Quantizing of Audio causing region corruption?

I have noticed that when I quantize, then de-quantize audio regions numerous times (trying to learn what works best in a given instance), the note placement eventually becomes way off, even with no quantize is selected. Why is this and what can be done to prevent it? Is there a way to restore an audio region back to the original file's condition?
This problem makes me not want to experiment until I know there is a way to get back to 'square one'!
Thanks!

I need to do that {turn flex off} per track, no?
Not exactly. Flex can be controlled (i.e., turned on and off) on a per track basis, and also on a per region basis (except that it must be on at the track level if you want it to be on at the region level). So you can turn Flex off per track, but you're not required to turn Flex off per track, if all you really want to accomplish is turn Flex off for one region.
The Track Inspector has a menu for selecting Flex modes, and one choice on that menu is "Off." And this is the exact same menu that appears in the track header when you press ⌘F. That keystroke is the equivalent of this command in the Arrange window local menu: View > Flex View. It's also the equivalent of the Flex button in the toolbar. It's important to understand that showing and hiding Flex information is a separate matter from turning Flex on and off.
The Region Inspector has a checkbox called Flex. This checkbox only appears if Flex is turned on for the track hosting this region. The point of this checkbox is that you can turn Flex on for a track, and then make one or more regions on that track exempt from Flex.
The Flex button at the top of Arrange only turns on the flex View, correct?
Exactly. This has to do with what I said about the difference between enabling Flex and making Flex visible. Two different things.
Is it possible that although the original file is not changed, the Region being quantized could get messed up to the point of becoming unusable?
I don't think so.
I think there is a chance that I am getting this problem and the varispeed/autopunch problems mixed up/mixed together
That could be. These features tend to overlap each other somewhat, so it's easy to get confused, especially if you're trying to use a bunch of new, powerful features all at the same time. But there's nothing wrong with that, as long as you're willing to tolerate the confusion. Then you can take a step back and examine each feature separately, to figure out what's causing what.
There might be less confusion if you learn one feature first, before you jump into another one. Some people might prefer that approach. But it's perfectly fine to take some chances and jump right into the deep end, as long as you realize that every now and then you'll be a little bit over your head. No harm done! It's just different approaches to learning, and you should take whatever approach suits you.
sometimes one problem is confused for another because we're just not sharp enough to make the distinction
This is what happens when you try to learn multiple advanced features at once, but there's nothing wrong with doing it that way, if you like to do it that way.
Sorry for all the questions
Don't be sorry, that's what this place is for. And you're asking good questions that are also probably on the minds of lots of other present and future readers.

  • Is there a way of moving/quantizing multiple audio regions at once to the nearest bar/beat/division?

    Hi,
I'm having trouble finding a solution which I hope turns out to be fairly simple. Here's my problem:
I often make drum beats from audio files that looks something like this:
What I'd like to know is if there is a way to highlight say all of the snare audio regions and snap or quantize the "audio region start" to the nearest beat or division. I've been looking everywhere and I just can't seem to find a way to do it to multiple regions at once. It seems like somehting that should maybe be fairly simple. Turning "Flex" on doesn't work as that quantizes the transients as opposed to just the start of each audio region.
The reason I ask is that sometimes when zooming in fully, it turns out some of the regions are not exactly on the grid line.
I hope I made sense there and I'd appreciate any help. Many thanks in advance.

    Hi
The "traditional" way to quantise audio regions is to use the quantise functionality in the Event List.

  • Quantize Strength - Audio Regions

Is it possible to change the quantize strength when quantizing an audio region?
I've split up a 4-bar guitar riff using Strip Silence in the arrange window. Then I opened up the event edit list to quantize the region to 16th notes but couldn't figure out how to change the quantize strength. Any suggestions?

The quantise Strength settings are in the region parameter boz in the inspector. To see them go to +View > Extended Region Parameters+ on the Arrange page menu.
    Rodger.
This is correct, however, these extended options are not available in the 'destructive' Q functions of the Event and Matrix (Piano Roll editors), which are needed to quantise audio regions within the Arrange editor.

