Quality loss exporting jpeg and PDF to jpeg

Trying to get an understanding on why the difference in quality when creating a JPEG from InDesign using 2 different methods.
1st Method (best quality—Sharp & Crisp):
InDesign/Export JPEG
Export settings:
Quality: Maximum
Format Method: Baseline
Resolution (ppi): 300
Open in PhotoShop/ Save as JPEG
2nd Method (looks washed out):
InDesign/Export PDF [High Quality Print]
Open PDF and Save As JPEG
I used default settings except changed
Conversion:
Colorspace: RGB
Resolution: 300 pixels

Just thought i might add that i have encountered this same problem and that if i want a high quality jpeg i save as pdf then, open and re-save as jpeg in photoshop.
I never knew my jpeg's weren't top quality until a customer informed that my jpegs were not of as good quality as jpeg's received off other designers they use.
Unfortunately i have no fix for you, but thought it may be of interest to know its not just you!

Massive text quality loss exporting from CS6

I have tried every single render setting from hd presets, uncompressed, h.264 and all different bit rates and max render settings and I keep getting the same result... Low quality text.

All I want is the video too look identical to the one in my preview window.
The text was created in premiere and I did not download it from the internet.
Does anybody have any suggestions?

If your project is DV then export to a format with SD settings. Upscaling DV to HD is only making it worse.
What is your source exactly and what is your sequence settings.

Themes in 8.0.1--Will they create quality loss with DV and HDV

I asked this question somewhere else, but didn't get a response. Maybe I wasn't clear. In Steve's book, he states what to stay away from, but he never really mentions themes. He says maps and backgrounds, but nothing about the themes.

I would expect it to be widescreen on all the television sets.
You don't have to do this in two projects. You can do it in one project in separate sequences, just change the settings before you capture the media and make a new sequence in that setting. You could combine the HD material into the DV anamorphic sequence to make a single sequence. Export that. Fix it in QT and then make one iDVD movie if you wanted.

Aperture Exporting JPEG's from RAW: file size and quality questions?

So, I'm using Aperture 2 and I've got some questions about exporting from RAW to JPEG. I shoot with a Nikon D70 so original RAW files are 5-6mb in size. After doing some basic post processing when I export the pics at "full size" with picture quality of 11 out of 12 then the resulting JPEG is about half the file size of the original RAW file. For example a 5.6mb RAW becomes a 2.6mb JPEG. The resolution in pixels per inch and and the overall image size remain unchanged. Have I lost picture quality due to the exporting JPEG being smaller in file size?
My friend who works with me prefers to edit in Photoshop and when he follows the same workflow his saved JPEG from the identical RAW file in Photoshop is minimally smaller in file size, say 5.6mb to 5.3mb. He's telling me that my Aperture edited photos are losing quality and resolution.
Is he right, are my pics of lesser quality due to being a smaller file size? I've always been told that the quality of a picture is not in the mbs, but the pixel density.
I've bee told that Aperture has a better compression engine and that the resulting files are of the exact same quality because the PPI and image size are the same. Is that what explains the much smaller file sizes in Aperture?
I tried changing the picture quality in the export menu to 12 out of 12, but the resulting JPEG then becomes larger than the original RAW at over 7mbs.
Can someone please help me understand this better? I don't want to lose picture quality if that is indeed what is happening.

JPEG is a "lossy" file compression algorithm. Whether Aperture or PS, *every time a JPEG is saved some loss occurs*, albeit minimal at the 11 or 12 level of save, huge losses at low save levels. Some images (sky, straight diagonal lines, etc.) are more vulnerable to showing visible jpeg artifacts.

*Both of you are losing image data when you save to jpeg.* IMO the differences between the apps is probably just how the apps work rather than actually losing significantly more data. The real image data loss is in using JPEG at all!

The issue here is not how many pixels (because you are not varying that) but how much data each pixel contains. In this case once you avoid lossy JPEG the quality mostly has to do with different RAW conversion algorithms. Apple and Adobe both guess what Nikon is up to with the proprietary RAW NEF files and the results are different from ACR to Apple to Nikon. For my D2x pix I like Nikon's conversions the best (but Nikon software is hard to use), Aperture second and Adobe ACR (what Photoshop/Bridge uses) third. I 98% use Aperture.

