Quadro FX cards with Color (and FCS2 in general)

I have read in other forums that there are some issues with nvidia cards in general with OSX and some applications (Maya for instance), but was wondering if anyone has had experience using Color with high end cards? Will they make a significant difference to the performance of the app? Thanks

I've got a G5 with an nvidia Quadro4500FX (too many $$$$'s) and MacPro with an ATI X1900XT. Not much difference between the two, really other than one cost about 4x what the other one did.
ATI seems to be slightly better optimized. The nvidia would generate a lot of digital sparkle here and there on edges, if there were any blanking issues.
COLOR is markedly dependent on the GPU for its colour-depth, display frame rate, and rendering speed. Some cards will throw a wrench into the UI, apparently, and you must be able to support float for full flexibility throughout the workflow, especially to the COLORFX room. There is a minimum display resolution, mostly with respect to the UI, which is locked in its layout and point/font graphics.

Help with working with color and profiles

Like many others, I suspect, I am having trouble managing the colors on my iMac to match the prints I get. I have a few questions, but first, some background:
1. Screen calibrated with Huey Pantone. Calibration was done with monitor brightness all the way to lowest. I don't use Shades or anything else. I have my Display Profile set to this profile. I'd be happy to post my .icc profile if I knew how. I can email it to anyone who can help here.
2. I have been sending my prints to Costco with the option of turning OFF their Auto Correct. To try to get things to match, I downloaded Costco's printer profiles from http://www.drycreekphoto.com/icc/Profiles/Minnesota_profiles.htm#MN (Eden Prairie, Glossy and Lustre paper profiles).
3. I shoot photos with a Canon XTi with color space set to sRGB. I am using iPhoto 08.
So here are my questions:
1. I loaded the Costco printer profile icc files into /Library/ColorSync/Profiles/Displays. When I open ColorSync, I see them under Profiles/Displays. However, in ColorSync/Devices/Displays/iMac, when I go to change the profile, I navigate to these files but the computer just beeps and won't take them. I thought all icc files could be used by monitors and printers - can these Costco iccs only be used for printers (I noticed the Costco files are 4MB, the other display iccs are 4KB)?
2. How does iPhoto handle color spaces? I import my photos off my CF card. Under iPhoto / Prefs / Advanced, I have both Copy Items and Embed ColorSync Profiles checked. Which color profile is it embedding? The one from the camera (some generic sRGB) or the one my display is using (the Huey)?
3. As a test, I exported my photo as a full size TIFF (a 3.3MB jpeg became a 28MB tiff). I opened the TIFF in Preview. Preview / Tools / Assign Profile came up as "Camera RGB Profile" (so I think this answers question 2 but I'm not sure). While in Preview, if I now change the Display Profile (from Huey to Adobe RGB), the whole screen changes, including the photo I'm looking at in Preview - shouldn't Preview hold the photo the same since it's using a different color profile?
4. I set the Display Profile back to Huey. In Preview, I go back to my photo and under Tools / Assign Profile I assign the profile my Huey profile (instead of Camera RGB). I save this as a jpeg and reimport into iPhoto. When I compare these two photos side by side in iPhoto, they look indistinguishable. Why, if on the original import iPhoto embedded the Camera RGB profile into the photo and I make a copy assigning the Huey profile do they look identical? There's no reason to assume that the Camera RGB and Huey profiles are the same! Or is it some trick where the Display Profile is overriding everything?
5. Lastly, I reopened the original TIFF export in Preview and assigned it the Costco profile (happened to use the glossy one). Lo and behold, what appears on the screen is a much closer version to what I got back as a print. Finally, as one last tweak, I changed my Display Profile from Huey to Adobe RGB and the picture I saw in Preview was closer still to what I got back from Costco. I changed the Display back to Huey, kept the Costco profile assigned and saved my TIFF back to a JPEG. I imported into iPhoto and compared - it looks much closer to my Costco print.
So I'm utterly confused. How do professionals manage their color workflow? Is my Huey calibration whacky? Why, if I assign a color profile to something in Preview, does it really depend on what Display Profile I have set (I thought profiles managed color, but it looks like it's relative).

