  • Starting over: how do I restart my audio setup from scratch?

I've had JACK, Pulseaudio and ALSA on my desktop at one point or another and seem to be having real issues as of late (ex: VOIP, bluetooth headset works great for audio out, but mic volume stays maxed out and unusable... built-in audio mic works great, but speakers have static + echo effect... playing audio via MPD is fine, but doing anything with VLC locks the computer up... lastly, mplayer or any avriant of is completely unusable, but XBMC works just fine)... I just wanna remove all settings for audio, reboot, and redo it all from scratch... but wanna focus on removing the right things... any help is welcome...

    remove jack an pulseaudio. I only have alsa-{utils,oss}
    and the sound works flawless
and use alsamixer (in a terminal) to set the vol of all, if you want to save the current vol on reboots add @alsa to the daemons in /etc/rc.conf
    Good Luck.

  • U410 Rapid Start, Smart Response setup from scratch

    Hi!
I have a question about the built-in Intel's Rapid Start and Smart Response technology in my U410 notebook.
The problem is that I've managed to "reset" the SSD cache drive so the raid array and the partitions are lost.
I've tried to restore the drive structure by creating a 8GB hibernation partition, with diskaprt (on basic disk, create partition primary size=8192 id=84). After that the Rapid Start works fine. Next I've used the Intel Rapid Storage Manager utitlity to create the acceleration for a partition on the HDD. There were two option for that, the firts one is to use 18,6 GB for cacheing, the second one was to use the whole drive (max. 64GB). Chosing the second option did nothing exept throwing an error, the firts option created the cache array with the following structure:
    Array_0000:
    - Volume_001: 11GB (data)
    - Volume_002: 19GB (cache)
In the widows drive manager the hibernation partition appeard on Volume_001 with another unallocated 3GB partition.
The original setup was (without having the 3GB unallocated space):
    Array_0000:
    - Volume_001: 8GB (data)
    - Volume_002: 22GB (cache)
The question is, how can I create the original array structure, for using the two menitoned technoligies, without loosing 3GB caching space, filling the whole remaining space for caching?
I hope I was clear about the probelm  Any help appreaciaed!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Got some reply from Intel:
This cannot be done by the end-user with the current production version of the Intel® Rapid Storage Technology driver (I assume that they are using the 11.0 production version of Intel® Rapid Storage Technology driver).  This has been fixed in the next release version 11.5 (PV WW28 – 32).  The only option for end-user to reconfigure the SSD with cache + data is to select 18.6GB for the cache which will create 11GB for the data area of the SSD.  The correct sequence of steps for restoring the CacheSSD with the Intel® Rapid Start Technology partition:
    1.       Launch the Intel® RST GUI and click the ‘Acceleration’ button at the top of the GUI
    2.       Click Enable acceleration
    3.       Select the SSD and 18.6GB for the Cache size (this will create a cache volume size 18.6GB + data volume size 11GB)
    4.       Select the Acceleration mode (Maximized or Enhanced) and complete the Acceleration.
    5.       Once the Acceleration-enabling operation is complete you can partition any portion of the 11GB data volume for Intel® Rapid Start Technology
Note:  The user can select any size of the 11GB data volume that they wish for the Rapid Start partition.  Any space unused can be partitioned in Disk Manager for additional data storage space.  As far as performance, there should not be much difference if any between the cache size of 18.6GB and the original 22GB.

  • My ATV will no longer stay connected to WiFi. Every time I want to use it I have to setup the WiFi from scratch!!!

My ATV will no longer stay connected to my home WiFi network. Every single time I want to use it I need to set up WiFi from scratch all over again. I'm considering dumping it as my Roku box has no issues. I'm an Apple loyalist though and want the ATV for playing my large music collection.
    Any suggestions?

    It's a 1G ATV, 160Gig.
The wireless is an Access Point w/WPA encryption and all DHCP is done by a remote wired router in a closet. Resetting each has had no effect on it. I don't see a setting anywhere on my ATV that I can change to turn off periodic standby mode.
I actually replaced an Airport Extreme w/ this D Link AP & it's worked great for every other device. I had the exact same issue with the Airport Extreme although it seems like after the latest ATV SW upgrade, it does it every day. Previously it would only do it occasionally.

