Quadro 5000 and Geforce

hi everyone, I'm basicly using maya, nuke and sometimes adobe programs. my pc is 3 years old second gen i7, it's still good but I'm about to get a heavy project and it's time to get a new one for me.
1- I need to learn if I can use geforce and quadro (sli or separate) cards on my desktop pc.
drivers and programs will run okay?
2- I'm about to get 3770k cpu and quadro 5000, but I can't decide what is best motherboard to use on this rig.
regards,

Here's how GPU performance can slow down on an LGA 1155 platform: The CPU itself has only 16 available PCI-e lanes. Normally, all 16 of those lanes are fed to the GPU that's sitting in the primary PCI-e x16 slot. But on most LGA 1155 motherboards, if you add a second GPU, then the bandwidth of the primary PCI-e x16 slot will drop to only x8 bandwidth because the secondary PCI-e x16 slot would then steal eight of those PCI-e lanes from the primary x16 slot. (There are a few LGA 1155 motherboards that maintain x16 bandwidth in the primary x16 slot even with a second GPU installed - but that is because the "secondary" x16-length slot is actually only an x4 slot, run off of the P67/Z68/Z77 PCH in PCI-e 2.0 x4 mode, instead of directly off of the CPU.) (By the way, LGA 1155 CPUs have 20 total PCI-e lanes - but four of those are actually fed to the P67/Z68/Z77 PCH, making only 16 lanes available for GPUs.)
And we've been advising against the Quadro 5000 because it is now two generations old, and as such outdated. In fact, it dates all the way back to 2010 when the first-generation hexacore i7, the i7-980X, was brand new (Sandy Bridge was not yet on the market back then). As a GPU, it is no faster than an old GeForce GTX 465 that it's based on because although both GPUs have 352 CUDA cores, the Quadro 5000's low actual clock speed of 513MHz (compared to the 607 MHz of the GTX 465) completely offsets the Quadro 5000's higher memory bandwidth of 120 GB/s (versus 102.6 GB/s on the GTX 465). Yet it still costs more than $1,500 new, even today. That's extremely severely overpriced for a GPU that's only going to be used in a secondary capacity, with the GPU going almost completely unutilized most of the time.
Finally, there is the issue of driver compatibility: GeForce drivers generally do not work with Quadros, nor do Quadro drivers work with GeForces. And there is a good chance that the two drivers will conflict with one another, seriously affecting stability and performance. That is more likely to occur if the GeForce and Quadro cards are of two completely different GPU generations (for example, that Quadro 5000 that you're considering may clash with the GeForce 600-series GPU that's being used as primary). So, to minimize the risk of such conflicts, only consider a K-series Quadro if you need 10-bit output for a system that normally uses a GeForce GTX 600-series GPU. (This means that as a secondary output GPU for 10-bit monitors, a $400 Quadro K2000 or even a $200 Quadro K600 would suffice as a secondary output card.)
And no, the LGA 2011 platform with its i7-39xx CPU is not a first-generation i7. It is actually considered a second-generation i7 (like the i7-3770K's predecessor, the i7-2600K/2700K).

  • Nvidia Quadro 4000 and GeForce GT 120

    Hi,
    I currently have 2 CUDA cards in my MacPro and I know that PPro can only use one card at a time.  I'm just trying to figure out if it is possible to tell which card PPro is using for CUDA acceleration, or hopefully to point PPro to the card I want it to use?
    I'm testing out Davinci Resolve and have added a GT 120 to my system which I've put in Slot 1, and moved my Quadro 4000 to Slot 2 as per the Resolve specs.
    The way I'm understanding it, is that PPro is using the GT 120 now instead of the 4000.  I've noticed today a couple of outright crashes of PPro.  I'm wondering it the GT 120 is responsible for that.  (I did put in a Speed/Duration of 100% reverse on a clip which I think may be the problem)
    My concern is that I want to continue to use the Quadro 4000 with PPro (I'm thinking, for the price I paid, it should be the higher preforming card), and not have it just sitting there, only getting used by DaVinci.
    I guess my question really is, if I am not sold on going with DaVinci, does make any sense to keep the GT 120 in my tower if PPro is my main editor?
    Also on a related note... is the GT 120 a better preforming card with AE? A quick render test did show the GT 120 render a comp 43secs as opposed to 62sec by the 4000.
    Any insight is appreciated.
    Thanks,

