Quality of Clip captured using ProRes and clip converted to ProRes

I have captured the same clip in both HDV 1080160 and ProRes 422.
After editing the HDV version I export it using QT Conversion using the compression type "Apple ProRes." I then use the standard Compressor "DVD: Best Quality 90 minutes" preset unaltered. It looks fine in the Compressor Preview window. I then import the resulting files into DVDSP, and the quality is good.
After editing the ProRes version I export it using QT Movie using the current settings. I then use the standard Compressor "DVD: Best Quality 90 minutes" preset unaltered. It looks fine in the Compressor Preview window. I then import the resulting files into DVDSP, and the quality is bad.
Both clips are "ProRes" when imported into Compressor, and they both look fine in the Compressor preview window. The difference is that one was captured in HDV 1080i60 and converted to ProRes using QT, and one was captured in ProRes and exported as a QT Movie. Surprisingly, at least to me, the clip originally captured in HDV and then converted to ProRes looks much better than the clip originally captured in ProRes when they are imported into DVDSP. Both .mov files are compressed using the same Compressor preset, and the preset is unaltered.
I assumed the clip originally captured using the FCP ProRes preset would yield the better quality, but this isn't the case. I've tried capturing using ProRes 422 HQ, and the results are the same. I must be missing something, but so far I cannot explain it.
Thanks

I have tried at actual, full screen, using 1080p30 size from the original compressed to 4mbs (something my system can handle without blinking), 720p30, etc. etc. etc.  Nothing stops the jumps. Even the activity monitor shows only 5%-15% processing being used by QT and/or FCP.
I plan to pull my old G5 out of the closet, it runs 10.6.8 and is still rock solid for video editing in FCP7.  If it plays smooth on that 8 year old system then I know it's Mavericks. I'll try that tonight. It floors me though why the original 1080p30 will playback perfect via FCP and Motu, but once I turn of external monitoring and just try to play it via the preview monitor it is jumpy as **** and then the exported file does the same thing.  So strange.  I even deleted prefences of FCP and that does help with screen playback initially, but it always gets jumps in it after playing for a while.
I knew I should not have started using Mavericks and I HATE FCP10.

  • Full bandwidth IQ capture using 5600 and 5122e

    Hi
I have a PXI 5600 downconverter and a PXI 5122e digitizer. I want to capture 1 second of IQ data at 50MSs-1. I have sorted out the stream-to-disk part of the problem via a rather handy VI and have my large binary data file consisting of 1 sec of 50MSs-1 IF data with a bandwidth of 20MHZ (centred on 944 MHz for those who are particularly interested). The problem is I can't use the MT Convert IF to IQ VI because my controller (dual core, 1 Gig RAM) runs out of memory whenever I try to use that VI with such large data files. I just want to convert the entire IF sequence to IQ; no filtering is required during the conversion stage, but it is vital that I maintain the full bandwidth. I presume a simple IF to IQ conversion is pretty simple, is there another VI I could use or can anyone suggest a simple and quick way to do it (I'm a labview novice).
    Cheers

Thanks for the help - I'm making some progress and am using that vi to
stream my data to disk already, but am having difficulty implementing a
hardware trigger to control the timing of data capture - I can see that
the current setup is to increment a read pointer, and I can't see an
easy way of implementing the hardware trigger. If I change the trigger
setup vi (marked "5") to accomodate my digital trigger, then also
change the niscope property node ("6a") from read pointer to trigger,
the stream to disk vi only appears to read the single element
corresponding to the trigger event. Is there someway to set it to only
start using the read pointer once the trigger has arrived?
By the way, on the topic of the stream to disk vis, I had to make a
tweak to get it to actually read all the data out from the queue - the
current setup within the consumer loop is to stop on an error or
complete acquistion from the digitiser, however this leaves any data
still in the queue. I added a check that the number of elements in the
queue is zero AND the acquisition has completed in order to actually
    read out the full queue.

  • What's the quality of video capture using toast 11?

I just purchased Toast 11 pro and I don't see any mention of controlling, previewing and capturing video from a video camera.
The reason I would like this feature is that iMovie, while it controls the video camera, it doesn't play the sound when previewing the mini DV tape when capturing. I have to listen for sound through the camera.
It does keep mentioning that it converts video to "DVD". I think that's a compressed version and not the best quicktime quality.
I would like to capture video at the highest quality and later, step down the quality to the internet, etc.
Thank you for any help  in advance-j

  • Using 1080i and 720p footage for theatrical projection

The 1080i footage was captured with AIC and the 720p with prorez 422. Can anyone tell me the best sequence settings for highest quality output (through DVI port at theatre) and for reduced rendering times?
Should the clips from one or the other be rendered and/or exported with certain sequence settings to better match? Any significant loss with this?
I also have to make SD dvds, but that's not a pressing concern.
The 1080i (Sony V1u) footage could be recaptured, but only if a significant quality improvement could be made another way. The camera was rented.
I've spent hours researching this with little results. To say I would appreciate any help would be a tremendous understatement!

