Quad core

Hi hope someone can help me out here?
My brother in law has just bought a new HP  laptop 1337tx  amd quad core cpu.
He asked my why his laptop was running slow when browsing and opening programs.
He runs win 7 64 bit now I told him maybe his cores are not turned on so I went to control panel system config and selected his cpu only showing 1 core running so I changed it to alllow the 4 cores to run.   But when he restarted his laptop he was presented with the blue screen ? So we changed the cores bact to 1 restarted works fine  so we tried again 1 at a time   2 cores then 3 and 4 everytime we changed the cores blue screen.
So a friend of his said just start the laptop back to default yeah sure that will work but he will still be using 1 core when he tries to change the cores same problem blue scrren.
Under the task manager it clear shows only 1 core being used so why can we not turn the 4 cores on ?   I suspect that his cpu or motherboard is faulty
Any help please

Hi Russell,
Try the following.
As you have done already, launch System Configuration, select the Boot tab and select Advanced Options - if there is a tick in the box next to 'Number of Processors:', click the box to remove it.  Click Ok, then click Apply and Ok in the remaining window.
Restart the notebook - what happens?

  • Please to help rookie with quad core on P35 Neo 2 (MS-7345)

I bought a home built computer (specs below) for my sons almost a year ago and have had nothing but trouble with it.  After I finally realized that the graphics card was over-heating it worked better for a bit after replacing Radeon 9600 with some crappy one.  Then I reinstalled XP and seem to have lost drivers for some of the functions of the MB like sound and networking.  Presently it is an impressive looking paperweight with fantastic specs.
It does boot to XP and has internet connection now that I stuck in a NIC card.
I was foolish enough to install and run microsoft genuine advantage and, because it didn't pass, have to read about it every boot and login.  So I'd like to reinstall XP again.
I do have System info for Windows (SIW) installed.
I bought system so sons could play Call of Duty 4.  When I try to launch COD it gives message:
    "Error during initialization:
    Miles sound system initialization failed.
Make sure you have your sound card's latest drivers and DirectX installed."
I have installed latest DirectX but do not know what to do about sound card as it is function of MB, I think.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as to next steps or what further info I would need to gather to solve.
    Thank you!

Thank you again for that page.  I had looked (in vain) for this because I did not receive the MSI cd with this computer.

I dl'd all of the files and began to install from the bottom up.  The "Intel INF Drivers for 3/4/5 Chipsets" went fine but in the 'read me' for "Intel Matrix Storage Manager Driver" it says that if none of the supported RAID or SCSI controllers are present in the Device Manager/IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers then your computer is not in RAID, SCSI or AHCI modes and these drivers are not applicable.  Does that makes sense considering the type of hard drive?  Do hard drives have drivers? (apologies if this does not make sense)
Also, the "Realtek PCI-E Ethernet Drivers" only contains dll, system and a security catalog file.  I do not know what to do with these to install.

  • Crazy to install CS2 on Quad Core 64 bit Windows 7 notebook?

