Quality of Elgato TV signal on my Mac

Sorry, this isn't directly an Apple TV question but I figure people here will know...
I'm using the Elgato Hybrid to receive TV signal on my Mac and while it is working, the quality of the video isn't good. I've tried adjusting all the software settings, but it looks considerably worse than my (old) TV and doesn't seem to match the great comments this product has gotten on website reviews. It's not stuttering (the video is smooth) but it is grainy and not sharp - like it's low resolution. Something is wrong; is there a way to figure out whether I am in fact getting all the performance out of this (compare it somehow to the pictures you guys get)? What are factors that impact quality? I'm in North America, using Comcast coax cable with a 17" Titanium laptop running 10.4.11.
Also, I have Comcast cable - if I switch to an "Eye TV 250 Plus" instead of the Hybrid, can I get the HD channels, and in that case, will the quality be even better (larger window, sharper image)? In that case, do I need a cable box from Comcast to access the high-number HD channels (830 etc.)? If so, how will the Eye TV 250 Plus change the channels on the cable box, and can I pick up the right piece of hardware somewhere (on-line?) or is Comcast the best place to go? Assuming getting the HD channels will improve the image further, what's the minimal hardware I need to get the channel 800's feed into the Eye TV 250 Plus (I think the Hybrid doesn't do HD TV)?

some more dumb questions before I take the plunge and buy goods
I want to buy a "monitor quality" TV - Elgato [cost $150 and can be used on analogue / digital / even Fox] seems to be the simple key to turning a good monitor into an even better TV [2 meet the eye - the Apple 30" and/or the Dell 30" have resolutions of 2560 X 1600 - not sure what these numbers read but they look good, relevant to the best TV in that size
Next problem: to run a stand alone monitor as a TV [in my place on a kitchen wall - hence need it more as a TV rather than as a computer but I can see where a computer could be useful] using Elgato it will need to be connected to a mac computer => if this is correct what is the cheapest way forward
Solution, possible => could my imac run en external monitor at a distance [upstairs => downstairs via wireless or cable]
Hope you can help

  • Intermittent HDMI signal on my Mac Pro late 2013

Brand new Mac Pro. Used for short periods of time for a week with no problems. After these few days, during a little bit longer session of work, I got display problems. Intermittent output signal by HDMI cable with image disappearing from monitor and coming back for some times. Problem occurred both in 720P and 1080i mode. The problem appeared and disappeared for several times. During one of this occasions also some bad green pixel remained stuck on the display.
Left the Mac on for all the night, this morning I do not notice any problem. Does anyone knows which kind of problem I got??
It seems to be a graphic card problem isn't it??
    Thanks for help to everyone.
    System: Mac Pro late 2013 - 6-core - 32 Gb ram - 512 Gb HD - FirePro D500 3 GB - Mavericks 10.9.5

    Nothing connected to Thunderbolt ports.
Do I need to to reset SMC and PRAM anyway??
The Mac is connected to the Tv/monitor through my Bose LifeStyle.
Bose LS is setted to 1080i resolution and upscales the signal of the mac when in 720p.
Already tried at 1080i on 1080i and changed HDMI plug but problem shortly occurred.
Same device used in tha same way for years with Mini Mac without problems.
Is it possible there is some conflict between output of the Mac PRO HDMI and Bose LS??

  • I do all the steps to set wirelessly my TC but when i do my network can't find it. i don't have a modem near by but i have good signal to the mac. what am i doing wrong?

i do all the steps to set wirelessly my TC but when i do my network can't find it. i don't have a modem near by but i have good signal to the mac. what am i doing wrong?

Since you mention that the "modem" (which I'm guessing is a wireless router) is not close to the Time Capsule, I'm guessing a second time when I ask if  you are trying to configure the Time Capsule to "join" your network using wireless only.
    Is that correct?

  • Toshiba 32C120U "no video signal" from my Mac Mini using HDMI to HDMI.

