Quality differences between "Export Using Compressor..." and Drag & Drop

There are quite a few people out there discussing the 24p workflow for the new Canon HV20 (on hv20.com, dvinfo.net, etc.). The HV20 can shoot 24 progressive frames/sec, but stores them as 29.97 interlaced HDV on tape, with an arbitrary cadence.
One of the better workflows is to capture into FCP using HDV over Firewire, and use Compressor to extract the progressive frames from the interlaced. Its Reverse Telecine seems to automatically figure out the cadence. I've been testing this using the "Other Workflows > Apple Codecs > Apple ProRes 422 for Progressive material (HQ)" preset, with the following modifications, Frame Controls: On, Deinterlace: Reverse Telecine, Frame Size: 1920x1080.
That's just background.
The problem is this. If I export the HDV clip from FCP, "Export > Using Compressor...", the resulting 24p footage is extremely high quality. However, if I drag & drop the HDV clip directly into Compressor, or set up a Compressor droplet (arguably more straightforward for batch conversions), the resulting footage has obvious resizing artifacts (jaggies).
Obviously, I'm keeping everything consistent setting-wise, and have thoroughly examined the resulting .movs. The only difference is the actual image quality.
Anyone seen anything like this?
I'm less concerned about this specific workflow than I am about Compressor producing non-identical results from identical footage with the same settings, dependent on your chosen workflow...

What I need to know if it is a dramatic different in quality that I should use DVD Pro instead of iDVD.
If you want a DRAMATIC improvement in quality, shoot sharp, high quality content like Hollywood (usually on film) and have it compressed by high quality hardware encoders.
There is a good reason Hollywood DVDs look better than iDVD/DVD Studio Pro DVDs.

  • Quality difference between exporting via Export vs. Export using Quicktime

In iMovie 08, is there a difference in quality between Exporting a movie at the largest available size via the "Export" menu item, versus using "Export using Quicktime"?
I have a very long movie of family movies (9 hours) and have been unable to do a straight export (gets to the end after 25 hours or so and gives me a non-descript "can't complete" error message), but would rather split it up into several smaller files than compromise on quality, if there is such a compromise using the Quicktime function.
If I do go the Quicktime route, what settings should I choose, or just the default. Also, Export using Quicktime option makes a .mov file. What file type does the straight "Export" function create?
    thanks much!

What file type does the straight "Export" function create?
All presets are compressed as H.264/AAC content.
Also, Export using Quicktime option makes a .mov file.
The MOV file container is "generic" and may contain any form of compressed data compatible with the QT components installed on your system and which the accessing application will allow you to use. In the case of iMovie '08, proprietary and third-party components are not allowed even if installed.
If I do go the Quicktime route, what settings should I choose, or just the default.
You use the audio and video codec and settings best suited to the goals of your export. Since you have not mentioned what your are trying to do with your exported content, it is impossible to make any recommendations here.

A 9 hour export at the largest (960x540) dimensions implies a 4.128 Mbps data rate which equates to a file on the order of about 16 GBs in size. As you did not mention which export/sharing option you were using or if everything was being done on a single hard drive, such an export may require a total of 48-64 GBs of available storage space for temporary, Media Browser, and target/duplicate file(s) plus free memory for rendering purposes. So one of your potential problems could be file space availability.
As a general rule, increases in the duration of your target movie may require geometric increases in either available file space or the time it takes to perform the processing. It is, therefore, usually better to "chunk" your projects (break them into smaller, more manageable segments than to process them as a single project/file) and process the segments independently. In addition most people will not watch a 9-hour movie in one sitting in any case. (I have gone as high as 5 hours but even the product of this effort amounted to less than 4 GBs of file space.)
To "chunk" an iMovie '08 project, simply duplicate your completed project as many times as needed and then divide each into manageable segments and deleting segments so as to remove the duplicated segments. I would likely consider 6 segments targeted at about 90 minutes each but division of content anywhere between 60 and 120 minutes would probably be considered "manageable" for most purposes.

There should be no difference in quality if you use the same compression formats and target settings. Changing either the compression format (each of which may have its own particular characteristics) or the settings (such as the data rate which directly affects both file size and quality) will usually produce visual differences in your product.

  • Difference between Export as Quicktime and Export as Quicktime Conversion

If the desired end result is a Quicktime file, compressed with the default h.264 "for broadband" preset, should there be any difference between:
    1) exporting a sequence with "Export as Quicktime", then opening up that file in Quicktime Pro and compressing it with the preset.
    or
    2) exporting the sequence with "Export as Quicktime conversion" with the preset.
I had expected these to be equivalent, but I've found that method #2 gives me dramatically sharper text in titles. Can anyone explain why? I'm using FCE 4.