The contractual requirements between the vendor and your company may be the key. The contract may or may not discuss whether the vendor's permission to modify the material includes an obligation to make the documents usable. "Usable" may be construed to mean providing original files. If the vendor is required to provide originals, they may or may not be required to provide them in a common format, like MS Word, rather than the proprietary FrameMaker format they use. Their providing a PDF may completely satisfy their obligation; your lawyers may be helpful here.

Odd Issue Editing in Photoshop with color and lens corrections

First off, I'm on LR 4.4 and PS CS6 (Camera Raw 7.4.0.137) using ProPhoto RGB as my LR colorspace and have my PS color settings as Working Space: ProPhoto RGB and my color management policies to preserve embedded profiles.
When I right click on a DNG in LR and choose "Edit in Photoshop", LR sends it to PS and PS does its "Reading in Camera Raw Format" and opens the image. However, the colors are off (very muted) and any lens corrections I've applied in LR are missing. My monitor (iMac on OSX 10.8) is calibrated with a Spyder. I've also noticed that if I choose to edit in another application, it renders the tiff fine and the color and lens corrections are correct in the tiff.
Anyone have any ideas what my issue is?

ETA: After some experimenting, it seems that the "Adobe Standard" profile is what gets sent to Photoshop. The rest (Camera Landscape, Portrait, etc.) are ignored. What's going on here?

Sounds like you need to reset your warning dialog. Preferences>General>Prompts [Reset all warning dialogs]
Then try it again and make certain of the three choices you are Editing a Copy with Lightroom Adjustments.

We have two 5D Cyborg Online Systems, 3d Workstations with xsi,
and an Mediacomposer.
So last Year we started to do onlinening on Set for digital shooted
highspeed tv commercials (With the Weinberger Sppedcam).
We do this with on of our mobile 5D Cyborgs Systems.
Which i think, is one of the best Online systems still on the Highend market.
But Colorcorrection is more and more Important specially with digital shooted footage.
So the ColorCorrection tools in the Cyborg a pretty nice.
But I wanted a portable Colorcorrection Tool/system for deficile Corrections.
So i heard about Silicon Color.
So now I´ve bouht FCS 2, and i already had a AJA Io La Box.
Color don´t give me a Videoout over this to my Sony Class A.
So how ist the Quality from the MXO on a Apple Cinema , like a Sony BVM Class A ? is it a reference Picture ?
Second Question
How is the Workflow, because with a mac book pro, a calldigit raid and color, you need a secondary displa for the scopes and the workpicture ( masking etc).
Is the Presenationmodus from the MXO in the same Quality of the Mastering Mode.
And is it ease and fast to switch between them.

"How to use an Appplicom card with Labview and a Seimens PLC"

Hi, I am using an applicom card type PCI1500-PFB to communicate with a Seimens S7-300 CPU315-2DP plc. I am using this simply to display in a labview front panel the outputs of the plc and may in the future use switches on the front panel to control the inputs of the plc. How do I do the communication? I have setup the applicam card and have comms with the plc I think. I am trying to use data socket to communicate to the plc via the applicom card. Any suggestions?

There�s a fair bit of documentation on NI�s site regarding the Applicom card.
The following doc does a pretty good job summarizing Applicom's PCCONF and PCINIT, and the use of ReadWait and WriteWait to ensure you�ve got communication with the between the PLC and the Applicom card:

Since it doesn�t sound like you�re using the LV DSC module, you can stop reading once it gets into connecting to Lookout Objects.
Once you�re sure you�ve got comm, you can do some quick tests in LabVIEW using front panel datasocket connections as shown on page 11-12 of the following:

the complexity of your system. If simple, you could just stay with front panel connections, or you could move to programming with the Datasocket Read and Write functions.

Problem with colors and bits

So I have this problem, I made a drawing with my tablet in 32bit color in photoshop and I want to save it as a TIFF file, but when I save it the image that is the tiff file is black and white and the cuality is not good.I think there is some kind of problem with the RGB color.If someone can tell me how to fix this ?
Also when I try to change the image to 16 or 8 bit(so I can save it as a JPEG file), it looses all its effect like details made with brush with low opacity.I really hope someone can help me out

Just to be clear, 32 bit color (when used with an RGB image) is 32 bits each for red, green, and blue = 96 bits / pixel.
The use of images carrying 32 bit color is uncommon, and this format is used primarily in editing to deal with High Dynamic Range imagery. I suspect whatever tool you're using to view the TIFF you saved with 32 bit color is unable to deal with the format, which is why you're seeing it looking poorly and in black and white.
Your instinct is correct to reduce the bit depth to save in a more common format.
However, you should not be seeing a visible degradation when reducing the bit depth to 16 bits / channel. That's still a very accurate format. How are you "changing the image to 16 or 8 bit", specifically?