My Toshiba 32" 32C120U is not getting video signal from my Mac Mini. I bought the Mini for my son and this is his TV. I have hooked up the Mini to my older 22" Toshiba and my 56" Samsung with the same HDMI cable and it works great on both. What the heck is wrong with my son's 32" Toshiba? I did update the firmware on the TV and the Mac Mini has been completely updated as well.
I have also tried both HDMI 1 and HDMI 2 ports with his Xbox with success, so both ports work. I have also tried both ports with the Mac Mini and there is "no video signal" on both ports. I noticed that when I hooked up the Mini to the other TVs it automatically selects the best video setting, so there is obviously some communication that happens between the Mini and TV, but that is not happening with my son's TV.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    John

I solved my issue . . . returned the Toshiba for an Insignia . . works great.

  • HT4628 My ipad and iphone connect and recognize wifi signal, but my mac pro running 10.6.8 does not  recognize or list the wiifi signal as option, any ideas?

    Hi,
In Austria, iphone and ipad "see" and connect to wifi signal no problem but mac pro in same room will not even allow me to choose the same wifi signal.  It seems almost blocked.  Havectried everything it seems by restarting, deleting preferred accoints, etc.  software is updated but running osx 10.6.8
    Thanks for any help!

    Try the basics first:
Change your router channel number.  Most times this works & is all you have to do.
Disconnect & reconnect your modem.  unplug it for about 10 seconds.  Plug it back in.  Do the same for Apple’s routers.  Wait for everything to reboot.
    System Preferences>Network
    Click the Assist Me button.
In the next window that pops up, click the Diagnostic button & do the necessary.

  • Wireless range extender or signal booster for Mac OS 10.9 ?

Hi, I have a new iMac 21.5 in, running OS 10.9.5. I have tons of storage capacity, 8 GB memory, and its very fast.
    I have two questions:
1.the little one is, why does this message pop up sometimes on this site:
" ! You are not allowed to create or update this content." ? When that happens, I see no explanation to help me fix the problem!
    2. The bigger question I have is:
can anyone suggest a device I can purchase that would strengthen my land's wireless signal so i have decent internet?
I am renting one of 13 cottages on a small parcel of land, and mine is the last in a string of renters all sharing the same wireless signal! So I get the last dregs after everyone else's gaming, streaming, etc etc.
It would need to have a working driver for Mac OS 10.9 available for it, as I am currently running 10.9.5, and would like to continue upgrading the OS software whenever it comes available.
I know hardly anything about how all that internet config stuff works, and I don't even know exactly what i should be looking for— extender? booster? adapter? etc….
But I need something soon, as right now my hands are tied, and I can only do anything at all on my old windows PC!
    Thanks for any advice!!

Extending a bad signal will give you a bad signal.
If the cottages share electrical power you could try powerline adaptors. Otherwise run cables.

  • No signal error with mac mini to acer monitor

  • Get the blue screen but the TV doesnt find the signal from my mac via hdmi

Before my mac could connect to my TV Samsungs LE32B350 without any problem, but now it just keep saying no signal from the tv. I get a blue screen when I connect the hdmi on the laptop for one sec then nothing happens. I have tried search for more screens but aint finding anything.
    Please help me

Unfortunately older G4 minis are very touchy about certain hi-res monitors when run from DVI. Hi-res in this case means any monitor whose resolution causes the pixel clock to be above 135 MHz. It is normally the case that 1680 x 1050 timing will have a pixel clock above 135 MHz, although there is no way to observe that directly from within OS X.
There are only two known work-arounds for the issue. One is to run the monitor over a VGA interface. The other is to use a program like SwitchRes X to lower the pixel clock below 135 MHz. If you choose to do the latter, write back if you'd like some guidance on how to do that.

  • When I am using powerpoint, if I linger too long on a slide the projector looses the signal from my mac. How do I stop this?