The various HD files are send to me on a drive from the producer, so, they're in the system as HD. It seems that If I build an intro in HD using the native files, the nest that into the SD sequence, I'd have less rendering. However, I'll have mostly 4:3 screen ration with a letterboxed intro to the older clips. Does going from letterboxed video to 4:3 video bother anybody? Is it considered OK? I see it on the news, but not in regular programming.

  • Cannot capture using log & transfer because warning message

    Hi,
I recently switched cameras - from using a Canon Mini DV ZR 900 to a Panasonic SDR-H85. Of course when I plug in the new camera to the computer via USB, FCE4 doesn't recognize it because it's AVCHD. The media (video clips & stills) is transferred anyway via Adobe Bridge and stored in a designated folder on my hard drive. I then converted the video clips from .MOD to .MOV with MPEG Streamclip. The converted clips are saved in a different folder. I also did the easy set up changing the format to Apple Intermediate Codec and use to AVCHD 1440X1080i60. So then I start a new project and try to do log and transfer but when I try to add the folder containing the converted clips, I get a warning window that says that the folder contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure and to please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media. Can someone please tell me what is wrong or what I'm missing? I need to have a way to identify and organize these clips. Thanks!

Okay, as soon as I get my next check. Judging by your response and what I read on the Apple site, that will solve my problem? I sure hope so. One of the reasons I switched from recording to tape to hard drive is because an Apple Store techie assured me it would be much easier capturing using log and transfer rather than the long drawn out process I was using with tape (making subclips, etc.). So I was pretty upset to encounter this obstacle. I wasn't warned about the perils of AVCHD, and reading the process in your book it didn't seem like it should have been a problem anyway. So I'm still quite confused. But that's okay. I'll be happy enough just to have something working finally! Thanks

  • How to capture using Pinnacle 700-USB Analog to Digital (USB)?

I have a Pinnacle 700-USB Analog to Digital converter which inputs Composite and L+R Audio and outputs a Digital signal through USB.
I'm using this to digitize VHS tapes.
I am trying out different Video Editing sw including Adobe Elements 7. Others like Pinnacle Studio 12 and Corel Video Studio 12 can import from this USB-device. It doesn't seem to be possible using Adobe Elements 7.
I've looked at the page http://help.adobe.com/en_US/PremiereElements/7.0/WS51F6C811-8B79-4c26-B4B9-24C0919182B6.ht ml
It mentions at the end "Note: If you capture using an AV DV converter, you might need to capture without using device control."
    1) What does the last Note mean? Which device control?
    2) Are there any possibility of this working? What should I try to play with?

My Pinnacle Dv500 came bundled with Premiere 6.0 which I updated to 6.02... and I also updated the Dv500 driver software from the V3 to V4.5a so it would save in "standard" DV AVI Type 2 48khz files, instead of the ones that required the Dv500 codec to edit
When I bought a new computer and started using WinXp instead of the Win2000 that came with my Alienware Pentium3, I could never get Premiere 6 to work... would start, flash a screen or two, and then just go away
I then bought Scenalyzer, since it was compatible with the Dv500 (still had to have P6 and Dv500 drivers installed) but it turned out to be very FRAGILE as any slightest glitch on the tape would stop the program... and since some of what I'm doing is capturing my OLD library of VHS tapes, that simply wouldn't do
My current solution is a dual boot drive with Win2k/WinXp
Premiere 6 captures EVERYTHING in the Win2k partition... files saved to 2nd drive... and then I use PProCS3/Encore3 for editing and DVD creation
Just a "bit" of a hassle to have to restart between capture & edit/dvd... but much better than Scenalyzer stopping every time an old movie hit a rough spot in the tape... rough spots that capture just fine with P6

