Quality of an AVI File

This is not a premiere elements issue, but I am using the software to create a project.  My problem deals with the quality of the video I took on vacation.  I inadvertently place the camera in a low resolution mode.  Although the video can be seen using Realplayer or Windows media player, the quality is only accepatble for a very small screen.  When I transport the video to my project, the quality is unacceptable.  Is there anyway I can improved the quality of the original video?

Thanks for the feedback.  I copied the information and went to the  main
forum and started a new discussion.  I also added a paragraph which  tried to
address your interest in the source of the video.

Unfortunately, you have posted to the Tips & Tricks sub-forum,  which is
basically a repository for articles on how to do things in PrE/PrPro.  There
is not much traffic here, so maybe our hard-working MOD, Steve, can move
this for you, out to the main forum, where you will get more  input.
In the meantime, tell us more about your AVI source  material, and how you
are getting it into PrE. This
http://forums.adobe.com/thread/503092?tstart=0 will give you some background  on the AVI wrapper. Where I am going here
is to get the highest possible  quality to start with.
Now, how do you hope to deliver this  material, maybe on a DVD-Video?
Depending on exactly what you  find objectionable in your Video, once we
know that you have the best possible  source, there are some things that might
be able to improve it some. If, when  we are sure that you have the best,
you could describe the issues for you,  we'll be glad to recommend Effects,
and treatments to try. Some will require  that you experiment, as there are
not necessarily Presets that will fix all  problems for all source files. At
this point, do not expect miracles, and be  ready to compromise on the
ultimate quality. Unfortunately, there is no "Easy  Button," of "Pretty Filter."
Besides Steve moving your post to  the main forum, I'd also suggest that
you post to the Community (like this  forum) at http://www.muvipix.com.
There are a lot of very helpful people  there, and a few specialize in
restoration of poor source footage. There might  be some excellent ideas right off
the bat. Please read the AVI article first,  and be prepared with as many
details, as you can offer, so the same questions  will not be asked in each
location.
Good luck, and please report  the details of your source  footage,

  • Reduced quality of .vob and avi files

    Hi Guys
    I need some help please.
I am working on a trail version of adobe elements 10 on a new macbook pro lion.
    No problem installing application.
When I import video either in vob from dvd or avi format, the quality of the video is reduced tremendously, there are no white black lines, no jumping, just low quality.
On the bottom right hand side, the application tells me that it is doing something called conforming.
When I play the same video in vlc on the mac, or on my pc, the video runs fine with no problems and the picture is crystal clear.
I tried the things suggested in support:
    1. Rendering
    2. Checked the fps are the same as the original video ie 25 fps
    3. Tried using application to convert vob file to mp4 of all different levels of quality using external program (wondershare video converter ultimate for mac)
Elements looks like a great program, the closest to the magix I used to run on my pc, but the problem at the moment is that the quality is reduced.
    Is there a codec problem?
The vob and avi files are not recognized by quicktime.
    Please let me know asap
    Thanks
    Simon

Much has to do with which project settings you've selected in Premiere Elements when you set up your project. (For DVD video, you should be using the Hard Disk Camcorder/standard definition settings for your project.) You also should not mix DVD and AVI footage in a project. They interlace very differently and this can cause problems in your output.
Much also depends on where your AVIs are coming from. Unless your AVIs are from a miniDV camcorder, captured over a FireWire connection, you are likely working with a codec that is not fully compatible with the program. Where did these AVIs come from?
Conforming is an important part of the process of the program rendering non-workflow formats (such as DVD VOB files) into editable workflow formats. Allow the program the fully conform your DVD video and use the proper project presets and you should get results that are virtually identical to the original footage.
Parts 1 and 2 of my free 8 part Basic Training tutorials at Premiere Elements support site Muvipix.com will help  you understand how and why project set-up and proper footage formats are so important.

Final cut pro X is supposed to accept AVI. However the AVI files my client gave me cannot be imported in my Final cut pro X. I know there are softwares that can convert AVI to APPLE PRO RES, but does that alter the quality of the media ?

There are apps that will give you tech specs on files. I think Media Info is one. Most likely it's in done delivery codec like DiVX. AVI is a piece of **** as a container anyway and should have been completely abandoned years ago.

  • Is microsoft avi the highest quality format to export an avi file in premiere pro cs4?

    Hello,
I exported an avi file in premiere pro cs4 in media encoder using Microsoft avi format but the quality turned out poor on dvd, what's the highest quality format I can use?
    Please help
    Thanks
    Elio

    Elio,
As has been stated, DV-AVI is not the format FOR a DVD-Video. However, it can be used (and often is) as a transport medium into a DVD authoring program, like Encore.
Can you please outline your workflow from PrPro to the final DVD, and is it a DVD-Video (will contain MPEG-2 material in VOB "containers"), or a DVD-Data, that is then played on a computer with something like Windows Media Player, VLC, MediaPlayer Classic HC, etc.?
Good luck, and please let us know exactly what you are doing, and the programs used.

