Quality problems when burning 25fps as NTSC

I have a film that was shot on 24fps - transferred to 25fps and that I now want to make NTSC dvd copies of. They come out looking not great when I tried. I export them using uncompressed 8-bit 25fps and pal 720x526 in the quicktime conversion from final cut and when I test the film in Quicktime it looks good. It is in the creating the DVD it gets either striped or pixelated in places. Is it cause i export it as pal and then burn it as NTSC? I tried exporting as NTSC in final cut but that didn't look good either. I'm a little green to DVD studio pro and post over all... and could use some pointers. Thank you!

NTSC is generally 29.97 fps. 24 fps (23.98) usually converts neatly to 29.97 via a process know as 3:2 pulldown. It sounds as if you adding unnecessary back-and-forth conversion of your frame rate by converting from 24 to 25 (PAL) to 30 (NTSC)
If the only master you have to work from is already PAL - you have two options:
Standards conversion will convert the frame rate form 25 to 30, but done right, it should create new frames by interpolation and frame blending. If you drop a PAL clip right into an NTSC sequence, FCP will usually create the new frames by simply duplicating frames, giving you motion a stuttery look. You can use Compressor to do a better job of frame rate conversion by turning on the frame controls.
Re-conforming is the process of changing the frame rate without interpolating or creating new frames. This was often used by digital filmmakers who would shoot in PAL, then reconform the frame rate to 24 to create a film version. In this case, the playback winds up a bit slower, and there is usually a corresponding pitch shift in the audio. You can use Cinema Tools to do this. If you onlny have a progressive PAL master to work with, you may want to consider this method to get back to 24fps, but I would not reconform to 30fps. You can take a 24p piece of media and encode it directly as such to NTSC video for DVD, and it's not necessary to convert to 30fps.
Ideally, however, I would try to get a 24p or ntsc version of the master and recapture from that to avoid having to go through the reconversion from PAL.
Hope this helps -

  • Quality problems when burning a dvd with Premier Elements 11

I purchased a while ago, but just recently installed Premier Elements 11.  I previously had 9 and 10.  11 was great until I burned to a disc.  The quality is very substandard. Have you come up with a fix for this?  I have read many other complaints about the quality of burning.
Until I can get a fix, I have uninstalled 11 and gone back to version 10.

    Irene
Thanks for reporting on your results. Much appreciated.
Do you have the opportunity to record 1080p instead of 1080i? If so, we would be interested in the results. But, for now, just some miscellaneous comments.
    1. What are you using to apply the pan and zoom effect?
    Pan and Zoom Tool
Keyframing of the Motion Position property for Pan and Motion Scale property for Zoom
Presets under fx Effect/Presets for pan or zoom.
Are you applying the same pan and zoom effect to each of the photos?
If so (an not using the Pan and Zoom Tool),
Pan and zoom one photo, then copy/paste effects and adjustments for a group selection of the rest.
If using the Pan and Zoom Tool, then consider
ATR Premiere Elements Troubleshooting: PE11: Pan & Zoom Tool, More Than One Photo at a Time
This is acceptable for a few photos, but the increased duration that it will add to the Timeline content may make it prohibitive.

  • Multiplexing problems when burning

Using iDVD to burn a DVD, I get a message at the end of the process stating that there were multiplexing problems during burning. When I try to play the DVD, the introduction plays fine, but when I try to play any of the three movies, created in iMovie, I get a "not permitted" message and the movie does not play. I have burned the DVD twice and got the same result both times.
I have created several DVDs in the past, using iDVD, and did not have any problems. I have been using a LaCie DVD drive to burn my DVDs, since I do not have a superdrive on my iMac.
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.

I'd make sure the basics are covered.
Lots of memory helps; and you'll need 10-15 gigs of space on the hard drive for scratch space.
Buy good quality disks - I've seen recommendations for Maxell, Sony, Verbatim, TDK and a few others based on testing. I primarily use the first two and usually don't have trouble.
    Give yourself lots of time.
Turn off your screen savers and energy savers; don't let your hard drive go to sleep.
Get your computer healthy and ready for some heavy lifting. (video work could be the hardest job your computer can do) MacJanitor followed by Apple's DiskUtility's Repair Permissions is my routine.
Most of the time iDVD is working, it is encoding (compressing) your video to fit on the DVD. Create an image .img file and use Toast or Disk Utility to burn it to disk. Burn slow (1 or 2x).
I keep my projects under 60 minutes (for highest resolution).
Try testers; you can use DVD-RW
I import into iDVD rather than export from iMovie (fewer errors).
    No other apps open.
If you use iDVD for burning the DVD (and don't make a disk image), don't quit iDVD even when the DVD is burned, until you've played the DVD in a regular player (it's much easier to burn another disk and check to see if the problem was a bad disk, than to go back through all that encoding again by quitting iDVD).

