Quality loss and sizing problem

Hi guys
I am new to the creative suite 3. I produce swf adverts which play on a 32" widescreen at 1280x720. Occasionally I have to put these swfs in a showreel and burn to dvd to play via a set top dvd player (PAL). My problem is twofold:
1. when i export the fla's as avi's the quality is perfect, but once burned to dvd it is poor
2. I cannot get the dvd to fit the 32" screen - it always "letterboxes"
I realise that the aspect of a dvd is set to 720x460, but ids there any way I can created high quality dvds to play on the 32" widescreen, without going to blu-ray?
Many thanks for any suggestions!

I don't do Pal, but notes I made when first reading this forum say that is 720x576 so you might check your 460 number

  • Significant quality loss and jagged diagonal lines when exporting from FCP

I've been working on this problem for several days and I'm going insane! Every time I export my movie from Final Cut, there is a significant quality loss. It is most noticeable in two ways: diagonal lines become very jagged (looking somewhat like diagonal lines in an older video game -- more a diagonal sequence of blocks); also, in some areas such as faces, the colors get a little blurry and there seems to some "pooling" of colors around the edges of the face.
I'm pretty sure the problem's not in capture: the Quicktime clips that I captured from the camera are all pristine. When I play them in Quicktime, I can blow them up several times their original size, and they maintain their sharp lines. (I also Reverse Telecined them all with Cinema Tools, if that's relevant.) I also know the problem's not just my computer monitor; when I play these movies on my external monitor and TV, they look bad too. The clips look bad after I bring them into Final Cut, and while I'm editing, but at first I figured that was because Final Cut sometimes doesn't show full resolution in the timeline. Still, when I export, the quality of the original captures just isn't there.
    Some details:
Captured from 24A progressive, Sony HVR V1U HDV.
Using Final Cut 6.0.1, Compressor 3.0.1, Quicktime 7.2.0, OS 10.4.10 (all the most recent versions I believe).
I've exported in many different ways: using Compressor (and have tried a number of different settings: the DVD Best Quality 90 Minutes default Setting, as well as using a variety of bit rates from 3.0-8.0, One pass CBR, Two pass CBR, Two pass VBR, Two pass VBR best; Video Formats NTSC, HD 1440x1080...I have tried many combinations. Regardless of the size of the m2v created, the files seem to have the same problem over and over. I've also tried exporting from Final Cut as a Quicktime Movie and with Quicktime Conversion. Same result. I also tried using different compressors with my Final Cut sequence: Apple Intermediate Codec (which I used when capturing -- you have to with the Sony HVR), HDV 1080p24, HDV 1080i60, Apple Pro Res 422, H.264...
What's happening? Why is Final Cut turning my nice pristine captures into jagged foulness? What can I try that I haven't yet?

    Welcome to the forums!
Unfortunately, you seem to have tried everything I can think of, and I don't have the latest versions of FCP to know if it is a bug. However, in the off chance that you haven't given this a shot:
Take a problematic 10 second section of your timeline (set in and out points) and the Export -> Quicktime (not QT Conversion) and make sure that you have it on Quality settings that you captured, and select the "Make Self Contained" box.
Look at that in Quicktime and see if it's bad. If it's not problematic, use that video file in Compressor for your render.
    Hope that helps!

  • Best Quality Setting and Letterboxing problem

Just finished 10 minute production shot with a Canon xl2 in 24p advanced pulldown with 16:9. After exporting with compressor to DVD Studio pro and burning - have some leterboxing and quality is not what I expected. Also - client reports "pause" when playing on new dell. Need the highest quality - but production needs to play on most popular newer model computers. Would appreciate any advice anyone can provide:
    1. What is best export setting to use from FCP for DVD production of a 24pa 16:9 project? Should 16:9 be checked under the advanced sequence setting - or does that cause a problem in dvd studio pro?
    2. What is best compressor setting? DVDbest quality 90 minute 16:9?
    3. In DVD Studio - under the track settings - would you check letterbox, 4;3; or pan-scan & letterbox - why is there not just a 16:9 setting? Why would DVD studio pro indicate the asset is 29 vs 24 FPS?
Really need some help on this - we have a fantastic production and wand it to be displayed in the proper format at the highest quality. Thanks so much.

