Quadro FX 3800 spdif pin identification

Hi,
I have a Quadro FX 3800 graphics card. I am attempting to hook up the Spdif connection between the card and the Spdif-out on my motherboard. The motherboard pins are identified (GRND, etc) but the Spdif pins on the card are not.. I have checked the circuit, top and sides of the board; documentation, web search - including the Nvidia and PNY websites (PNY markets the same board). I was wondering if anyone could identify the Ground and Spdif pin orientation from their own setup? (For example.: Is the Ground pin or the Spdif pin closest to the 4 pin mini-din connection located adjacent to the Spdif pins.)
I know a simple solution might be to try the cable in either orientation and see what way provides sound through the display port, but here is why I would rather not: Motherboard Spif > Quadro > displayport > hdmi adapter > video processor > video processor pass-through > receiver. As you can see, I need to ensure proper pin placement first, as there are too many other variables that may be responsible for no audio being produced out of the speakers!
Thanks in advance,
Greg

the FX 3800 would somehow need an audio signal connected to the board for it to output audio.   as far as i know, the 3800 does not have an internal audio connector.   i have a 4800 and know for a fact that it cannot output audio over displayport.   i'm sure the rest of the workstation cards are the same.
some of nvidia's desktop cards have a two-pin audio connector on the side of the card that can connect with your sound card to output audio over HDMI.   if you need this feature, perhaps you should consider a desktop card rather than a workstation card.

  • Preview freezes with Quadro FX 3800 (Pr CS5.03)

Just wanted to check quickly if anyone else seen this.  I consistently (i.e. always) get a display driver error on a specific system under all of the following circumstances:
    GPU Aceleration enabled
    Quadro FX 3800 installed
    The timeline includes a title
The moment the timeline cursor wanders into the title, the preview window in Pr freezes.  The audio continues playing.  In order to get the preview back, I need to restart Premiere.  Sometimes the freeze is followed by an NVidia error message, display driver encountered an error and has recovered.  Doesn't matter if you scrub or play - the same error.
The error does not happen with a different graphics card (Quadro CX == FX 4800).
The error does not happen when the MPE is set to software rather than GPU-accelerated.
The error happens regardless of the display driver (tried three), sequence settings, user environment, Premiere Pro settings (cleared them once).
I haven't yet tried to re-install Pr (it's just too much work) or the OS (even more work).  Just wanted to check if anyone else seen this.
The system is an HP Z800 (FM012UT, one Xeon X5667 3.06GHz, 12GB RAM, 320GB 1st HDD, PNY Quadro FX 3800 1GB graphics, 6TB Media Array RAID0 3x 2TB), Matrox MXO2 LE (currently disconnected).  It's been kept pristine by the client (minimum if any changes since delivered in July 2010).
    The problem could be:
Software configuration of this specific system (but not the graphics card): e.g. some corrupted file in the OS or CS5 that causes the error.  Re-installing the OS and/or CS5 would fix it.  The question is though, why only FX 3800 and not CX?
    A hardware error on this specific Quadro FX 3800.  Replacing it with another FX 3800 would fix it;
Some sort of a generic incompatibility of Pr CS5 with Quadro FX 3800.
My next step is to pop that FX 3800 into a known good system, install CS5 on it and see if the problem recurs.  I dread it.
    Thanks for any ideas.

The problem is also happening on a known good system with the same FX 3800.  The problem does not happen on either system with a different graphics card (Quadro CX).
    That leaves two choices:
Premiere Pro CS5.03 problem with GPU acceleration on Quadro FX 3800
The Quadro FX 3800 I have in my hands is defective.
Anyone else has a Quadro FX 3800 and Premiere Pro CS5.03?  Could you please try dropping a title on a timeline, scrub it a couple of times; change MPE to "software"; then to "GPU acceleration again (delete previews), and scrub again.  Same problem? No problem?
    Thanks!

  • Definitive answer? Quadro FX 3800 & CS5 Mercury engine

I've searched through some of the forums before posting this message, and I seem to be getting conflicting messages about whether the Nvidia Quadro FX-3800 will be able to utilize the Mercury engine in CS5?
I'm thinking of buying this card (thr other models are out of my price range) and I don't want to make an expensive mistake!
    Mike.

I have never seen a single conflcting message regarding this Card.
It has been an absolute in all advanced announcements of the MPE and I heap praise on the way Adobe "leaked" us this fact so that those of us planning new systems could do so  with confidence.
I bought and am now running one.