I've been a video producer/director/editor since 1970 and have witnessed most all the progress and insanity of the "corporate wars" to dominate video production and later, video editing.  I no longer see any reason to differentiate between still photography, video production, editing, web authoring, print production, graphics, CGI, CAD etc...ad nauseum. My dream has long been to have one very powerful laptop that could do most everything that a creative person desired on location anywhere in the world.
My new notebook is an ASUS Quad Core G71GX with 6 GB RAM - an Nvidia Geoforce GTX 260M - and 2 - 500 GB, 7200 rpm hard drives - Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit OS. These days I shoot most video using a Canon SX1 IS at 1080 30p and the files are playing back beautifully on the 1920x1400 display at full frame rate. So for me that covers the basics. I will be upgrading from Windows 7 Home Premium to Ultimate shortly. Does anyone have issues/questions about the platform?
As to the software . . . I have been using Adobe stuff for 20 years or so.but did not get into their video editing products until Premiere 6.5. Than I jumped in with both feet and became a beta tester for the CS2 video collection. I still have my complimentary Premiere Pro 2.0 and it still works on my older XP Pro notebooks.
But now we are here in 2010 and all the major PC platforms are running 64 bit Operating Systems and I just figure that I should hold out for a true 64 bit Master Collection [which many people call CS5]. In the meantime I decided to install my CS2 Creative Suite and Premiere Pro 2.0 just so I could have the benefit of these programs while I am waiting for the 64 bit to release.
I purchased my CS2 back in 2005 as a download and last night made the attempt to install it onto the ASUS. As expected the serial number did not work so I called Adobe Installation support and got started after they prompted me for the "challenge" code. When I entered it the installation began nicely UNTIL the first folder [CS_2.0_UE_Ret_D1] finished loading and UP POPPED a window saying "Please insert CD #2" with only an OK button. Well, I didn't have any CDs because the suite was delivered as a download way back when and there seems to be no way to get to Disk 2 folder.
I finally decided to Quit the install when up pops a window that says [paraphrasing]. Your Photoshop program on Disc 1 has been verified and so try again to install. I said OK and up pops a window with all the various programs and the option to select Install. I selected each one [except GoLive because I now have Dreamweaver CS4] and proceeded. I sort of kluged my way through the transition from D1 to D2 to D3 to D4 folders and by all indications had a successfully installed, registered and activated CS2 suite on the ASUS notebook. Restarted the machine.
Opened Photoshop and up comes an error message "Your Adobe Photoshop user name, organization or serial number is missing or invalid. The application cannot continue and must now exit" "OK", which I pressed and Photoshop closed. Checked the other CS2 programs and none of them would open.
I would appreciate any pointers on how to get CS2 Creative Suite to install properly since Adobe Tech Support says such installation help is out of date and recommended this forum.
BTW: I run Videography Lab and am the "seminal author of videography". OCT 1972 American Cinematographer. I have a different take on the meaning of videography than most folks. After 38 years of research and contemplation I believe "Videography means 'I know to write' or conversely 'writing my knowing'" The platform that I've been talking about is the technology tool that enables such communication in "the Age of Videography" [Miller Freeman Publishing - 1996].
Call me crazy and than help me get this sorted out

PS: Does anyone beside me expect a sudden and dramatic shootout between Final Cut Studio & Adobe Creative Suite soon?

    Hi Michael--
Upon continued research we found your statement "CS 2 isn't compatible with Windows 7 32-bit no less 64-bit." not quite true. We grant you that, in it's raw state, Windows 7 will not install, activate, register etc. CS2 programs. That's been the Adobe position for quite a while.
Now that we have Windows 7 in hand and can play we found that if you have Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate edition you can acquire for $89.95 and download/install in an hour or so "Windows Virtual PC" and "Windows XP Mode".[Note: This feature is not available on Home editions].
We purchased the platform and once it is installed we had a "Windows XP platform" on our Windows 7 machine. From that point forward the installation of CS2 and many other of our old favorite programs was a snap. We've opened and worked with Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign etc. with no problems.
And, by the way, Premiere Pro 2.0 intalled easily on Windows 7. We're testing it now with some sub-1080p projects.
As to the long nagging problem of Adobe Installer not recognizing the downloaded CS2 CAB files during installation, we worked around by just saying OK when the installer asked for the next disc and immediately clicked on the desired disc in a seperate exlorer window which contained all the download files.
So that's the workaround for us. Now we wait to see who wins the race to enchant users with 64 bit editing and imaging suites.
    Thanks for all your help.

  • Using a Mac Mini Server quad Core i7 for FCPX ?

I am a student trying to
configure a final cut pro X edit system with a budget of around $4K.
I have over 400 hours of video (some Hi-8 but mostly mini-DV tapes).
For the Mini-DV tapes I plan on ingesting video into FCPX
directly from the camera via firewire DV. I will be using a Sony GV D800 to ingest
the Hi-8 tapes via firewire DV as well. I already have a 30" Apple Cinema Display.
H.264 will be used to deliver finished content to the web and/or Blu-ray.
I was leaning toward the macbook pro 17" but then I realised that a Mac Mini Server
could be configured with the same number of cores and RAM for less money.
    Mac mini Server
2.0 GHz Quad Core Intel i7 -- same number of cores as macbook pro 17"
    8 GB RAM
750 GB Serial ATA Drive 7200rpm + 256 GB Solid State Drive
Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter
Apple Magic Mouse + Magic Trackpad
    Other Peripherals:
Promise Pegasus 8TB R4 Raid System in RAID 5 configuration or equivalent
Sonnet Echo Express PCIe 2.0 Thunderbolt Expansion Chassis with
Matrox Compress HD MAX encoding card
    LaCie d2 Blu-ray 12x
Do the extra cores in the server make up for the difference in GPU?
(2.7 GHz Mini dual-core i7 with AMD Radeon HD 6630M graphics processor with 256MB of GDDR5 memory) VS (2.0 GHz Mini Server quad - core i7 with Intel HD Graphics 3000 processor and 384MB of DDR3 SDRAM shared with main memory)
Am I thinking about this configuration the right way? Is there
any overhead given that the mini will be a server? Anything missing?
    thanks for your help,
    Tom