    one quick addition... I know the GT 120 is not a "supported" card, but I am getting Mercury Hardware playback... that's why i'm not sure if the 4000 is being used.   What's leading to my confusion is the fact that After Effects will only use the GT 120 for OpenCL if both cards are installed (in either slot 1 or 2, the order doesn't seem to matter).

  • Put a Quadro 5000 into an Alienware Area-51 Machine...?

    Please excuse my ignorance!  Just searching for answers!
    I was looking on Dell to buy a computer for cs5 and MPE and found the workstations way more expensive than alienware!!
    So I thought maybe I could go with alienware area 51 with i970 six core 3.23, 12gb 1600 ddr3, and replace the graphics card with a nvidia quadro 5000, but a dell rep (Melinda) said that I couldnt do that because the Q 5000 wouldn't fit into the area 51?  Is this true?
    I was told that the alienware area 51 has a "3 PClex 16 for graphics card" but can't find what kind of slot the Q 5000 uses?
    If I CAN just swap out the graphics card, would this area 51 machine good enough to run cs5 and MPE?
    I don't need "top of the line", just need to be able to run ppcs5 with MPE with little to no headaches (rendering times).
    thank you for your help

    Hi Sean,
    Thank you for your information!
    The Dell's rep name was "Melinda", and if she is giving false information, then I think something needs to be done about it.
    I have never been one to "hack" and to be honest, I am weary of the hack that needs to be done in order to use the gtx580, jsut because I've never done it.  But, I have found a youtube video that shows how to do the hack (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jj4ERi5t_Eo&) and it seems pretty easy.
    Harm's benchmark site shows numerous people using the gtx580, and he swears by it, as do others on the web.
    The difference in price of the quadro 5000 and gtx 580 isn't worth "cooler, quieter, and uses less power" in my opinion.

  • Quadro 5000 issue with PS CS6

    I have an Ivy Bridge system running a Quadro 5000 and when I turn on GPU acceleration I get noise on the display, it looks like splotches of interlacing noise.
    I've contacted Nvidia and they are less than helpful, if their beta drivers don't fix it it must be the application, that's their view.
    I'm not sure how this card even made it on the compatibility list, until the most recent driver you couldn't even load the LUT without errors if you use 64bit Win 7.
    Has anyone got this config working?

    If you can still access that drive, it is better to deactivate that computer before switching drives. If you can not do so, then contact Adobe using the video chat app on the web site and ask for your computers to be deactivated. You can then reactivate the working computer, then the fixed computer when it is done.

  • Looking for how to run both a Quadro 4000 and a geforce card win7 please

    hello,
    way back when i built the window 7 editing rig i tried to get a quadro 4000 and a geforce 9800 GT (older version) to work together to get 4 displays going
    but i had stability issues so i got another quadro and never had a problem
    however, reading this recent thread
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1258243?tstart=0
    it sounds like users are able to mix quadro 4000 with geforce cards
    using the geforce for the cuda processing and the quadro for the output
    i still want to run 4 monitors (2 from the quadro 4000 and then 2 from the geforce card (open to suggestions here)
    if i can mix cards now i'd like to get a geforce gpu to help out with 4k editing of a feature (probably red scarlet)
    and use the quadro for 10bit output
    as always positive feedback is appreciated, cheers, j

    hello,
    no i am still sticking with cs6 for now
    and i found where i had read the instructions before
    (an answer to one of my own previously asked questions):
    Install Quadro Driver full installation via Wizard.
    Decompress Geforce Driver latest version but do not run Wizard install.
    Manually update Geforce Card driver via Device manager by pointing to Nvidia/Geforce folder
    Launch Nvidia Control Panel and set the GPU Acceleration to Geforce card only.
    Eric

    i guess this wraps this one up
    thanks for taking the time to read
    sorry for wasting your time

