Quad G5 + Final Cut Studio 5.1, dead end upgrade path?

I bought a quad G5 with Final Cut Studio 5.1 HD back in May '06. The FCS 5.1 is untouched..BNIB, since iMovie does everything I need (for now).
========
Customers who already own a copy of the the current Final Cut Studio can update to the universal version of the suite through a $49 "Final Cut Studio 1.1 Crossgrade Fulfillment" upgrade. Information on how to obtain this and the aforementioned upgrades should begin appearing on Apple's Web site in early February.

Contacts close to Apple have suggested that fulfillment upgrades may only be available through snail mail, requiring the customer to supply all install discs from the software which they are upgrading.
========
Is this offer still valid?
Or, maybe the above is a waste of time/money. I've been told that the Intel based desktop blow away the quad G5. So, just sell the quad G5 & FCS 5.1HD (together or separately). Go with the future Intel based desktops & Final Cut Studio 2 (FCP 6)
Final Cut Studio 2 will supposedly work on a G5. But, won't that eventually "go away"? Meaning that, it's best to go with the Intel based Macs (& corresponding software).

The 5.1 upgrade path has been long gone for over a year and a half. FCS 2 was released April 2007, and since a month before that the 5.1 offer was off the table.
Your only option is to upgrade to FCS 2...but that is a good thing.
But...you said you already HAVE FCP 5.1...that is the Universal Crossgrade. The $49 upgrade was for people who had 5.0.

  • Installing Final Cut Studio over old Production Suite upgrade

My company recently purchased 3 sets of Final Cut Studio. Two of the edit bays just got new first time installs so they worked great but the third bay has my personal verion of production suite wich has been crossgraded to Final Cut Studio. I would like to take mine off and install the company's new Final Cut Studio version. How do I uninstall and change to the new serial numbers? I have read several posts on uninstalling FCP but nothing on DVD Studio, Motion, etc.
    Thanks

If it was me, and will be soon, I'd gather up all my install discs, serial numbers from other apps etc and rebuild the system from the ground up. It'll take the better part of a day, but you'll be glad you did.

  • Final Cut Studio Crossgrade - Best method for upgrade?

    Hi,
I've received my new Final Cut Studio crossgrade disks after surrendering my old ones to Apple and paying my £40 plus p&p (seems a bit antiquated doesn't it) and now I'm wondering how to go about installing.
I suppose ideally I would start again with a fresh OSX install and then install all the new Final Cut Studio apps on a 'clean' system. However, if I decide I am too lazy to do this (as fun as it sounds, my system is running fine otherwise so it would be a bit of a pain) is there a way of clearing off my old FCS apps cleanly, to allow me to install the new ones without any performance compromises / potential conflicts / unused files lying about on my system disk (or is this going to leave loads of hidden files that might cause crashes etc.?
I would appreciate advice from anyone who has tried their method and is certain it definitely works!
    Cheers
    Alan Smithee

You're right - a clean install would be better. BUT, few of us can afford the time or energy to rebuild all the apps folder, etc. Personally, I simply installed it directly on top of all existing apps, after making a system drive clone. Worked perfectly, I saw no problems after crossgrading.

  • FINAL CUT STUDIO WANTS TO PERFORM AN UPGRADE?

Due to an array of problems with OSX (10.4.11), and syndication errors (306) - I've purchased a new hard drive and performed a fresh install using my Install Disk. I then proceeded to download and install all software updates. So far so good... No crashdump errors in the console log. Then... When I went to install Final Cut Studio 2 (the suspected culprit) - the Installer Menu wants to perform an Upgrade... The only problem... There isn't any software to Upgrade... This is a brand new hard drive with a totally clean OS. However... FCS2 is, in fact, installed and malfunctioning (Qmaster) on my other hard drive - leaving crashdump errors in the console log. Can anyone please explain why/how FCS2 would perform an upgrade, and not an Install?
This has been driving me crazy since I bought this computer in October 07
    Please Help!