  • What is the impact of destroying and re-creating from scratch the Open Directory Master?

In order to try and solve some nasty issues hat I have since upgrading to OS X Server 3,0 I am considering completely destroying my OD Master and re-creating the users and groups from scratch. Before doing so (of course I will have multiple backups) I would like to understand:
    1.   When re-creating the users and groups is it sufficient to use the same ‘Unix’ groupid and userid numbers or do I also need to use the original GeneratedUIDs (is that even possible)? Are there any other aspects of the users/groups that I need to be sure to preserve?
    2.   Will there be any impact to services and their data from doing this? Specifically, I have users with data in Mail, Calendar, Contacts and the WiKi. Will they still be able to access their data after the OD destroy/re-create or is that data somehow tied to more than just the username (e.g. does it use the user/group UUID or indeed any other UUID from OD)?
    3.   Will there be any impact to OS X clients bound to the OD? Should I unbind them before destroying and re-bind them afterwards? Will there be any negative impact on the network users who log in via these systems (they all have ‘mobile’ accounts which do *not* sync to the server - all their data is local to the client)?
Thanks in advance for any advice especially from anyone who has gone through this process.
    Chris

    Hi Rob,
I have solevd my issue and I did not need to destroy / re-create the Open Directory. See my post here https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5785838 for all the gory details. The long and the short of it was that my problems all came from a point in the past when I changed the hostname of my server after I had created the Open Directory master. Seems like that is a very bad idea! Based on what I found it seems liek any small flaw in DNS forward and reverse name resolution can also cause similar issues. I don't knwo if either of thsoe may apply to your situation?
As part of troubleshooting my issue I actually created a 'replica' of my server setup on another machine includingthe OD and associated users and groups. What I found was that many services (certainly mail, calendar and contacts) depend completely on the OD users and groups UUIDS. So if you wish to preserve user's data across an OD destroy and re-create it is vital that you carefully note for each group its Unix GID and its OD UUID and for each user their Unix uid, primary group id and UUID. When you are re-creating your OD master, as you create each group, use Directory editor to change its UUID to the original value. Similarly for Users. If you don't then users will no longer have access to any existign Mail, Contacts or Calendar data afterwards!

  • Just got the iPhone6 and did the iCloud setup from a previous backup of my old iPhone5.  iPhone6 is now continuously trying to download the renweb app.  When I try to delete the renweb app, it will not delete.  How can I get rid of the app??

How can I delete the app off my phone without going through the entire setup of the new phone again?  App will not delete the normal way.  I hit delete and it just stays on the phone and tries to download over and over.

If it has a cloud icon it means its no longer on your device.  Tapping on the cloud will effectively reinstall the App from scratch to your device.
There is no way to remove it from the cloud because its not yours to remove from there. Its the general App repository, you are just given access to it to download content you've already purchased.

  • Thoroughly fed up and wanting to start from scratch

I am now thoroughly fed up trying to sort out Time Machine / Time Capsule problems that I want to start again from scratch. Does anyone know of a set of instructions to completely wipe a Time Capsule and clean out Time Machine so I can start again.
I have to say this is a real achilles heel product. I've not had problems like this since the bad old days when I wrestled with a Power Computing tower and OS 6/7 trying to find a system conflict with extensions manager. If I wanted to spend hours/days wading through tech forums and system logs trying to debug my computer, I'd have bought a PC. I think Mr Jobs had it right when he announced that the next major iteration of Mac OS would be focused solely on improvements and making things more stable - clearly he knew more than he was letting on. What happened to intuitive, user-friendly computing than allowed you to focus on doing work.
    Regards

You can reformat the hard disk in the Time Capsule.
Go to Airport Utility --> Manual Setup --> Disks --> Highlight "Time Capsule Disk" on the left --> Click "Erase" on the right.
Rename the disk and select the level secure erasure. You're done and ready to begin backing up again.
If you start running into error messages again fell free to let us know exactly what they say.
    Cheers!

  • How do I restart Time Machine back-up from scratch?

