Quad Core Versus Core 2 Duo

I am going to upgrade to one of the new 27  inch iMacs. I use CS4 Premium Design Suite, PS, IL, ID and a little bit of DW.  Does anyone have a comment or thought on any real benefit to a Quad Core processor? Do any of these apps support the multi threading that makes use of quad core technology?  The little bit of research I have found on the internet suggests that there is not any significant performance improvement with the current software such as CS3 and CS4. The exceptions seem (and only seem) to be with some CAD applications and high end video editing.
Any input or factual data would be greatly appreciated.
Floyd

Most Adobe products are written for multiple processors, and can benefit from more cores.
How much benefit you see will depend on the document size, and the exact operation used (some can't be accelerated using more cores).

  • Dual core versus quad core?

Is there a noticeable difference in speed when comparing a dual core versus a quad core iMac where the advertised speeds are essentially the same, say -- 2.7 ghz CPUs, both running the latest Mac OS 10.82, and iLife, iWork, or MS Office suite programs for MAC?

Chances are for the type of work you're doing an i7 iMac would be a complete waste of money. Where  you may benefit is 5 years from now if your work flow changes a lot where you use apps that draw on the power of an i7. However  none of can look into a crystal ball and decide today what we will need years down the road so if you want to bet safe, buy as much as you can afford.

  • Intel Core 2 Duo -- Quad-Core Intel Core i7

I am a first time Mac user and a friend of mine was getting rid of his iMac Intel Core 2 Duo, never been opened, brand new out of the box, sold it to me for $1100.00. So being that I'm going to school for Graphic Design I jumped at the opportunity to own the iMac. Now that I've been using it for the past two months, and am in love with it. I'm wondering if it's at all possible to instal a Quad Core Intel Core i7 processor? Being a PC user since the stone age I understand the in's and outs of doing it the PC way. With a MAC though I have no idea how it works, or if it's even plausible. Would I have to take it to "Area 51" to have them do it? Or would I have to fork over the extra cash to buy a new 27" iMac Intel Core i7. Which I know the wife will be thrilled to hear....
    Any help would be appreciated.

In your case, the point may be mute. Apple usually starts the warranty period when the Mac is shipped; when you buy from an authorized reseller and then register the product, the warranty period is then started on your purchase date. However, buying it from a private party is different - the original date prevails. You might want to just try this: go to the Apple site and enter your serial number - it will then display any warranty info:

My personal choice is to get the Applecare; it includes 3 full years of phone support as well as repair/replacement coverage and, if you live within 50 miles of an authorized service provider, you can ask for in-home service at no charge (if the problem has been identified via phone support) - to me that is, indeed, priceless. My previous iMac had a faulty USB port (a minor thing); since that is part of the logic board though, the entire thing was replaced in my home free of charge (I've heard the usual amount for a logic board replacement is close to $800 or more).

  • HT3209 New $799 2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 MINI cannot rent 1080

I have the new $799 2.3GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 MINI and I cannot rent 1080 iTunes movie, this is silly because the cheaper $599 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5  meet the Spec to rent 1080 movies.. I didnt pay more to get less function.. What can Apple do to FIX this!!!!
Minimum system requirements for HD 1080p1 content
Mac system requirements for HD 1080p1 content:
Mac OS X 10.5 or later
    iTunes 10.6 or later
2.4 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo or faster processor
At least 2 GB of RAM

Since there is no option on the configuration page
in the Apple Store it is pretty obvious that you can't.

  • How do I transfer contents of hard drive on PPC iMac G4 to a new quad-core Intel Core i5

Although my PPC iMac G4 still works OK, I am beginning to realise the time has probably come to get a current model in order to keep up with all the advances that have happened since I bought it about 8 years ago: I will probably get the new quad-core Intel Core i5.
As this will only be my second computer, I am wondering how I can transfer all the stuff on my hard drive onto a new computer and how easy it will be,given the apparently outdated connections on my G4 like USB 1,and possibly other things I don't know about.I am running 10.4.11.
              Any tips gratefully received.

As Allen indicates, Setup Assistant appears automatically, since you do have firewire, the transfer should be speedy, depending on how much data are on the G4.  The firewire on your G4 is FW400, your new Mac has FW800, but you can get an inexensive adaptor that will allow the connection, since the ports are different.
You don't need an external now, but I strongly advise getting one, with a drive as large or larger than your new Mac, you should clone/back up frequently, I use SuperDuper!  which will allow automatic backups.

  • Live CD x86_64 not working on Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU

    Hi,
I wanted to install the x64 version of Arch as I want to make use of the full 4GB ram my notebook has.
However, trying to boot the live cd for the x64 version allways results in a reboot after the kernel is passing on the init scripts to arch and arch is trying to load the acpi modules. Using the 686 version it works.
So am I mistaken in thinking that the Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU supports 64 bit?

Ok, disabling ACPI in the grub kernel line seems to fix the problem. I think it's weired though, that it works with the 686 version... guess a bug report is in order.

  • Buying a new Macbook Pro. Deciding b/w this add on: 2.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7 vs.  2.5GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7? Is it worth the extra $250?

Buying a new Macbook Pro. Deciding b/w this add on:
    2.4GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7 vs.
    2.5GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7?
Is it worth the extra $250?
    What's the big difference? Thanks.

Upgrade RAM yourself through macsales.com for $60.  Use the remaining $140 of Apple's mmeory price and upgrade for $150 to hi-res (1680x1050) and anti-glare.  I never regretted that upgrade on mine.
    My humble opinion.
Sorry ... I just did the math and that puts you $10 out of pocket ...