although your 'normal' rendering shows the correct scenery, it looks in 'best' as if the fall-off settings of your light(s) is too high/low (?? )
I would increase these settings of the lights…

  • Crashes, sound loss, and other problems

    Hello,
I have been having some serious problems over the past several months. In the past it was fairly manageable, but recently things have been getting worse.
I have a 12-inch PowerBook G4, I bought it at the McGill bookstore in October 2004. The first problem was the apparently random crashes that Mac OS X (v.10.4.8) would experience from time to time. It was fairly infrequent at first so it didn't bother me too much (and I thought it was just some sort of glitch). But it persisted and came to be expected.
What would happen is that my screen would darken and center box would appear telling me, "You need to restart your computer. Hold down the Power button for several seconds or press the Restart button." (it would display this message in English, French, German, and Japanese for my convenience). After I restart the computer I get the message, "The computer was restarted after Mac OS X quit unexpectedly". At first it seemed to be linked to time; after a while it would just crash, sometimes after an hour or so, sometimes after as little as five minutes. (I fear as I write this that I will have to start over). More recently I've come to associate the crashes with movement of the computer; perhaps the battery (which is pretty much dead after so much use) is affecting the performance, I don't know.
The next problem, which coincided with the crashes, was my clock being reset. I assumed this was directly associated with the spontaneous shutdown of the computer, yet though the crashes continued, the clock was not always reset (just about a third of the time). This was a pretty frustrating inconvenience given the frequency of the crashes at the beginning.
The major problem that prompted me to take action was the lose of sound. One day, about a month ago now, my sound suddenly stopped working. At first I thought it was a hardware problem, but then I noticed the sound was still working with some things and just not others. For example, the sound increase/decrease indicator (the 'pop' sound when turning up or down the sound) stopped working, yet the startup sound still worked. I've found that Realplayer, MPlayer X 2, and Windows Media Player work fine but iTunes, VLC, and Quicktime don't. Most of the applications simply don't make sound but when I try to video in VLC I get the following error: "auhal: we cannot find our HAL component" or "auhal: audio-device var does not exist. device probe failed."
Other minor errors I have come across include inability to detect the Airport card (remedied upon restarting the computer) and occasional seizing up of the keyboard (the letter keys, exclusively, were unresponsive for sometime before working again suddenly without need of restart).
I've run diagnostic tools such as Disk Utility and the 'fsck' command in single-user mode, but nothing has been detected. It consistently comes up saying that everything is alright.
I have backed-up all important files and programs (with the exception of my Firefox bookmarks, do you know how I can save those?) and am prepared to do whatever it takes to bring my computer back to working order. I need my computer for schoolwork and assignments so if I can fix it myself in anyway... I would prefer to avoid lengthly repairs if possible.
Please let me know what my options are, and/or possible things I can do to repair these problems. This whole affair is, unsurprisingly, driving me crazy.
One last thing, upon launching Microsoft Word, I get the following pop-up:
    Application Launch Failure
The application "Word" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "3<Microsoft Word><Microsoft Word><MicrosoftLSLibZ>"
I do not know whether this is linked to my other problems or not. This too, is something that has recently come up and is significantly affecting my work (I have had to switch to writing my essays on TextEdit).
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Eric Oosenbrug
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

try shutting down, remove the battery, carefully pull out AirPort card and reinstall it.
maybe run hardware test included with CD kit

  • Quality loss and blurriness when imported to iMovie from Sony Handycam

I have a Sony Carl Zeiss Lens 40x Optical Zoom Handycam. The quality is crystal clear on the camera..but once it is imported into iMovie, it becomes somewhat distorted. Please help! I need to upload this video to Youtube ASAP.. I'm already past my deadline. Thanks in advance

    Hi
Sony Carl Zeiss Lens 40x Optical Zoom Handycam - Yes but this referes to many different types.
    What Sony Camera do You use ? e.g. TRV-900E, PC-330 or ?
How was it set to record ? 4x3 SD-Video (as on old CRT-TVs or 16x9 or HD or what ?
My Camera can record to Memory-Card when in Photo mode - and these movies are in a very low quality just to be small enough to add to an e-mail. Can this be what You've done ?