  • NVIDIA Quadro FX 3800 question

Having just ordered a Quadro FX 3800 I looked at the specifications from the manufacturer, Lenovo, and find what appears to be specifications that are printed in error, I hope.
My question; since there are several manufacturers of this graphics card are all NVIDIA Quadro FX 3800 cards built to NVIDIA's specifications?
Also, has anyone here purchased this card made by Lenovo?
FYI, the specifications as written by Lenovo are confusing as per the following:
    - it references the 1GB memory as "1GB Dual DisplayPort"  without a comma between the 1GB and the DisplayPort
As well for the memory it denotes the following which appears to be a completely different card...
    - Video RAM maximum 256 MB
    - Video RAM std/max 256MB
    - Video RAM type GDDR3
I purchased this through CDW where the specifications are correctly denoted.
Trusting none of you are offended this not being a Premier CS5 question, however the card is being purchased for this program
    Cheers,
    Michael

    Thank you Harm
You are correct the only references to "chip set from nVidia" that I've read were to other than Quadro FX cards.
In this case Lenovo's inaccurate specifications (i.e. referencing an different card "Quadro NVS 295" under "Graphics specification") was the reason for this post.
Thank you again for your response and I'll know in a few days ...
Regarding your comment   -  "whether you want to spend around 5-6 times the price for a lesser specced Quadro, just because it is a Quadro instead of a GTX, that is completely up to you"   I'm curious what you mean by that?
    Cheers,
    Michael

  • Quadro FX 3800

    Hi,
Does anyone know if the FX 3800 (45K1673) graphics card comes bundled with Elemental Technologies' "Elemental Accelerator"?
    Thanks,
    Greg

    welcome to the forum!
the FX 3800 offered by lenovo includes the card itself and a basic set of drivers on CD.
you can purchase elemental accellerator at a discounted price through nvidia (link) once you have a qualifying quadro FX card in your possession.   the discounted price is $250 USD.
otherwise, if you wish to purchase a bundled card, you will need to buy the version offered by PNY.   the part number is VCQFX3800-ELEM-PB.

  • Spdif connection to 3 pin header (KM2M)

I can't find a back plane fitting for this. The manual shows a connection for two of the three pins only (VCC & SPDIF (pin 3 nc)). I want to assume that one of the connections is a ground as I can make a back panel connector with a grounded RCA jack but I can't find a specification anywhere. Does anybody know the actual specification?

Nothing to do with overclocking or modding.
The S-bracket comes with my 875 Neo-Fis2R mobo as standard.  What I want to know is whether there should be any 'red' light at the end of the optical cable when the optical cable is plugged into the S-bracket (and of course the S-bracket is connected to the mobo).  I remembered that it should be this way but currently, there is no 'red' light for my case and even though I had managed to get a replacement S-bracket, still same problem.  I had tried with another optical cable which was confirmed good (from my Hifi amplifier) but also no 'red' light when plugged into the S-bracket.

  • Geforce titan or quadro k4000?

    Hello all -
I'm hoping to get a little help/clarification on which card would better suit my needs, and appreciate any/all help. I'm probably at an intermediate level of understanding when it comes to the technical aspects of computers, so some of the finer points escape me.
In short, i'm looking at two graphics cards to purchase as an upgrade: the geforce titan http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gtx-titan/specifications or the quadro k4000 http://www.nvidia.com/object/quadro-desktop-gpus.html  .
Currently, my setup is as follows:
Intel Motherboard Dual Socket Xeon S5520SC
Intel Xeon CPU Fan Heatsink STS100C
    2 x 2.26GHz Intel "Nehalem" Xeon Quad Core [8MB]
    12GB 1333MHz DDR3 Triple Channel SDRAM (6 x 2GB)
1TB High Speed Hard Drive [64MB Cache, 7200RPM]
    StormDrive Dual Layer CD/DVD Writer
    850W Silent Power Supply
    Windows 7 Pro [64-bit]
NVIDIA Quadro FX 3800 Workstation Graphics Accelerator [1GB]
PCI 3 Port FireWire [TI Chipset]
(additional) 1TB High Performance Drive [64MB Cache SATA 3 6GB]
I use my workstation for projects and not gaming. And i used CS5 and Toon Boon Harmony as my two mediums for editing/creation. With CS5, it's my understanding that the quadro cards are preferred as they utilize some useful functions (such as mercury playback), and that they handle after effects better for the 3d issues. Conversely, Toon Boom Harmony suggests a geforce card over a quadro, as it corresponds with their software more "inherently" than a quadro. Granted, both programs would work well with either type of card, but is there one that is better fit to run both? And given my setup listed above, would the Titan card be massive overkill/be bottlenecked by slower components? Additionally, can anyone testify to a head to head matchup between these two cards?
    Thanks.

