Quark Express 6.5 won't quit on my Intel-based iMac

Hi,
At work I use a 20-inch Intel Core 2 Duo iMac (with 2GB RAM installed) and run Quark Express 6.5 as a PowerPC program through Rosetta.
Quark runs fairly quickly and saves OK, but it never quits properly when I shut my Mac down normally, it just hangs and says Application not responding in the Finder. In Quark I can't go to File>Quit either as it just repeats the above.
It's annoying because by not quitting properly, Quark doesn't save a preferences file (XPress Preferences.prf) which obviously remembers where you've put your tool box, palette boxes and other working preferences.
It may seem minor, but it does get irritating when you have to do it countless times a week! This problem effects all my co-workers on the same iMacs as me.
I've tried looking on the Quark website but can't find anything about this problem on their forums. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

Intel based iMac won't recogize external HD anymore

I have a Seagate external fire wire HD that is no longer recognized by my iMac. It froze while trying to format it and I finally had to unplug it. Now it will not show up on my desktop or in Disk Utility. It does show up in system profiler as an unknown device.
I am not trying to save any data, I just need to format it so I can use it for back-up.

if the device is showing up as an unknown device that means the computer is having an issue talking to the device. This usually means ether the cable or the hard drive has failed on an electrical or hardware level.
some ways you might be able to verify this:
have you tried using another cable? if same issue, then it's not the cable.
do you have any other firewire devices, if so do they show up? if yes then the hard drive is bad.
or alternatively, do you have the same issue with the hard drive on another computer? if so the hard drive is bad.
have you tried using the other firewire port on the hard drive? if this works, then that port is bad.
have you tried powering the hard drive off and back on?

Intel based iMacs won't netboot

Hi,
I'm trying to get two labs of intel based iMacs to netboot. I cannot get them to boot from my MacOS 10.4.7 server (Dual G5 1.8Ghz PowerMac). I have sucessfully used the server to netboot almost 100 PowerPC macs (either eMacs or iMac G4's). Is there something special that has to be done to netboot an intel iMac? I created my boot image from the OS X install DVD that came with one of the iMacs. I'm really stumped, any help would be greatly apprecaited

We have some of the recently released Disney DVDs (Lion King, Dumbo, etc.) and they will not play on our 27inch iMac. I put the DVDs in, it spins, makes some great noises and then pops out the DVD. DVD player never pops, up, nothing happens. Any ideas?

HD QT Pixlet won't playback well on Intel based systems?

I've been using Pixlet for a few years with no troubles
on G5 computers at HD resolutions (1920x1080). I recently tried playback on our new Mac Pro and the playback is horrible.
Is there something which prevents Intel based Macs from using Pixlet at HD?

QT Kirk, you are mistaken. Pixlet is a great HD codec and was made for HD purposes. Been using it for years on many movies.
Bottom line, seems to be that there is some hardware in the PowerPC computers that is not in the Intel versions OR the code for Pixlet is not optimized for Intel chips yet and this prevents Intel based computers from playingback Pixlet at the proper frame rates if is is over 720x486 resolution.
Looks like we're going to hold on to our dual G5's for a while so we can playback 1920x1080 Pixlet with no trouble.

I have an iP4500, which I assume is quite similar to your model.
I had to reset the printing system to get things printing again. Only takes a few minutes and no problems at all since I did it a week ago or so.
Plug the printer into the USB port on the Express and restart the printer.
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock) and then open Print and Fax
Right-Click in the printer area on the left and select Reset Printing System
Then click the + (plus) button at the bottom of the printer list to install the printer again.

My Mail programme appears to have locked up. It's showing as open in my doc but in reality I can't open it and it won't quite. If I try to shut the machine down it tells me that I need to quite mail but I can't! Any hints please?

I've tried to troubleshoot downloading Firefox but it won't open on Windows XP. The Firefox Update box with the hour glass symbol runs for hours. Then I have trouble even shutting down. When I click on Firefox, no window, program won't quit, etc....

Windows XP. I used to use Firefox and it worked okay. I'm not sure why I downloaded a new version but it won't open. The window that says "Firefox Update" continues to try to load. Hour glass symbol, for hours. If I try to click on the Desktop symbol, Nothing. Then when I try to shut down, it's slow, programs won't quit, or it freezes. I've removed Firefox completely and tried downloading again with the same results. Even with the latest version. Shit. Whassup?

Why can't I open a Quark Express file in InDesign CS3?

