Quality Issues with Video Footage

Hello all
I'm not sure if this is the correct forum to post this question
I'm having trouble with the quality of my footage on export to DVD and I'm wondering if this is due to my settings in FCP or my workflow.
The problem is that I am getting gradient separations in my footage. It looks like the Posterize effect in Adobe Photoshop.
I have 2 samples here....
http://www.arohajourney.com.au/Sample/sample%201.jpg
http://www.arohajourney.com.au/Sample/sample%202.jpg
When I start editing the problem in minimal when viewing in my output monitor but by the time I get my project to my DVD player it is very noticeable. Especially in disolves to black.
*This is my workflow*
Shoot on Sony Z1 in HDV format
Capture to FCP 5.1.4 using Decklink HD Extreme.
Connections are via the camera's component connections directly to the Decklink card via BNC
Codecs are Blackmagic DVCPRO HD 1080i50 or AIC
Edit
Render
Export via Quicktime Conversion > 10 Bit Uncompressed resized to 720 x 576 Pal 16:9
Compress for DVD via Compressor 2.3
Settings: MPEG 2 - CBR 6.2 Motion Est=Better
Import to DVD Studio Pro 4.1.2 to create DVD elements
Burn
Then I cry
Effects used in the samples are Mis Fire Vignette
*My Mac*
PowerPC G5 Dual Core 2.0
2.5 Memory
GeForce 6600LE 128mb
2 X 500Gb sata drives
Sonnets Fusion 500p external enclosure with 4 x 500gb SATAII Drives
OSX 10.4.10
I can't seem to figure this out so if anyone knows this problem or can point me in the right direction I will be very greatfull
Cheers

Hi Javabob
I've tried that, the gradient issue is still there and i get the added joy of watching pixelated titles.
I thought that maybe losing that step using the original footage to compress for DVD may work but it didn't...
thanks for your response though

  • Issue with video footage in Flash Pro 8

Hi everyone! I'm in the process of making a video reel flash
animation and I'm experiencing a problem. The animation itself
loops continuously and seamlessly, but the videos inside the
animation do not. Each video is about 17 seconds long, so once the
animation reaches the 17 second mark, the videos stop playing. Only
the first frame from each video shows up while the rest of the
    animation keeps going!
ANY thoughts or suggestions on how to get the videos
themselves to loop would be very much appreciated.
By the way, I turned the videos into a movie clip symbol in
order to get the infinite scrolling effect (refer to
    http://www.kirupa.com/developer/mx/infinite.htm).
Maybe this can't be done successfully with actual video footage?
    Thanks!
    Nicole

Get it out of the movieclip - start over its easier...
Give the component an instance name like vid and use this
code on the frame it sits on:
    var vidList : Object = new Object();
    vidList.complete = function() {
    vid.play();
    vid.addEventListener ("complete",vidList);

  • How to Fix quality issues with video in Premiere Elements?

I am uning Premiere Elements 10 on a HP computer with sufficient RAM and an i5 processor.  When I upload footage from my Canon Vixia HF r20, it looks fine using Windows media player to play it back, but after putting it into premiere elements 10 using Full HD AVCHD presets (NTSC), it appears grainly and vertival lines are pixelated.  This has not been a problem in the past when I have used the same camera and presets.  What am I doing wrong?

You don't say how you're judging the quality -- if you've output the video, if you're watching a DVD or if you're just viewing it in the Monitor.
Use Share/Computer/Windows Media WMV to ouput a WMV file. How does it look at 100% (not full screen)? Can you post this WMV to Vimeo so we can see it?

  • Quality issues with IDVD solved

    Hi All
    RE. Best looking IDVD playback.
May this help all those stuggling with quality issues with perfect looking Qtime files encoded by IDVD coming out looking crap.
Simply this: instead of exporting your media from your FCP timeline in H.264 - instead select Motion JPEG A. This is found under your setting options in your Qtime movie/settings export window.
Your files will export much, much faster than Apple's default setting of H.264, you will also get very smooth playback wihtout any jaggies or nasty artifacts. Files are a larger but, hey, it just looks great.
Let me know if this works for you - it took me ages to figure this out!
    Best regards