  • IDVD 3 calibration problems when burning

Help! I'm having calibration error messages when burning iDVD-R discs in iDVD 3. I've had success in the past with Maxell DVD-R 8X discs but other brands and other speeds won't work. I can't find Maxell DVD-R 8X discs anymore. Do I need to update the iDVD software? I'm at a loss to figure this one out.

    hi sue,
i purchased the verbatim dvd-r and burned 1 dvd successfully. unfortunately, it will not burn again and i am prompted with the same error message: Power calibration area error: (0x73, 0x03). what is weird is that when i tried to burn a .mov file using toast, i was prompted with an error similar to the idvd error (0x73, 0x03). Could this be a problem with both idvd and imovie? i am able to burn data onto dvds within toast, just not files that i have created using imovie and idvd. i hope this makes sense!

  • Quality problem when export to DV with QT

    Hello,
With Imovie 11, Mountain Lion, Imac 24"
When I export my movie with HD 1080 quality no problem,
When I export my movie with QT to DV, I have huge pixelisation on vertical line on the movie. When people move for example, their legs and arms got zebra movement.
That didn't happen before with 4/3 screen, looks like It's coming with HD 16/9 record.
    Any Idea ?

Running `pacman -R` without the -n switch will leave all of your configuration files alone and just remove the package files. In this case it might be helpful to remove anything you can without removing packages from the "base" group, to minimize conflicts. After successfully upgrading the remaining packages, run `pacman -S <packages>` to (re)install the newest version of the packages you removed. At least it has worked for me to avoid package conflicts in the past; your mileage may vary. See removing packages and pacman tips.
If all else fails, in theory you could run something like `pacman -r /mnt -R $(pacman -r /mnt -Q | cut -d ' ' -f 1)` from a live CD to remove all packages, then use pacstrap to reinstall them. Use this as a last resort and make a backup first!

  • Poor quality video when burning a DVD

    Hi All,
I have recently purchased & installed Premiere Elements 11 on my Windows 7 64bit Dell laptop. I found the tutorials very helpful and was able to successfully create my first project - importing a 46 minute AVCHD file4GB m2.ts shot on my Panasonic HC-V100 in Record Mode HG1920: 1920x1080 25f/s Audio 48kHz. When creating the project I selected: New Project>Change Settings>PAL>AVCHD>Full HD 1080i 25 andTicked ‘Force Selected Project Setting on this Project’ (I'm in the UK hence selecting PAL)
I added titles then created a menu and scenes using a still photo 2mb jpg 3456x2304 300dpi for the menu background. So far so good - really pleased with the results on screen. Next I selected Publish>Disc > selected AVCHD Add Name>Choose 1920x1080i>Burn to Folder. I then burned the BDMV Folder to DVD using the inbuilt DVD burner in my laptop.
This successfully produced a DVD with menus and titles which will play on my Blu-ray player. The quality of the video is excellent and I am delighted with the result however here is the first of the problems I'm hoping someone can help with: The background image on the menu is slightly blurred as are the menu/scene titles.
Next I wanted to produce a DVD for people who don't have a Blu-ray player & therefore need to play it on a normal DVD player. This is the second problem (and one I have seen mentioned elsewhere on the community). I published the project in a similar manner to the one above but with the following differences:
Burn to DVD Folder: Select 4.7>Type name>Browse to location. I now burn the VIDEO_TS folder to DVD, again using the the inbuilt DVD burner in my laptop however this time the result is very poor. The menu doesn't work and the quality of the video is unacceptable. Of course I understand that the result will be considerably lower quality than with the AVCHD version however this is not watchable.
(BTW, prior to purchasing Premiere Elements 11 I had been playing the video from my camera into a Sony RDR-HXD910 hard disc recorder then burning DVDs from that device using SP mode. This produced DVDs with perfectly acceptable quality so I must admit that I was hoping for similar results from Premiere Elements.)
I have read on the community that DVDStyler is a preferred method of burning DVDs however afer downloading it I failed to find a way of using it for simply burning my existing VIDEO_TS folder.
This is as far as I have got and now would really appreciate some help to point me in the right direction to be able to burn my project onto ordinary DVDs. I have tried to put as much information on the post as possible but I am new to video editing so have probably missed or not described something!
    Thanks in advance
    Simon