Apple's Installer looks in the /Library/Receipts folder to see if you have previous versions of an application installed. Normally, you would only see the "Upgrade" option if this were the case.
You might try temporarily disconnecting the other drive to see if Installer offers to do the job properly.
It is probably seeing the receipt for FCP there.

  • Final cut studio 2 HD retail vs upgrade

I purchased final cut studio 2 HD at an auction in a large lot of misc software and I was wondering if theres a way to tell the difference between the full retail version and the upgrade version without opening the box? Thanks.

An upgrade version would normally say so on the outside of the box.
On the bottom of the box there should be a sticker with an MA number.
The full version would be   MA886Z/A
An upgrade version could be  MA887Z/A  or MA888Z/A.
    Hope this helps.

  • Upgrading från Final Cut Studio 5.1 retail - which upgrade should I buy?

Some year ago I opted for the fulfil upgrade to the cross-platform version.
Now I have the package Final Cut Studio 5.1 retail, with serial numbers. It has DVDSP4, FCP, Motion, LiveType, SoundTrack Pro, etc.
There are two different upgrade packages to Final Cut Studio 2.
One costs 499, the other 699. Which one should I buy?

Yeah, I thought so too. But better safe than sorry and ask here first.
    Thank you!

  • Final Cut Pro 5.1 to Final Cut Studio 2

I have a retail version of Final Cut Pro 5.1 and have the upgrade to Final Cut Studio 2. When I upgrade to Final Cut Studio 2 I input the serial which tells me I have input an upgrade serial and to put in my original serial number. I input the original serial and it tells me its not valid. I have a MacBook 17" Intel that this worked no problem on. This machine is in for repairs so I am trying to install this in a new Macbook 13" intel. I did encounter this problem on an older G5 when I first bought the upgrade and I know there was something that needed to be done (Deleting ID files etc...) to make this work. I just cant remember what that was. Any help would be great.

Did you buy the correct upgrade package?
Because there was one upgrade from any version of FCP, and one upgrade from a previous version of FC Studio
One won't work with the other.

  • Final Cut Studio 5 on Intel

I have Final Cut Studio 5 and I need to put it on an Intel based Mac. I seem to remember that you need to send in the disks and pay a fee to upgrade to the Intel version (FCS5.1 I believe?), but I can't find anything online about doing that. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
    Thanks!

Here is what I found on the web for you:
Final Cut Studio Universal apps won't be sold separately
    By Prince McLean
    Published: 02:40 PM EST
Apple will no longer offer its Final Cut Pro, Soundtrack Pro, Motion, and DVD Studio Pro audio and video applications as standalone products, and come March will choose instead to sell them exclusively as part of the $1299 Final Cut Studio production suite.
The company began informing its resellers of the change this week and also said it has stopped accepting new orders for the current versions of Final Cut Pro, Soundtrack Pro, Motion, and DVD Studio Pro. "The individual applications in Final Cut Studio will only be available as part of the suite," the company wrote in a memo.
In February, Apple will begin taking orders for a universal version of Final Cut Studio called "Final Cut Studio Universal," which will ship in March for $1299. The company also appears that it will continue to market a PowerPC-only version of the suite under the name "Final Cut Studio 1.1."
The move to an all-or-nothing bundle will mean that new customers will have to fork over a pretty penny for the complete audio and video production suite. However, owners of the current versions of either DVD Studio Pro, Motion, and Soundtrack Pro will be eligible to upgrade to the entire $1299 Final Cut Studio for just $199. Final Cut Pro 5.0 owners will be able to take Apple up on the same "fulfillment" upgrade offer for just $99.
Apple will also offer $49 crossgrade upgrades for its other Pro applications, Aperture and Logic Pro 7.1. For users of Logic Express 7.1, the upgrade will cost only $29.
There is so far no word on plans for Shake, Apple's $2999 advanced digital compositing software.

  • Is Final Cut Pro HD Production Suite the same as Final Cut Studio?