I have a client's magazine in Quark Express (PC format) and I need to recreate it as an InDesign file (Mac format) for laying out future publications. I have tried several times to open it in InDesign as I have read that this is possible. I don't even get an error or warning message. It simply doesn't open at all. It tells me that the file type is not recognised.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get this to open? Perhaps it is a PC/ Mac conflict? I have even added an InDesign file suffix to the end of the Quark file but that also failed.

Just to add to Eugene's recommendation. Q2ID is worth every last dime of the $200 it cost.
I just upgraded to the latest version when I received 25 Quark files to convert for an iPad app. Even for early Quark files that InDesign can open, it does a better job.
BTW, it's also worth noting here that Adobe cannot legally have InDesign open anything later than Quark 4.x files due to the encryption used in Quark 5 and later files. Quark is too dependent on Markzware for XTensions to go after them.

IPhoto 09 Faces wheel spins forever and/or won't quit

Hope someone has insight or it helps others...
For the last several days any import into iPhoto will set it into spinning the Faces album waiting wheel forever. There is no way to Quit. Other times just simple quitting won't work.
Activity shows 40-50% iPhoto CPU usage, lots of context switches (270,000 in 5 minutes of CPU time) but no hangs, no faults. I have previously let it run overnight, in case it was somehow reanalyzing 18000 images, but even then the problem remains.
Console shows: 10/12/09 3:55:58 PM iPhoto[653] * -[NSPathStore2 getCharacters:range:]: index (8) beyond bounds (3)
as most recent item from iPhoto in the log.
Looking inside the iPhoto Library folder the face.db database, iPhotoMain.db etc. have no activity going on. ( I tested by changing the face info on one picture, the Finder last modified date immediately changed, showing the processes are running fine, but just some runaway process won't quit.)
Another console item showed iPhoto finding wrong architectured PGP plugin in contextual menu items, so I have trashed that. And, it finds a Chronos Notes related issue (contextual menu item in library and same named alias in user/library) throw an exception. I also informed ChronosNet.com of this....in case the recent iPhoto acting up is related to the SOHO update that was recently installed.

You have a contextual menu entry (alias) in user/library and same name (original item) in library. That makes apps like iPhoto throw exceptions...

It did not show any quick console messages. I'm surprised an OS X "report this crash to Apple" window did not open up.

iPhone is not "hung" in the traditional sense in that you can do several things within it while it's non-stop Faces spinning wheel displays. I do NOT find it responsive and it does NOT Quit when Faces is spinning forever. tgardner, your experience appears to be different.
Checking in Activity Monitor shows that interestingly there are no hangs or errors. But, looking into contents of iPhoto library shows NO files are modified even after 24 hours or running. In other words, maybe it's not dead, but it is comatose.
Also, checking in Console I always see a variable out of bounds error when this happens.
I have 19000 images and of those maybe 5000 have faces, of about 50 people. ALL of those images are already processed with Names info. Even if Faces needs to update some data, 24 hours of nothing but iPhoto running ought to be enough but it is not.
Others may want to check Console and Activity Monitor and add their experiences here.

Mail.app using 80% CPU and won't quit - any ideas?

Hi, I'll try and cut a short story shorter...
I tried to begin using Mail.app last night instead of Entourage and Thunderbird just to see what it was like. Having never used mail.app before, I use the bundled import wizard to retrieve the settings from the Entourage account (POP, wifes ISP account) which seemed to work ok. I didn't test at this point as I have another account (POP again, my gMail) stored on Thunderbird which I also wanted to import.
To import the mailboxs from Thunderbird I copied the relevant folders from the ~\Library...\myprofile\... folder to the desktop and added the .mbox extension. Then used the import wizard 'other' option to bring them in.
All seemed to go ok. I recreated my 'other' account manually and sent/received some test mails etc. then marked everyting in all mailboxes as read.
At this point the laptop went very slow so I checked Activity Viewer - this showed Mail.app hovering between 70% - 80%. I thought this was a bit odd so I tried to Quit Mail, but it just hung. I then force quit and the CPU calms down.
I opened Mail again and it was ok for about 3 minutes until I try to view various mailboxes. Mail is still responsive but the mailboxes are empty! I use the rebuild function and they show the messages again, unless I look at a different one and then go back to the rebuilt mailbox - it's empty again.
Then the CPU/won't quit happened again. CPU is up at the same levels, Mail.app has 7 threads. I thought there may be some indexing going on so I went to bed. I got up this morning to find the G4 fans going crazy and CPU still consuming the CPU?
Any ideas?
I'm thinking I may trash both accounts and rebuild from scratch tonight.