  • Box alignment and sizing problems

I have a JPanel (using a border layout). Its centre part holds a vertical Box, which itself holds two boxes: The top box holds three labels with centre alignment, and the bottom box holds 5 boxes, each displaying details about a product. All the components in these boxes are left-alignment
The parent JPanel (with the BorderLayout) has its preferred, minimum and maximum sizes specified. Nothihn inside it has sizes specified - in the case of the "product boxes", I do not know exactly how high they will be (it despends on the information they contain). The box that holds the five boxes has a ScrollPane, so that it doesn't really matter how long the content goes.
My problem is that the box holding the five boxes does not adhere to the width limits of the main JPanel. Say the main JPanel is 1000px wide: the
child box's content might stretch for 1500px or 2000px, flowing out of view. Since I have the horizontal scroll bar of the scroll pane set to "As needed", i can scroll across to see the content. But even if I get rid of the scroll pane entirely, the problem still occurs.
The strange thing is I have another JPanel with a very similar structure (Border layout holding box holding 5 boxes), which does not ever seem to exhibit this problem. And also, the problem appears to occur only sometimes.
Anyone seen this before or understand what's going on? I've posted the code. The first block is the constructor for the main JPanel with BorderLayout. The second block is the code for the individual "Product" panels. These are added to the "productListBox" (see below) by a separate SwingWorker thread, after the JPanel has been constructed. The third block is the doInBackground method of that SwingWorker.

You have solved the problem inadvertently
    No. Twice no.
    1) You have solved the problem. Not me. I just gave a push in the (apparently) right direction. You deserve more credits.
    2) Take my word for it, this was anything but inadvertently . Indeed it's a well-known trait of the SSCCE "methodology", that the developer often discovers the origin of the problem, and hopefully finds the solution as well.
    - If you demonstrate the problem in shorter code, means there are less suspects to investigate.
    - If you don't, then you start adding things to look more than the real program, one thing at a time, until you find one thing that introduces the problem.
I'm not promoting SSCCE to prevent or refrain people from posting questions in the forum. I'm a addict of this forum, and I'm the first one frustrated when there are no questions here.
It's just that using SSCCE often eliminates trivial problem before they have to be worded here, and leaves mostly interesting problems to investigate. And for those, having a complete runnable example is easier to copy/paste in an IDE to try out and play with.
I made up an SSCCE as you said. Because I did not want to have to bother with accessing Google Shopping (which is where the program gets the product information) i made a bunch of fake productions, all called "Xbox 360". Everything was fine.Excellent (and straight to the point of the methodology).
You then witnessed that the problem was not where you thought it were initially (I'm stretching your words a bit for the purpose of the demonstration, but it required a combination of code and certain data to exhibit the problem).
It turned out that it was the Title JLabel of the individual product information panels that was causing it to stretch beyond its bounds. I didn't pick up on it, because the problem arose even if the JLabel text didn't take up the entire width of the panel - once it got about 2/3 of the way across, the width would increase.I'm surprised again. Don't you have another widget on the same "line", in addition to the label?
But I trust your findings (without an SSCCE I can't commit myself :o)
I'll try switching to a multiline text holder so that the text can wrap around.Yes, that sounds sensible for such a thing as "product information".
Thank you, jduprez. I'll remember to post a SSCCE next time I have an issue.Great. I'm glad you solved your problem, and I'm glad I haven't deterred you from posting at all! :o)
Darryl: thank you for clearning that up. I've been confused as to which one to use.Yes.
I will post something one of these days to have that cleared up (the tutorial recommends to brutally call revalidate()repaint()+ , but I think that's exagerated: http://download.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/uiswing/layout/howLayoutWorks.html, http://download.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/uiswing/layout/problems.html)

  • Memery Loss and Syncing problems

My Ipod Touch 4G (Version 4.3.5) has a Memory problem: It has over 2GB on the "Other" Part, yet doesnt clearly say what this is. Every time i Sync It raises the "other" bar until i have no Free space left, Then my iPod said it had no Disk Space left. This problem ocoured a while ago and means i cant sync my ipod anymore.

