Quark files to InDesign

I have InDesign CS2. Can I open an old quark file? I thought I read somewhere that I can. do I need CS3?

To open QuarkXPress 5, 6 or 7, you need to purchase Q2ID from Markzware, which is an InDesign plug-in:

    What is the best software/plugin for converting Quark files to Indesign?
    I don't want to upgrade to the latest Quark now i've got CC so going to make the leap to indesign only. Does Indesign auto convert or do I need anything else?

    ID does not load QXD files. There is a respective commercial third-party plug-in to that effect, but it's rather pricey and I'm not up to speed which versions of Quark and ID it supports and which features come over. Inquire in the ID forum.

  • Opening Quark files in InDesign

    Hello
    I've recently made the move from Quark to InDesign as I've started a new job and the designer I have replaced used InDesign for the vast majority of work. However, there is a 200 page price list which is issued every year and which has always been done in Quark.
    Is there any software I can get hold of which will enable me to open the price list in InDesign? I have found something called Q2ID by Markzware - does anyone have any experience of using this, or can anyone recommend an alternative?
    Thanks!

    Q2ID is the only alternative.
    If the file is in Quark 4 or earlier then it can be opened directly in Indesign. If you can save the Quark version back that far then I suggest doing so.

  • Converting Quark Files to InDesign CS3

    Currently have had problems converting a Quark 5.0 file into ID CS3 Windows platform. It is my understanding that ID CS3 only accepts Quark 4.1 and under...is there anyway around this? The person with the Quark 5.0 file is not able to 'Save As' a 4.1 or lower version; the software doesn't allow it. Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

    Email it to me and I'll convert it for you. If you get a lot of these,
    you might want to invest in Q2ID from Markzware.
    Click my name, go to my website and you'll find contact info there.

  • Why can't I open a Quark Express file in InDesign CS3?

    Hello there,
    I have a client's magazine in Quark Express (PC format) and I need to recreate it as an InDesign file (Mac format) for laying out future publications. I have tried several times to open it in InDesign as I have read that this is possible. I don't even get an error or warning message. It simply doesn't open at all. It tells me that the file type is not recognised.
    Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get this to open? Perhaps it is a PC/ Mac conflict? I have even added an InDesign file suffix to the end of the Quark file but that also failed.
    Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

    Just to add to Eugene's recommendation. Q2ID is worth every last dime of the $200 it cost.
    I just upgraded to the latest version when I received 25 Quark files to convert for an iPad app. Even for early Quark files that InDesign can open, it does a better job.
    BTW, it's also worth noting here that Adobe cannot legally have InDesign open anything later than Quark 4.x files due to the encryption used in Quark 5 and later files. Quark is too dependent on Markzware for XTensions to go after them.

  • A book file in InDesign CS3 (.indb) - Mac and PC - crashing issue

    Several months ago, I posted that when I indexed a 300-page book with lots of chapter, generating the index crashed InDesign. This happened initially on a PC running Windows XP home. When I took the book to a Macintosh, it happened also.
    One thing I had done, and I don't know if this makes a difference, is changed words that already had index tags attached to them.
    It has been several months since I've tried this - I've been waiting until this book was completely written before trying again.
    Since this happened, I've also tried to synchronize styles and that also crashed InDesign. Before the index 'broke', both generating the index and synchronizing styles worked like perfectly - amazing functions of InDesign and makes working with a book much easier.
    Now the book is ready. I stripped all of the index codes from the entire book using search and replace, and then the first time I tried to open the Index window, it crashed again.
    When it recovered, there was a message that 5 of my 24 documents in this book may be damaged.
    So I tried opening the indb file, opening the Indexing window, THEN opening the book files and it crashed. I was able to get the error message this time: An exception unkown software exception (0xc000000d) ocurred in the application at location 0x78138aa0. Click OK to terminate the program.
    When InDesign came back up, I closed the Index window and was able to open all of the book's files with no problem.
    My questions are:
    1 - Is there any way to find out where/how those files are damaged?
    2 - Does anyone know what may cause an Index generation or style synchronization to crash InDesign - and then not fix the problem?
    3 - Could this be something other than the index, and how do I figure out what it might be?
    This book is now 374 pages in 24 documents, and I don't think there is a way to go backwards in the InDesign process at this point.
    I'm not sure how clear I'm being with all of this, but the book is to go to the printer Monday and I can't index it.
    I'd appreciate any help I can get.
    Thanks so much,
    Marcy

  • How can I open quarkxpress 8 files with indesign?

