Quality degredation when viewing Powerpoint documents?

Hello,
I'm the IT admin at a medical college. (I run the whole place via my MBP with Fusion and RDC.) The vast majority of the teaching materials are in the form of MS Powerpoint presentations. I keep hearing from our Mac users that when they open the documents with Keynote, the image quality is degraded.
If this is a known issue, is there a fix other than switching to Powerpoint? Granted, Keynote is much better, and that's not fanboy talk since I can't say the same about Pages or Numbers , but most of the students aren't creating presentations, they are just viewing and adding notes to existing MS documents. Due to the subject matter, image quality is very important.
Any thoughts?
Thanks,
-Travis

Thanks for responding Lori - yeah, for whatever reason the image quality isn't quite as crisp when we use the PDF Printer.  If that's the way the system is designed then I guess we'll have to do it that way and sacrifice some image quality, printing notes is more important, would be nice if we could print speaker notes via PDFMaker though.

When viewing a document my screen goes dim after 2-3 minuetes if I don't touch anything. I'd like it to stay lit for 10-15 minuetes if possible.

Open the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences and set it not to automatically reduce the brightness.

After purchasing the Export PDF Online software when I attempt to perform a "File/Save As" when viewing a document on the web it locks up windows explorer.  I receive "FIle Save As - Not Responding"

I think you may be correct.  It is coincidental with my upgrade to Adobe Reader 11.0.10.
    I have installed IE 11 (11.0.9600.17690)
It may be an Adobe Reader problem in that the "tools/file save as" dialog is completely empty. No local directories are displayed for saving to.   When I try to Close(X) the "File Save As" box it pops up a message box on top that says "Adobe Reader is not Responding"  It locks up all of my IE windows, not just the one with the PDF doc.
I need to go go Task Manager and stop the IE task.  All my browser windows are then closed.
That is the only way to recover from the "Adobe Reader is Not Responding" message.

  • FLV Audio Quality Drops when viewed online

I have a FLV playing in my SWF and when viewed locally in Flash or just in the Flash player by clicking the file on my desktop the file plays fine with decent quality audio.
However as soon as I upload the file to my website the audio quality seems to drop.
The difference is quite noticeable, is there any reason for this?
    Thanks

Thanks for helping, I really appreciate it.
No it just lowers in quality.  It plays fine though no stuttering.
When I play in Flash its fine but when I play over the web in sounds really tinny and poor quality.
This site is using the same FLV as mine, I know because I've downloaded it from their website and there's sounds fine, this is how mine sounds in Flash.

Now listen to the same FLV on my website. Can you hear the difference?

Like I say when I listen to this in Flash in sounds great, really good quality, as soon as I upload its sounds different.
    Thanks

  • Photo quality worse when viewed on a PC -- why?

I'm experiencing a strange issue with some photos that I've touched up in iPhoto. When viewing the photos in iPhoto, they look fine. When exported into a different folder and viewed in Preview, they look fine. But later on I tried opening up the same exported files (jpeg's) on a PC, and some of them looked horrible. Some were horrendously noisy. Some had colors that seemed off. Some were far too sharp (I was playing around with the sharpness adjuster in iPhoto).
Has anyone experienced this issue before, and does anyone know why this happened? I plan on simply going back and toning down some of my edits/adjustments, but I'd like to know if there's an explanation for this.
One odd thing I noticed just now is that when opening some of these "bad" jpegs in Preview, for a split second, the photos look like they did on my PC. For example, I could see the pixel noise in one of them for a split second... similar to the way iPhoto first displays a blurry enlargement when double clicking on a photo. It almost seems like Preview and iPhoto are self-correcting bad images for display. Thoughts?

The primary cause of the misalignment is the fact the text is using a "Web Safe" font. A "web safe" font is not a single font. Rather it's a list/stack of fonts for the site visitor's browser to try until it finds one that's available the visitor's computer. That means on one computer the text is in one font (i.e. Arial) and on another computer it's another (i.e. Helvetica) with the subsequent fallout caused by the varying character widths between the two fonts. The best way to reduce this variation between site viewers is to use a Web Font (either an Edge Web Font or a Self-Hosted Web Font).
The alignment still won't be entirely consistent across browsers (or even versions of browsers), because each browser has it's own text layout engine and the engines do sometime change, but the variation will be radically reduced.

  • No sound when viewing powerpoint show

I have received an powerpoint show which contains sound. But there's no sound when I view it in Keynote.
I have tried opening it on my work pc, a windows/office2003 combination, and music pours out of the speakers.
I have searched for others with this problem, but the latest post is almost two years old. So was this ever fixed or do I need to do something?
I have already upgraded to the latest 9.0.3 iWork release.