  • Why do my audio files constantly corrupt and slip out of sync?

Whether using .caf or .aif (no MP3 audio), I get this strange issue were audio is randomly slipping out of sync.  If I use the slip tool to scrub the audio track, I can usually hear an audible digital hit in the file.  For example, I placed an explosion sound effect in the timeline and it plays back fine... then one time I'll notice the explosion is missing, but the media is still in the timeline.  Level is up.  Track is on.  If I scrub the piece of media, I may find the explosion at a later point in the audio as if copy pasted there... or I'll hear some digital hits that sound like something has been corrupted...  but at the originally intended "in" point, the explosion has simply "moved."  Happens with pieces of music, too.  I'll time something to a flourish and the flourish is missing at some point down the road and I have to do a matchframe overcut to get a new render that matches what I originally intended.  Also have to remember to copy any effects/levels and paste to the newly overcut audio.  A royal pain.
Only temporary solution has been to trash all audio renders and re-render the entire sequence.  Not a permanent fix as the problem appears again and again.  It's really frustrating (and scary) because I now no longer trust that all my audio is playing as intended without first dumping all audio render files and re-rendering.  Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    -A

Thanks for your reply... no, there doesn't seem to be any consistent number of frames skipped. Random pieces of audio simply simply decide to play audio from elswhere in the media.  Clicking on the waveform reveals a clear glitch of some kind... it's as if someone scrambled the media, chunks of audio in the wrong place, etc.  If I go to the original media in the bin and double-click, it plays fine.  I matchframe/overcut  re-render) and it usually fixes it, temporaririly or for good.  Sometimes I have to dump ALL renders and re-render the whole sequence.  It's driving me nuts.
I should explain that I am using up to 30 audio tracks at a time.  My machine can handle it fine, but I guess this complexity is causing problems?  The reality is, even if all audio was 48khz, there would still be a need to render because of all the layers...
I guess I should start by replacing all 44.1 khz audio with 48.1k audio and see if that fixes it...

  • Quantized 16th Notes in regions not playing correctly

I was tracking a 16th note riff into Logic - it was a MIDI string part that was quantized to 16th notes and locked to the quantize grid.  It was playing back perfectly until I drew in a cc11 volume swell.  After drawing in the cc11 curve, the rhythm didn't play back correctly. I checked in the piano roll window to see if the notes were still lined up to the grid and they were. I deleted the cc11 curve and decided to draw in a volume swell with the hyper editor in the arrange window.  Same problem. When I went into the piano roll and clicked on a note, the message below popped up:
The channel numbers in the even edit list were ch1 and ch2. The strangest part was that in the pattern I played, the high notes (played with my pinky and accented) were all ch2, and the low notes (played with my thumb and index finger) were all ch1. After assigning everything to ch1 the rhythm issue within that region remained. You have any idea what might've caused this?
    I'm on Logic Pro 9, OSX 10.7.5.

Sorry delete the post if someone can I don't know how to ..he he
found the answer......select all notes in piano roll an unmute

  • Stereo audio causes "Video Bitrate too High" error

    SOS, Whizzkids.
I try to make a build of a DVD with 1 menu and 3 tracks. , and I get an error message "Video Bitrate Too High." I check the compression setting and they're set to factory default for SD 4by3. (4 and 7 MB).
Get this: I delete one channel of audio from each of the 3 tracks and it compiles perfectly.
I duplicate audio channel 1 by option-dragging to channel 2 for one track, recompile and get the same error.
    I give in. Wassup?
    Any help gratefully received.

Did you convert your audio to AC-3 (Dolby Digital)?
If not, this is the likely cause of your problem. Run your audio through A.Pack (if using DVDSP 3 or earlier) or Compressor 2 (if using DVDSP 4). The "Dolby 2.0" presets in Compressor 2 are the Dolby Digital, but it's recommended to change the following settings and make a new preset.
Set dialog normalization to -31 and the Compression Preset to "None". They default to -27 and "Film Standard", respectively.