    Hi, prior to purchasing CC a sales person whom I spoke with using online chat confirmed that InDesign would open QuarkXpress files and a plugin was already in the application.
    I can't open any quark files from InDesign. Can this be done without purchasing a third party plug-in?
    Thanks in advance

    InDesign can natively open Quark 4.x and 3.x files only. To open anything
    later you’ll need a copy of Q2ID from Markzware.

  • Quark file will not open in InDesign

    I'm having trouble with one Quark file that will not open in InDesign. It came in a package with several other files that are working just fine.
    I'm getting this popup.
    It is not open in an application, the file format is exactly the same as the other files I have (.qxd), and I'm not sure about the plugin.
    Any ideas?

    Either have it saved back or buy this: http://markzware.com/products/q2id/

  • Just one Quark file to convert to InDesign

    I have just a single, simple 2 page Quark file I need to convert to InDesign.  I don't remember which version of QuarkXpress it was, possible version 6.  My old Mac that ran Quark is not working now, so I cannot check.  But I have a copy of the  file that I need converted to work on InDesign CC.  A company called Markzware has a plug-in that can do the job, but paying $200 for it is too steep for just one file.
    Is there a cheaper way?  I'd be happy to pay, say, $40 to get this file converted.  Thanks for any help!

    I can open and down save it, then get it into ID for you. I have a few versions of Quark installed.
    I have never gone this route and don't know the quality of conversion, however. Don't have markzware's stuff.
    Gratis. No charge. Zip. Buy me a coffee sometime if we ever see each other.
    Upload it to dropbox.com or your own server and PM me the link. I will be out golfing the remainder of the day and can see how well it goes later this evening.

  • Will InDesign open my Quark files?

    Q: Will InDesign open my Quark files?
    A: InDesign can open Quark 3 and 4 files. Quark encrypted version 5 and 6 files just so InDesign can't open them. If you can back save these newer Quark files to version 4 they can be opened by InDesign.
    If you don't have all versions of Quark to backsave to version 4, Markwarz Q2ID (QuarkXPress to Adobe InDesign) offers users a quick and easy way to convert QuarkXPress content into a new Adobe InDesign document.

    Dave, can this be made sticky?

    An EPS caution for imported XPress docs
    InDesign 3 (CS1) has a bug that was never fixed which turns on the non-printing attribute for random EPS graphics in an imported XPress doc. You can spot these graphics in Overprint Preview mode and you can use the Attributes palette to fix them individually. Dave Saunders also wrote a nice script that will turn off the Non-Printing Attribute for every graphic in the document (ie, make *everything* print).
    //DESCRIPTION: Uncheck ALL nonprinting attributes checkboxes
    //Script Author: Dave Saunders
    if (app.documents.length != 0) {
    myGraphs = app.activeDocument.allGraphics;
    myLim = myGraphs.length;
    for (i = 0; myLim > i; i++) {
      myGraphs[i].nonprinting = false
    myPIs = app.activeDocument.allPageItems;
    myLim = myPIs.length;
    for (i = 0; myLim > i; i++) {
      myPIs[i].nonprinting = false
    Theoretically, this bug has been fixed in ID4.

  • Import Quark 6 files into InDesign CS3?

    I'm looking to import my old QuarkExpress 6 files into Indesign CS3. I saw that there is a plug in for about $199 that would allow Indesign to import these files. Is that the only way, or is there a cheaper way to make this happen?
    Thanks for any input.

    This is not a design question. Please ask in the ID forum.

