Quad G5 corrupts FW400 (Oxford 911) drive during "Erase" reformat

Using a Stardom U6-1-WA FW400/USB2.0 case connected to the read FW400 port of the Quad, Disk Utility froze during a reformat using the "Erase" function. This left the drive so neither Disk Utility Repair or Allsoft Disk Warrier (latest download) can fix the directory. Disk Utility reports something like "unexpected B-tree size".
I remember some G4's had similar problems with the Oxford chips, but this case worked fine on my G4 dual 1.4 GHz for may formats with no problems.
Anyone tried this case with the Quad yet, or heard anything? Apple support knows nothing about this at this time. Drive case site is www.stardom.com.tw
And, anyone no a program for OS-X that can low-level format or repair drives? (This on is a Maxtor Mixline II 250 GB)

Before writing off the drive I'd try it is a new case perhaps from a more well known vendor. Preferably one with firewire vs. USB which I think is more problematic than FW by far for mass storage. Try OWC or soemone like that - they are not all that much dough.

  • Is the Oxford 911 chipset important for Ext. HD?

    Hi,
I'm having trouble here in Canada locating an inexpensive ($60) external hard drive enclosure that has the much recommended Oxford 911 chipset for Firewire connection.
Is that chipset necessary in order to simply work properly with the iMac G5, or is it only necessary if you want to boot from the external drive?
I am going to use the drive just for video and audio editing. Would the drive need the Oxford 911 chipset for these functions to perform properly?
(I already have an external drive with that chipset for back-up and bootibility.)
    Thanks for any help.
    Doc

The Oxford 911 is a good work horse chipset for Firewire 400, and it is one I use and recommend for Firewire 400 enclosures. However it is not the only chipset available, there are even other Oxford models that would work fine for you.
The Oxford 924 supports both Firewire 400 and USB, and is commonly found in many external cases that have both Firewire 400 and USB interfaces. The Oxford 912 is a Firewire 800/USB 2 interface chipset and is also commonly in use.
My own preferences is for the 911 and 912 chipsets.
Here in the States, inexpensive external enclosures are readily available with these chipsets. So I guess you will need to do more research to find a source in Canada.

  • Oxford 911 chipset

I had always heard that to be able to boot from an external hard drive that it had to have an Oxford 911 chipset.  Does this hold true of external DVD drives? If I want an external DVD drive to boot from what do I need to look out for?

    Hi Igor.
A follow-up on the Sony drive: This morning I connected it to the i7 iMac to see the System Profiler info on it. It's on a USB port at the moment. Here are some pertinent screen shots from Profiler:
    First, from the "USB section:
Note the line, "Location ID:          0xfd140000 / 5" --sound like that could indicate an Oxford 914 chipset. NOt sure.
This is the entry for the drive under "Disc Burning":
and, for comparision, the built-in drive:
Looks like the Sony can burn without extra drivers.

  • How do i repair or recover data from a corrupt USB external hard drive that does not show up on my Mac desktop or disk utility

How do i repair or recover data from a corrupt USB external hard drive that does not show up on my Mac desktop or disk utility?
Last night i was using my external hard drive, for some reason the folder just closed and i couldn't find it on my desktop.
After googling solutions, i found it in the disk utilities, i clicked on the 'repair' button many times, but it said the 'error...' message.
So i ejected it to try again, now when i connect the USB external hard drive it doesn't show up on my desktop or disk utilities.
I really just want to either repair or recover the data on it because it literally has everything (documents, work files, photos etc) on it,
I downloaded an application to recover my files but it needs the USB to at least show up.recognise it which mine doesn't.
I know i should've backed it up on another USB, this definitely teaches me for next time to back up all my files.
Are the files lost forever or can i recover them by going to a shop or using a software?

    Thank you for responding.
This might sound stupid since i'm not really knowledgeable with Macs,
but since all my files were moved from my mac computer to the external hard drive,
is it possible to recover those files through my Mac - like recovering deleted files?

  • Copied files got corrupted in USB3 external drives connected to Macbook Pro, how to fix it?

I use USB3 connected external hard drives in my Macbook Pro (Yosemite 10.10.1) frequently. I had no problem until two months ago. This week I noticed a lot of corrupted files in one drive. Luckily  I have a backup, and I copied the files. But the files copied recently were mostly corrupted even though source files are fine. I spent a whole day trying with different options, e.g. erasing the drive, using cp, rsync, ditto etc. I figured out that if I copy single file or folder using cp, the copied files are fine, but rsync, ditto or recursive cp or finder's drag and drop results into a lot of corrupted files. I thought this was the hardware related issue of the external drive. But, I was surprised to notice that all files copied without any problem when I used a old macbook (only has USB2 port, and still use Mavericks). Since I have almost 2TB data to write, USB2 is very slow. I am very disappointed to find out that USB3 in Yosemite has caused all these troubles. If anyone has a solution to this problem, Please suggest.
External hard drive Western Digital My passport.
Disk is formatted to Paragon NTFS

It's good to hear the Macbook Pro & the disk is capable of working correctly. The next test would be to try a clean install of OS X & repeat the copy guess. Adding third party drivers for write support makes the picture a little cloudy IMO.
I'm not really sure what else to suggest other than doing some tests & then taking that data to an Apple store. If you are lucky the genius may follow up on it, or if you submit it as bug reports Apple may follow up on it.