  • UPGRADING AND MIXING MEMORY ON MY MAC PRO QUAD CORE DUAL 2.8 (Xeon)?

    Hello,
I have a Mac Pro Quad Core Dual 2.8GHz (Xeons) with 4GB of memory (2 x 1GB Apple modules + 2 x 1GB other brand - Shown as "Manufacturer 0x855D") and now I want to fill the other 4 memory slots by adding an additional 16GB (4 x 4GB modules) for a total of 20GB of RAM.
    My 2 questions are:
1.- In which order/pattern should I install these new 4 X 4GB modules along with my original Apple 2 x 1GB modules and the "Manufacturer 0x855D" 2 x 1GB modules the best way (for better performance)? - I have heard stories that if I do it improperly, I could slow down my Mac Pro...
This is how I have them configured right now:
    Raiser A / DIMM 1 = 1GB (Manufaturer "0x830B") - I assume this is the Apple memory, right?
    Raiser A / DIMM 2 = 1GB (Manufaturer "0x830B")
    Raiser A / DIMM 3 = Empty
    Raiser A / DIMM 4 = Empty
    Raiser B / DIMM 1 = 1GB (Manufacturer "0x855D") - How can I find which manufacturer is this?
    Raiser B / DIMM 2 = 1GB (Manufacturer "0x855D")
    Raiser B / DIMM 3 = Empty
    Raiser B / DIMM 4 = Empty
2.- What brand would be most compatible to work with my Apple 2GB (2 x 1GB) factory memory? Kingston? Crucial? Mushkin? iRam? Corsair? OWC? (Does OWC sell their own brand? or which one do they carry?-its not specified on their web)
Thank you so much in advance for all your help!

About RAM installation in the Mac Pro
    Mac Pro memory arrangement photos
    Mac Pro Memory Configuration
    Memory Tests- "2008" Mac Pro
Ram should be installed minimally in matched pairs and optimally in matched quads. This means the memory modules are the same size and specifications. They should also be equipped with the Apple-certified style of heat sink.
Brand really doesn't mean much as long as they work.

  • Memory arrangements in iMac i5 quad core (mid 2010)

I used to run 8 GB of ram in 4 modules. The upper two slots were occupied with the 2 samsung 2GB modules that came with the computer. The lower two slots I filled with 2 more 2 GB ram modules from corsair. These 8 Gb of RAM worked fine until one of these corsair modules failed: after several crashes I identified the culprit module by elimination using memtest.
A good time to upgrade: I left the upper slots as is and filled the two lower slots 4 GB modules, also from corsair so that I now have 12 GB. When booting up the machine, the system profiler indicated that the machine only recognised 6 GB, one of each size module. When removing the two 4 GB modules, the imac recognised the remaining two 2 GB module. Turns out that one of the 4 GB modules is doa. It was identified again by elimination: Using only one of the 4Gb modules in the mac in the same upper left slot, the imac booted up with the good one, but not with the faulty one.
Question: why did the imac not recognise one working memory module in the upper slot when one in the lower slot was faulty, but recognised it again, once the faulty one was removed.
Apple says the i5 quad-core imac does not start up if only one of the lower slots is occupied - which is not true. Apple also says that the imac does not work properly when the memory access door is not re-installed, which is also not true.
Does it matter whether I install two 2 GB modules in the upper slots and two 4 GB modules in the lower, or would it be better the other way round. What if I installed the 4 GB modules above each other the the same with the 2 Gb modules?
    Any experience would be appreciated.