  • Bad performance quadro 4800 and premiere pro

    Could someone please help me understand if somethings wrong with my settings or if my 4800 is defected?
    I run OSX Lion 10.7.2 and have the quadro fx 4800 installed in a:
    Mac Pro 4,1
    2 x 2.93Ghz Quad-core Intel Xeon
    12GB of Ram
    with two additional Geforce GT 120 installed too.
    the latest drivers for the 4800
    GPU driver version: 7.12.9 270.05.10f03
    CUDA driver version: 4.0.50
    I run Premiere 5.5.2 and have tested the performance with the two different settings:
    Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration
    Mercury Playback Engine Software Only
    I did this test because I didn’t feel my 4800 did the work I’ve read everywhere it should. Adding simple text titles to AVCHD footage made my playback drop frames.
    Anyhow, I tested my machine with 1920x1080 AVCHD and added video layers until I started to see stutter during playback. First with “Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration”. With 14 video layers sized down so you could see them all beside one another playback started to drop frames. The yellow line was still yellow in the top of the timeline. Shouldn’t it turn red if the footage needs rendering?
    I then switched to “Mercury Playback Engine Software Only” and the yellow line turned red. The strange thing is that when I played back the same 14 layers of video the dropped frames where gone!! Isn’t this beyond strange??? Shouldn’t everything run more smooth with the “Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration”?
    Has it got anything to do with my Geforce GT 120 installed? Should I get rid of those? My two 24 inch apple displays are both connected to the 4800.
    PLEASE help me or redirect me to some good forums!

    After testing final cut (which I love) and Premiere back and forth with the exact same media I notice that editing prores in Final cut is the best when it comes to just edit the film. Sure Premiere does take native MTS files but what good is this when it doesn't run fluidly? Comparing playback and editing with prores in Final Cut and Premiere makes me realize that on my computer, don't ask me why, a rendered sequence with prores material in Premiere is far more jerky than a sequence with prores that "do not need render" in Final cut. Shouldn't they be the same?? Movements like camera pans that originally were shot really smoothly isn't as smooth as they should be playing back in premiere (and yes I know I got the right sequence settings and all). Final cut however gives me what I want.
    To me it all comes down to how good the editing App presents what you currently are editing. Adobe has many advantages with the dynamic link and so on but playback is a such an important part of editing!! Has anyone got the same problem with "not as smooth playback as you would really want" even though the sequence is rendered displaying a green line??
    Thanks for the links lasvideo but I practically read every article there is about CUDA, premiere and mercury playback engine already.
    Anyone knows anything about Adobe CS 6 release dates?

  • Quadro 5000 ($1,749.00) or GTX 690 ($1,270.99)

    I use Premiere Pro CS6 with DSLR (h.264) and FS700 (AVCHD) footage and it's begginning to lag on my machine as my projects get more complex. I also use Adobe After Effects CS6 for motion graphics and occassionally some vfx.
    I need to know what experts' opinions are on choosing the Quadro 5000 or the GTX 690?