    ATR,
Thank you for helping me out.
    To answer your questions:
--Do you really need NTSC DVD-VIDEO standard 4:3 on DVD disc or is NTSC DVD-VIDEO widescreen 16:9 on DVD acceptable?
I was told that product specs require 4:3 aspect ratio for DVD.  (Unfortunately footage was all shot in 16:9 before I found out about the 4:3 finished requirement.)  I want to generate the highest IQ possible in this format.
    --Is your 1920 x 1080p 30 or 25 or something else?
All video was shot at 1920 x 1080p 60fps.  AVCHD.
Video Source Properties as obtained from the Timeline:
    Type: MPEG Movie
    Image Size: 1920x1080
    Frame Rate: 59.94
Source Audio Format: 48000Hz – compressed - Stero
Project Audio Format: 48000Hz – 32 bit floating point - Stereo
    Pixel Aspect Ratio: 1.0
--What exactly is set as the Premiere Elements project preset for the project that has this 1920 x 1080p footage on its Timeline?
    PROJECT SETTINGS
Editing Mode: AVCHD 1080p square pixel
    Timebase: 59.94 fps
    Frame Size: 1920x1080
    Pixel Aspec Ratio: Square (1.0)
    Fields: None (progressive scan)
    Display Fomat: 60fps Drop-Frame Timecode
Title Safe Area: 20% horizontal, 20% vertical
Action Safe Area: 10% horizontal, 10% vertical
    Audio Sample Rate: 48000Hz
    Display Format: Audio Sample
--When the project preset was set, did you use NTSC or PAL section in the new project dialog?
I didn't make any choices.  I didn't use the new project dialog.  I imported media and started working.  When I saved, I made no choices.  Since I'm in the US and bought this from Amazon, I assumed it was NTSC, and that appears to be the case.
    --Is your program version 12?
    Yes.
Motivated by a different thread regarding titles and 4:3, I did create a test "movie" (not DVD) at 4:3 and all the titles fit within the image area.  (I even made a point of inserting a couple of titles that ran outside the "safe" area in the PRE Titler; these also all fit on the image although they came closer to the edge.  Not crowded, but perhaps not as aesthetically pleasing as those that were created within the limits.

  • Sound problems when burning a film made in iMovie in iDVD

    PLEASE HELP!!!
I have upgraded to iLife 09 and for all the bad that people have to say, I actually like it a lot. Anyway, it gave me the encouragement I needed to play with some old home movies I had stored with the aim of producing DVDs to give to my friends, and hopefully showing off the slick production values I have come up with.
So after spending a week getting to grips with iMovie and editing an old holiday film with all the cuts, transitions, chapter markers and music etc that I wanted, I ended up with an hour long movie that I was happy with.
Then to iDVD. After trying out all sorts of ways to go from iMovie to iDVD to ensure the best quality, I have finally given up trying to replicate the on screen quality of the movie in iMovie with the finished DVD, and just opted for the easy to use 'share to iDVD' option. The quality is not great, but then the footage is old anyway so not too much of an issue.
Then I spend another few days playing with and learning iDVD and again end up with a finished product that I am happy with, with nice looking menu's and a slideshow etc.
So I come to burn the final DVD, for which I pick the 'Professional burn' option which takes 4 hours but I am happy to wait if it means the best quality possible, and my DVD is done.
I then play the DVD to discover my problem - the sound in the movie is not right. To explain further, in my movie I have reduced the sound of some of the film clips to nothing and placed music over the top. When played and previewed in iMovie it works fine - the music plays and the sound that is attached the the video does not. When previewed in iDVD it works fine - just as I had edited it in iMovie. But then when I burn the DVD, some of these sounds are present again which completely wastes all my hard work at the editing stage.
I have searched and searched for help on this but am unable to find any.
Sorry for the very long description and story behind my issue, but it is massively frustrating. Basically, at some point during the 'burn to DVD' stage in iDVD it decides to completely ignore most of the sound edits I have made on the movie in iMovie.
If anyone can help it would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks in advance.