Same problem here. upgrade seemed to go OK, but audio quality in library songs is crap.
Demo tunes from itunes store sound great, so it seems my library is corrupted.

  • Audio Causing Multicam Crashes - AudioRenderContextConstructor.ccp-110

    Hello -
I do a lot of multicam interview edits and am running into a relatively consistent crash inducing scenario, namely, editing a multicam group with any audio inserts applied causes premiere to crash. The official error is related to AudioRenderContextConstructor.ccp-110.
Typically, I'll "master" my audio within the multicam group using 2 inserts on each active channel (usually only 2 audio tracks) - insert 1 EQ, and insert 2, dynamics. Once I'm happy with the mix, I make my camera selections in another timeline using the multicamera editor window. if I leave the inserts active within the multicam group, I'm guaranteed premiere will crash at some point while editing. If I export a mixdown (.wav), and then re-import it back into the multicam group while disabling the inserts, I'm less likely to crash, but still no guarantees. I've also tried doing an external mix in audition, using the send to audition feature, and it's still crashing on a pretty consistent basis.
I emptied my media cache and reset my preferences yesterday morning, but crashes started coming back by the afternon. Same thing today.
Is there anything I can do to avoid this very annoying problem?

I do not have soundflower installed.
I do, however, have screenflow (a screen recording app) installed, if that's important. My only expereince with soundflower was when it came bundled with another screen recording app called iShowuHD, which I have never had installed on this machine.

  • Edits to video or audio causing computer lock up freeze

I've been away from FCE video editing for a while, back to it with a simple project. Having problem where the whole computer will lock up when I try to move clips or adjust audio clip lengths. It will EVENTUALLY honor my action. One time it took 14 minutes, one time 10 minutes. I can tell because the clock stops, I can't do anything on the computer except move the mouse. I have to either wait or power off the computer.
I went back in the posts to mid-May, didn't see anything referencing this kind of problem. Was there something in a QT or OS X 10.4.? release that is causing this?
I tried deleting preferences, I tried the spotlight fix - making my FCE Documents folder hidden from Spotlight. I'm running 10.4.9 on a 1.8 single G5.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. This is taking forever!

    1.8 single G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I'm using FCE HD 3.0. I'm using QT 7.1.6. I'm using OS X System version 10.4.9 (8P135). Nothing appears under Software Update.
The media is an export from an iPhoto slideshow. It exported as a .mov file, I didn't pick any unusual options.
I discovered that I can move a clip forward 1.0 seconds (29 frames) and it won't freeze. It freezes at the 1.23 second mark - consistently.
I have managed to finish my project by subdividing it into smaller sequences, and making 1.0 second edits in those sequences. And saving after every move.
However, I have a couple more projects coming up, and want to get to the bottom of this issue. I will experiment with some media coming right off my camcorder, and see if I have the same problems. I will report back.
In the meantime, if you have any suggestions ...

  • Firefox 16.02 hardware acceleration osx imac started causing screen corruption

Weird screen corruption with Firefox 16.02 with hardware acceleration switched on.
iMac 11,1 Intel Core i7 2.8 GHz running OSX 10.6.8 with ATI Radeon HD 4850 display hardware.
Some bizarre effects like a surround on two sides (top and right) of main Firefox window with elements captured from the top and side of main screen which on occasions flash at high speed and also a mouse focal point offset
I've tried Firefox safe mode and extensions plugins disabled and it definitely seems to be caused by switching hardware acceleration on as problems disappear when switched off.
Never had this problem before in several years use of Firefox until 16.02

Thanks for the link. Has something changed in FF v16.02 hardware acceleration that you are aware of that might have caused this?