I have a MacBook Pro with MacOX version 10.6.8
When I give a powerpoint presentation, if I linger too long on a slide, the projector looses the signal, moves to a grey screen and scrolls through its menu.
I have tried lengthening the time my Mac has before it goes to a screen saver.  It is not that.  Does anyone know how to keep this from happening?
It has happened with multiple projectors.

  • Faded signal on one Mac but not the other

I've had my AX for several months and it's been flawless, throughout my apartment. In the past week, my MacPro desktop has had (usually) a very bad signal, while my old G4 iBook continues to have a strong signal wherever it is in the apartment, including sitting on the desk beside the Intel box that can't seem to get (or keep) a strong signal.
If I open the Airport Utility on the MacPro and kind of run it through a few paces (like scanning for AX's), the signal strength on the Pro will sometimes bump up for 30 seconds or so, but it invariably sinks back soon thereafter.
The AX is in the living room (just one wall dividing) plugged in near the TV, which has satellite coming in. I've read that satellite cables can be a problem, but nothing's changed in that setup, to explain the change in performance. And, again, if it's interference, why isn't it affecting the laptop?
    Any thoughts appreciated.

No guaranteed advice, just some things to consider, things to try, and things to be aware of:
    - The iBook is famous for good AirPort reception because of its plastic case.
    - How close is your equipment to other apartments? It may be that a neighbor has acquired something that interferes with your system.
    - You might try (a) changing the channel of your AX or (b) engaging "Interference Robustness", although I've seen cases where this latter option did more harm than good.
    - Could the AirPort antenna of your Mac Pro have become dislodged?
    - Is it possible for you to move your MacPro (temporarily?) so that it's next to the AX so that you can investigate whether this improved the signal strength?

  • Unable to change screen quality when accessing Window machine FROM my Mac

    Hi there,
I've been playing around with a copy of Apple Remote Desktop 3.1 and I'm very happy with the results when connecting to a Mac Server from my MacBook. We have quite a slow line so I use the sceen adjuster on the top-right corner of the screen to make the remote screen black & white to speed up the connection. I have another server here which is Windows server running RealVNC. When I connect to that machine and try changing the screen quality to black & white, it does nothing Can anyone change the screen quality when connect to a Windows machine from a Mac running Remote Desktop? If so, could you tell me your setup please?

    Desktop   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

mythril_knight, Welcome to the discussion area!
Ensure that your DSL modem is connected to the WAN port on the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS).
Does your ISP require PPPoE? If so enable PPPoE on the AEBS but DISABLE PPPoE on your computer.

  • Does an AE connect to my router's wifi signal or my Mac's?

My Mac is connected to my router via a DLAN device for a solid network connection, but my AEs are flaky - should I try and extend the Mac wifi signal with the AEs (and can I connect to AirTunes at the same time), or should I try and extend the router wifi?  Not really sure how this all works, sorry if a really stupid question!

There are a number of DLAN devices, but I am going to assume that you are using a Powerline-like device to connect your Mac back to your router. As you know Powerline devices are used to create a pseudo Ethernet connection using your home's electrical wiring. If this is what you are referring to, then you can share this connection via the Mac's wireless adapter. However, you cannot extend this wireless network with an AirPort base station.
For iTunes streaming, you need either a wired or wireless network for the iTunes host to stream to an AirPlay speaker. That speaker could be an AirPort Express base station, Apple TV, or a device that supports AirPlay.

  • I need to reset my time capsule/airport every day - time capsule has green light but I don't see any wifi signal on my mac and other computers.

as many of you do, I use time capsule as airport, too...
It worked fine for 6 months or so after I bought the new time capsule. (I bought it in September 2012.)
Since the beginning of this year, I had to reset, and power off and plug it in almost every week, then now I need to reset and power off and back on again every day...
When I first set up the time capsule, I followed the instruction with the manual.
But, now I am so lost and don't want to reset every day for wifi connection.
Anyone has problem like me or knows how to solve this issue?
    Please help..
I have MacBook Pro OS X 10.8.4 & my roommates have PCs. (just in case if it helps...)