  • 2.7GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7 vs 2.0GHz quad-core Intel Core i7

I can't decide which Mac Mini should buy, Mini with 2.7GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7 or the server version 2.0GHz quad-core Intel Core i7, of course I'll upgrade it with 8 GB memory and SSD drive.
So what are you guys thinking of 2.7GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7 or 2.0GHz quad-core Intel Core i7?
    cheers

my dilemma is if i go 2.7ghz i5 with 8gb of ram and the 750gb (7200rpd), after i buy the magic mouse and the keyboard, i'm already into $1367.00....
where as if i got a imac for $1399.00 i'm looking at a 2.5ghz i5 quad core with 8gb ram and a 500gb hard drive, with the amd graphic chip. plus i'm also getting a 21.5" led screen. where as with the mini i would have to hook it up to my existing monitor or even share it with my existing computer.
i love the look of the mini, but it is really hard for me to justify spending that much money having to buy all the "extra's", just have a working computer. when i can just pony up $32.00 more and get a whole sytem...
please help me to justify buying a mac mini.

  • Suitable ethernet cable for my new Imac 27-inch iMac 3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 and old imac 1 GHZ PowerPC G4

I am looking for a Suitable ethernet cable for my new Imac 27-inch iMac 3.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 (Mavericks 10.9.4) & old imac 1 GHZ PowerPC G4 (10.4.11) for transfering files, documents, photos into my new intel mac from my old power PC imac.
Can anyone please advise me which suitable ethernet cable would be suitable for tasks.
    Many thanks
    Niall

Note, the iMac G4 1 Ghz only supports 10/100 base-T.  Firewire is up to 4 faster with a cable such as this one:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/HA833ZM/A/belkin-firewire-800400-9-pin6-pin-ca ble-2-m66-ft
    and adapted to this one:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MD464ZM/A/apple-thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapte r
    http://www.macsales.com/ may offer cheaper cables.
And since you are migrating from a G4, be sure to make your files portable to newer data formats before transferring.  Old Appleworks/Clarisworks files are not compatible:

  • 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel core i7     WILL IT WORK WITH FCP?

I am planning on purchasing the new IMAC 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel core i7 27" screen for work with FCP. The requirements to install FCP state in relevent part:
ATI or NVIDIA graphics processor (integrated Intel Graphics processors not supported).
Does this mean that the 2.8GHz Quad-Core Intel core i7 27" screen will NOT OPERATE FCP. I know that the Quad-Core Intel i7 is an upgrade for the system should I stay with the basic NVIDIA graphics processor?

I understand there is a difference between the "graphics cards" and the Processor and Memory?
    Graphics Cards:
27-inch model with dual-core processor, one of the following:
ATI Radeon HD 4670 graphics processor with 256MB of GDDR3 memory
ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics processor with 512MB of GDDR3 memory
    27-inch model with quad-core processor:
ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics processor with 512MB of GDDR3 memory
I am going to purchase the quad-core processor which will come with the ATI Radeon HD 4850 processor with 512MB of GDDR3 memory
The Processor and memory according to Apple Specs are as follows:
27-inch models only, one of the following:
2.66GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 processor with 8MB shared L3 cache; Turbo Boost dynamic performance up to 3.2GHz
2.8GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor with 8MB shared L3 cache; Turbo Boost dynamic performance up to 3.46GHz; Hyper-Threading for up to eight virtual cores
I would like to purchase the 2.8GHz quad-core Intel core i7 processor
This is where my concern is when FCP says (integrated Intel graphics processors not supported)!

  • Best RAM to buy for a 27" 2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7?

    Dear all
I'm brand new to Apple computers and would therefore appreciate any advice you can offer relating to RAM.
    I will soon be purchasing a 27" 2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7 complete with 2TB hard drive.
I also plan on purchasing 2x4gb RAM sticks separately but from reviews that I've read I see that not all ram is created equally...
Thus far I have discovered the following brands: Kingston, Komputerbay and Crucial. I would be most obliged if someone could let me know what the best brand is for the ram... I have found Komputerbay to be the cheapest but I've read a review from someone who said they didn't find it to be a good performer so that made me think it's best to pay a bit more.
Thank you for reading and I look forward to hearing your replies
    Kind regards
    Kate
P.S. I'm based in the UK

    Dear all
Thank you for your prompt responses - most appreciated!
Roger, I was particularly pleased with your answer as last night (after much internet research) I decided to go with Crucial... They were also offering a 10% off 'one day only' discount which seemed too good to miss! I purchased the RAM for a good price: £198 including discount for 2x4gb sticks - the same RAM averaged £250 on Amazon.
I will be ordering the iMac on Friday. Doubtless I will be back online thereafter to clarify that I have installed the RAM correctly; I haven't ever installed RAM before but given how easy it looks and the cost savings involved I thought I'd have a crack at it!
In total I will be running with 12gb RAM - no idea whether I actually need that much or not but I'd rather buy the best of everything from the outset so that I don't need to tweak things at a later date... Also thought a high amount of RAM would be advantageous given the screen size etc.
    Again, thanks to you all.

  • How much faster is the 2.7GHz Quad Core Intel Core i5 than the 2.7GHz Dual Core Intel Core i5?

    Hi there,
I'm considering buying either a Mac Mini (2.7GHz Dual Core Intel Core i5) or an iMac (2.7GHz Quad Core Intel Core i5). I'm just wondering what the difference in speed is between the two different chips. If both had 4GB of memory would the iMac be a lot faster than the Mac Mini? I'm a graphic designer so I'd be mostly using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
    Many thanks,
    Richard

  • 2.5GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, featuring 8MB L3 cache and Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.60GHz.

Why the 2.5GHz quad-core Intel Core i7 processor, featuring 8MB L3 cache and Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.60GHz.

The question is, is it worth the extra cost on the MacBookPro.  Is the performance tht much better??