I need to get Final Cut Studio 5.1 Universal (for use on my new Intel based Macbook Pro). I currently have Final Cut Pro HD Productions Studio. Is that the same as Final Cut Studio? The cost of upgrading when you currently have studio is $49 as opposed to $199 for upgrading to studio from standalone Final Cut Pro HD. I don't want to have to spend an unecessary $75. It does appear that what I have is the equivalent of Studio, though it doesn't say so on the box.
Thanks in advance for an answer. I've never used the forum before. If it would be useful to answer offline, my email is [email protected]
    Thanks! Inga

    Welcome to the forum!
Going from my memory (or lack, thereof), the "Production Suite" included FCP 4, DVD-SP 3, Motion (version 1) and the normally bundled apps; Compressor, SoundTrack, LiveType and Cinema Tools. During the time that the "Production Suite" was available, the main pro apps could also be purchased as individual titles.
Final Cut Studio includes FCP 5, DVD-SP 4, Motion 2 and the bundled titles; Compressor 2, SoundTrack Pro, LiveType and Cinema Tools. With the introduction of the "Studio" package, Apple discontinued the availability of the individual titles - the package became the ONLY way to get them.
So while they aren't the same, it's essentially the same concept of marketing all the pro-apps in one package. If you have a license for the Production Studio, the cost to crossgrade should be $199.00 (according to: http://www.apple.com/universal/crossgrade/ ).

  • Final Cut Studio 2 upgrade ruined my HD video files!

Okay, now I'm really puzzled. I installed Final Cut Studio 2 to upgrade my PowerMac G5. Now, all the HD footage I recorded, both in iMovie HD and in FCP 5 from my Sony HDR-FX1 camera has annoying green and red streaks that flash repeatedly. Even iMovie HD has the same problem when playing back old HD projects. The streaks also appear if I try playing the files back through Quicktime Player.
How do I know that the upgrade was the issue? As luck would have it, I still had my copy of FCP 5 installed. I opened one of the old HD projects in version 5 format in FCP 5, and the video plays back perfectly. Load the same project into FCP 6, and streaks.
Exactly how is this an "upgrade"? How do I fix?

    Issue
Earlier versions of the applications in Final Cut Studio might not open or may behave unexpectedly if you use them on your computer after upgrading to Final Cut Studio 2.
When you upgrade to Final Cut Studio 2, there are a number of application-support resources that also get upgraded. Earlier versions of the applications in Final Cut Studio are not compatible with these newer support resources, and should not be used on a computer that has been upgraded to Final Cut Studio 2.
    Affected Products:
    Final Cut Pro
    Motion
    Soundtrack Pro
    Compressor
    DVD Studio Pro
    Qmaster
    Cinema Tools
    LiveType
    Solution
Don't move or rename Final Cut Studio applications after they're installed. If you have moved or renamed applications, they may still be present on your hard drive after you upgrade to Final Cut Studio 2. You can delete the vestigial applications them by dragging them to the Trash.

  • Hello.  Can I install a Final Cut Studio 3 Upgrade package using a serial number from an old Final Cut Studio 1 package?

I would like to install Final Cut Studio 7 on my Macbook Pro (2012).
I may be able to get an upgrade package, which will mean I need a previous version of Final Cut Studio to install it.  I have an old Macbook with Final Cut Studio 1 on it.  Could I use the serial number from that version of Final Cut Studio to activate the new upgrade on a new computer?
    Thanks,
    Mark

    Thank you Jim.

  • Final cut studio 2 upgrade problems

i recently purchased the upgrade from final cut studio to final cut studio 2. after entering the upgrade serial number it prompts me for the original serial number. after entering this in, it says number invalid. both copies are store bought and i have tried every variation of the numbers, ie. upper case lower case. i've tried calling the store from which i bought the products but they keep referring me to my installation manual.. please help!!!

    There are two upgrade paths.
One from FCS1 and the other from individual applications.
    The latter is more expensive.
Which did you buy and from what original purchase? If you got the wrong one, it won't upgrade.