JPEG is a useful format but lossy. Only use it as a _last step_ when you must save files size for some reason and are willing to accept the by-definition loss of image data to obtain smaller files (such as for web work or other on-screen viewing). Otherwise (especially for printing) save as TIFF or PSD which are non-lossy file types, but larger.
As to the Aperture vs. ACR argument, RAW-convert the same original both ways, save as TIFF and see if your eyes/brain significantly prefer one over the other. Nikon, Canon etc. keep proprietary original image capture data algorithms secret and each individual camera's RAW conversion is different.

Lightroom 5 book module trims pixels on JPEG and PDF export

I'm making a 12x12" book and want to export at 250dpi. I'm expecting my pages to be square and exactly 3000x3000 pixles. When I export to JPEG or PDF the pages are not square and JPEGs are 2968 x 3000.
I've seen the same question asked regarding LR4. It appears to not have been fixed or addressed in LR5.
I'm not using Blurb to create books which I understand is the publisher that requires these odd sized pages and why LR exports pages this way. Oddly, there is a special export for Blurb books; I wouldn't think that the generic JPEG and PDF exports should follow the Blurb standard. Idealy, I want my JPEG exports to be two-page spreads at 6000 x 3000 pixels. I can stitch together two pages in Photoshop easily enough, but not if the pages are not the correct size to begin with.
For now, I'll use LR5 to mock up a book and then re-create the whole thing manually in PS, which is really sad and such a waste of time given that LR is so close to being able to export exactly what I want.
Would love to see this fixed in an update soon.

These are both bugs that have been fixed since the LR4 beta. Thanks for bringing them up, though.

PDF quality problems exporting from InDesign and Photoshop

I'm having big problems exporting my InDesign files to PDFs and retaining the res. And it's not just the images (I understand about the dpi) it's the type on there too.
I have been exporting as the preset High Quality Print - is this wrong. Are there other settings to ensure the PDF I export retains the high-res quality and clarity?
At the moment it comes out high-res when I export it as a jpeg or eps but not PDF.
I have also noticed the same problem when I export to a PDF from Photoshop.
I really need to create interactive and high quality print PDFs from my InDesign files.
Please can you advise.

I am also having problems with pdfs exported from Illustrator and Indesign recently. I didn't have these problems before, so I don't kno if something has changed in my settings that I am unaware of.
When I use the 'japanese dots' border in Indesign, it shows on the pdf as a kind of dotted line. I'm exporting as 'High Quality Print'. I switched to Illustrator and drew a line with the pen tool, and converted it to a dotted line; it looked just how I wanted in in Illustrator, but as soon as I exported it, the same thing happened.

Highest quality digital from .jpeg to printer ? Best workflow to .pdf ?

I use photoshop mostly to remove color info and resize for printing in manuals setup on InDesign. I wonder if there is a better route than what I usually do, which is : open in photoshop > remove color info > resize > save to .pdf. My question is that I wonder about quality loss during the resizing.
There is a little work flow disruption in the save for .pdf window ... one can no longer flash through here hitting the return button because the comment area is pre-highlighted so the return key is active there instead of at the former work flow "save" button. Is there a way to set a preference so that the comment field is not activated and one can simply click through the choice panels rather than drag a curser around?

I print in black and white because it's so much less expensive and there is no need for color.
The photos come out of the digital camera as .jpeg and they are larger files than I think are necessary for a slightly less than 300 dots per inch print resolution.
Work flow from InDesign is > PDF open with Acrobat > Quite Imposing Acrobat plug-in > save imposed .pdf for printing.
People here in the forums used to say adobe.pdf is the best way to save the photos but I notice that when cutting down the size the resolution choice is pixels per inch rather than dots per inch but when saving to .pdf the option is for high quality print. I have never figured out why Adobe's dialog box choices have never included a 300 dpi option for printing, that's why I asked this question, there is no use saving at higher resolution than a printer can deal with but I haven't actually figured out how to provide an exact printer friendly maximum quality.