  • Freeze up during clip capture with random change of in and out points

Having BIG problems capturing DV footage which began late last Fall. While performing a capture (assigned clips) footage would go down for a few seconds then would freeze (picture only, the audio continued) then after several seconds the picture would "catch up" and continue.
Found a solution here in the FCP forum where I had my firewire drives "ignored" by SPOTLIGHT by listing them in the privacy selection. Worked and moved on.
I have a project now where the problem has come up again. Once again during a clip capture it did what it did before - but now it ignores the assigned in point (audio but no video and almost consistently delaying it by 9 seconds into the capture) then freezes (at the assigned outpoint - sometimes) then continues to play on (audio only) then resumes (again catching up) then stops announcing a SUCCESSFUL CAPTURE. When the clip is selected to preview it plays back from the incorrect in point, freezes, then plays until the catch up - with now the audio out of sync. More craziness because now the log information now has changed: the MEDIA START & END information is not what was inputed so the DURATION TIME is now different and sometimes it adds a MARK OUT point (!?). I rarely use the CAPTURE NOW function but even trying that the footage still freezes up and goes out of sync.
I worked the SPOTLIGHT routine again with no change. Have completely optimized my system drive and external hard drives using DISKWARRIOR 4.1
I accept all the auto software up dates that come through UPDATER and see that I received a updated Quicktime version 7.5 on 13 June 08. I also noticed that I don't have CLASSIC OS 9 supported and seemed to have read here about something about FIREWIRE DRIVERS that maybe missing?
Was thinking of upgrading to 10.5 to see if that helps - but unsure about my FCP version/compatability...
So, here I sit frustrated since I have used FCP (which I LOVE) for quite a few years with great success - this is crazy! OF course, I have a project which deadline is looming!
    Any ideas?
    Much appreciation..
    Here's my computer stats:
    G4 Powerbook
    OS 10.4.11
    FCP 5.0.4
    QT 7.5
    Sony DSR-11 recorder/player
4-Firewire Drives with 20gigs of space available

So far have done a workaround to digitize my DV elements through iMovie. Not pretty. I string together the selected/import clips (in this case from interviews), assemble them in sequential order on the time line with small breaks of black in between, then export the timeline as DVCPRO/DV-NTSC quicktime file. Take that file into my FCP then segment out the clips on the time line, make each segment an independent clip so that I can name them. Not pretty but it works - miss having the logging data going through FCP log and capture.
Still waiting for any other solution to my situation - thanks!

  • How to get a 1080p clip into NTSC SD and still keep decent quality ?

I have this clip* that I want to eventually convert down into NTSC SD 4:3.
I am losing sharpness and this is probably from converting it from progressive to interlaced.
Anyone got any advice on how I can not lose so much sharpness and overall quality in my conversion?
To complicate matters slightly, I am exporting it from a MAC Final Cut to Premiere Cs6 which seems not to handle apple formats as nicely as native windows formats. :s

  • Capture a tape and separate clips

I am new to Final Cut Express 4 but I have had extensive experience with various Premier Elements, including PE7 as well as with WideStudio 10 & 11. Notwithstanding all that I cannot find out how to capture the DV tape from my camcorder (Sony DCR-HC40E) so that each 'clip' is separated. In the other products above, once you have clicked to separate clips, (by time-codes) they were all captured and recorded as separate clips. In FCE I tried capturing with Batch Capture but that did not work. Can someone please help me as to what i need to do?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi Meg The Dog
thanks for your suggestion. I did read Page 192 but was not very clear to me. Do I take it that first I have to capture the entire tape in one 'hit' and then segregate the tape into clips? With other programs I used, the 'capture' itself segregated and recorded each clip as it was recording/capturing the tape. The 'segregation' was based on each clip's time code. Is that not the case with FCE 4? Does that mean that I cannot 'capture' all my clips on a tape in one hit as i used to? Or have I misunderstood you response?
    Thanks again

  • Clip Settings Audio Log and Capture

Whenever I go to capture video from my AJA connected to our DigiBeta deck using Log and Capture, I have to uncheck 14 of the 16 audio tracks turned on under Clip Settings, as I only need two tracks. This seems to be the default audio capture setting. Is there any way to change it to two tracks as the default?

I have this exact same question, only with a Black Magic Deck Link card.

  • Is there a way to import clips from AVCHD folders I have copied from my camcorder to my hard disk? With FCE I could import these clips using log and transfer.

In FCP-X is there a way to import AVCHD clips from an AVCHD file folder I have copied from my Canon hard disk camcorder to my iMac hard disk?  With FCE I used log and transfer with no problem; but, FCP-X doesn't import them. It will import AIC files that have been created in FCE from the original AVCHD files.  If FCP-X will not import these files directly from the copied AVCHD folder, is there a workaround using other software to convert the files? For example, Compressor? (Canon does not provide any AVCHD conversion software for OSX).

    Hi jphil and Tom
I have exactly the same problem but the answer you (Tom) provided did not help in my case. Trying to "Import ->From Camera" and pointing to the AVCHD folder yields the error message: "(Folder) contains unsupported files or has invalid directory structure."
    Folder structure is
    AVCHD
         BDMV
              CLIPINF
                   .CPI files
              Index.bdm
              Movieobj.bdm

         3 files (.bnp, .inp, .int)
    DCIM
         101MSDCF
              empty
         MODELCFG.IND (file)
My question is: Is that not a "camera archive" of the type you talked about in the thread? Is it on principle not possible to import the files in that format/directory structure? If not, since the shots were not taken by myself, what should I ask the guy who shot the movies to give me to be able to work with them in FC?
I work with a brand new Final Cut Pro X 10.0.4 (still very clumsy with it) on an iMac 11,3 with MacOS 10.6.8.
I downloaded the latest version of codec updates from the Apple support site but no difference.