    FYI
The ppt/pps with problems are the ones where the sound file is .wav
For reasons beyond my understanding, Keynote does not support this basic sound format. Comon Apple, this format has been there ever since I remember. I even had a sampler on my C64, which handled this format.
    What gives?
Temporary solution was to install OpenOffice 3.1 on my mom's imac. We both remain clueless as to why we paid for the apple office suite, and then have to install an open source variant to handle ppt's with .wav sound files.
How is a macaficionado/fanboy to explain this to a mac-convert?

  • Slight Color and Quality Shift when viewing RAW files for first time in Library Module.

    Hello,
I have been shooting RAW for a while and have notice that after I import the images and then start to view them in the Library Module I will see a slight color and quality shift - almost looks like a white balance shift but not quite.   I was thinking that perhaps there was some automatic preset being applied but I don't have any presets at all.
I am shooting with a Canon 1DX as well as 7D.  I have not checked to see if I get this situation with the 7D, but I know for sure that I get it with the 1DX.
Today I was reviewing some images in Bridge and decided to open one of them in Camera RAW.   At that time I discovered that the camera's Image Style Settings were available, Faithful, Standard, Portrait, etc.  I noticed that the images did not have one of the camera styles applied to them but rather the Adobe Standard Style. At that point from within RAW I selected one of the camera's styles and bingo thats the kind of shift I am seeing when I first view an image in LR4 Library.
So as far as I can tell the RAW images are getting the Adobe Standard style applied in LR.   I have no idea if this is a default behavior of if I have done something to cause it.  I'm also thinking that perhaps LR does not necessarily apply the Camera's Styles automatically even though the particular style has been set in the camera -- perhaps is not imported as part of the metadata during the import and thus defaults to the Adobe Standard.
I guess what I need to know is a few things and I hope someone can educate this newbie!
    1. Should I expect LR4 to apply the Style as set from the camera automatically or not at all?
    2. Can I prevent LR from applying the Adobe Standard Style and apply no style?
    3. Can I cause LR to apply the Style as set in the camera for the particular image to be appied automatically upon import?
Thank you for any guidenace you can offer.  Of course if you need additional information or clarification please let me know.
    Scott

That sort of describes it and may be exactly what is happening.  I have a shoot tonight and will pay closer attention to the process and behavior when I import.
It is the full image that I see the shift on though.  Its not that the thumbnail and the full size image look different.  It the full size image looking one way and then shifting in front of my eyes.
What is frustrating is that I typically find that the image before the shift is better than what appears after the shift, so I find myself always chasing to get back to where it was and because its gone I'm chasing an invisible ideal, so to speak.   Ahhh...isnt that the life of a photographer though!
It seems like its the last step in the render process -- if I could just figure out what it is and stop it I could finally figure out if I really care or not.  Its just so quick its tough to tell if indeed the first appearance is better.
I'll feedback some more information when I get a better handle on this.
    Thanks for the reference.

  • Poor quality video when viewing on canvas - screens captured by Camtasia

I'm creating avi files of Excel screen shots and activities on a PC with Camtasia, moving them to FCP5, and converting them to QuickTime movies. I've tried lots of settings at both ends of the process. The clips look great if played on QT pl;ayer or other players and not bad when played in the FCP viewer. They lose a lot of resolution when I move them to the timeline, render them, and view on the canvas. Any idea what settings I should use to get these clips looking really good? Thanks very much.
    Ernie Horan

They lose a lot of resolution...
    they have to ...
iMovie is for video editing, delivery is in NTSC/PAL, so max. supported res is 720x480...
video means also: iMovie uses internally "dv" as videocodec (as on miniDV tapes...)… what codec is inside the .avi you're producing on your PC? .. as you probably know, avi (in the Apple world: mov) is just a container, some say "wrapper".. can contain many formats&codecs, which look good in playback, but lose quality when processed in iM.. as said: stay with dv...
if camtasia doesn't support dv, try a less compressing codec (mpeg4?)... try to come close to the video specs as possible...
    last word about quality:
"video" means also, your Mac can only "emulate" the final pic quality, video has 30fps, is interlaced etc.... playout to tape/create dvd/use iM's live-playout feature to judge delivery quality....

  • Why is the photo quality poor when view on TV?

Before I burn a slideshow on a dvd I check to see the quality of my images and they look perfect on my mac however, the quality is greatly reduced when I watch a photo slideshow on a TV. This has occurred for one than 1 tv also (all pretty new).
Any suggestions as to why this is happening?
    Thanks.

