions please...

There's lots of anecdotal data in the forum here and elsewhere, but the bottom line so far is that nobody knows except perhaps the Apple folks that are working on it.
No one that I've seen posting has identified even a common thread...some machines have the reboot from sleep problem, some have graphics issues, some have both (I'm in the first camp...reboot from wake but no (touch wood) graphic issues.
It wouldn't hurt to call Apple and get your issues on record; it helps them know the extent of the problem.
Your warranty is for a year so it's not immediate, especially since there doesn't seem to be a lasting fix available. Resetting SMC and/or PRAM works for some...for a while...
Right now I'm simply not sleeping the machine (I don't normally do it anyway) and waiting for Apple to come out with a fix. My bet is on a software/firmware fix (there are reports that the problem does not happen in bootcamp/windows, which more or less rules out hardware). But that's a sort of educated guess.
People have returned the machine only to get the same...or worse. Again, I'm not rushing into that.

When I activate puppet warp, the mesh appears over the image and I can place the first pin.  However, when I go to add the second pin, Photoshop crashes. I have tried with on a new, blank file, with just a few lines on it, but, as soon as I place the first pin, the image disappears, and then, as soon as I click anywhere else in the image, Photoshop crashes. I have followed all the online advice about settings under the Preferences/Performance interface, but nothing fixes the problem. Can anyone please help?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Time Machine should be enough to make a backup of your files. Also, it should back up all folders, so open System Preferences > Time Machine > Options, and make sure that there are no folders included in the excluded items list.
If you want to create a bootable clone of your hard drive, you need to use an app like Carbon Copy Cloner or the Disk Utility's Restore feature > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU7.html

Why is it that the DIMM 4 only has numbers in it? All the others have all zeros?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, Windows 7
They have been calling their notebook a MacPro for a year. Or is it this?

  • Bay 1 or bay 2 when installing a 120gig SSD Boot drive with 10.8 into a MacPro 3.2Ghz Quad core ?

Im about to install a 120gig SSD into a MacPro 3.2Ghz Quad core. It shipped with a 1TB Hitachi Ultrastar HDD Sata III, that runs 10.7 and is the boot disk running form bay #1. I plan to run 10.8 on the new SSD and use that as the boot disk.
Should I swap over the Hitachi HDD and SSD so that new SSD boot drive is in bay #1 ? If so am I correct that it would be okay to download and install Mountain Lion on the SSD using bay #2 first and then swap them over once installed ?

Thanks. FYI the planned build is this...
Bay 2 - BOOT DRIVE. 120gig SSD running OS 10.8 plus all apps (although not sure whether to wait a while regarding upgrade to 10.8 ? )
So far Im quite happy with 10.7.3 and the machine seems very stable
Bay 1 - 1TB HDD running OS 10.7.3 (so can boot from this HDD disk if required to should the SSD fail (if or when ). This is disk already running 10.7.3 as boot disk now.
Bay 3 & 4 - On horizon...    x2 1TB Western Digital Black Caviar HDD set up with RAID '0' stripe. Not sure on whether to use a RAID 0 or not yet....    Might just go with one 2TB drive... TBC.
BACKUP:  3tb external HDD or Synology DS411j NAS drive
So from what I understand once I've installed the OS on to the new SSD along with any apps, use Carbon Copy Cloner to make an fresh image before I use the system...    is that correct ???

  • When are the faster i7 quad core (2.7ghz) chips going to ship in the MacBook Pros, Intel announced them over a month ago.  Trying to make a buying decision.

We can't speculate, when it appears it will appear.
Are these mobile processors? Because that will answer your question right there.

  • Rebooting when waking from sleep

Hello all, my early 2009 Mini reboots when waking from sleep. How can I get it to wake up normally? thanks,

In the interest of getting better advice, can you add a little more information to your post?
How is the mini being put to sleep? What's the procedure being used?
Does the front panel white LED slowly pulsate as it should when the mini is sleeping?
How is the mini being awakened from sleep?
Describe as best you can the chain of events going from the sleeping mini to reboot.

  • Macsafe 85w still not enough when running Heavy program on Macbook pro 2011 Quad Core

Is there any official announcement from apple on how macsafe 85w works & design flow or diagram..??
We know the magsafe 85w is not enough to run macbook pro quad core i7 and their family.. But there must be some reason why apple only allow maximum 85w only.. rite
I run this multiple test on my Macbook Pro early 2011, 17" 2.2 Quad core i7, 8G ram, to proving that the 85W is not enough.
-Im running this test on both OSX & win 7
-the battery capacity is 20% when i running this test
-the power adapter "macsafe" is plugin when i run this test
    1) macsafe 85w turn to green to stop charging when rendering HD movie in Final Cut pro 7 in OSX ( but then it will turn to orange to charged again after you cancel the render)
    2) macsafe 85w turn to green to stop charging when playing high graphic game such "Razor F1 2010" in Win 7 ( but then it will turn to orange to charged again after you quit the game)
    3) macsafe 85w turn to green to stop charging when editing AVCHD on Sony vegas Pro 10 in Win 7 (it will turn to orange to charged again after you quit the program)
    4) when the baterry reach 100%. then I run all of 3 heavy program above.. the baterry will drain slowly until 93% then it turn to orange to charging again.
(this will happen only when you run heavy program) 85w macsafe itself also not enough to run these program.. still need little battery support..
As i know this will happen to all macbook pro since before Quad core model. You must run heavy program, then you can determin this systoms..
Lastly, I really hope that all of this symtoms are the "macsafe work design", & not the macsafe fault... & really hope this symtoms will not damage the battery because regullaly charge on & off.
Maybe This is why new macbook pro design,, you cannot take out the battery... It still need the battery support also, while plugin..
    Thanks &
    Sorry broken english..

"Maybe This is why new macbook pro design,, you cannot take out the battery... It still need the battery support also, while plugin.."
Yes — but only when you're working the machine very hard. Most of the time, 85W is ample.
"But,, we need the official announce by apple regarding this issue"
No you don't. That's how it works. What good would an announcement from Apple do you?