Further to this, I have just sat and watched the whole final DVD on my TV and it would seem to be that the sound issues may be something to so with the transitions added in iMovie. Some of the sounds have even slipped in time! I get the sound from the next clip coming in early and then a blank patch of sound where it should be. All of this is always just before an iMovie transition.

  • Quality Loss when Burning to DVD

    Hello,
I have a DVD that we sell that has about 80 to 90 minutes of footage on it each week.  We can barely fit it on a DVD and when we do it gets pixellated and the quality looks bad. Can someone please give me some advice on how to limit this problem?  I see full Hollywood movies fit on 1 DVD all the time, am I doing something wrong?
    Thanks!
    Andy

    Hi Andy,
I also use the HD2SD methods and get superior results, but that workflow is not for the faint of heart. Once you learn the workflow its not bad, but perhaps not the best solution for high-volume production.
Let's look closer at your current workflow. You should be able to get good quality using Adobe for that shorter program length (I often go up to 2.5 hours using HD2SD).
What is your source? If 1080i (interlaced), that can be problematic. Besides scaling the video to SD, the interlacing gets weird at the same time. HD is Upper field, DVD is typically lower field.
As mentioned in the thread, do NOT export to H.264 as an intermediate codec, no reason to. From the Premiere timeline, use EXPORT and choose "MPEG-2 DVD" and then an appropriate preset such as "NTSC DVD Widescreen". You should manually set the bit rate and this formula will help. 560/minutes = bitrate, and just round down a little for safety margin. 560/90=6.22 so go with 6.0 or 6.1 and should be fine, or for the 80 minutes maybe 6.9 rate.
Two-pass VBR will help provide a better encode than CBR. Try something like 3 min, 6 avg/target, and 8 max.
If using the 1080i source, you can manually try setting the fields to Upper for the encode and see if that helps. If encoding from 1080p, then of course choose a Progressive DVD preset (no fields).
At the bottom of the encoder window, there is a check box for "Max Render Quality", always use that when scaling the output, such as HD to SD.
Import the resulting .m2v and .wav files into Encore and author. The video should NOT get transcoded. With your workflow, were you bringing the H.264 HD file into Encore and letting Encore transcode? Premiere/AME is said to do a better job, don't let Encore do it for you.
    Hope this helps

  • How can I avoid video quality loss when burning Canon FS100 footage to DVD?

When I put the footage onto iMovie it looked great, and then I sent it to iDVD to burn onto a disc. After I burned it to a DVD and watched it on my DVD player, I noticed that I lost a lot of the video quality (or at least it seemed). It looks a little fuzzy and seems like it could be much better considering how great it looks in iMovie. Is it just me or does sending it to iDVD make me lose video quality? What is another alternative so I don't lose the quality? I've heard that Wondershare is a good option and that you won't lose any quality burning it from there, is that true? What is my best alternative? A relatively expensive DVD burner? Thanks, any help is appreciated.

A good suggestion was made before me, but I have another twist on the matter.
From Wikipedia on DVD: "Although many resolutions and formats are supported, most consumer DVD Video discs use either 4:3 or anamorphic 16:9 aspect ratio MPEG-2 video, stored at a resolution of 720×480 (NTSC) or 720×576 (PAL) at 29.97, 25, or 23.976 FPS."
Notice that the resolution for a DVD is roughly 700x500, which when multiplied gives you 350,000 pixels per frame. Now compare that with the video resolution of the FS100, which I see on web pages (eg, on dabs.com) is 710,000 pixels per frame.
This means your camera records more quality than can fit on a DVD. Approximately twice as much information. This means half the information is lost during the conversion. That's why you notice a drop in quality. If you burned to a BluRay disk, you'd probably lose nothing, since they store more information per frame. So your alternative is to buy a BluRay burner and play it back on a BluRay drive.
Another alternative is to burn it to a DVD but not in a form that's playable by a DVD, just in a form thats readable and playable by a computer. You will lose no information that way, but it will be playable only in a computer.