Are you using high resolution images? If so, try lowering the resolution. Or try an app that specializes in iDvd slideshows.

  • Quality Issue when viewing in PrE 11 Editor

Hi. I have looked at other threads but am confused.  I have imported some video clips into the PrE 11 Editor. When I play them through the Editor they are fuzzy/pixellated. When I play them though the Organiser the quality is much better.  What is the reason for this?  Is it something I have done?
The video was taken with a Canon Legria FS22 camera. Image is SD quality not HD.  It was imported as DV PAL 25 frames per second.  Frame size 720x576.   The manual says the camera is using MPEG-2 compression.
The PC has 64bit with 8.00G RAM. Operating system is Windows 7 Professional incl SP1.  Chip is Intel-R i5 -3330  operating at 3GHz.
The videos were imported using get Media with the Videos from FLIP or Camera Option

I converted by digital photos with iTunes (the very newest version- 6.0.?) and synched them to my 30 GB 5G iPod. The pictures look great on the iPod, but extremely poor (colors are off and very blurry) on the TV (connected properly with an iPod AV cable.) Am I expecting too much, or am I missing something?

  • Is it possible to ignore the cover page of a document when viewing two pages at a time.

when viewing a document with two pages up at a time, I want to ignore the very first page/cover page in the document so that all subsequent pages line up correctly. I can't find how to do this, is it possible. I cannot extract or delete the first page b/c the document is protected. I don't want to modify the document in any way. This document is a catalog that has information spread across two pages. So, when the cover page is included in the two page scroll viewing option, all the corresponding pages are offset by one page. I want the cover page to be at the top, by itself and the rest of the pages to show side by side.

  • Signature panel 'hangs' when viewing a signed document

Hello and Merry Christmas to everyone,
I am facing a problem when viewing a document ( https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1wk9toh5e7AekxUcGM0RVc4Z2c/edit?usp=sharing ) with Adobe Reader. The signature panel appears to be frozen (not initialized), and it is not possible to access any signature details at all.
Note that the document contains two invisible signatures. Whenever I remove the second signature manually by truncating the document, the signature panel is shown as expected.
My environment: Windows 8.1 x64, Adobe Reader 11.0.5. Interestingly enough, the document and the signatures are shown correctly by Adobe Reader 9. I am attaching a screen shot of what I am seeing with Adobe Reader 11 below.
It would be great if someone lets me know why this is happening and whether Adobe are going to fix this.
    Thanks in advance,
    Innokentiy Ivanov

A quick update following my own investigation of the issue. Apparently, the problem is somehow related to annotation objects on the first and only page. Whenever I remove the /Annots entry from the page object (e.g. by renaming it to AnnotX to preserve the overall document structure), both signatures are rendered correctly. I've uploaded the updated document here ( https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1wk9toh5e7AYllGbkJwZmZvR1E/edit?usp=sharing ).

  • Embedded files 'disappear' when viewing signed version of a document

    Hello,
We've just come across a weird issue when viewing signed documents containing embedded files in Adobe Reader. If we use the 'Click to view this version' link in the Signatures panel, the embedded files are not shown in the Attachments panel, even though they are covered by the signature.
I've uploaded a sample document that illustrates the issue to Google Drive, here is the link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B1wk9toh5e7AZVBIb2V6a2lDMWM/view?usp=sharing
    Thanks,
    Ken

"View this version" comes with a disclaimer in the top bar that most functions are disabled in this view. If attachments are shown in the "Attachments" panel, then they can be opened
(otherwise what's the point to show them at all), and Acrobat uses a default app for this MIME type (i.e. Notepad for .txt files) to open it and has no control what the user could do there. User could definitely copy this file to a different location and this is akin to copying some of he PDF's content which is a prohibited operation in this view.
You can treat the disclaimer in the top bar as the Adobe official statement along with my read on what it means with respect to annotations.
IMO to "View this version" for the last signature when there are no changes after the file was signed is meaningless because both versions are identical. It is only when some changes were made after a signature that you may want/need to view the signed version.

  • Trouble with the image quality when viewing under 100%. First time posting on the forum.