Can I use preview to export multiple page PDF as jpegs?

Using Preview, I export multiple page PDF as jpeg and results are the first page only as jpeg. Can I use preview to export multiple page PDF as jpeg for every page?

Automator is great for this if you need to export many pages to JPG, or just have to do this often.
Two other quick and dirty way sto get it done:
(1) Enable thumbnail view, click on the ONE PAGE you want to convert to jpg, then choose "export." If you choose more than one page, only the first will get exported to jpg.
(2) Create a copy of the file, delete all the pages except the one you want to export to JPG, and export that page. You may be able to "undo" the delete, get all your pages back again, and re-delete all but the one you want to export, etc. I would not recommend doing this on the original version of the file because of Preview's autosave so-called "feature."

Batch Process Export As and Save As JPEG Question?

What is the method for creating scaled JPEGs from PNG files with batch processing (File | Batch Process...)?
Application environment: Fireworks CS4.
Using History panel, I manually captured instructions
Modify | Transform | Numeric Transform (13%)
Modify | Canvas | Fit Canvas
File | Save As (JPEG)
History panel's saved JavaScript file script:

fw.getDocumentDOM().setDocumentCanvasSizeToDocumentExtents(true);
fw.saveDocumentAs(null, true);
Running this sequence as a batch job requires manually selecting JPEG and "okaying"
CS4 documentation for saveDocumentAs is defined with different argument list: fw.saveDocumentAs(document) . CS4 documentation also has: fw.exportDocumentAs(document, fileURL, exportOptions) to export JPEG (80% quality). CS4 feature File | Image Preview... | Export does not create a history record for guidance. I cannot find an example of either instruction save a file to a local folder in JPEG format. My objective is to add an additional batch step Rename (prefix) for the JPEG output, and script this a a batch process.

Thank you. Your suggestion helped clear my mental log jam.
Fireworks batch scripting seems to work in reverse.
Using "Batch Process..." scripting interface 'Export' (as JPEG) option first, 'Rename' (add Prefix) option second, and then follow these by using the history panel's 2 previously saved steps (Numeric Transform, Fit Canvas), batch process now works. PNG file (list) is saved in targeted folder as a reduced scale JPEG with a prefixed file name.
Batch Process allows the entire newly defined command sequence to be saved (script.js). Placing this (renamed) file into Firework's batch look-up directory for scripts (C:\Documents and Settings\account_name\Application Data\Adobe\Fireworks CS4\Commands) does not work. The file name does not display in "Batch Process" window "Batch options:" Commands drop-down list.
Batch Process only works by recreating the above steps each use.
The new (JavaScript) file is 26 KB. Is script file size limited in Fireworks "Batch options:" feature?

Jpeg quality on export

I am experiencing a problem with the quality of the jpegs I get when exporting from Aperture. What I want to do is export adjusted NEF files to jpeg at the highest quality but at a reduced size to fit within 950x950. I have a preset arranged and the exported file is at the correct size. The resulting file however is not as sharp as I would expect and often has indistinct but readily visible flaws (almost as though the pixels have not been perfectly put together).
The same file exported from a trial version of Lightroom 2 are pixel perfect and visibly sharper. I have been viewing both exported jpeg files in Preview. I really like Aperture and use it a great deal. I do however need to sort this problem out asap.
I would be very grateful if you have any ideas on how to resolve the matter.

Thanks very much for your input Ian. Here are a couple of examples. Small differences to be sure (although I have seen worse than this), but visible nontheless. I would look particularly at the rendering of the sea near the rocks on the left of the picture

Jpeg quality when exporting

Is there a way to adjust the jpeg quality when exporting or editing? I can change the image size, which is helpful, but it would be nice if I could change the jpeg compression in order to reduce the file size. Thanks!

i noticed from you other post that you are using AOL.
In iPhoto Preferences, have you chosen AOL as your email client.
Once you do this, when you choose an images within iPhoto and click the email icon, iPhoto will open your AOL mail client and attach the photos with the size you chose in the export dialog.
You might even want to make a new post that is all yours so it is easier for us to address all your needs.
Give us the version of iPhoto you are using, the Mail client (AOL) and any other information on what you want to do and we will tell you how to accomplish it.