  • Photo Quality Issues with Pixma MG6220

I am frustrated.  The first photo printed from this printer was of poor quality.  It was very 'grainy' and 'noisey'.  I printed from the printer itself (put camera card into printer).  I then printed from Picasa, same problem, very poor quality.  It was then a couple of months before I attempted printing again.  I printed from PS Elements 11.  The quality was much improved but not what I expected from this printer.  I finally called tech support, after tweaking every setting I could find.  They essentially blamed my computer, wanted to reinstall the drivers and I need to buy new ink cartridges.  It's NOT my computer.  I'm curious as to why they think it's the drivers.  It very well could be bad cartridges.  The printer was purchased in December (six months ago).  I'm wondering why the photo software would make a difference.  I'm irritated that the people I spoke with seemed completely incurious as to what, exactlly, was wrong with the photos.  It would appear that no on else has had this issue.  The reviews for this printer were very good.  I can't imagine reviewing these images and stating that they are "excellent" as I have read from many reviews.  I'll be more than happy to attach scanned images for review (scanner works fine).  Thank you.

    Hi,
Check this for scanned images and originals for reference:
    http://flickr.com/gp/skital/Y9615F
(you can download full-res versions there as well - it's a bit hidden if you don't know flickr)
This was using Canon Glossy II photo paper and NOT Canon Ink. I was trying different replacement inks over the time and I had similar results.
I'm a little bit hesitant with spending more money on this printer, esp. that I had never have this kind of quality issues with my previous Canon printer (MP600) when using non canon inks - I had color issues but never grainess.
Well, I may try original inks again, but it breaks a deal for this printer.

  • Recurring quality issues with HP Elitebook 6930p

    Good afternoon to all forumers,
I am trying to find out if anyone besides me have the same recurring quality issues with HP Elitebook 6930p? Although these issues have all been resolved by HP. I find it very inconvenient since this is a business notebook and these issues have cause me a lot of down time and grievances. A list of my Elite book issues.
Warped LCD panel causing the latch not to work. (1 time)
Dead pixels on new LCD panel replacement (1 time).
Deteriorated touch pad rubber left button, which I don't use. (1 time)
    Keyboard not working. (2 times)
Screw holding the top sdie switch panel came off on one corner. Reason being, the screw holder cracked (1 time).
Reading lack cover on the LCD panel cracked on its own. I rarely use this. (1 time).
Notebook overheating. The cooling element not working properly. (1 time).
Defective power adapter, loose contact at adapter  (1 time). Replaced within warranty period.
I do not know whether to term this as` unlucky' or to say that today's HP business notebook has not got the `Quality' a business notebook should have. I have used other business notebook from HP, namely 2 models from the nx series but they are not as bad as the Elitebook except for the same high operating temperature issue.
Is there any course of action that I can take up with HP Malaysia? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.
    -Keith CK Loo

    Hi, Keith:
I have a 6930p and was leery about getting one, after reading this link below from the business support forum, but I only paid $499 for it brand new. I couldn't pass up a deal like that.
    http://h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-HP-ProBook-Compaq-Slate/6930p-Quality-Issues/m-p/1066713#M1505...
I heard that many of the issues you and the others that posted were improved/fixed by HP later on in production. My notebook was built in December of 2010, so it was pretty much the last of the line.
I have not experienced any problems with mine thus far, after 8 months of light use.  I have tested every component at least once. I know the latch issue was fixed on later models.

  • Intermittent issues with video output initialization

    Hi Guys,
I have received a new (i5, 15') Mac-book Pro more than 9 months ago. About 6 months ago it started having some serious intermittent issues with video output. Those issues are numerous and different every time, but all seems to lead to GPU problem. In chronological order:
1)Started showing static colors as flickering and white color as blue.
2)Blue screens in bootcamp and hangs in mac os
    3)Startup problems (fail to start)
4)Startup problems resolved with firmware patch, but video fails to initialize during startups:shows black on mac os, and distorted green during bootcamp.
So right now I am stuck with #4. The main issue is that it is intermittent - sometimes it starts to happen and sometimes it does not. Is there any way I can make apple replace the unit or the video-card? I did bring it to a apple certified service center, but they did not give any crap, even when I was able to demonstrate it to 2 people in there and gave me back the unit after failing to reproduce the problem on their own. I have all those problems in video and photos, but I don't see anywhere I could send them besides this forum.