Apple says the i5 quad-core imac does not start up if only one of the lower slots is occupied - which is not true.
If you look at the Apple instructions online (I believe the exact article you mentioned), I understood that Apple and I had a different idea of what top and bottom were supposed to be. Both you and I feel that the original RAM are in the top slots, but the instructions are such that it sounds as though they are in the bottom.
In any case, I've read of another case where someone moved the original RAM to the bottom and installed the added RAM in the top slots - supposedly it will result in slightly faster performance because those are the RAM that will be addressed first. However, the RAM needs to be in pairs horizontally: 2 x 4 GB in the top (or bottom) slots and 2 x 2 GB horizontally in the other banks. I do not have any idea as to why a top slot would not work if the bottom was not occupied.

  • 2009 Mac Pro 2.66 Xeon Quad Core or 2013 Mac Mini 2.66 Quad Core i7 ?

2009 Mac Pro 2.66 Xeon Quad Core or 2013 Mac Mini Server 2.66 Quad Core i7 ? I have a choice between these two for running Final Cut Pro X. Price is nearly the same.
The Mac Pro has a ePCI 512 display adapter, 16 GB RAM, more hard drive expansion and faster 1tb 7200 rpm conventional hard drive. FW 800.
The Mini Server has two 1 tb 5400 rpm conventional drives, 16 GB RAM and an integrated display adapter. Has thunderbolt and FW 800.
My primary concern is the performance of the processors. Does anyone happen to know how they compare in video editing?

This may give you some ideas.
There are some folks on this forum who report very saticfactory results editing on Minis.
Perhaps they will chime in with first hand experience (which I can't give).

  • ATI Radeon HD 4870 1GB for Mac Pro 2.66 Quad Core Xenon

I have the option of picking up an ATI Radeon HD 4870 1 GB graphics card to go with my soon-to-be-new MAc Pro 2.66 Quad core. I see know that Apple can upgrade to ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB, but that card is not available to me at the moment. Will the 1GB do the job without overheating the system? Am new to the Mac Pros. Need it for the Windows gaming portion of the system. Am using the rest for graphics and photography.

If the MAc Pro 2.66 comes with Snow Leopard, why would I have to upgrade my OS?
OK. So, if got the MAc version, it would work A-OK without overheating?
    Thanks for your input!

  • Mac pro 2.66 Quad Core - boot drive mirrored, replace?

    All,
I have a Mac Pro 2.66 Quad Core system.
I got all 'sexy' when I set it up - loaded four 1-TB drives in the 4 bays, Mirrored the boot set, also mirrored the secondary set for data.
I am getting ready to have these guys filled up (I do lots of video, pics, etc), and am thinking about 'growing' the drives to 2TB or even 3TB disks (mirrored of course, I'm paranoid).
So I am thinking about the 'how' of moving my data to the larger drive, getting things set up.  I have not had any of the drives fail, so I haven't needed to do a swap out yet.
Can I simply take out one of the mirrored boot drives, put in a larger drive, and it will then rebuild the mirror?
or if anyone has some info they can point me to, I'd appreciate it.
    thx

You cannot just add a larger drive and grow your RAID Volume size. You need to create an empty larger RAID Volume and COPY the data to the larger Volume, e.g., from your Backups.
Mirrored RAID is NOT Backup. It merely extends the time to repair to keep a drive failure from becoming a data disaster. RAID gives you no protection from human error, crazy software or file problems that happen "just because". You still need backup.
One of the best ways to get increased performance from a computer with the ability to support multiple Internal drives is to keep only System, Library, Applications, and the hidden unix files including paging/swap on the Boot Drive, and move everything else off. This dramatically reduces competition for the Boot Drive and everything speeds up. A Velociraptor is a little faster, and an SSD is incrementally faster still.
If that is all that is on the Boot Drive, you do not need to RAID it, since it can be reproduced from DVDs or downloads in short order. All your User files and Preferences are on other drives..
Implementing this would suggest a single small fast Boot Drive, typically with an offline clone as Backup for emergencies, and forget about RAID-ing the Boot Drive.

  • Mac Pro 2.66 Quad-Core 1GBRAM, how much more RAM and HOW?

I just got my Mac Pro 2.66 Quad-Core, and I had a budget so I left the RAM down @ only 1GB because I knew I could upgrade it later. Well later is here & I want to put more in it, but I hear it is a little more complicated than the sensless shoving of big ram chips into empty slots...
I am a heavy user of Logic 7, soon to be of Logic Studio, and hopefully I will be using AutoCAD at home soon (for school). How much RAM would be optimal for me to eventually have? Right now I think I can afford to purchase 2GB more, but I dont know how exactly to put it into my machine. Right now it has a 512MB per xeon.
    Can anyone help me out?