Is it 2GB or only 1/4 of that?
Maybe there is just the amount iOS has to have for its use.
Did you look at how much storage Safari and other apps take up? you always have those, you can clear history and cache there. Same for mail.

  • Printing and Sizing Problems with PDF Files

I have grading keys saved as PDF files.  When I open them in the Adobe Reader X, some come up looking fine, fitting nicely on an 8.5" x 11" page and ready for print.  Others come up looking shrunken and in the middle of the page.  When I try to resize and print these, I get all kinds of funky results.
What I want to do is process all the PDF files (grading keys) so that they will fit nicely on the 8.5x11, without the user having to do a bunch a stuff resizing, etc.
I have included links to two PDF files below.  The first comes up fine in the Adobe Reader and the sond does not.  Can anyone help me with this perplexing issue?  Thanks.
    www.goodnewsjail.org/good.pdf  (Formatted correctly)
www.goodnewsjail.org/toosmall.pdf (Comes up looking scrunched on the page)
Note:  I might add that when I open these files in Adobe Photoshop CS, the one above that looks good comes up with dimensions 23.687"x17.745", while the one that comes up looking funky has dimensions 10.24"x7.85".  I am as confused as a termite in a yo-yo.

Both of your documents have the same size: 279.4mm x 215.9mm.  The difference is that the 'good.pdf' has its content evenly distributed over the available size, the other one has its content minimized in the center, with a large white space around it (in Adobe Acrobat).
As for why it shows a different size in Photoshop, I have no idea.
There is not much you can do about it with Adobe Reader, but you can change the size using Photoshop or Illustrator.  See attachment to this post.

    Thx....

    Hi
    Documentation is here : http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps8293/tsd_products_support_series_home.html
It would appear you haven't set up the SQL connection as directed in chapter 3 of the install guide.

  • Serious quality loss with MTS files and iMovie '11

    Hello,
I have some issues with my brand new Panasonic HDC SD700 (a full HD camera)
I experience serious quality loss when I use iMovie to create a movie.
I did some tests, but still puzzled int this world of codecs and formats.
Maybe some of you can help.
I have made a short shot of 450 sec with highest mode (1080p 24fps)
It show is finder as a .MTS file size 99MB, I'm very happy with the quality when I play this with VLC.
iMovie turns this file into a .mov file with 635MB size, in Apple Intermediate Codec, Linear PCM, Timecode. This quality is already poor compared to original MTS file.
No wonder that the output file (select 1080p H.264 codecs) results also in unacceptable quality.
I'm running latest imOvie version with all updates etc.
I have no idea were to look to solve this issue. It is quite annoying since I have invested in a top Cam recorder. Not sure is Final cut express will sure the issue either.....

I have made a short shot of 450 sec with highest mode (1080p 24fps)
Have you tried shooting at the PAL standard of 25fps? I checked the specs for your Panasonic but didn't see any mention of a 24fps mode, but most reviews seem to miss mentioning the shooting modes. If you did indeed shoot at 24fps, did you choose this frame rate when importing to iMovie '11?
I export as 1080p (same as original. My output is a bit blurry and colors are a bit pale.
Did you use the 1080p preset under Share to Media Browser, or Export using QuickTime? If the latter, be sure to select an appropriate data rate - if set too low this may result in poor quality output.
And yes you are right I'm using IMovie '11, quite confusing that '11 means version 9.0
Yes - very confusing! In the forums, iMovie versions are generally referred to by their year number, not version number. It's a pity that we have version 9.0 (iMovie '11) and iMovie '09.
Glad you liked the video - it looked very clear on YouTube at 1080p Full Screen, at least to my ageing eyes!