How do I restart Time Machine back-up from scratch?  I have a MacBook Air that was my wife's - now given to my daughter for school.  My wife never used Time Machine to back up (she simply copied files to an external drive), so before clearing her files off the Mac HD, I tried using Time Machine for the first time with an external HD.  However, the Time Machine back up repeatedly failed after about 2GB of 28GB of files. I manually copied my wife's 28GB of files to another external HD and deleted all the files off the Mac HD. I then reformatted the external Time Machine drive. But when I try to use Time Machine to back up the MacBook Air as it is now with my daughter's files on the Mac HD to the external TM drive, Time Machine acts as if the 28GB of my wife's deleted files are still on the Mac HD and fails back-up after counting to about 2GB, even though there aren't even 2GB of files on the Mac HD now and nothing on the external TM drive. I don't need to save any back-ups of how the MacBook used to be - I just need to start from scratch with how the computer is now.  Can anyone please tell me how to get Time Machine to think the MacBook is a brand new computer and act as if it's a first time ever back up?  I tried updating to Yosemite, and tried renaming the computer in System Preferences>Sharing, plus (as noted above) deleting all the old files off the Mac HD and reformatting the external Time Machine drive - none of that worked.  All I can do at the moment is manually copy my daughter's files to an external HD - very frustrating.

Hmmm.. Office is not hard to restore.
You have something major wrong (Yosemite being the primary one).
Do a verify of the source drive.. to do that you will need to boot to the recovery.. and run the disk utility from there.. it sounds like your main disk is corrupted.
Once that is complete, delete the current setup of TM and try again.. use the widget to find out why it is failing..
    See Troubleshooting.
    A1, A4 and A5 for further info.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
    Good luck with it..
I would also download carbon copy cloner.. it is $40, but you can use it free for a time.. forget if a week or a month??.. to try out.. and make a proper backup before you start.. CCC is far more reliable than TM.. and in fact you might decide to simply forget about TM if it works and pays the $40.. because you can produce a bootable clone on the external drive which is a heck of a lot easier to use than TM.

  • How to install Oracle RAC using 11gR2 on Win 7 32 bit from scratch?

    Hiii,
    I am a fresher and I have a win 7 system 32 bit with oracle 11gR2.
I want to install RAC using two or more servers but I dont know too much about it.
I tried to search on google but all they are giving information in pieces(for win 7) or about Linux(Please tell me why its all Linux everywhere not windows).
Please let me know if there any site where I can find step by step installation from scratch.
What are basic requirements(/software if needed).
    Thank you.

    Hi,
First of all forget about Windows!! Oracle is mainly designed for Linux systems. Oracle runs as real multi-process on Linux machines whereas on Windows it runs as a single process with multi-thread.
Memory usage - huge pages, single CPU run queue, dnfs, storage systems... etc. lots of concepts exists.
Besides Windows is one of the most poorly designed operating systems, you should use it only to watch cute kitten movies on youtube... Believe me, you wouldn't want to learn Oracle on Windows...
So, install virtualbox and then setup Oracle Enterprise Linux on it as a first step... By the way you have to deal with DNS server for release 11.X, RAC, you may start with 10g for now.
ORACLE-BASE has all the installation steps explained detailly, search for "oracle base rac install" on google.
I also explained on my blog, but it is a little bit advanced installation using ZFS storage simulator. DNS server installation is also explained:  http://ilkertaysi.com/2013/11/11/oracle-rac-installation-with-zfs-storage/

  • "Bad quality received from network module."

My computer has 2 Fieldpoint ethernet banks setup to allow Lookout to interface with mulitple HW peripherals.  Lookout launches automatically when the computer starts up.  And after everything is loaded, one of the ethernet banks will almost immediately log the following alarm, "Bad quality received from network module."  Does anyone know what criteria/logic is behind the triggering of this alarm?
We have been unable to find any issues that would cause this alarm to go off.

it is power cycled it works again. We have another FP1600 on same network with no problem. Ethernet drop is 230 feet. Part# is 185690E-01, firmware 4.11. I have swapped it with a spare unit we have of the same part number, 185690E-01 and firmware release.Mike,

Another help source (if you haven't already done so).
Go to your OS Help Menu. In the search field type dvd or cd
Click on all the troubleshooting topics & Support Articles that pertain to your issue.
You can also do the same in Disk Utility. Open same up.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.
This will bring up the Help Menu.