Fill outline fonts with color and keep it vector

Is there a way to fill the inside of a type that is an outline without rasterizing the font and using the paint bucket?
The reason I need to keep it vector is because the finished graphic will be sized from 50 to 300 dpi and the edges will soften when scaled. Below is an example of the font style with two treatments. For the red fill I rasterized the font, then used paint bucket. The other with the green behind is to show the inside transparency of the font.

I guess the op meant upping the resolution of the document? The poster didn't say why they can't start with a document 300
and maybe it would be better to fill the areas after upping the resolution.
Anyway, this is a 680x480 document at 72 resolution and i did use the magic wand for the intial selection, then used quick mask to fix a few spots, contracted the selected 1px
and then made the work path using a tolerance of 0.5. (400% view)

Two boolean buttons with colors and text?

I need two boolean buttons which will represent a power switch. So one will be ON and one will be OFF, but I need the text to be right on the button and I also want the buttons to switch colors. I have found only one or the other property (text on button or color) but not both on the pallette. Am I just not looking at the right buttons/properties? Please recommend what I should be using. (i.e. when ON is depressed I want it to be green, and OFF to be grey and viceversa)

Programatically, there are two attribute nodes, one of them is strings, which will accept an array of 4 strings, being the following:
1-OFF state
2-ON state
3-ON to OFF state (when latched or switched until release)
4-OFF to ON state (when latched or switched until release)
The other attribute is Colors, which is composed of an array of clusters of two numeric or color constants(controls):
1-OFF sate foreground and background
2-ON state foreground and background
3-ON to OFF state foreground and background (when latched or switched until release)
4-OFF to ON state foreground and background (when latched or switched until release)

I'm thinking on buying a Zen, but i'm a bit confused on the issue of if is it better to buy a Zen with 4Gb or a Zen with 2Gb and a SD card with 4Gb, because the diference on the pricefrom the 2Gb to the 4Gb fits a SD card with 4Gb, and will result in a Zen with 6Gb...
Does the zen works fine with the reading times of the SD cards? Or does the performance drops when reading from the card?

Screen hungs with color mess.

I had issue with mac macbook pro mid 2010.

Then i took it to the Apple Authorized Service Provider, they help it for almost 2 months then gave it me back.
It is my working computer, and i work with 2 displays.
Everything was fine i used it with external display for about 6 months, no issues.
But after we moved to another office, i had to use it without additional display and strange things start to happen.
The screen started to freeze randomly with colors and pictures messed. I am attaching screenshot how it looks like.
But when i plug external screen and use both (macbooks integrated + external) - no issues, everuthing works just fine, unplug, and it happens again. Must be something with video card again i suppose.
I called to Service back they said it is too late to fix this for free. 6 months passed.
But this issue never happened before first repair in service, macbook used to restart. Now the screen hangs...
I though reinstalling os would help. Erased hdd, and installed new Maveric, no luck. Just the same.
What should i do?

I noticed that pictures with display anomalies are not diplaying...

3ds Max crashes using Quadro 1000M card on battery

If I run 3ds Max 2012 on the Quadro 1000M card with the power adaptor plugged in it runs fine. If I unplug the power while the program is running, or start the program under battery power the program will run for a few seconds then freeze.
Running under the Intel graphics works fine, however the purpose of having a workstation class laptop is to take advantage of the inproved graphics option.
The W520 is listed as 3ds Max "certified" by Autodesk. I have all the latest Lenovo and Windows drivers, as well as the latest BIOS installed as of 1/10/2012.
Is anyone else having issues with applications crashing while using Quadro graphics on battery power?

Since this only happens for this particular program, try reinstalling 3ds Max and when you reinstall; set your unit to diagnostic mode via msconfig before doing so.
at the same time check with the Autodesk forum, there might be other uses who has the Quadro 1000m on their system who is experiencing the same symptom or maybe a patch is available for this.

We had problems with color and the x1900 card. Ended up replacing them with the NVIDIA GE 8800. Watch out, there are different versions of the 8800 if you go down that route.