I listed observations and testing results. The editing applications that have GPU acceleration and perform better with Geforce cards are professional applications used in all the media content creation industry. Davinci and Adobe are far more prevalent now than what few applications that benefit from the Quadro Open GL plugins. GPU acceleration in general has supplanted Open GL as the primary GPU processing. Since it has, the raw specs of the cards decide the performance. This has been tested and shown with results by far more people than myself. So these are not opinions. The 700 series cards are showing greater performance than the previous gen Nvidia cards so obviously the cards were not limited that much if at all. The applications caching models are currently limiting the performance of the current cards as are the CPU's available. The CPU's themselves have to decode the data first that get's GPU processed and create all of the buffers that transit the data down to the GPU for processing. That is where the current limitation is for the GPU processing load. GPU-Z is reflecting this when monitoring the GPU load during application processing. Only certain codecs with resolutions greater than 2K such as red are using enough frame data to really push the cards. This points to applications limiting performance and not the hardware. There are far more applications now using GPU acceleration that gain the benefit from the specs of the cards than there are applications that take advantage of the Quadro Open GL plugins
Nothing you have mentioned supports any professional stability argument for the Quadro cards. I actually listed a current problem with the Quadro cards that effects any processing unit and that is heat. That has been observed in testing and long term support here with failed video cards. The Quadro k4000 series due to the single slot profile, limited cooling, and poor fan control has the highest failure rate. Those cards are averaging well over 80+C with GPU acceleration applications especially since they are using lower end GPU chips that are often at 75% load or greater. Time, experience, and results show the higher end Geforce cards have a higher stability probability due to heat generation and constant long term load percentage. The only reason scientific, medical, and engineering GPU acceleration applications are used with the Quadro cards is the ECC ram option. When processing data sets that take weeks to complete or have extremely high cost involved in research, errors due to GPU ram is not something those R&D entities want to risk. In those scenarios the Quadro cards are the best choice. That is the only stability based advantage the Quadro cards bring to the table. That however no real impact on media content creation which we are discussing in this forum.
Results and observations don't require a resume of experience to validate. Simply perform the testing as other have done like myself and list them here. I am stating results and observations that have been reported by many others so the validation is the simply the number of results that reflect the same data. If you disagree then report your results and let others either duplicate or disprove. That is not blind faith but simply data. Listing a bunch of marketing material as facts does nothing to validate your argument and are not facts as you state. They are marketing points that can be interpreted any number of ways hence the lack of any real value to the actual editors or content industry in general.

  • New Quadro FX cards 2010

    Hi everyone,
i just want  to confirm if there will be new Quadro cards to be released some time in  the following weeks/months..
I saw on the other thread, "The FX4800 is  end-of-life, the successor is expected to be announced  this month.... -  Harm Millaard"
I search all over the internet and i couldn't find any  news about the "new" quadro cards.
I was keeping an eye on the Quadro FX  3800/4800. Should i hold off for now until Nvidia announces the release  of their "new" Quadro cards?
i am using AutoCAD, 3ds max, Adobe After Effects  CS5, Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.
    Thank you very much.
P.S. Thank you, Harm for posting a lot of incredible  information about video editing =)
    -Mark

you are far better off with the 470 than a 3800/4800.
the 3800/4800 are based on the GTX 260
the newer Quadros will be based on 470/480 with only the most expensive one begin the 480.
    EG: the 5800 is a 285
the 470 will be supported with the next update coming soon
    so dont waste your money