  • Tif export quality loss

    hi,
i exported a tif sequence from a mp4 in premiere (cs6) to do some compositing on it. the exported images look the same but when doing some color correction on it the tif sequence reveals that it's in lower quality.
the left side is the tif export with significant less detail.
i also tried ae with color management but i always had the same problem.
rendering with 'use max depth' and 'use max quality' did not solve the problem.
did i miss something or is premiere processing some colors wrong internally?
(as a sidenote, quicktime player, nuke, vegas12 worked just fine)

    hi,
it looks like the problem is related to mpeg 4. i did not have time to do further testing. here is the file info:
    Format                         : MPEG-4 Visual
    Format profile                 : Advanced Simple@L3
    Format settings, BVOP          : Yes
    Format settings, QPel          : No
Format settings, GMC           : No warppoints
Format settings, Matrix        : Default (H.263)
it did not occur with other videos.
the interesting thing is that the quality is fine within the timeline. but upon output there is a quality loss.
no, output is 8bit. as mentioned in the first post 'use max depth' did not solve the problem.
quicktime based applications did not have the issue.
as for the color shift problem i thought it is related to the same issue but it was something different and is fixed now. i was unable to edit the post to remove it.

  • Quality Loss When Importing Video into Timeline...Any Ideas??

    Hey all -
I'm fairly new to CS4, so excuse me if this question is a little dumb.
I've offered to edit a friend's actor showreel to familiarize myself with CS4. He gave me a bunch of HD clips: they're .MOV files, and are 1920x1080 and 23.976fps.
I can import a clip and drag it into the preview screen in the middle: it looks fine. However, when I drag it onto the timeline, it suddenly looks faded and blurred. It's not horrible, but it loses the vibrancy of color, the sharpness and the contrast of the original clip. A lot of the quality is gone.
I've tried opening the project with a number of different settings, no difference. I thought it might look OK when I exported it, but it looks just like it does on the timeline monitor: a little washed-out, blurred, just not as nice as the original.....
I'd hate to present it to my pal looking like this, can anyone suggest a solution? I tried everything I could think of already....
    Thanks!!
    B

    Hi Hunt -
many thanks for your reply. I've spent the last couple of days trying to follow your advice and do more research.....still no luck.
Firstly, I upgraded my OS to Windows 7, thought it might help for some reason. Didn't. I downloaded a bunch of codec packs.
    Gspot reports:
    Codec: AVC1
    Name: H.264
    Codec Status: undetermined
So I'm basically running through all the possible output formats, but really it doesn't seem to be an encoding problem: the quality loss happens as soon as I move the file from the preview screen to the timeline.
If you have any othe suggestions I'be very pleased!!
    Thanks
    Bruce

  • Another quality loss issue: exporting

I see a lot of people have problems with quality loss.
I am importing an movie of an animated screengrab (using Snapzpro). This movie looks great - nice and sharp when viewed in QT. After importing into iMovie it's slightly blurred, notr a big deal just looks a bit "warm".
However when I export it looks bad, diagonal lines are very jagged. I've tried export at Full quality, I've tried expert settings with DV-PAL and many other codecs.
It's just about OK if I use "none", and then import into QT Pro and export with DV-PAL - what I don't understand is why I can't just use DV-PAL direct from iMovie.
Is this something I just have to put up with? Would it better with Final Cut Express?

Actually I discovered since posting the question, that the dimension is something to due with it, but too small rather than too large. I was capturing at 640 x 480 and I discovered that capturing 768 x 576.
I also think that the nature of the image is crucial. This is large scale musical notation - lots of diagonal black and white straight lines so any jaggedness becomes very obvious.
What I still don't understand is why the export from iMovie using DV PAL is not as good as the export from QT using DV PAL - I have to export from iMovie with no compression, then re export from QT Pro.
Although I,m totally ready to accept this is a human operator error, I've also seen lots of people say iMovie does degrade on importing which is why I wonder if I need final Cut Express or Pro