You are still under warranty. *Call AppleCare*

No you cannot make Apple do anything. What you can do is call _Apple Customer Relations_ in your country. You can call AppleCare & ask politely & firmly to be transferred over to Customer Relations if there is no direct phone number like there is in the US. Relay to them what you stated in this post. See what they can do for you.
You posted in the wrong MBP area (Original). I have requested that a HOST move your post to the proper forum MacBook Pro (2008 and Later). There will be no need for you to repost.

Have also heard that the ipad3 revamped version is around along with the mini pad rumor..too much information - lot's of confusion pls help

    Lindsay,
Your iBookG4 is still a pretty awesome Mac. Like already said, it has the power to run Leopard, but it depends if you have an internal DVD drive.
Then I suppose you have to add up the cost of the OS, perhaps another 512MB RAM, iLife 08 and replacements for any favourite apps that you currently use (Leopard breaks a lot of stuff, but Intel breaks even more). Compare it to the cost of a new MacBook, which wil have all of that included and be 3-4x faster too.
It also depends on what you want to achieve with your iBook. My PMG4 still cuts it today, I still use it in preference to my new Mac Pro, It's about the same age as your iBook, and I'll only stop using it when it becomes "painfully" slow. My 1 year old son currently uses the Mac Pro (parts for a Mac Pro are easier to replace than those for a PMG4).
I think your choice is simple, if you can a cheap copy of Tiger, use that, it'll get your iPod Touch up and running. It came in DVD and 4 CD version (by request).
Leopard will work for you too but a lot of the best eye-candy requires quite a meaty graphics card and you may need a RAM upgrade and replacement software - OS9 Classic is not supported in Leopard.

  • Urgent issue with video size and quality.

Ok, I have Premiere Pro CS4 and I am running on Windows 7 64bit. I have a movie that I have been working on for 2 years that already has hundreds of proper LightScribe DVD's, slim cases and printed cover wraps already done and paid for. I was supposed to already be done with this and selling copies, but Premiere has royally messed things up for me and I am now in limbo with the project.
The film was recorded with simple non-HD 4:3 camcorders. Some of the footage is from years ago and was uploaded via USB low quality, but it still looks fine on YouTube, my computer, and even when I burned a DVD with the footage alone unedited. The rest was uploaded with via DV and is actually pretty good quality for being 4:3 and non-HD. I took all this footage and stretched it out with a little bit of cropping to make it widescreen on Premiere. Again, it looks great in the preview and looks fine when I exported it as a WMV.
However, when I burned it to DVD, it was horrible quality and also chopped off the sides of the film on my widescreen TV, even though I exported the film as widescreen AND burned it on the widescreen setting! Why would it do that if it was made, exported and burned as widescreen??? Also the sound was terrible! And I exported on the highest setting possible.
Second, I heard that AVI is a better format, so I tried that. The file was absolutely huge and when I opened the file with media player it wasn't the same perfect fit as the WMV. What I mean by that is, when I watched the WMV, media player showed the video as a perfect fittig window, no excess black space on the top or bottom. Same thing with several AVI mainstream movies that I have on my computer (actual movies, like Terminator Salvation, Pandorum, Black Hawk Down, etc). They all fit media player perfectly, no excess black on top or bottom. So why is it that actual movies in AVI format and my WMV video and movie files are perfect fit on media player, but when I export an AVI from Adobe Premier, it adds excess black on top and bottom? That doesn't make any sense, especially since you can look at a preview of what the exported file will look like and it doesn't look anything like what the ACTUAL export is. What kind of a joke is this?
So I pretty much need help figuring out why the exported movie is horrible quality, especially on DVD that is so bad I cannot dare to sell it to a customer, AND I need help figuring out why my Premiere Pro exported AVI's look nothing like mainstream film AVI's that I have on my computer. Someone please help, this is really hurting my business!