  • Quad core versus 8 core for final cut studio

    Hi,
I have previously used adobe premiere cs3 for video editing and am now switching to final cut studio.
My question is: is it worth spending the 600 pounds extra to purchase an 8-core with 2.26 ghz processors as opposed to the 2.66 quad?
Apologies for the repetition...I know there have been similar questions already, and I have read the previous threads on this topic and also the barefoot reviews.
    So far my understanding is:
    1. It is not worth upgrading to the 2.93 quad as there is hardly any difference in performance
    2. The 2.26 ghz 8-core is faster than the 2.66 quad for rendering, etc but slower for some other applications including photo editing.
    3. Officially, there is no way of upgrading the processor of either once bought, although some "DIY upgrades" have been described.
But how does this translate into practice? I would like to hear from someone who uses final cut studio on a quad core - are you happy with the performance? And those with an 8-core - was it worth the extra money? I am planning to upgrade to the ATI HD graphics card, but still not sure on which computer model I should choose.
    Thanks for your help

    The hatter wrote:
you probably have read anything I could say or said already. have you asked in the final cut forum? have you considered the $2400 2008 2.8GHz 8-core?
    http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals/mac/mac_pro
Oh that they were still readily available in the UK - I just missed out on one a couple of weeks ago - as soon as I hit Buy it had gone!
They've got an 8 core 2008 3.2 GHz for £2500 but I'm not convinced it's worth £1,000 more at this stage.

  • Final Cut Studio 2: Requirements and Recommendations

Hello Final Cut Studio 2 Experts,
I'm considering purchasing Final Cut Studi 2, and to make sure that I'll benefit from the full range of specific application (FCS/motion/color...) and I'd like to ask few questions (5 main points) regarding requirements and recommendations. So, please be prepared for much reading as I am not an expert on the matter. I like to know if my computer accepts any further hardware parts highly recommended and if I can purchase and install them myself. And yes, you should also know that I intend to use a Panasonic multi-format (HD/SD) camera for capturing and exporting videos.
N.B. Please note that the full list of my Hardware contents appear at the bottom of this text.
THANKS IN ADVANCE for your expert advise!
    So, here we go:
    Application-Specific Requirements
    Final Cut Studio
Capturing HD resolution video using the ProRes 422 format requires a Mac Pro with an Intel Xeon processor or a G5 Quad computer and a qualified third-party capture card.
    1) Do I need an Intel Xeon processor? If yes, can I purchase and install the component by myself (like RAM)?

NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT, 6800 Ultra DDL, 6800 GT DDL, or Quadro FX 4500
For 32-bit rendering: a graphics card with 256MB of VRAM or more
    Color
The following graphics card is highly recommended:
    ATI Radeon X1900 XT
Dual displays with 1920-by-1200 or higher resolution
    5) Do I have one of the highly recommended cards ATI Radeon X1900 XT etc...? How do I get it and can I install it myself?

SORRY, BUT MY PREVIOUS POSTING DIDN'T HAVE THE FULL LIST OF HARDWARE CONTENTS of my Power Mac G5.
    Motion
The standard graphics card in any Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, iMac with Intel Core Duo, Power Mac G5, or iMac G5; 1.25GHz or faster PowerBook G4; or 1.25GHz or faster flat-panel iMac:
ATI Radeon 9800, 9700 Pro, 9600 XT, or 9600 Pro
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 or 9600
NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GT, 7300 GT, 6600, 6600 LE, FX Go5200, or FX 5200 Ultra
For 16- and 32-bit rendering: a graphics card with at least 128MB of VRAM
    2) Do I need one of the ATI Radeon 9800, 9700... or ATI Mobility Radeon? Why does my Hardware contents say ATI Radeon 9600, and not ATI Mobility Radeon 9600, is there a difference?
    Color
The standard graphics card in any Mac Pro, 17-inch MacBook Pro, 24-inch iMac with Intel Core Duo, or 2.5GHz or faster Power Mac G5 Quad:
    ATI Mobility Radeon X1600
    ATI Radeon X1600
NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT, 7600 GT, 7300 GT, 6600, or Quadro FX 4500
A display with 1680-by-1050 resolution or higher
A three-button mouse for full functionality
    3) Do I need and ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 or ATI Radeon X1600?
    DVD Studio Pro
For playback of DVD Studio Pro 4-authored HD DVDs: a Macintosh computer with a PowerPC G5 or Intel Core Duo processor
For writing finished projects to disc: an Apple SuperDrive or other DVD recorder
For writing finished projects to a double-layer disc: a double-layer-compatible recorder and double-layer media
For transporting HD projects to a replicator: an external drive or Internet transfer of the project’s disk image
For transporting SD projects that contain copy-protection or dual-layer features to a replicator: a DLT drive, external drive, or Internet transfer of the project’s disk image
    4) Do I have an Intel Core Duo processor? Do I need an Apple SuperDrive?
    What is a "replicator"?
    Application-Specific Recommendations
    Motion
One of the following graphics cards is highly recommended:
ATI Radeon X1900 XT, X850 XT, X800 XT, or X1600
NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT, 6800 Ultra DDL, 6800 GT DDL, or Quadro FX 4500
For 32-bit rendering: a graphics card with 256MB of VRAM or more
    Color
The following graphics card is highly recommended:
    ATI Radeon X1900 XT
Dual displays with 1920-by-1200 or higher resolution
    5) Do I have one of the highly recommended cards ATI Radeon X1900 XT etc...? How do I get it and can I install it myself?