  • Huge quality loss in iMove '11

    Hello fellow iMovie users.
Yesterday I upgraded to iLife 11 to get the new iMovie and its "new" audio editing capabilities. I could ofcourse just buy it from Mac App Store, but I am principally against App Store and its strict rules, so I choosed to get it the old way.
Anyway, I liked what i saw. Finally the new iMovie was about as good as the five year old one, and had some neat features like chroma key and cropping.
So I decided to start practicing and create a short video based on some old DV-videos filmed with my Canon MV950 DV-PAL camera.
I imported the footage into iMovie, and noticed some significant quality loss after the import.
And it get worse. After I exported the video, it seems like it is heavily compressed, even if I'm exporting to QuickTime and selects the highest quality possible.
I have some screenshots to show you the differences.
    This is the original DV-footage.
The imported video. Notice the higher compression and the choppy edges.
And this is the exported video. Notice the insanely bad quality, especially in dark areas.
Is there any way to fix this, or do I have go back to iMovie HD?
PS. Sorry if my post is a bit unreadable. I'm from Norway.

    Steve,
While I agree everyone should have owned a HD camera by now, there are a lot of low-end SD cameras that are still being sold today. In this era of our economy, consumers are sensitive to prices; especially low or lower prices.
And unlike the video camcorder boom of the 80s with Sony introducing the Video8 handycam (shoulder mounted camcorder), people today do not video using traditional camcorders. Most either do it through a digital camera, DSLR, iPhone or blogger cameras and are already mostly in an acceptable progressive format. There is nothing wrong with DV style cam. Canon GL-2 and the Panasonic DVX-100 are still commanding such a very high price tag for cameras of older technology and still being repaired goes to show that there are people out there still using it.
If one can convert quality interlaced footage into quality progressive footage, you can use that footage and create good results using iMovie 11. I agree with you and Tom that iMovie 11 captures interlaced footage in full. But what's the use if it can't make a good product in the end that looks like what iMovie 6HD can do and when there are PC software out there including the free Windows Movie Maker that can do this with no problem.
Consumers, unlike some of us, only relate to past software used and are usually benign to the fact of progressive vs interlaced. I have dealt with some mis-informed customers that they believed FULL HD only means 1080p at 60fps; anything else is not. I digress.
With Mac users, they don't necessarily follow the same upgrade frequency as PC users either. Macs generally last a lot longer between upgrades compared to a PC because they don't have to run a barage of virus/spam/anti-malware growing definition files which ultimately slow an otherwise healthy PC down. Macs do not have to worry about this.

  • Quality loss after exporting 1280 x 960 30fps footage

    Hello everyone,
Everytime I edit and export footage shot with my GoPro camera (1280x960p, 30fps) the quality gets a little less. Very frustrating as I am clueless after a long time of looking for what I'm doing wrong..
I use Premiere Pro Version 4.2.1
    Sequence presets:
    General
    Editing mode: Desktop
    Timebase: 29,97fps
    Video Settings
    Frame size: 1280h 960v (1,0000)
    Frame rate: 29,97 frames/second
Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square Pixels (1.0)
    Fields: No Fields (Progressive Scan)
    Export settings:
    Format: H.264
    Preset: Custom
    TV Standard: NTSC
    Frame Width: 1280
    Frame Height: 960
    Frame Rate (fps) 29.97
    Field Order: None (Progressive)
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square Pixels.
Has anybody got an idea what could help here?

Thanks for the replies guys, but unfortunately the problem isn't really solved yet..
I tried checking the maximum render quality, but that only resulted in my laptop not being able to smoothly play the exported video.
Filming with the 1280 x 720 setting is possible, but then the footage just doesn't look that sharp.. (as I can't film in 60fps, I got the first GoPro 960).
I installed Cineform and converted a little test video to AVI. This resulted in an export video without quality loss, but the conversion with Cineform took way too long for it to be a practical solution cause I edit a lot.
At last, Abhishek Kapoor, I couldn't find the video setting you're talking about to increase the maximum bitrate.
Any other ideas that might work?