Aside from whatever the problem is here (which I don't really know), you shouldn't add an .mbox extension to mbox files in order to import them into Mail. Mail uses that extension for something else. Also, you'd get better results using Eudora Mailbox Cleaner to do the conversion.

Print Proxy Queue Won't Quit

On my Brother MFC connected by USB, the printer proxy app won't quit after the print job ends, and you have to click the proxy app's icon in the Dock, then quit the app manually. (You have to close it, as the computer won't sleep by itself after x amount of time if the proxy app is left open.)
This is only intermittent. You can tell in advance if this is going to happen by not seeing a little piece of paper icon superimposed over the printer proxy app's icon in the Dock. No piece of paper icon = proxy app won't quit.
Tried reinstalling all drivers, archive/reinstall, using Printer Setup Repair to "reset the printing system," permissions, Cocktail to deep clean caches including printer caches, all to no avail. New printing cables, connected directly without a hub. Happened on my HP LaserJet 3330 which died, and now on my Brother MFC-2070. Happened when I was using a Titanium laptop also, before the current G4 tower. Happens across many apps, although Office seems to provoke it more frequently.
Ideas anyone, short of trying a totally clean install and reinstalling all apps an drivers from scratch to see if that helps? The OS install I'm working on is back from 10.2.0, and has been upgraded and archive/reinstalled multiple times, and has been used on multiple computers over the years. My Word 2004 Normal template dates back to Word 5.1 and has been converted/upgraded several times (6.0, 98, 2001, X, 2004; could this be a culprit as well); should I rebuild it from scratch (hours and hours of work there, many custom menus, etc).

Premiere Pro CC slows down, then stops working, then won't work, then it won't quit. So I have to force quit every time.
It does not matter if I am working with HD or 4K - same thing happens.
This began happening about a week ago. Nothing really new has changed. I tried to repair permissions and check this from a new admin account because I know that is what Adobe thinks the answer to every problem is. But it did not change anything.

3.5 ghz 6-core
Dual D700
16GB Ram
CC 2014

Used this tip from Adobe and it worked, all running quick and smooth again.

Printing error and Export to PDF error after a Quark Express convert

I are working on a catalogue that was previously made with Quark Express. I used q2id to convert over to InDesign CS3. I had some minor issues setting up the new fonts, but that was no big deal. Now that the catalogue is close to finished, I want to do some test print, however, on several of the files it start processing the printing, finish the processing of all the pages, then kills the print job and comes with the following error:
Print Error: The Adobe Print Engine has failed to output your data due to an unknown problem.
Similar error happens when I try to export to PDF, this error only says:
Failed to Export PFD file
Anyone had a similar problem?? I've done a preflight but ID does not indicate any problems with the file nor its content. Is there another tool to scan the file with to find errors?? Possible fix it?? Is there a log file I could check??

Not sure how to check if we do have OPI comments on some of the images, but looks like I have found a solution to the printing problem at least.
Thanks to a respons by Peter Spier to another topic with similar problems:

The symptoms could describe document corruption rather than network issues which might fall into the category of things that can be cleared up through export to .inx.
Try exporting one or two of the problem files to interchange format, open those and save as new .indd and make a new book file. See if that behaves differently across the network.
I also found another article about INX files, that confirms this technique:

So, I
1. exported all files, one by one to INX or InDesign InterChanged
2. Then reopened those files, saved back as regular .indd files
3. Reopend the new file (hoping for a refreshed file and test to see if it would open without problems.)
4. Then packed the files indevidually and reopend the new packed files when done.
Alle the files now print without any problems but export to PDF still fails with the same error message.
Would the OPI comment be a problem here maybe?

Restore the Acrobat preferences files (Mac OS)

Note: Re-creating the Acrobat preferences files restores settings to their defaults.
Quit Acrobat.
Drag the following files from the Users/[Username]/Library/Preferences folder to the Desktop:
Acrobat WebCapture Cookies
com.adobe.Acrobat.Pro.plist or com.adobe.Acrobat.Pro_x86_9.0.plist
Acrobat Distiller Prefs and com.adobe.Acrobat.Pro.plist (if you are troubleshooting an issue with Distiller)
The Acrobat folder, which contains preferences for forms (MRUFormsList), collaboration (OfflineDocs), and color settings (AcrobatColor Settings.csf)
Restart Acrobat