    I just pulled out 1GB (2 x 512MB) simms in replaced them with 4GB (2 x 2GB) simms.
I had added more memory as 2 GB (1x2GB) and ran out of space. Now I have a total of 11GB RAM:
    1GB = 2 x 512MB
    2GB = 2 x 1GB
    8GB = 4 x 2GB
Leaving me with 2x512MB simms sitting in the box on the self. Sure wish I knew someone local I could give these things to for a reasonable price. Anyway, I wouldn't go any higher than 2GB simms (4GB) as that seems to currently have the best price/space ratio. Crucial is good enough and order it from NewEgg.com or MacConnection.com and you'll get a good price (I got mine at MacConnection.com).

  • Is the mac mini server the same hardware as the other mac minis (except for the quad core i7 and dual hard drives) with different software or is it configured differently?

I have a mac mini with an i7 dual core processor. It is perceptably slower than my macbook pro with a quad core i7. Does the mac mini server have the same hardware configuation as the regular mac mini with server software or is the hardware different (aside from the i7 quad core and dual hard drives)? I want a mini with a quad core i7...

Your assumption is correct.  The server does however only
have the Intel HD3000 graphics like the base model with
no option, at this time, for the discrete graphics chip.  So,
depending on what you are using it for, that could be a deal
breaker.  Remember that your MBP does have a discrete
    graphics chip.
I have a 2011 Mini Server connected to a Thunderbolt display
that gets used as an engineering workstation and general
personal use (some photo editing, LP restoraton, general
internet browsing).  You simply just not enable any of the
server services.  I find the combination to work quite well
for my purposes.  I also have a 13" 2.7 GHz i7 Macbook Pro
which is pretty much strictly for work.  As far as CPU
power it is pretty much equivelent to your Mini.  For the most
part I find the Mini does outperfom my MBP.  I heavily use
Parallels and Windows7 virtual machines, so the more cores
    the better.
So, If you do a lot of CPU intensive stuff that is multithreaded,
the Server may help.  If it is graphics intensive and your software
heavily leaverages the GPU, you may actually take a hit on
    performance.

    Hi z,
Contact Apple and ask them for the install disc that would have shipped with your machine if Lion had not been released. Others have been successful in obtaining the disc and installing SL.

  • Video card to run 30 inch display for G5 2.5 GHz quad core

I want to purchase the 30 inch HD display for my G5 Quad core 2.5 GHZ machine. Apple states that it needs the nVidia GeForce 6800 card to run. I have the GeForce 6600. Will the 30 inch display run at a lower resolution with this card? If not, could someone recommend a PCI-E card that will? I did find a 6800 GeForce Ultra at Macsales.com but they state it will not run on the quad G5.
Thank you for your time and consideration

Your existing card has two DVI ports. One is single-link and can only run up to a 23". The other is dual-link, and can run a 30" at full resolution.

That's a kernel panic and indicates some sort of problem either with the computer's hardware or software. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on diagnosing kernel panics. It would help to post the panic log: Mac OS X- How to log a kernel panic.
Meanwhile, try booting the computers into Safe Mode then restarting normally. If this is simply a disk repair or cache file problem then this may fix it.
You can also try creating a new admin account on each computer then booting into the new account. This would help determine if the problem is related to a bad file in the user accounts.

I have a Mac Pro Intel Xeon 3.2 Ghz Quad core (mid 2012) using OSX 10.7.5) and cannot get iDVD to run. I tried 7.0.4 and 7.1.2, both from Apple software update and both crash during "loading themes". I am reluctant to upgrade OSX from 10.7.5 because I do not want to loose Final Cut Express 4.0.1. Apple Care no longer supports iDVD. I want a version if iDVD that supports Chapter markers as in iDVD 7.?.? that i used with my old (now deceased) Apple Power PC Mac Pro.

iDVD 7 should work fine with 10.7.5.  Try this basic troubleshooting fix:
1 - delete the IDVD preference file, com.apple.iDVD.plist, that resides in your

2 - delete IDVD'S cache file, Cache.db, that is located in your