Well I reckon it's because you are crunching numbers twice, in #2 it's once.
Despite digital transfers being said to Lossless, I call it Lessloss.

  • Difference between Export QT and Export Using QT Conversion?

I am exporting video from FCE4 into iDVD, and can't understand the difference between Export QuickTime Movie and Export Using QuickTime Conversion.
The first is much faster, but the video seems to suffer in quality. Am I missing something?
    Thanks!

"Export Using QuickTime Conversion" gives you many more options
(and many more ways of making mistakes); and it always recompresses.
Using "Export QuickTime Movie" gives you the option to uncheck
the "Recompress" box, which should produce a better result,
    if you're not changing codecs.

  • Audio Sync when Exporting Using Compressor

    Hello!
Having an odd situation. Project in FCP 4.5 the audio is sync'd just fine in FCP export using Compressor and the audio is delayed about 5 seconds...so the video footage starts and about 5 seconds later the audio starts. Now, in the same project I have other footage and exported the same exact way without issues - I have no idea why this particular footage would be an issue! Because Compressor is exporting these files with the audio and video as separate files I am seeing this issue when the file is in DVD Studio Pro - but again none of the other files that are being placed on this DVD are having audio alignment issues...so this is not making sense.
I am not 'new' at this but I am no expert either - my main gig is audio - so I could really use some help.
Any suggestions? I am not sure what other information someone would need to help so ask away.
    Thanks in advance!

Well I REALLY need some help with this one! I have tried so many different 'work arounds' without success. As mentioned in my first post the audio is not sync'ing with the video when exported. I have tried Exporting the file in QuickTime, I have tried using Compressor again exporting just the video then the audio - pulling it into a new session and lining it up again but everytime I pull it the newly exported file into a new project and render it FCP crashes not allowing it to render (nice!). I actually started from square one capturing the video footage again and assemble the project again without luck. I simply cannot believe what a pain in the arse this is!! I need to get this project done and it simply won't do it.

  • Print quality difference between iphoto and aperture...?

when ordering books, is there a print quality difference between using iPhoto and Aperture? or are they sent to the same lab?
it's possible i may have some setting wrong, but when i order a book using iphoto, i never really feel the quality is that great. it's good, i just feel it could be a lot better. the print quality sort of reminds me of newsprint, albeit high quality newsprint. similar sized prints made at home on my basic 3-in-1 printer look better.
    thanks...

Previews are what you view on your display. When you import a photo into Aperture (and I'm pretty sure iPhoto as well), your computer automatically generates a preview for quick viewing. The original images are stored in your library, but it is the preview that you see.
In Aperture, you are able to set the size and quality of these previews. When sharing photos between Aperture and iPhoto, the process is as follows:
Let's say that your images are stored in Aperture, but you also want to be able to view them in iPhoto without taking up too much room on your hard drive. Essentially, if you were to import the originals into iPhoto as well, you would be storing two exact, yet separate copies of the same image on your hard drive. As you are aware, with large images (whether JPEG's, and especially RAW) this would put quite a tax on your storage capacity after not too long.
So, you have your images in one or the other (in this case Aperture), but you want to play around with them in iPhoto. What you can do, is open iPhoto, go to the File menu and then select, Show Aperture Library. This will open a window with all of the contents of your Aperture Library. You can then drag any images you want into iPhoto . The only thing is, you are not dragging the original JPEG's, but rather, the previews of those images. If you have those previews set to a lower quality (again for capacity concerns), you will only have lower quality and lower detailed images in iPhoto. These images might not be ideal, or even suitable for printing high quality prints. The previews that you generate in Aperture though can be adjusted to be extremely high quality with no size limits.
My thinking was that since you mentioned Aperture, it sounded like you had experience with working with it and with ordering a photo book through Aperture. I guess you were saying that you ordered via iPhoto, weren't happy with the quality and were wondering if Aperture created books were better.
Anyway, if this is the case, I cannot answer that for you. I have never ordered a book through Aperture. If the quality of your images is good, you should be able to get a decent product no matter where you order it from. There is not doubt that the materials used and the print shop that does the work makes a difference, but if your images are good, you should still get a decent product through iPhoto. Perhaps iPhoto isn't the way to go though if you have had poor experiences with them.
If you haven't used Aperture yet, I would highly recommend it though aside from the photo book aspect of this thread. It is a stellar product.
    I hope this helps.