  • Old Quark files are now Unix Executable Files

    I made hundreds of archive CD's with Mac's running OS 9 back in 1990's. They contain Quark files and .tif's. I've referred back to these CD's many many times over the years with no problems. My new iMac has the intel processor. I pop an archive CD in and all the files (with no extensions like "tif" or ".qkd" or ".eps") are now "Unix Executable Files" that won't open.
    I simply add an extension to the images files (like ".tif") and they work. HOWEVER, it's not so easy with the Quark files. I add ".qkd" to the file name and it still remains a Unix file.
    I launch Quark and try to open the file through the finder and it doesn't work. I took an archive CD to a friends house whose on a G5 and the CD worked properly with no extensions needed to be added.
    So I figure the problem is with the Intel/PC based processor. I shouldn't have sold my old G5.
    One forum claimed that a program called "File Buddy" did the trick for him. Does anyone have any other ideas other than me buying a non-Intel Mac.
    I love our new iMacs but I need these archive CD's to work!
    Thanks

    I automatically run OnyX once a week for maintenance, but it didn't help this situation.
    Those chores won't reset the LaunchServices database. Go to the Maintenance heading and click on the Reset tab. Turn on the check box for "LaunchServices database" (all other check boxes off). Click the Reset radio button and then Execute. Restart your Mac.
    OS X will automatically rebuild the database according to the applications on your hard drive, giving preference to Apple applications as they would be when you first install OS X. So if you have the Acrobat Reader set up to open PDF files, you'll have to do that again as they will be set back to Preview.
    Actually it's .qxd not .qkd for Quark XPress file extensions.
    That's it! I knew .qkd was wrong, but Quark 6.x won't show you the old extensions when you save a file, and I couldn't remember it (been using InDesign steadily for a while now).

  • View Quark File Previews in Adobe Bridge

    I would like to have a way to preview Quark Files in Bridge. This would be useful for people who switch between Adobe and Quark products or who are migrating from Quark to Adobe products, or like me have taken over a position where I use InDesign, and the person before me used Quark. It would increase my efficiency greatly I believe :-)
    Thank You!

    Is Bridge set up to store the ACR modifications to those XMP files? Only then it can update the preview right after working on it. Else you need to refresh the preview cache.

  • Linked Files in InDesign Now Modified after Daylight Savings Change

    I looked for a discussion on this and couldn’t find one so if there is one already open please direct me to it and my apologies.
    I was wondering if anyone else has run into this problem after the Daylight Savings Time Change on November 6th.
    Starting on Monday, November 7th we have noticed that all of our InDesign files that had artwork files linked to the document are now coming up as being modified in the Links pallet even though that artwork has not been modified. I haven’t recalled having this issue since we were using Quark 4 and InDesign CS.
    All files are stored on Windows servers running ExtremeZIP, all InDesign files are being opened on Mac Intel and Mac PowerPc models running either OSX 10.4 or OSX 10.6. All servers and Macs are sinc’d to pull the date and time from the same server and we verified that they are matching to the second.
    We get the same results if the files are opened in InDesign CS4, CS5 or CS5.5.
    Is anyone else seeing this issue and if so have you been able to rectify it without updating all the links and saving the files.
    I’ve been searching everywhere and I have found tech notes from Adobe that states that this issue was fixed in CS4.0.6 but we are running this version and still suffering from the problem.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    This sounds like an ExtremeZIP bug. Like perhaps your server is not acconting for daylight saving properly in its on-the-wire protocol. I seem to recall there are a number of gotchas about this involving Windows. I would check with ExtremeZIP. Did the file dates/times change as shown by Get Info in the finder? I suppose it would be difficult to tell at this point...

  • Finding old Quark files to delete

    Hello,
    We currently have a server that has been having stuff transferred to it since 1997. We switched to InDesign a while back and now I'm looking to make some more room on the server. What I'm hoping to do is do a search to find all Quark files from 2005 and before so I can delete them all. I don't want to find artwork from before that as some of it is actually still in use. Logos/headshots/photos etc... Any help on searching for these would be grateful. Thank you.
    Randy

    Thanks Baby Boomer. My problem is there are thousands of these files all with various names, none of which use an extension such as .qxd
    Sample Names:
    redington 1/16
    Amoco 1/8
    Mcdonalds 012599
    So when I do a search, I'm not sure what exactly to search for. It seems like the regular finder has more options than spotlight does as far as date range and stuff but I can't figure out how to locate these files in particular.