Export jpeg ignores 300dpi setting and becomes 72dpi

When I’m exporting my file (1200 x 1200 pixels) to jpeg, the final jpeg is only 72dpi even though I pick 300dpi and max quality from the JPEG options window. The original file I’m using is large enough 3366 × 2476 pixels with 300 dpi. Help anyone?

I open it in Preview. Then Tools > Inspector. I attached a screenshot of what I see. Thanks for trying to help.

Trouble opening jpeg and pdf files.

I have a fully current version of Photoshop (ICloud). When attempting to open some jpeg files and pdf files, they remain ghosted and will not open. I think it may have to do with the settings in the 'open' window but i don't know what to do. ?????

Significant quality loss and jagged diagonal lines when exporting from FCP

I've been working on this problem for several days and I'm going insane! Every time I export my movie from Final Cut, there is a significant quality loss. It is most noticeable in two ways: diagonal lines become very jagged (looking somewhat like diagonal lines in an older video game -- more a diagonal sequence of blocks); also, in some areas such as faces, the colors get a little blurry and there seems to some "pooling" of colors around the edges of the face.
I'm pretty sure the problem's not in capture: the Quicktime clips that I captured from the camera are all pristine. When I play them in Quicktime, I can blow them up several times their original size, and they maintain their sharp lines. (I also Reverse Telecined them all with Cinema Tools, if that's relevant.) I also know the problem's not just my computer monitor; when I play these movies on my external monitor and TV, they look bad too. The clips look bad after I bring them into Final Cut, and while I'm editing, but at first I figured that was because Final Cut sometimes doesn't show full resolution in the timeline. Still, when I export, the quality of the original captures just isn't there.
Some details:
Captured from 24A progressive, Sony HVR V1U HDV.
Using Final Cut 6.0.1, Compressor 3.0.1, Quicktime 7.2.0, OS 10.4.10 (all the most recent versions I believe).
I've exported in many different ways: using Compressor (and have tried a number of different settings: the DVD Best Quality 90 Minutes default Setting, as well as using a variety of bit rates from 3.0-8.0, One pass CBR, Two pass CBR, Two pass VBR, Two pass VBR best; Video Formats NTSC, HD 1440x1080...I have tried many combinations. Regardless of the size of the m2v created, the files seem to have the same problem over and over. I've also tried exporting from Final Cut as a Quicktime Movie and with Quicktime Conversion. Same result. I also tried using different compressors with my Final Cut sequence: Apple Intermediate Codec (which I used when capturing -- you have to with the Sony HVR), HDV 1080p24, HDV 1080i60, Apple Pro Res 422, H.264...
What's happening? Why is Final Cut turning my nice pristine captures into jagged foulness? What can I try that I haven't yet?

Unfortunately, you seem to have tried everything I can think of, and I don't have the latest versions of FCP to know if it is a bug. However, in the off chance that you haven't given this a shot:
Take a problematic 10 second section of your timeline (set in and out points) and the Export -> Quicktime (not QT Conversion) and make sure that you have it on Quality settings that you captured, and select the "Make Self Contained" box.
Look at that in Quicktime and see if it's bad. If it's not problematic, use that video file in Compressor for your render.

The difference in sharpness and overall contrast between LR5 and LR4 low res. export JPEGs

Installed the evaluation copy of the LR yesterday and as always compared with the previous version (4.4) of the program. The first and not very pleasant difference was the sharpness of the exported JPEGs in low resolution. In full resolution exports it is not that much noticeable. As you may see on the below photo LR4 export is noticeably sharper than LR5. All the export settings were the same in both versions. I used my saved export preset for both JPEGs. The LR5 exported JPEG is slightly lighter than the one in LR4.4. Both photos look the same in develop mode screen, so the difference is in export processing.
Would be great to know hear the experience, thoughts and comments of others about it.