  • Exporting using Compressor failed, and other awekward issues with FCP

Hi FCP gurus! I need your help!
Everytime I try to export using compressor, my submission fails.
I even try a sequence a exported as m2v on Monday, but today is not working.
Compressor will some times say "Unable to view preview, FCP is busy". When I press submit, it goes to Batch Processor but it either will immediately show FAILED or it will just not do any processing. When I quit and restart, then the submission appears as failed.
Also when exporting, FCP comes back with a pop message saying that 4 files went offline. When I try to reconnect them it says: "There are not clips selected that have files associated with them". So, why is FCP constantly not able to fine this files, if they are not been used?
I need to export a file for my soundtrack guy, and he needs MOV, preferable DV-PAL or Motion-JPEG or similar frame-based codecs. What are my options?
In any case, what the problem here is that I CANNOT export anything. What shall I do? I already restarted the computer twice, nothing.
I realized that I have files using in this project, saved in two different external harddrives, do you think this has anything to do with the issue?
    I am using FCP 5.1.4
    Thanks so much in advance!

First off, fwiw, I never "send to compressor."  I export a self-contained QT movie, not a conversion.  Then I run that through compressor with the appropriate settings.  I like the self contained file, it becomes a master from which I can make all sorts of variations.  The only difference, in theory between self contained and reference, is that if for any reason you lose the render files the reference movie will not work.
    Q1 No.
    Q2 see above
Q3  There is no such thing as uncompressed.  It's just a different codec rather than a perfect copy of your timeline.
Q4 lots of reasons for making a conversion, but none of them are valid for making DVD's
Q5  Nothing wrong with letting DVDSP make the encoding-- just be sure to get into the preferences for DVDSP and set the destinations to a folder for the project, so you don't overwrite any other projects.  Depending on how long the project is, you can let it encode in the bg while you set up your project, build the buttons etc.  It's all the same encoding engine, whether is is done in compressor or dvdsp.   I find it much faster to use compressor then to take to dvdsp becaue you can use quickcluster.
Now a couple of questions for you:  what sort of footage are you using and what are your fcp sequence settings?

  • Difference between Export and Adobe PDF presets..?

    Hi,
It is possible to export a PDF from InDesign (CS3) using both the Export menu and the Adobe PDF Presets menu (both are sub-menus under File)
Technically they seem to do exactly the same thing, both allow you to use predefined presets to export your PDF.
What I am wondering is, are there any differences between the two? And if so, what are they?
Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

PDF Presets are what they are Presets. You may get a joboptions file from someone to use and use the PDF Presets to load the joboptions (pdf options) file into the Presets.
Then they become available in the Export Options.
Alternatively you can go into the PDF Presets and then choose to Save one of your presets to file, then email that or give the file to someone else to load onto their computer in their version of InDesign.
This way you can both have the same PDF export options.
But the presets are just a way to create, save, load and edit profiles that are available when you go to Export to PDF.

  • Difference between "Export" and "Export form Fact Table" package

    Hi experts!
Could you tell me what is the difference between "Export" and "Export form Fact Table" package?
    Tkanks
    Gabriel

    Hi,
Basic difference between Export and Export from Fact Table is
In standard package "Export" : We can perform this function when we are online and we have adequate amount of data to be exported. We can run this package eg: weekly or monthly. Here we use u201CExport Packageu201D to pull the data
And in the administrative package "Export from Fact Table"   Mostly it is used to do the backend data loading  basically bulk data , also any formula logic has to be implemented on the data in that case we use the administrative package.
    Hope this helps.

  • HT3696 How to know if your mac is using the latest Haswell architecture processor or not? and how to know the difference between the new imac and the 2012/13 imac?

How to know if your mac is using the latest Haswell architecture processor or not? and how to know the difference between the new imac and the 2012/13 imac?

Sorry to reopen an old post, but I've just purchased a 2nd hand late-2013 iMac (or so thats what the seller said).
I'm always sceptical though, and just wanted to know if there is a way to check if my iMac is indeed the late-2013 model that included Haswell?
I've attached screenshots of the About This Mac section hoping it may help shed some light.
Thank you in advance for your help!
PS - I can't compare to the iMac specs link you posted above because its now showing the late-2014 models.

  • What is the difference between saving to "Documents" and "Macintosh HD" and when should you use each one?*

What is the difference between saving to "Documents" and "Macintosh HD" and when should you use each one?