  • "Corrupt content from reliable source" during download

    All,
When attempting to download and install Flash 10.3, I'm greeted with the error message "Corrupt content from reliable source" during the initial download.  The installer never gets to the "installing" phase, as it appears to hang while downloading the actual install file.  I've tried clearing all content (history, cookies, temporary internet files, etc) with no luck.
This is on Internet Explorer 9 running Windows 7 SP1.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

There is a new version of Flash (10.3.181.4) that was released today, but according to the archives it has a date stamp of 8/9/2009 and is unavaiable. I'm sure we'll have to wait for them to correct the date error in this download before it becomes available.
Until then, as a workaround, you can visit the archive pages at http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html and download the 10.3.181.34 version.

  • Possible? FW400,160GB Hard drive. Bus powered?

I need an INEXPENSIVE external bus-powered (FW400) mobile hard drive, 160GB. I want to be able to edit video & have it bootable.
Any thoughts? I narrowed it down to 3 drives:
    1) OWC Mercury On-The-Go 160GB FW400. $139
    2) Lacie Rugged All terrain 160GB
    3) Smartdisk Firelite 160GB
    PowerBook G4, IMac G4 512Ram Mac OS X (10.4.6) 1.5 gHz, 512 Ram, LaCie 250gb, Casio EXZ850
    PowerBook G4, IMac G4 512Ram   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   1.5 gHz, 512 Ram, LaCie 250gb, Casio EXZ850

Tell me about it! Aren't they great?
That's what keeps me from getting one too. The price. I mean, you can even build your own for less.
Go to places like Newegg.com or DealMac.com (where they list daily, all the lowest prices for different Mac-related things) and you can get a good hard drive then buy your own enclosure.
Won't look like the G-Raid mini, but does the job.
Again, I recommend SmartDisk, but your decision is the final one. =)

I seem to keep doing this on most of posts... (forgetting the last thought).
Did you try the Western Digital brand ones? They're not bad either. I just don't like the way they look. That odd off-angle enclosure like they were made wrong. They're popular too.

By the way, Seagate has them as well. Though their designs are even worse! Plus Maxtor.

  • Mounted drive during backup

    Hi Everyone,
This is sort of a combination question...
    1. I did my initial backup overnight for 111GB. This morning, it was at 102GB and then seemed to complete at 104GB instead of going all the way to 111GB. Is this normal?
    2. The mounted drive during backup that says "Backup of Courtney's iMac" (in my case) did not un-mount after the backup completed. Isn't it supposed to?
Thanks for your help, whoever you may be!

  • Is there anyway to reset the GPIB driver during program execution?

Is there anyway to reset the GPIB driver during program execution?

The issue at hand is that a thread is executing a series of tests which may or may not be making GPIB calls at any given time. The thread may be killed at any time with the function CmtTerminateThreadPoolThread (due to the user pressing the stop button on the GUI). Cooperative thread termination is not an option since a test may cause the thread of execution to lock up the system. The problem is that there may be outstanding GPIB calls at the time that the thread is stopped. These calls time out and generate run-time errors usually via the GPIB function ibrd. The motivation is to completely stop the GPIB driver while the thread is being killed, after which it can be re-initialized. Ideally.

Hi, my Ipod Schuffle (4 gen) dissapears from windows vista right after I execute Itunes, I've change the drive letter, erase temps in App data file, verified USB drivers, etc... Can someone guide on how to solve this?

If you want the shuffle to be always visible in Windows (outside of iTunes), you need to Enable disk use.
Select the shuffle in the iTunes sidebar, under DEVICES.  Over to the right, select the Summary tab.  You should see a checkbox that says Enable disk use.  Check it and click Apply.
NOTE:  If disk use is enabled, you have to Eject the shuffle in iTunes, BEFORE you physically disconnect it.  If disk use is NOT enabled, you can disconnect the shuffle at any time, as long as iTunes is not doing something with it at that moment (such as syncing); the shuffle's light will then be blinking (to indicate DO NOT DISCONNECT).
So, unless you want to use the shuffle like a USB flash drive (carry random files on it), you may want to NOT Enable disk use.

  • HT201250 Is there a possibility to recover erased files from an external hard drive that was reformatted by the Time Machine?

Is there a possibility to recover erased files from an external hard drive that was reformatted by the Time Machine?

    Basics of File Recovery
    Files in Trash
If you simply put files in the Trash you can restore them by opening the Trash (left-click on the Trash icon) and drag the files from the Trash to your Desktop or other desired location.  OS X also provides a short-cut to undo the last item moved to the Trash -press COMMAND-Z.
If you empty the Trash the files are gone. If a program does an immediate delete rather than moving files to the Trash, then the files are gone.  Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When files are deleted only the directory entries, not the files themselves, is modified. The space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage, but the files are still on the drive. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

Your profile says you have 10.6, so why bother with the original 10.5 OS?
But to your question, before you erase anything, make a backup of your data for safe keeping and restoration. Having an external hard drive for this purpose is most useful.
