Quad Cpu

Am I to understand that the P6N Sli Platinum will only Support the Quad core Q6700 GO , Q6600 GO and the Q6600 B3 which all three are 1066 Mhz . But the Specs for that board show that it supports 1333 mhz Cpu's  which is correct ?

Quote from: Ralphdb on 21-December-08, 22:55:03
that's what I thought. I couldn't beleive that the Quad EXtreme would work.. QX6850 must be the reason they show 1333 on the support page. I guess I could stick with the DUO's and use the E8500 and get my 1333 mhz that way...
I want to start Folding again but only in the background.. while gaming (mildly) or surfing the web.
Even with your current setup, you can still do folding and gaming without any issues.

  • Power mac g5 quad cpu runing hot

ok my power mac g5 quad the  top cpu core 1 and 2 are runing really hot and ween itryed to turn it on this moring the fans all went to max and shut off i then tryed to trun it on again and it just went 'click' and i unpluged ever thing left it alon and came back about a hour later and tuned it on and ween it got to the main desk top the fans were on max and the top cpu cores were about 155f 165f and the outher cpu was runing fine what could this be a computer guy told me this could be that i need new thermal paste pleassss help

The thermal paste degrades after 3-5 years of use.
Whether anyone wants to or not, the thermal paste in ALL G5 machines needs replaced.
LCS systems, even without leaks, can have reduced performance due to sludge buildup or loss of volume due to evaporation and escape of those liquid vapors.
Serious consideration should be made towards rebuilding the LCS for longevity of the computer.

  • Check G5 Quad cpu temp without booting OS X?

Does anyone know how to do this? Like an Open firmware command? I suspect it was overheating according to the person that had it last. What would it do if it overheated? It would shut off, right? Do you think I could get a temp reading out of a Ubuntu live cd or some utility?
    Thanks guys.

I felt the radiator and it was super hot (like so hot it hurt to touch), so I knew that the cooling system was circulating the heat like it should. I also noticed that the CPU fans were running extremely slow, maybe 10 rotations per second? Very, very slow. After about 3 minutes the overtemp light on the motherboard came on, and I turned it off.
So I did one better. I grabbed a 1 x 1 foot fan (like a personal fan) and set it inside of the G5 case after removing the stock fans. I set it to high and have been running it for a few hours without the overtemp light on. The radiator is barely warm, maybe ~70 degrees F. I installed Ubuntu 12 on a spare HDD and ran the temp command, coming up with most cores at 34-65 degrees. I assume that is Celcius. It is usually reading about 42 to 44. What is weird is that the temp will fluctuate 20 degrees in five seconds.
Is it running hot or is that a good temp for my computer?

New at this. First build. So please treat me gently.
The CPU fan's power selector is clearly marked on the X48C (3 pins). The CPU fan's power lead is obvious (4 pins).
What would you gurus recommend I do?

You are so right. I was trying to plug it into the sys fan. Newbie error. Many thanks for the gentle nudge in the right direction.

  • HP 8540s i7 quad CPU change out

    Hello again friends!
This time I have an extreamly "interesting" question:  I have an HP Eleitebook 8540s, w/ an  i7 quad, 1st gen chip. The motherboard is an HP1521. I have an Intel processor from a Lenovo, G500s Touch. It is a core i3, 3rd gen. chip.
My HP i7 quad  has a socket # 989rPGA. The Lenovo, has a socket # FCP GA 988. Although these 2 are not the same exact match, will they be interchangeable? Perhaps I should be asking this question to the Intel community forum? I am not a member there, and was hoping to get some input from the HP "experts"! Thanks!

No a 3rd gen i7 will not fit in a socket made for a 1st gen. 988 pins will not fit in a 989 pin socket.

  • 790gx-g65 with phenom quad cpu vin core voltage ?

Hi people I wonder some experts may be able to help me here ?
For weeks and weeks I have been struggling to get my PC to run correctly or boot into windows, I have a 3 boot system Vista,Seven and XP, and had always been using the windows 7 O/S until about three weeks ago when it failed to boot, I managed to get into vista, and XP so assumed something had become corrupt, but noticed XP verry sluggish to respond, and the mouse curser barely reacts, now vista also wont boot, and only accasionally will xp, I have run virus scans, and mailware scans, tune up programs on all drives, disconnected all but boot drive, and taken ram out one by one, but nothing seems to sort out the problem, today I noticed an amd overdrive tool that gives some system stats, and noticed that all my cpu cores run at arround 1 to 1.9 volts, but vin2 is at 154.88 volts, surely not ?, all tempretures appear ok, I'm hoping its a glitch of some type, but if not, how do I change it, or any ideas as to cause and what I may do to get my system back ?

  • Microsoft Office 2004 -- extremely high cpu usage and virtual ram

    hi,

    does anyone have same experiences?
    thanks for your help!

I am able to work OK with office, I'm using the 'old version' Microsoft Office v.X, not much details in the About Box, just listed as MSoft Word/Excel/etc for Mac service release 1.
I get the occasional crash, and I have seen Word in particular use 90% of a single core and amazingly large virtual memory usage, gigabytes sometimes, but eventually the document gets printed.
It shows how useful the dual core (or quad) cpu approach is!
One cpu for Word to print, and one cpu to run the rest of my applications/life!
I still use this old office rather than re-booting into Window§ for whatever is the latest version of office.
Doing some playing with a similar one page document in Office v.X and Pages 2.01, I get Word using about 25% of a core , Pages using 5%, - whilst editing; Intel native Pages has 20% of a core and 80MB ram 480 virtual whilst printing, Word has about 100% of a core and 65MB ram 650 virtual whilst printing, but it is a powerPC code so Rosetta is in there somewhere.