    yash-lucid wrote:
    What would you do with
    1x 1Tb 5400rpm (main win7 drive, footage is edited on this and programs are stored)
    2x 2Tb 7200rpm (1 contains archived projects and the other is a backup of it)
    2x 3Tb 7200rpm (fresh, not used yet)
    and a 500gb 7200rpm (random files)
    The fact that you're editing footage on the same drive as the OS is the problem: The SATA interface cannot handle simultaneous reads and writes because it is only a half-duplex interface. That is, a block of transfers in one direction must be completed before any transfers begin in the opposite direction. So, despite the fact that you have multiple hard drives installed, your editing configuration effective renders your system to have only a single work disk for absolutely everything, which severely slows down editing performance. Worse, that single 5400rpm work disk is slower than any of the other disks in your system (both sequential speed wise and random access speed wise), which means that your system is effectively slower than systems that are one to two CPU generations older than yours. (In the case of your i7-930, it can be slower than a Core 2 Quad or even a Core 2 Duo or Pentium D with correctly configured disk setups.)
    Thus, I would use the 500GB 7200rpm drive for just the Win7 OS, Windows pagefile and programs, one of your unused 3TB 7200rpm disks for your media and project files, the other 3TB drive for an archive of your media and project files, both of your 2TB disks in RAID 0 for media cache and exports, and the 1TB 5400rpm drive for backups of your already transcoded files.

  • Quadro 5000 openGL problem!

    i recently installed a pny quadro 5000 replacing an ati 5970 2gb gaming card. here is my system:
    core i7 920
    12gb 1066mhz corsair
    asus rampage 2 extreme
    thermaltake 875w psu
    no overclocking
    photoshop cs4 extended 64bits
    win7 ultimate 64bits
    when openGL enabled and i open a new bitmap document, photoshop(64bit) tells me my video card doesnt meet the minimum requirements needed to run openGL.
    win7 and production premium are up to date and i installed the latest full driver from nvidia website.(it was later version than the one in manufacturers drivers cd.
    old drivers were completely removed. photoshop prefs were reset.

    Regarding a direct answer to your question about installing as Administrator, all modern software should understand the Windows UAC mechanism.  It really should not be necessary to run the latest installers as Administrator.
    As I mentioned, a number of people have reported problems with Quadro cards and Photoshop CS5 (though I personally have a Quadro FX 3500 in one of my machines, and it runs fine).  If you don't find a solution soon, this may be something you want to take up with the nVidia support people.  With such an expensive video card one should expect very good support.

  • Error -5000 and: Error when loading the transcode setting

    For a couple of days I've been trying to export my project on a DVD, but on the half way of the transcoding it comes the Error -5000, and then there is such a message, something about the navigation, can't be found etc... I work on a mac OS X, using Encore CS3, all my data I've got on my external harddisk, with space of 80 GB.
    Besides, when I'm trying to export my project on a blu-ray disc, there comes a message: Error when loading the transcode setting! I know that there are only two codecs there - H.264 and MPEG-2, and there are only MPEG-2 movie files there, so I set the MPEG-2 codec. And there comes such a thing! Having set the H.264, there comes the same. What can it be?
    And the last one is the copy protection. I know that it can be activated, with CGMS and Macrovision, only if the CSS option is set on "permit no copies". So I do, and then there comes a message - "for these settings there is no copy protection provided". So what now to do?

    My flash drive PNY comes up with error -5000 and i do not know what to do can you help me with this problems

  • 45 min long session of log file sync waits between 5000 and 20000 ms

    45 min long log file sync waits between 5000 and 20000 ms
    Encountering a rather unusual performance issue. Once every 4 hours I am seeing a 45 minute long log file sync wait event being reported using Spotlight on Oracle. For the first 30 minutes the event wait is for approx 5000 ms, followed by an increase to around 20000 ms for the next 15 min before rapidly dropping off and normal operation continues for the next 3 hours and 15 minutes before the cycle repeats itself. The issue appears to maintain it's schedule independently of restarting the database. Statspack reports do not show an increase in commits or executions or any new sql running during the time the issue is occuring. We have two production environments both running identicle applications with similar usage and we do not see the issue on the other system. I am leaning towards this being a hardware issue, but the 4 hour interval regardless of load on the database has me baffled. If it were a disk or controller cache issue one would expect to see the interval change with database load.
    I cycle my redo logs and archive them just fine with log file switches every 15-20 minutes. Even during this unusally long and high session of log file sync waits I can see that the redo log files are still switching and are being archived.
    The redo logs are on a RAID 10, we have 4 redo logs at 1 GB each.
    I've run statspack reports on hourly intervals around this event:
    Top 5 Wait Events
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Wait % Total
    Event Waits Time (cs) Wt Time
    log file sync 756,729 2,538,034 88.47
    enqueue 810 21,423 .75
    log file sequential read 65,540 14,480 .50
    And here is a sample while not encountering the issue:
    Top 5 Wait Events
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Wait % Total
    Event Waits Time (cs) Wt Time
    log file sync 953,037 195,513 53.43