  • Scrubbing Audio causes AE to beachball

    Mac Pro 4.1
    Model Identifier: MacPro4,1
      Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
      Processor Speed: 2.93 GHz
      Number Of Processors: 2
      Total Number Of Cores: 8
L2 Cache (per core): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per processor): 8 MB
      Memory: 16 GB
    After Effect Settings (CS5 v 10.0.2)
Preview - Open GL is off  (behavior is the same with Open GL on)
Audio Duration set to 30 seconds
    Disc Cache - 2GB
    Memory - Installed Ram: 16GB
Ram reserved for other programs: 6GB
Render Multiple Frames (usually set to off, but behavior is same with it on)
           Cores: 16
           CPU reserved: 3
           RAM/CPU: 3GB
As the title says, scrubbing any audio inside of After Effects causes the program to beachball, pegging processor use at 100.9% and the program gets marked as not responding. By scrubbing audio, I mean holding down the command key while dragging through the timeline to preview the video with the audio for timing cuts and hits. This is happening with projects that only contain an image sequence and a sound file, projects with 3d camera moves and multiple layers... pretty much if I have  to bring a sound file in to AE, I know it will crash when I need to check the audio.
I have tried opening a fresh project with only an audio file (a new project for each a wav, a mp3, and an m4a) and attempting to scrub through the timeline causes AE to freeze.
I am beyond frustrated at this point, as quick projects have turned in to days of work. Any ideas on how to revert AE back to a usable product are greatly appreciated.

Sorry for the delay in response, I was on vacation and have just gotten caught up enough to return to this issue.
I had the most recent Wacom drivers when reporting the issue. There was a new version released today and I have updated to that. Updating the wacom driver did not resolve the issue.
OpenGL is disabled. The issue persists with OpenGL enabled.
I disabled "hardware accelerate panels" and I am able to now scrub through a single audio track of any format on the second try.
I attempt to scrub through a track and my machine beach balls for a minute
I regain control of the program and am able to scrub through a single audio file
When I get to a second audio file in the timeline my machine beachballs and After Effects stops responding just like before
Here is the most recent crash log - http://pastebin.com/cxBujE9F
This happens when switching from a wav to a wav, form a wav to an aif, wav to mp3, mp3 to wav, etc. It will freeze for a moment on the first file and completely hang on the second file.

  • Same AppSet Name, 2 Different Server (Prod and Dev) causing XML corruption

    Thx
Edited by: Joan Perrella on Oct 2, 2010 12:33 AM

Also, another scenario:  User tried to connect durring or after an Optimization is perpformed?
Will this cause an AppInfo.XML corruption?
And what happens if the user changes between 2 different AppSets within the same server (Prod)?
Will this cause the AppInfo.XML corruption?
I have seen many different responses as to why this occurs, and until we upgrade to BPC 7.5 MS occurs, we need to better understand what is causing this, so that we can help our users better understand the current situation here.
We have deleted the duplicate AppSet within 2 different servers and renamed the duplicate AppSet within DEV to a unique name.  Also, had the users delete the corrupted AppInfo.XML file and so forthe, but still this Randomly Occurs to this date.

  • FaceTime audio causes phone to restart?

My phone has restarted during the last two FaceTime audio calls I've made. Both happened at about the 20-30 mark, and had a weird "frozen" screen look like if a tv isn't tuned properly to an OTA broadcast signal for a few moments before hard resetting to the white screen and black apple logo. Both calls were over wifi at a hotel.
Has anyone else seen this problem?  Is it a known issue?  I haven't been able to find any other discussions on this but two times in a row can't be coincidence.

Sounds like there are random restarts being caused by the latest iOS, as it happened to me today while listening to a podcast and using an app.
It may have something to do with the audio because I haven't had this happen when audio wasn't being used.

  • Arrange Tool causing region glitch?

When I try to move or copy a region using the arrange tool, the rhythm of some other regions becomes glitchy.  It seems like there is some sort of overlap, and it's causing some rhythms to misalign.  See at the beginning of the top three regions in section A-2, and the second region of B-2?  I'm not sure why it's only in some regions and not others.  Any ideas why this is happening?

A quick look up of the Solo tool in the manual:
    "Solo Tool
Click-holding on a Region with the Solo tool allows you to listen to the selected Regions in isolation during playback. Moving the mouse vertically also outputs any events the cursor touches, even when the sequencer is stopped. "
If you are just selecting regions with the tool, it won't do much - you need to click-hold the region to hear it played solo'ed...