  • Advice needed on building first system from scratch...

Ok, here goes, I am so excited, like a kid on Xmas...My goodies from Newegg will be here later today or tomorrow....I recently purchased: A new tower, Antec PSU, 2x512 Corsair pc3200, MSI K7N2 Delta - ILSR and some other assorted crap....
Anyway, I have never built a system from the ground up before...I am looking forward to the challenge....But before I begin I was wondering if I could get some tips?
I already backed up all the files(photos, demos, benchmarks etc...)that I'll be saving...I also made copies of all the drivers I need to set it up when it's done(Nvidia graphics drivers, DX9.0b), I assume the mobo drivers will come with the mobo....I also want to do a fresh install of Windows as well.....Now my main concern is in regards to the order in which everything is done....I have replaced a motherboard before so I have a little knowledge of the inner workings....But never having built one from scratch, I'm a little leary as to the order and how everything should be installed....
I will also be adding my current Vid. card,  sound card?(I'm pretty sure the onboard is better?) and HDD.....Windows came installed on my machine when I purchased it so I don't have the Windows CD, but I have made the set of recovery discs that is needed to set it back to factory specs and settings...Have I forgotten anything?...Any help would be greatly appreciated...Thanks!

Glenn, I don't have an XP CD...The OS came installed on the computer when I purchased it.....I only have the 6 recovery CD's that I made under "PC RECOVERY TOOLS"...It's an older Compaq...Oh, and it's an AMD xp2400(can be unlocked using the Speed-Strip, currently it's locked because my mobo doesn't support the OC features I so desperately want to play with..Muhahaha ).....Also, I am currently downloading the Nvidia "Unified" driver and SP1....All of a sudden, something I was looking forward to seems like the scariest thing in the world....Will this thing even boot when I get it plugged in? How am I going to install all this crap? Geez, I'm worried now...
Bogs, I will try both on-board and SB Live 5.1....I play a lot of BFV and 1942, I'll see if I can tell if there is a performance and/or increase in sound quality....What tag do you play under? See you on the battlefield!!!
Thanks again for all the replies, Silly
Well first things first, follow my suggestions on the FSB settings until you are sure it's stable and the OS has been loaded and is stable as well before you introduce overclocking to the mix...
I am a bit concerned about your Recovery CD, Most likely it'll puke on you since the motherboard and EVERYTHING except the CPU has changed?  Most likely it will halt and tell you it's not a (enter name) PC and cannot continue. Try it and see.
Maybe someone has a way around it and you can discuss that in either Private Messaging or via E-mail. Please keep that little tidbit out of the forums.
    bogs dollocks,
Ahhh... think you're right there, however it could have been something completely different...but that's another topic entirely...
It will cause moe headaches than it's worth. Get an OEM copy of Windows. Better yet, borrow someone else's and use your key.

  • Coding with Vector file, Convert from PSD to AI or Start over from Scratch?

I have an App developer that is requesting an .AI file for developing an App that can be utilized on all the following Apple hardware (iPhone 4, iPhone 5, iPod touch, iPad, iPad mini). He is insisting on it, because of the vector file. I have a design file that was completed in a layerd PSD. I want to know what, if any, quality is lost from converting from PSD to .AI vector file? Would it be better to have the Designers strach over from Scratch? Please Advise!
    Thanks for your help

Depends on what type of layers are in the .psd. Certain layers type can convert to vector quality (shape layers, type layers, smart objects).
You also should ask the devloper about bitmnapped effects (eg: drop shadow) and placed images, if they are ok to use.

  • Working with midi from scratch

I have a simple setup: a MacBookPro and Logic Express. I want to write in midi and create tracks from scratch. I'm not an instrument performer and I'm coming from working like this with an old computer and program. I have a general understanding of midi. So far the reference doc's for logic don't give me any answers to my question and needs. When I bought the program, I was told that I can work in this manner. I understand that the program has some softsynths that I can assign to tracks to playback midi.
Does anyone know how to do this, or where else to get info about it? I'd appreciate any help, especially since this is a big change for me and it's already becoming quite frustrating.
In any case, I'll appreciate any feedback you might have on this matter.
    Thanks to any and all.
    MacBookPro   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   2.33 GHZ & 2 GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM

    Hey Alga,
On inst tracks (blue Icon) you can load virtual synths, a sampler (EXSP24) and GarageBand sounds, you record midi notes to trigger the virtual instruments, you can even add effects to those tracks. The GM midi tracks are for you to use with external midi modules for example. I work mainly with virtual synths, Logic ones or third party AU plug-ins.
    How to load virtual Synths?
Double click in the blue icon, it open the Mixer (you also have the channel strip at your left, and can do it there) say inst 1 on (I/O) you have to square buttons one Out1-2 (yes it's the output) click and hold on the empty one above (In) (scroll) >Stereo>Logic (test them all) the first is EFM1, you can load the presets on arrow button just bellow bypass button.
    Well have fun exploting those.

  • Sun Java Enterprise Portal Desktop creation from scratch

    Please see below our request.
    1.     What I need?
We are expert in J2EE and relative technologies. We just want a support which helps them to move in a right direction to adopt and excel with SUN JES. Basically, this document expects a guidance to show right direction in creating SUN JES Desktop. Below are the bullet points which try to explain the actual expectation from the response documentation:
    •     Sun JES Desktop: We require hands on documentation which would assist us in creating a desktop from scratch. This documentation should unveil step by step demonstration of Sun portal desktop creation. The document can assume that all the components with SUN JES are already been installed with default sample desktops.
    •     Replica of existing Directory server to new Directory server: We would like to understand the procedure involve in creating a replica of existing directory server. We have already exported LDIF file from the existing directory server. But when we are importing it to the directory server installed at our local machine, it is prompting us with an error message that schema for the importing content not available. This suggests that we have not created schema at our local machine. Therefore, we would require an assistance to export all the content from an existing directory server to new directory server along with the schema.
    •     Change Deployment: It should explain all the required steps involved for re-deployment of the content available with the portal. In other words, if there is a change made in the content of the portal (any JSP, JAR or configurable file) then what are the steps required to re-deploy and reflect the changes on portal?
    2.     Current Status
2.1.     SUN JES Installation and Configuration
We are through with initial setup of SUN JES. We have installed entire required component on our local machine (Windows XP) with default configuration for sample desktop which includes:
    •     Sun Application server
    •     Sun Directory server
    •     Sun Access Manager
    •     Sun Portal server (Instance created in web server)
    •     Sun Instant messaging
    •     Sun Web server
The setup also includes configuration of sample portal (myPortal) which has some desktops already created like enterprise, developer and community desktop.
    2.2.     Component understanding
We have gone through almost all the documents available under SUN documents. But we felt those were rather high level understanding documents. We have basic understanding of the all the components which come up with SUN JES.
    3.     Desktop Example
As we are very new to the SUN JES, we expect something which is very basic to understand. In other words, when we start with any Java or programming language, we use to have Hello World short of program. Similarly, we expect a very simple desktop which just assist in learning steps involved in creation of desktop from scratch. Here, we can assume that all the required components are already being installed and running. Let us take an example:
Suppose we have 4-5 users who belong to different groups. These groups have some defined policies (Something that we use to create with access manager). On the basis of the groups, they are allowed to access the sites available with the portal.
    User - A, B, C, D
    Group – I, II
    User-Group Mapping
    A, D -> I
    B, C -> II
    Desktop contents:
Page displaying URL for google.com and myhcl.in
Group I – On click of google.com, it should display the page in channel. Whereas, on the click of myhcl.in, it should display a message, quoting “You are not authorized to view this page.
Group II - On click of myhcl.in, it should display the page in channel. Whereas, on the click of google.com, it should display a message, quoting “You are not authorized to view this page.
Again, in all we just require a very basic desktop, which helps us in understanding the procedure involve in creating a SUN portal desktop. We think that this exercise would cover and help us in understanding all the nitty-gritty involved for learning SUN JES. Please feel free to add anything which you think will help us in learning SUN portal.
Please let me know if anything unclear.

    Hello,
I am not sure how much you are comfortable with profile creation for the different users.
while user provisioning, if you are aware of kind of user and can assign the profile then this could be easily done.
what if you don't show the link for unauthorised user instead of showing message that "You are not authorised....."
create two different profile with two different channel having links and assign appropriate profile to the users.