  • Core 2 Quad & late MacBook Pro

Hi all! Really glad to be here as an all new Mac user - got my MacBook Pro just four days ago and already I start wondering where to go from here.
See, its probably 2-4 months from here until Apple is going to introduce a quad core MacBook Pro. It also makes sense to sync this event with the introduction of Snow Leopard, whenever that will be.
So I was wondering: Would it be possible for the current line of MacBook Pro's (such as mine) to be upgraded with a Core 2 Quad CPU in, say, late 2009 / early 2010 (when prices are more reasonable)?
What do you guys think? I know, Apple is pretty restrictive about upgrading MacBook hardware.
What's more, I don't know much about the guts of the MBP, especially w/ regard to the CPU - logic board - business. Maybe if I did, I wouldn't ask this question.
So, is it technically possible? Will it be officially supported? Tell me your opinion.

Speculation on this board is a no-no so there's no point in debating when/whether apple will do a quad core laptop
Your second question is an easy one, there's no way now or in the future to upgrade a laptops cpu. What you buy is what you get, and there's not much else you can do other then upgrade the ram and HD.

  • Oracle 10g CPU Licensing / Usage

I have purchased a quad cpu license for 10g. The new server just purchased has has 8 CPU's. Can oracle be installed on this machine without having to increase the CPU license count? Can 10g be tuned to just use 4 of the 8 CPU's to meet the licensing requirement?

The new server just purchased has has 8 CPU'what sort of server is it? Are those CPUs single, dual or multi-core? There are different licensing multipliers for certain types of CPU. Find out more.
Can 10g be tuned to just use 4 of the 8 CPU's to meet the licensing requirement? No. This is an artifact of different chip architectures. It is possible to do this with Intel chips (I recently blogged about this whilst pondering why Oracle Express is available for Linux but not Mac or other Unixes) but Sun Sparc chips are harder.
What you might be able to do (depending on your server) is hard-partione your server and install Oracle in a 4-processor partition. Supposedly Oracle will except Sun Solaris 10 Containers as a licensable partition but I would check with your account manager.
    Cheers, APC

  • Computer won't run more than 3-4 seconds after turning on then shuts down. New CPU installed

I replaced a damaged AMD Phenom II 820 quad CPU with what HP said was a compatible AMD Phenom II 965 quad Black edition on my HP Pavilion p6320y. AMD recommended that I also replace the existing 300w PSU with a 500w PSU. That was done succesfully as well. When I turn the machine on, the cooling fans come on but run for no more than 3-4 seconds and the machine turns itself off. The CPU is brand new and has been determined to be fine, not to have been a DOA. Does anyone have suggestions?
    This question was solved.

I'd recommend checking with HP again as I don't believe the 'Black Edition' is supported on this machine.

  • Considering iMac, questions about current CPU comparison

Considering purchasing the lowest end iMac and curious how much of a difference in hardware I'll be getting. Any input on the below would be greatly appreciated.
    Current:
    Dell XPS 410, Windows 7 64 bit
Intel Core 2 Quad CPU @ 2.4 GHz
    4GB RAM/ 300 GB Memory
    Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT
How would the Intel Core i3 @3.06 Ghz compare?
I'd be getting the same RAM, more memory.
What about my graphic card above compared to the ATI Radeon HD 4600? ATI's website states 320 Steam Processing Units while my Nvidia claims 32. Same thing?
    Thanks!

It's difficult to compare the two because you don't mention how you will using the machine. You're comparing apples and oranges, if you were specific about the applications you use or the type of applications then we would have a better starting point. But comparing strictly hardware is not a fair comparison. For example if you are only a gamer stay with a PC and upgrade to an i7 machine. If you are an occasional gamer but primarily focus on music, photography, MS Office applications or surfing the web, there is not doubt you will be thrilled with a iMac.
If you have an Apple Store close enough to drive to then go and sit down on the i3 and make the decision yourself.
An finally and probably most importantly is the OS, one HUGE benefit an iMac has is it can run OS X and MS Windows where a Windows machine cannot run OS X.

  • Captivate 5 on a Quad system - fixed?

    I had the following:
Dell XPS 430, Intel Core 2 Quad CPU, Q8300 @2.50 GHz
When I first got Capivate 5 and loaded it on this system it wouldn't work so I loaded onto my dual core laptop (no problems on my laptop). I was wondering if they have fixed the problem with Quad Cores?
I need to do some training modules on Acrobat 9 that is on my quad system. My laptop has Acobat.
    thx

Let me clear one big misconception from your mind: XP64 is not faster than its 32bit pendant - it's just different. The main difference is, that each process is launched isolated from each other, so there is no concurrent multitasking and RAM usage - if the system provides enbough physical RAM. This greatly improves overall stability and allows you to launch more applications without them interfering with each other. The real difference is that you can use the full 4GB for a 32bit app to begin with, which is not possible at all on 32bit systems as they will always be truncated to 2/2.5/3GB.
More RAM by itself will not have any impact on the host system's speed, either. In theory (if your motherboard would support that many RAM banks) you could throw 128 GB at XP64, but it wouldn't turn a toaster into a rocket. ;-) There are some 64bit native apps that feel smoother on such systems, but this mostly hinges on the programs having to shuffle less data back and forth. On 32bit systems a lot of time is spent doing just that - swapping memory pages or parking them in the swap file on your hard drive. On a 64 bit system you don't need that as much, you can simply request more RAM.
Pertaining to your programs: Yes, they will run just fine on XP64. I used 6.5 on XP64 until recently myself and the older Photoshop versions never much cared, either. Premiere might be a bit picky, but with a little fiddling should be get to run.