  • Image quality problem when Printing Booklet to PDF

    Hi!
I've searched the entire web trying to find a working solution for my problem but I wasn't able to find anything...
I've created a A5 vertical page document in InDesign CS6, filled with High-Quality photographs. I now want to print it as a booklet (to a PDF file) so I can save it and print it in a professional establishment.
The problem is, when I do this, the image quality turns out terrible...
I've checked my Print Settings and I can't find anything wrong...
Setup - A4 horizontally, and Graphics - Images - Send Data - is set to All.
Is there anything else I can do/try? What can I be doing wrong?
Here is an image of my print settings:
When I export the document normally to PDF the image quality is fine, but it doesn't have the booklet layout which I need, it just exports single A5 pages one after the other. If I try to print this pdf as a booklet in Adobe Reader the same thing happens to the images, they loose quality.
    Please help!!
    Thanks : )

Hi! Thank you for your quick and helpful answer.
There's definetly something wrong with the PDF printer properties... It was on standard default, as you said... but it still didn't work when I changed it to press quality (also tried high-quality print), changed the dpi's and other few settings on the advanced preferences
My solution was to download a free-trial of a professional pdf editor/creator (Soda PDF) and print it to that program... but, of course, this is not a long-term solution...
I'll try and see if I can find any help in changing the settings to get the best quality in printing of the adobe acrobat program.
    Thanks!
p.s: I think I meant to say "graphic press" when I wrote professional establishment, I'm not sure how you say it in English.

  • Audio Problems when burning

I have tried making disc image, burning disc and the audio will pause for second several times in the play back. It does not do it when playing back in iDVD.
The slide show was started in iPhoto and sent to iDVD. I have started over several times and still same issue. Makes a bad impression and is really not useable for presentation.
I have 30 gigs free space, changed settings to Professional encoding and still same issue. I have no open apps, changed all energy settings and screen saver to never.
Any ideas, I am fresh out, never had this problem with previous version.
    Frustrated

    Andy,
This question is really in the wrong place - this is the iDVD '08 forum and not the iDVD 5 forum.
From the description of your problem using Toast, it sounds like you didn't actually export a DV video movie out of iMovie.
Export a DV video movie out of iMovie (it will run 13 GB per hour) and play it back with the QuickTime Player to see if the audio settings you made are really there. If this movie plays OK, you can bring IT into iDVD or Toast for turning it into a DVD.
If the DV video movie you created STILL has audio problems in the QuickTime Player, ask you question about THAT issue in the correct iMovie forum.

  • IMovie audio problems when burning in Toast 6

    Hi,
i've tried to burn an imovie project in idvd 5 but i get 'the error #-1 was reported' like most people have been and i've tried loads of things suggested to fix it with no joy.
I then sent the imovie project to toast titanium 6 where it burned fine. However, when i watched it i noticed that although toast had picked up all the audio (both dv audio and aiff), it did not pick up all the volume adjustments during the movie. how annoying! for example: i have an aiff clip that fades into a movie clip with the sound gradually going down but Toast picks up the sound staying at the same level. this also happens with volume adjustments in a DV file.
Any suggestions why this happens / how i can fix it?
    Cheers,

  • Quality problem when OLE linking a pdf

    Hi all
I'm trying to insert a pdf-file as an OLE object within Excel. The problem is, that the pdf will show up fine, but the quality will be really lousy (both on screen and when printed). When I open it in the Adobe Reader, it'll look just fine. I've tried all possible combinations of Excel 2000/2007 and Adobe Reader 6/7/8. Nothing varies at all.
Is there any secret setting I need to toggle in order to get it to work?
Thanks in advance for any pointers!

Hi I am going crazy trying to figure this out and I have watsed so much time already...HELP!!
I received a PDF drawing and I needed to add some things to it like desks and chairs, ect. Its basically a floor plan of an office building.
How do I copy or send to or transer to an excell spread sheet and still be able to use it the way that I need to?
I actually was able to cut and paste the PDF to my spread sheet and add the things I needed to but heres the problem. When I go to print my work out it does not print the PDF drawing at all.
So I end up with this page with only the things that I added and no drawing at all.
Is there a way to have everything printed out PDF along with my add ons?

the duration of the film is 74 mins. i tried it on best performance and best quality but still no luck