  • Importing .avi file into premier pro CS3 without losing quality

I have used CAMStudio to capture datalogging on my screen. The file size is 1280 x 800 pixels with a frame rate of 200 frames/second. I have tried using virtual dub and many other programs to create an avi file that I can import into premier without losing quality. None of this has worked. I have tried using the forum post http://forums.adobe.com/message/2060872#2060872 but this didn't work for me either. If anyone has a simple solution for this problem I would greatly appreciate it. Even if anyone could suggest a different screen capture program the will smoothly import into premiere without losing quality.

Very recently, Jeff Bellune posted his workflow for Camtasia/CamStudio material. I'd do a Search for "Techsmith" then filter on this forum and on People = Jeff Bellune. IIRC, he basically updated Dan Isaacs' suggestions. I do not think that his techniques were limited to CS4, but could be wrong.
If I can find that post, I'll add the link here. Actually, I need to make sure that I have that link in an article that I did on Camtasia/CamStudio workflow elsewhere.
    Good luck,

  • Cs 5.5 low quality exported avi file

i imported a avi file and recorded audio clips to voice over the avi.  the original avi file was a screen capture using Camtasia software.  when i edited the avi file i had to make cuts and copy and past and sometimes stretch the avi to accomodate the voice overs.  so after all is said and done the exported file looks like crap and you can't read the words or make out the transistions.  How can i improve the quality of the avi on export?  please help

As Harm alludes, AVI can contain almost anything. Take a look at this FAQ Entry: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/440037?tstart=0
For Camtasia footage, see this article, and especially Jeff Bellune's comments in the linked threads: http://forums.adobe.com/message/2324919#2324919 There are many references to earlier versions of PrPro, but most will apply to CS 5 and later.

  • How to Export a HIGH QUALITY .avi file.  help PLEASE

Hi, I am trying to export my movie to an avi file, so I can upload it on youtube. I've done some searches online, but have not found any answers that work. I keep getting very low image quality, no matter what settings I choose. I've gone into quicktime preferences and saved the file in "high quality" and that doesn't work. How can I export a movie file with the same image quality as the original project? I'm using Explicit to split the file into two parts, but it can only handle .avi files. Please help!

Ah, I just converted it with the wrong compressor. I used DV/DVCPRO-NTSC prog. scan and it looks beautiful.

  • Poor quality importing a 3 hour AVI file.

I am importing a 3 hour avi file. Its about 40 gigs. If I view the file outside of Encore, it looks great. As soon as I import it, it gets real choppy, and looks like its been compressed in quality. Is there some sort of compression that takes place even before I transcode the video? Should I import an mpeg version of the 3 hour video instead? The Mpeg version would only be 4 gigs. I am using a DVD9 to record to. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It's probably just your monitor settings. Do you have it set to fit?
Encore doesn't do anything to the source material until you tell it to.

  • Importing .avi file into Premiere CS5 and losing on quality

    Hello Adobe users,
I'm having a problem with importing my material in Premiere CS5. It's file extension is .avi and I'm not sure which step I do wrong to get his but it's pretty important to me to find out what's the problem.
Every time I try to import material which was captured on another computer, I get it all lossy in Premiere and it's really obvious.
Maybe I make mistake with opening new project?
I'm not sure which camera is used, but I'm sure it's Panasonic and it films in cinemascope (widescreen).
I would really appreciate your help here!
    Thanks in advance, Filip!

    Flip,
    Welcome to the forum.
AVI can hold all sorts of things, and those will be all important in addressing your problem. This ARTICLE goes into more detail, and shows how to "peek inside the AVI wrapper." Please let us know what CODEC is used in that file.

  • How can I edit .avi files in FCPX?

What's the best way to convert .avi files so they can be edited in FCPX and then "shared" with iPad and Apple TV2? Definition of best meaning least amount of time and effort without noticeable degradation of quality. I'm an advanced amateur photographer with increasing interest in video but limited knowledge of the technical aspects.
Now shooting HD with a DSLR camera but have over 100 hours of home/family video taken with Canon GL1 (mini-DV tape) then captured using Sony Vegas Pro. Captured files are .avi, NTSC, 29.97, 720x480, interlaced, 15 minutes or less duration.
Re-capturing original DV tapes to FCPX would be very time consuming. Don't know why but Vegas Pro 8 running on my older PC (Windows XP) refuses to render out to any of the QuickTime presets including uncompressed. Have Adobe Premiere Pro CS5.5, FCPX and Compressor running on new iMac.
My "trial and error" approach isn't working. Main problem seems to be with de-interlacing. Have converted .avi files to ProRes 422 using both Adobe Media Encoder and Apple Compressor. Interlacing "jaggies" are apparent with both when edited in FCPX. Jaggies can be eliminated using combinations of "progressive" field order and "blend frame" output option but this results in artifacts and/or noticeably soft image. Best results so far are by converting .avi to ProRes 422 using Adobe preset (lower field first) then using Apple Compressor's "Apple Device: SD for iPad …" output preset to convert the ProRes 422 to .m2v. Still seems a little fuzzy on iPad but maybe my eyes are just wearing out from all the hours I've spent on this problem.
Thanks in advance for your time and any help you can pass along. The more I work with FCPX, the better I llike it.