    hiya
well , you are certainly getting some really good help now...its like you fell into a room with the best editors and shooters and everything and you can get a lot of information and run with it...find out a lot of things.
Some of it requires you follow through on your own as much as possible ( like you have already ) by reading and googling things you dont know, etc...  this forum and these guys is how I learned a lot about this stuff in the past year or so...so listen to what they say....google what you dont understand....you cant go wrong.
    now...about what you said...
I exported the test clip as  an MPEG2-DVD and it gave me a video file with NO SOUND, a separate WAV  sound file, and two xmp files. This is not what I was looking for.
I have a movie project on  Adobe Premiere Pro CS4. I simply want to export/publish the movie, burn  it onto a DVD using Windows DVD maker and have it as top quality, like  it looks in the preview monitor on Premiere. Tell me how to do it.---
I dont use encore to burn a dvd, but use DVDit PRO.  It wants exactly what you got when you exported to mpeg 2 dvd ....a video file without sound muxed.. and a separate wav file....
I know it sounds weird but thats the way the program burns the DVD....and that has to do with making the VOB files etc for the DVD...which is just the way it is....you see the vob files AFTER you burn the DVD if you look in the DVD...
anyway, mpeg 2, mpeg 4, all that highly compressed stuff ( as you said ) is highly compressed to FIT onto the media ( DVD ) or whatever....but it plays good and it looks good...and has NOTHING to do with anything except squishing stuff down to fit the media and looking ( viewing ) GOOD.  the best movie you ever saw on DVD is mpeg 2 .....  turned into vob in the making of the DVD by the software that makes the DVD.
all these things are different animals ...what you edit , what you deliver, etc ....

  • Issues with video quality after editing in Premiere Elements.  Please help!!!

I am having issues with the quality of video output from Premiere Elements.  I tried to combine 4 videos clips that I took (all were crystal clear when viewed prior to combining them in Premiere Elements).  The first clip is quite pixelated, the second has wavy lines running across it the whole time (recorded webinar), and the third clip looks crystal clear. (FYI...first clip and third clip were both taken using the exact same settings on my Canon)  I am not very tech "savvy".  I am guessing it has something to do with the way I saved or "shared" the video after editing?  But I have NO IDEA what settings I need as I am not very "tech" savvy!  I want to upload the finished product to Vimeo.  I looked on Vimeo and followed instructions from a tutorial that a Premiere Elements user posted about how to save the best quality video for uploading to Vimeo, and the quality turned out FAR WORSE than the first time I saved it.  Please help!!!  Thanks so much!

Thanks for your response John!  Do you think my issue may be due to the way I initially "set up" the project when I created a new project from the very beginning?  I am operating on Premiere Elements 10, so I do not see an option for sharing online directly to vimeo....only facebook and Youtube.  I am combining 4 video clips.  3 of the 4 clips were shot on my Canon EOS 60D, and 1 of the video clips was a recording of a PowerPoint based webinar that we did via Meeting Burner (meetingburner.com).  Since I am combining more than 1 video format, is it likely that I will run into quality issues?  The strange thing was that 2 of the clips shot with my Canon showed up blurry after exporting/sharing my final video, but one of them was still crystal clear.  This doesn't make any sense to me since I did not change any settings on my Canon.  I didn't see any specific tutorials on setting up the project to match the video from that list of Tutorial links.

  • Quality issues with the picture in FCE

    Hi there.
I'm editing a 3 minute film in FCE HD (3.5.1). It was shot on a Sony PD150. I transfered the footage via the capture in FCE and I think I got the settings right!
Anyway, looking at the footage in the browser it says the following:
    Frame size: 720 x 576
    Compressor: DV-PAL
    Alpha: None/ignore
    Pixel Aspect: PAL CCIR-601
    Field dominance: Lower (even)
I've tried to start using LiveType (2.1) to make a good opening title and closing credits. With those two done and saved I opened FCE, imorted them as .ipr files and dropped them where I needed them in the timeline.
However, I noticed that the quality of the font is not a patch on how it was in Livetype. I understand this is a problem that has been discussed many times here but I cannot seem to find a solution to my particular problem or more importantly, understand what is going wrong.
To try and describe the problem; When looking at the Livetype text it is blurred/slightly pixelated - but only on the horizontal lines if that helps.
Now I thought this was just a livetype problem but when I now look at the video footage up close in the viewer or canvas window, it seems to have the same problem. I'm not sure I'm just being over paranoid with that though...
I've tried to put down all the info I can but if anyone needs any more please say.
So can anyone please help me to understand what is wrong?
    Many thanks in advance,
    Adam

Hey Tom. Thanks for that. I've changed the settings and it made it a little better but still not as good as the Preview on Livetype. It may help you to know that I think I chose a very difficult title - Bright red text on a black background?!
    Anyway,
All this has drawn attention to a bigger problem though that you may be able to shed some light on...
The whole issue may be with the original footage. As I said it was shot on mini DV and I've takena look at the footage (through the Finder to the Capture Scratch folder for the project) and viewed it through Quicktime. It has a similar issue. A friend of mine who works with FCP called it 'combing' effect on the edges.
Could I have done something wrong when I captured the footage from the camera via the project?
More info: Footage was shot on a PD150 with miniDV. I transfered the footage via ANOTHER camera - a bog standard sony handycam. Would this cause any problems? Or have I cocked up the settings when I imported? So how do I know what settings to import if someone hands me a DV tape and says it was shot on xxxx camera...???
Sorry for all the questions, you're helping a lot.