  • Poor Mercury Playback Performance - Quadro FX3800

    Hi guys,
I just bought a brand new Quadro FX3800 in hopes of using the Mercury Playback Engine in Premiere Pro CS5.
I just had it installed and tested it and although I can use it, its extremely jerky and choppy and then it crashes the program.
    I have 16GB RAM installed in a Win7 64, and Quad Core Q9550 running at 2.83Ghz.
Is there something I'm doing wrong? I've installed the latest drivers.
Thanks so much for all your help and advice on how to get the Mercury Engine working for me.
    Mark Shian

    prismshian,
The Quadro FX 3800 isn't that fast of a GPU by today's standards. In fact, it's now three GPU generations old, being based on a cut-down GTX 260 with only a 256-bit DDR3 VRAM bus instead of the 448-bit VRAM bus used in the GTX 260 itself. With such specs, expect it to be slower than even a cheapo GTX 550 Ti.
Same thing with your system's Core 2 Quad Q9550: I had the Q9450 (its slower-clocked brother, running at 2.66GHz instead of 2.83GHz). If my results in the PPBM5 results list are any indication, expect even the Q9550 (unless heavily overclocked) to perform slower than even a cheapo dual-core i3-21xx (with all other components identical between the two systems). If my i3-2100 dual-core can achieve a result of 500-ish seconds in PPBM5, don't expect a stock-speed Q9550 to be any faster than about 600-ish seconds in that same PPBM5 benchmark.
So in other words, for performance that's meaningfully faster than your current setup equipped with the GPU that you had prior to your wasting money on that FX 3800, you will need an entire new build altogether. In fact, with the amount of money that you wasted on that FX 3800 by itself, you could have purchased most of the guts of an entirely new, modern Ivy Bridge quad-core build (namely, an i5-3570K CPU, a good Z77 motherboard, 16GB of DDR3-1333 or DDR3-1600 RAM, a 500GB HDD plus a 1TB HDD and a GeForce GTX 560 Ti).

  • SPDIF bracket on K7N2GM2-LSR

I have a K7N2GM2-LSR mobo in my HTPC. There is a JSP1 connector on the mobo which connects to SPDIF Out bracket, but unfortunatelly, the bracket was not included in the bundle.
Now, I have 2 choices to use SPDIF Out:
    1) Get the SPDIF Out bracket. Does anyone know where I can buy it? The bracket I need is NOT the famous "S-Bracket". It is simply called "SPDIF bracket".
    2) Make the bracket myself. As far as soldering and electronics go, I have some experience, but I have never worked with SPDIF.
There are 3 SPDIF pins on the motherboard connector: VCC, SPDIFO, GRND.
I assume that SPDIFO is the data-out connector and connects to inner part of the jack. GRND is ground and connects to outer part of the jack. VCC is 5V power connector, but I am not sure what to do with it, because I can connect only 2 wires to a single SPDIF plug. Above are only my assumptions, I may be wrong.
If there is anyone experienced in SPDIF area, please share...
    Thanks in advance,
    Piiooo

Just recently put together a PC using this mobo.  found the SPDIF bracket at www.censuspc.com.  link below:

it came USPS in a few days to central US.
I haven't been able to get any audio through the optical port yet.  Audio through the RCA jack works fine for me.

  • Caution, nVIDIA Quadro FX cards may not support DirextX 11

Anyone thinking or acquiring any of these cards be careful if DirectX 11 is something you will need in the future.
During September when researching the Quadro FX cards one of my criteria was that it supports DirectX 11.
At that time their latest driver version indicated it does support DirectX 11.  Only recently when running a program that requires it did I find out the card does not support DirectX 11  !
So now I've got to look at something else to replace this card.  Anyone here want it?
    Not so cheerful,
    Michael

The card in question is the Quadro FX 3800.
However, my colleague has the Quadro FX 4800 and will run into the same problem.
Regarding running the DirectX update from Microsoft, the answer is yes I did.
The NVIDA Customer Care representative's response was as follows (I really wish one could copy and paste this):
"I apologize for the inconvenience.  I must add though that the 259.81 Driver Package is generic to a lot of devices.  The idea behind this is to streamline the process of driver packaging.  Whilst the 259.81 drivers support DX 11 it requires a card to support DX 11 to work successfully."
Checking NVIDIA's product lineup this means only the 5000 series and up support DirectX 11.
What disturbes me, that there is no mention in the driver's web site description indicating this card is excluded.  To the contrary it is listed as being included!
As well the fact that this "customer care" representative alludes to my incompitence in not checking the specifications...
    Cheers

  • Spindif pins

I would like to know where or even where the TWO pins are on my XFI music card are at so I get my video card to carry the sound to my TV?? I see the the spdif pins all eight of them .....but no matter what config. I use it still doesn't send sound thru..... I drop off the speakers and just the spdif only....by the way the video card is XFX 260gtx black....now the other interesting thing is that I can hook the spdif from on board and get sound thru HDMI cable to TV?.....