MPEG-4 isn't nearly enough information. There are many other factors that determine whether it will work in FCP. Many MPEG-4 files can be imported and optimized directly into the application.

  • What is the best way to work with avi-files?

    Hallo all,
I'm new to this forum so before asking my question I'd like to say some words about myself:
I'm not a native english speaker, so please excuse language mistakes I'll possibly make and feel free to ask if I'll write something which you don't understand due to this fact.
Half year ago I bought a HD Cam from Canon (Legria HF 200) which - in my opinion - has a good quality (good enough for my hobby films), and realized that cutting HD films on Windows would require a lot of expensive high end hardware. So I bought a MacBook and Final Cut Express - a decision I'm very happy with.
After the first disastrous tries to make a small clip I bought Tom Wolsky's "Editorial Workshop for FCE" and now I'm more happy than I was before (because I've seen that you're posting here: thanks for the great book!)
    But now to my question:
I have 9 old PAL DV tapes (containing family clips which I'd like to cut now) recorded with my old JVC, which has a FireWire port only. Unfortunately my MacBook doesn't have such, so I have to capture to DV avi using a PC with Pinnacle Studio.
1.) The avi files are very large (between 13 - 18 GB). Because I'm not able to recapture due to the missing FireWire port I'd like to archive the material on an HDD. How should I convert the AVI to make it smaller without a great loss of quality but keeping the ability to use it in FCE (especially when reconnecting after creating the subclips from the original)
2.) I'd like to keep the whole captured tape content as master clip and work with subclips from it. Yesterday I converted such an AVI to Film using QuickTime (the size didn't change noticable) and used the DV-Start/Stop detection. Unfortunately that didn't work correctly - some of the markers have been set in the middle of the shots instead as expected exactly between them. Should I do this on the original AVI file to make it work? And if, is it possible to reconnect the subclips created this way to a MOV created from the original AVI?
3.) On the PC I get an xml file containing the correct position data of the subclips (as timecode, if I remember correctly). Is it possibly, to use this data in FCE to mark subclips? Maybe by putting it manually into an xml project file or something similar?
4.) Or is there any other way to solve my problem?
Sorry for the big post and thanks in advance,
    André

You're welcome, and thank you for the reply.
    2) Yesterday I made the subclips with the In-Out Points and Command-U, the benefit is that I've seen the clip before naming it. Now I'm using markers, it's benefit is that I can write comment and (the later) clip name at once, the drawback is that I have to view to the next shot's beginning before knowing what the shot contains.
But now I found out that I can reconnect my clips independently to the format I converted the master clip to. I reconnected the media to the original AVI file and it worked, too! The more I work with, the more I'm sold on it... - although it doesn't seem to be able to read and use the date information within the DV AVI.
    1) Ok, I tried something similar within FCE. Just worked, but the file size still remains. Which codec settings should I use? Is the export to DV in MOV with a quality of 75% acceptable for both file size and quality? Or would be encoding as H.264 with best quality an option for archiving, knowing that I have to convert it back to DV if I (maybe) wan't to use it for editing later? Or anything else?
    Thank's in advance again,
    André

  • Can't make an AVI file

I'm trying to create an AVI file for someone, but I just can't seem to get it to work. I currently have it encoded in a MOV wrapper, and when I run it through MPEG Streamclip, it comes out with no audio, or, depending on the settings, QT complains that needs more codecs. I try to play it in Windows XP, and WMP can't handle it either.
So I tried Any Video Converter for Windows, and same types of problems: no video, or no audio, no either.
What's the simplest way to make an AVI file? I've tried encoding in MPEG4, h.264, ripping from the DVD with Handbrake and then converting with MPEG Streamclip, but nothing seems to work.

After doing a couple of quick tests ...
Taking a personal DVD that I built to my hard drive, and use specifically for tests like this, I loaded a small clip in MPEG Streamclip, then went to File > Export AVI.
From the drop menu at the top of the exporter window, I selected the Apple DV/DVCPRO - NTSC codec. Then Set the Quality to 100%, then exported. This first export had no playable audio in the AVI. So I looked at the Exporter window again, and checked the audio settings. By default, it selects MP3 audio, which apparently doesn't work, so I selected "Uncompressed" from the Sound drop menu, and tried the export again ... success. I now have a playable AVI with Video and Audio.

When I import a Quicktime AVI file into MPEG Streamclip to edit, there is no audio. Annoyingly, if I convert that AVI file into an MP4 file and then import it into Streamclip the audio is working; but the loss of image quality is not acceptable. Any suggestions? Thanks