  • Exporting DVCPRO HD 720p60 Quality Problems with P2 footage.

I have ingested several clips from P2 cards some shot at 24 and some at 60 using fcp 5.1.4. When I go to export out a QT file I choose file>export>using quick time conversion. Under format options I select DVCPRO HD 720p60 for compression type, but I get no quality settings under the compressor heading to modify. Just Motion, preview and data rate. All of wich are locked... When I hit okay the movie settings dialog box reads Compression:DVCPRO HD 720p60 Quality: Medium Dimensions: 960x720 (1248x702) (Compressor Native). How do I change the quality to best? A friend told me he had the option to change in fcp v 5.0.1. Also, in the Sequence Setting Dialog Box under QuickTime Video Settings I select Advanced and it shows me the compression type DVCPRO HD 720p60 and Motion with Frames per second, but the box under Compressor is blank as well. Is my software faulty or am I going about exporting exporting a high quality QT HD 720p60 file the wrong way?
Secondly, when I ingest footage from a P2 card does it maintain the frame rate data that it was captured at digitally regardless of the projects audio video settings? I ask this because one project I did the easy setup after I already created a sequence by mistake with dv settings and the footage show a vid rate in the bin at 23.98 fps regardless if it is footage shot at 23.98 or 59.94. When I made a new project using the easy setup from the start and ingested a clip shot at 60 it show in the as vid rate of 59.94 not 239.8 like the first project I made. A tad confused as I feel I am not getting the best quality out of my footage. Does this have to do with setting the camera to 24pn for variable frame rates? Or does the vid rate pull from the project setting?
As a side note, some of the footage I export appears to be slightly grainy, not sure if this is a result of the setting problems I am having.
    Thank You in Advance!!!
    Best,
    Hans

If you are trying to export and maintain the same quality you have in the timeline then you don't need to use conversion. Just export to Quick Time Movie and check the box for Use Current Settings and Make Self Contained.

  • Issues with video/audio playback and Source window

I have some video that I am trying to import to get into my sequence. Anytime I open the video into my source window (or drag it to the timeline), the audio goes crazy. It starts skipping around and jumbling itself. When I open the video file in Quicktime on my computer, it opens and plays fine. Also, I don't know if it is unrelated, but sometimes when I open a video in my Source window, there is no audio. I can drag it to the Sequence and double click on it to bring the Sequence video into the Source window and it plays fine.
The video that I am having issues with is a .mov filmed from an iPad (not sure which iPad model). It is filmed in Portrait mode, not sure if that matters. Please let me know what other information might be needed to troubleshoot this issue.
    Thanks!

    Ooh. Sorry about that.
    - I am using Adobe Premiere Pro CS6 v.6.0.3
    - I'm sure I have the latest update. I'm using Creative Cloud, and the Adobe Application Update Manager says everything is up to date.
    - Operating System is Windows 7 Professional (Service Pack 1)
    - Source footage is a .mov filmed in portrait mode (I didn't record it.. Haha) on an iPad, not sure the model.
    - I am getting no error messages.
    - I was just dragging the video file from the Media Browser to the Source window. Nothing special.
    - This is working on all of the other clips filmed from the same iPad at same resolution, etc. Also, this particular video plays perfectly in Quicktime. It's just when I try to play it in Premiere Pro.
    - Other software that is currently running is standard stuff: antivirus, Outlook, Gtalk, Dropbox. Nothing that uses audio.
    - I have installed K-Lite Codec pack when I got the computer.
    - I have a Dell Preision T7600, Dual Xeon Quad-core processors (2.00GHz), 16 GBs of ram, Nvidia Quadro 4000 (2GB), and running off of a 256GB SSD.
    - I am using the Mercury Playback Engine GPU Acceleration.
    - The issue is happening on playback, both in the Source window and the Program window when I drag the video to the Sequence. It plays fine in Quicktime.