When you save to the folder with the little house icon, the file is placed at
    /Users/your_user_name/
You would really have to go out of my way to save at:
(the shortcut for the Boot Drive, regardless of its name).
I am not sure how you decided that Time Machine is not saving your files. The default is for Time Machine to do incremental Backups of everything on all attached drives, except for certain temporary information in Cache files. If you have four Users, Time Machine will back them all up.
Looking at the raw Time Machine backups will tell you very little, because it does lots of its work with Hard Links, and because it does incremental backups, so only files that changed since the last Backup are saved at thet cycle. The way to determine whether Time Machine is saving things is to display the window you care about in the Finder, then invoke the "Star wars"/ "Back, back, back in time" Interface.

  • Differences between Remote Client copy and Client export and Import

Basically client transport would be preferred if the network connection between the source and target system is slow.

Ive used compressor and then tried to put it in dvdsp put its not working. I am having problems with the audio or when i burn it , i cant play the dvd? any help would be appreciated

I suspect you are attempting to burn an HD DVD, which will not play on a DVD player...
But if you provide more details such as the settings you are applying in Compressor, then we would be able to provide you more accurate information.
How are you adding the files to Compressor?
In FCP, what are your footage properties (command-9) and sequence settings (command-0)

  • What's the difference between a web site and a web application?

I'm stumped trying to come up to a difference between a web site and a web application for myself. As I see it, a web site points to a specific page and a web application is more of some sort of 'portal' to content and information.
But where I'm stuck is that a web application is still viewed through a browser (is it not?) and a web site can still view content dynamically, making the line between web site and application prety gray.
For instance, does a web site using ASP.NET or AJAX (I assume ASP.NET is AJAX's proprietary sibling, if not, ignore ASP.NET AND concentrate on the AJAX), becomes a web application because it can retrieve data dynamically and asynchronously or would a website
using PHP and a CMS be more of a web application because it forms the pages on request, based on the request of the client and its content in its databse?
Or maybe I'm totally wrong here - what differenciates between a web application and a website?

This is totally personal and subjective, but I'd say that a website is defined by its content, while a webapplication is
defined by its interaction with the user. That is, a website can plausibly consist of a static content repository that's dealt out to all visitors, while a web application depends on interaction and requires programmatic user input and data processing.
For example, a news site would be a "website", but a spreadsheet or a collaborative calendar would be web "applications". The news site shows essentially the same information to all visitors, while the calendar processes individual data.
Practically, most websites with quickly changing content will also rely on a sophisticated programmatic (and/or database) backend, but at least in principle they're only defined by their output. The web application on the other hand is essentially a program that
runs remotely, and it depends fundamentally on a processing and a data storage backend.

There is no real "difference". Web site is a more anachronistic term that exists from the early days of
the internet where the notion of a dynamic application that can respond to user input was much more limited and much less common. Commercial websites started out largely as interactive brochures (with the notable exception of hotel/airline reservation sites).
Over time their functionality (and the supporting technologies) became more and more responsive and the line between an application that you install on your computer and one that exists in the cloud became more and more blurred.
If you're just looking to express yourself clearly when speaking about what you're building, I would continue to describe something that is an interactive brochure or business card as a "web site" and something that actually *does something that feels
more like an application as a web app.
The most basic distinction would be if a website has a supporting database that stores user data and modifies what the user sees based on some user specified criteria, then it's probably an app of some sort (although I would be reluctant to describe Amazon.com
as a web app, even though it has a lot of very user-specific functionality). If, on the other hand, it is mostly static .html files that link to one another, I would call that a web site.
Most often, these days, a web app will have a large portion of its functionality written in something that runs on the client (doing much of the processing in either javascript or actionscript, depending on how its implemented) and reaches back through some
http process to the server for supporting data. The user doesn't move from page to page as much and experiences whatever they're going to experience on a single "page" that creates the app experience for them.

...can i make as many iweb websites as i want? ...and as many blogs as i want? ...i have never made one before....
....although, i do have my own small business and i do have a website that i paid a guy to make and also host....(which is a waste of $$$$ in my opinion as i think i can do a better job making one myself through iweb) ....
...anyways, i know it is splitting hairs but what exactly is the diff b/w a blog and a website ....i am under the impression that a blog is just a personal newsletter sort of thing,...?

Short of trying to then reverse-engineer the objects that are in the dump file (I believe Data Pump export files contain some XML representations of DDL in addition to various binary bits, making it potentially possible to try to scan the dump file for the object definitions), I would tend to assume that the export didn't include those type definitions.
Since it looks like you're trying to set up the sample schemas, is there a reason that you wouldn't just run the sample schema setup scripts on the destination database? Why are you using Data Pump in the first place?