    log file sequential read 98,310 18,848 5.15
    db file scattered read 67,584 2,427 .66
    Yes I know I am already tight on I/O for my redo even during normal operations yet, my redo and archiving works just fine for 3 hours and 15 minutes (11 to 15 log file switches). These normal switches result in a log file sync wait of about 5000 ms for about 45 seconds while the 1GB redo log is being written and then archived.
    I welcome any and all feedback.

    Lee,
    log_buffer = 1048576 we use a standard of 1 MB for our buffer cache, we've not altered the setting. It is my understanding that Oracle typically recommends that you not exceed 1MB for the log_buffer, stating that a larger buffer normally does not increase performance.
    I would agree that tuning the log_buffer parameter may be a place to consider; however, this issue last for ~45 minutes once every 4 hours regardless of database load. So for 3 hours and 15 minutes during both peak usage and low usage the buffer cache, redo log and archival processes run just fine.

    show cfs lock gives no output.
    Just to further clarify, we have 4 5548UP switches in the same management vlan. 2 switches are in one location lets say location A and they are CFS peers and are working fine.
    These two switches which are having problem are in location B. All the switches are in the same vlan. Essentially the all CFS multicast messages will be seen by all 5548 switches as they are in the same vlan. I am assuming that this might not create any problems as we specify the peers in the respective configurations. Or do we have to change the CFSoIPv4 multicast addresses in location B or may be configure a different region.
    Regards.

  • Error -5000 and -3253 while downloading

    i just bought the Beatles box set
    it is composed of songs, videos and LPs
    on most of the LP (read here most not all) i have the error -5000
    and on 2 videos i have error -3253
    from what i have understood error -5000 if a problem with access permissions on my computer
    if so why some LP have been correctly downloaded and others don't?
    and what is error -3253?

    I just spent over an hour on the phone and working through Remote Advisor w/an Apple Technician (AT) going through a plethora of troubleshooting items - all to no avail.
    The AT did provide me with his/her specific contact information and promised to get back to me with an update within 24-hours.  Although there is no resolution at this time, I do at least have the comfort knowing that this issue has indeed been forwarded to the Engineering team for them to review and address.
    I just hope that this is resolved sooner rather than later.
    And as an FYI I did suggest that they check out the Community Forums to get better understanding that this is not an issue specific to me alone but to a much broader group.

  • SAN Port-Channel between Nexus 5000 and Brocade 5100

    I have a Nexus 5000 running in NPV mode connected to a Brocade 5100 FC switch using two FC ports on a native FC module in the Nexus 5000. I would like to configure these two physical links as one logical link using a SAN Port-Channel/ISL-Trunk. An ISL trunking license is already installed on the Brocade 5100. The Nexus 5000 is running NX-OS 4.2(1), the Brocade 5100 Fabric OS 6.20. Does anybody know if this is a supported configuration? If so, how can this be configured on the Nexus 5000 and the Brocade 5100? Thank you in advance for any comments.
    Best regards,
    Florian

    I tried that and I could see the status light on the ports come on but it still showed not connected.
    I configured another switch (a 3560) with the same config and the same layout with the fiber and I got the connection up on it. I just cant seem to get it on the 4506, would it be something with the supervisor? Could it be wanting to use the 10gb port instead of the 1gb ports?