Hello everyone. I am sorry we have the get acquainted this way but I am having some issues and this is one of my last options of getting help.   Allow me to explain the problem.    When viewing a file under 100% zoom, everything looks jagged like the anti aliasing is missing.  Once I zoom in to 100%, everything looks the way it should. The saved file ( jpeg format for instance) is okay. I can zoom out and it still looks true to the image. The problem is related to photoshop. I installed my latest GPU drivers twice just to be sure and it was not from that.   This problem started last night and I don`t quite know how to solve it.  If I work on small resolution images, it isn`t such a bad problem because I will be working on 100% zoom, but I am working on high resolution images/ paintings. Somewhere around 8000x5000 pixels thus, working at 100% is not that doable. I attached an image that shows this issue. The one on the right is the zoomed out version and the one on the left is the zoomed in version.  Yes, the noise is affected by this, badly, but this started last night. up until then everything looked good even with noise or an out of this world sharpness. I can`t imagine what I could have done to trigger this.
This being said, I am at the mercy of the more knowledgeable folks from around here. I do hope I posted this question in the right section. This is my first post here so sorry if I messed something up.   Looking forward to your replies.

Here is a simplistic view that I feel may help you understand reality.
The only time you're looking at your image pixels in Photoshop is when you're zoomed in to 100%,   There your look at the actual image pixels Photoshop has for your image at your displays resolution.
At any other zoom level you are looking a scaled image that  has more or less pixels than your actual image these too are displayed at your display resolution.
The scaling done by Photoshop is done for displaying your image is done for good performance not for the best image quality a quick interpolation.   Therefore at some zoom levels image quality looks poorer  than at other zoom levels.
High resolution Display have now add a new wrinkle.   User interfaces were designed for displays  with resolutions around 100 PPI elements like text, icon, and other things like checkboxes, buttons etc. were created so there size would be useable are this more or less fixed 100 PPI resolution.   While Photoshop was designed to scale your images so you can work well on it is was not designed with a scalable UI.  Photoshop can not scale its user interface independently from its image display display window for you displays high resolution.  Photoshop's Image display area has the same resolution as the rest of Photoshop User Interface.  Just like there is only one resolution in all layers in a document. CC 2014 2xUI changes that.  PS UI is scaled to 1/2 resolution the image Area is at the displays actual resolution.
Photoshop CC 2014 2x UI scales all of Photoshop User Interface including the image display to 200% which is 1/2 your display resolution effectively cutting you display pixel count to 1/4 its actual pixel count.   Your once again running on a low resolution display.     If your display has a native resolution  200 PPI you're running it at 100 ppi if your display has a 300 PPI resolution  you're running it at 150ppi.    Which defeats the reason of having high resolution.  Which is you would like to be able to edit your images at print resolution.  Adobe cc2x UI scales the UI but not the image window soa inage is 216ppi on the Surface Pro 3 the UI is large and dpoes not fit. screen
To be able to edit your images at print resolution  you need a display the has a print resolution and you need and application the can scale its image display  and its UI independently.
Current there is no OS interface for having multiple resolutions areas on  a display  and applications like Photoshop can not scale UI and Image independently.  OS and Photoshop can scale what is displayed.  Adobe Photoshop executable is coded in a way that it tell Microsoft Windows OS that it will handle display scaling so it can using your displays native resolution.  Currently Only  Photoshop CC 2014  Provides you with the option of running you display at half resolution.
Windows can scale you display to many resolution and as several presets.  like 100%, 125%, 150% and like Adobe 200% half resolution.    You can make a Windows Registry and add an External Photoshop  Manifest file the tell's Microsoft Windows to handle display scaling.  I have a  Microsoft Surface Pro 3 m windows machine. Its LCD has a 216PPI resolution.  Windows 8.1 had 4 preset for scaling its LCD.
Surface Pro 3 LCD Display 12"  IPS display 3:2 aspect ratio 9.984603532054124" Wide, 6.656402354702749" High 216.3330765278394  PPI
    Microsoft Preset Display scaling
    100% 2160x1440   216 PPI
    125% 1728x1152   173 PPI
    150% 1440x960    144 PPI SP3 Default setting
    200% 1080x720    108 PPI
Most user these days has 1024x768 or better displays and Web pages are often authored for 800x600 pixels pages. So the give you a better handle on Resolution and scaling I have edit a 800x600 document with 25x25 px grid one my Surface pro 3
using Windows 4  scaling presets and captured the 2160x1140 scaled screens  Only at the 100% preset does the image window have a 216ppi Also note  @ 2x UI Photoshop UI doe not fit on screen
Adobe Photoshop  CC 2014 2xUI Scales the UI  to a display 1/2 resolution but does not scale the Image area  uses actual screen resolution. Photoshop  Help system info show the screen i 1/2 resilution 1080x720 but scalet the imase to the real resolution 2160x1440. however the image window is the 216ppi the ui 108ppi via scaling