  • Final Cut Studio is crashing a lot using a Mac Pro (nehalem) 2009

    Greetings,
I have a video workstation based on a Mac Pro (2x2.26GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon Nehalem, 6 GB RAM, 640 GB HD, 512 NVIDEA VRAM) with a Blackmagic Decklink HD Extreme 2009 and an Highpoint RocketRAID 4322 card (properly connected to a RAID 5 array).
I'm editing, with Final Cut Studio 3, a big TV project with some TGA and loads of HD XDCAM EX 35mbs video footage.
    *What is happening wrong?*
Final Cut Pro is crashing to many times and dont let me work with the flow that is supposed. I start to work and i do a bit of scrubbing in the timeline and suddenly the rainbow spyral starts to spin and kaput! FCP just crashes.
I've tried to many things. Re-installing everything from the baseline, plug out the 2 PCIe cards (and not even the drivers are installed). Even so FCP still crashes with the project.
Funny thing is... This symptom only happens with the Nehalem Mac Pro. I have another station based on a Mac Pro 2x2.66 GHz Dual Core Xeon 3 GB RAM 2006 and when i run the project... everything works fine. FCP here doesn't crash.
This is what makes me believe that the problem must be with the new Mac Pro.
I have the reports generated by the FCP after the crash. You can find it here:

I'm getting frustrated because i've invested big in this workstation, safe in the knowledge that it was going to be stable to complete my requirements.
Is there anything that i or Apple can do to resolve my problem. Is it the processor? Extended Hardware Test says that everything is ok.
    I'll be waiting,
    best regards, thanks,
    Pedro

I see you have the GT120, not a very nice card really but maybe it is 'enough.' I'd upgrade. To ATI Radeon 4870, once you get it stable and working.

I see your crash is kernel panic actually.
    Exception Type: EXCBADACCESS (SIGBUS)
    Exception Codes: KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE at 0x0000000000000000
    Crashed Thread: 194
Almost always that is memory related, are you seeing parity errors?
Watch System Profile - Memory tab
Replace the RAM (I'd even up it to more memory, 6 x 2GB is what I would have configured for)
Have you tested your RAM? run Apple Hardware Test?
Disabled ALL USB and Firewire devices?
Is the RR4322 okay to run in slot #2 (16x) rather than in slot 3 or 4 (4x)?
Getting RAM replaced, advanced exchange, or go out and getting some Kingston or Crucial etc for your system, and swapping, really is one good method, trial and error, to find the cultprit or rule out RAM.
Errors like this can mean flushing your caches is a must, and possibly due to errors and crashes, clean system install, checking data (both time consuming) and being careful to recheck your drives with Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro 5 to insure there are not any corrupt files (not perfect either which is why restore the system from known good backup image can be a must).