For PC it is important the wireless has names that are compatible.. short.. like 10 characters.. but 2-20 is fine. no spaces.. and pure alphanumeric.
Use WPA2 personal only.. with pure alphanumeric password .. again 10-20 characters should be fine.
The latest firmware is a dud. Go back to 7.6.1
Open the airport utility.. click on the TC and holding the option key click the actual version number..
Go back to 7.6.1 is simple.. just select it and away it will go.. ignore future requests for upgrade.. you can also tell the utility not to check weekly for updates. You will need 5.6 utility for this I think..
    So do the firmware downgrade.
Then do a factory reset and follow the name information above.. for TC name as well btw.. wireless name/s and disk share name.. which by default is data and that is fine.
    So some instructions in...
    The Factory Reset.
    Power down the TC.
Hold in reset. and keep holding it in. Be Gentle! It is a tiny surface mount switch with a plastic lever.. Attempting to push it out the other side of the TC will not make the switch turn on better.
(I fix TC and have several reset levers bent over and jammed or broken off).
Power on the TC.. remember with the reset held in.. this needs three arms.. a friend or power switch you can get to with your feet..
Keep holding in reset for about 10sec until the front LED flashes rapidly.
Release reset and wait .. the boot will be slow as it deletes previous setting.. only from router side and pulls out the factory defaults. No files are deleted on the hard disk.. but the name of the TC may change.
How to load 5.6 into ML.
    1. Download 5.6 for Lion.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
Click to open the dmg but do not attempt to install the pkg.. it won't work anyway.
Leave the package open on the desktop so you can see the file. AirportUtility56.pkg
    2. Download and install unpkg.
    http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg on the desktop.. If your Mac refuses to run the software, because it wasn’t downloaded from the Apple store, go to security in preferences and allow other software to work.. this is limitation of trade methinks. You can set back later if you like.
Now drag the AirPortUtility56.pkg file over to unpkg.. and it will create a new directory of the same name on the desktop.. in finder, open the new directory, drill down.. applications, utilities .. there lo and behold is Airport utility 5.6 .. drag it to your main utilities directory or just run it from current location.
You cannot uninstall version 6 (now 6.3 if you updated) so don't try.. and you cannot or should not run them both at the same time.. although I have had no problems when doing so.
You can also load airport utility into a pc and get access to all the settings.  Untick the box for firmware updates.. it will still bug you occasionally.. regardless of the setting.. just ignore it..
You might still need to do the occasional reboot of the TC as well.

  • Strange video Quality drop on PC when compared to Mac

    Hi everyone,
I've been having a strange problem with quicktime recently on my pc.
I encoded video footage using Episode on a mac Xserve server here at work, the output was simple DV Pal .mov's that looks great on the mac, but when I play them on my PC they look strangely low res (incredibly low res) despite the fact that they look fine on the mac.
Does anyone have a clue as to why this is? the version of quicktime on my PC is quicktime 7

Why is it that commercial 'hollywood' SD are still miles apart from my 'home made' version?
Because they use super-expensive hardware compression.
Still, I make DVDs that look almost exactly like the output from Pr using my Kona card.
I wonder if you're ending up with double-compression on your DVD.  And maybe I'm confused here, but it sounds like you're using Toast and Encore, and I see no reason for that, if so.
There are a few ways to get to DVD from Pr.  The simplest may be just to send your Pr project to Encore, using Dynamic Link.  That will ensure you're only compressing once.
Another is to export from Pr or AME using a DVD preset, and when you take the resulting MPEG2 to Encore, be sure your clips are set to "Don't transcode."  And use the comparable strategy for BR.
CBR at 8 should yield you stunning looking DVDs.
