Quarterdeck/Starnine Mail replacement (OS X)

Perhaps not the correct forum for this question, but doesn't really fit anywhere else.
Small office of about 30 employees. We run a very simple intra-office mail program called Quarterdeck or Starnine mail. The client and server software require OS 9/Classic. Our mail server is a simple G3 iMac. I have just bought a handful of new intel-based Macs. Goodbye Classic for those lucky enough to get a new computer.
We have used this simple mail program forever and of course it went away years ago. We use Entourage for Internet mail through an Exchange server maintained by a sister agency . I'm looking for a simple mail program for shooting messages around our office. Something OS X-compatible. Something unable to send messages across the Internet. Suggestions? Anyone?

  • Mail replacement for MS Outlook

I'm using OS 10.8.5 and I need email system to replace MS Outlook. The Mac version of Outlook 2011 (which, like many people, I have to use at work) has the search function disabled. I can't do a search for a name, for example, or anything else. This is a well-known missing feature among Mac users of Outlook. I tried using the Apple Mail app that is built into the OS, but that is so bad that Outlook is still the better choice, despite the drawbacks. Is there another third-party mail app that will sync my calendars, get and receive mail from three mail clients (Exchange, and two Yahoo accounts) and allow me to search within my email? It would be nice if it didn't cost a lot. I'm not interested in upgrading to OS Mavericks, but if it has a better mail system I might try it out. Thanks in advance.

  • [Mail] Replacing a signature with a text in the plain text alternative..?

    Hi all.
I just created a signature for Mail. All is good, I created it in HTML and adapted it accordingly. The issue is, I have my name on it in a sort of logotype so I'm not typing my name explicitly in any email. Now, if the application settings of the other party is set to display emails in plain text format, the plain text alternative of the email will naturally omit the signature thus my name.
Is there any chance I can make it replace the signature with my name for the plain text version? I tried using the 'alt' attribute in the 'object', 'div' and 'img' tags, CDATA and some other tricks but no luck yet. Hope someone has an experience in this subject that has resulted in success...
    Thanks in advance.

If you open a HTML document in a text editor (not TextEdit), you will see stuff like:
    <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"
    <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" lang="en">
    <head>
    <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" />
    <title>Untitled</title>
    <meta name="generator" content="BBEdit 6.5.3" />
    </head>
    <body>
    </body>
    </html>
The part that you need to keep is just the anchor tag:
It depends on how the document is saved, so if an application includes the headers (you can't really tell by just looking at the rendered document), you need to manually remove them. I use BBEdit to create a HTML file with just the anchor tag, so I don't have to worry about what an application is going to copy it as.

  • Mail replaces content of new messages with those of very old messages

    Hi all,
In the last day or so, the content of new emails have been replaced by contents of old messages from long ago. The listing in the inbox stays intact, but when I view it both the message body and the from/subject/cc line (in the viewing window) is changed.
I know this problem is specific to my computer since all of my mail displays correctly on my iPhone. This problem is also specific to one of my two email accounts-- an IMAP account from my own domain.
Is this a cache issue? Something else?
    Thanks,
    Matt

  • When does the new BT mail replace Yahoo ?

I moved to BT last summer from O2 who were being taken over by Sky and picked BT for both the Fibre and football.
I used O2 email as a backup to my  apple i cloud email and wanted to try the BT mail as a replacement for my O2 email after I read BT were replacing Yahoo.
I contacted the BT live web chat and the guy wanted me to log into Yahoo which I am not interested in.  Does anyone know when I will be able to try the replacement BT mail and who is the new provider ?

    Thanks.
I had read yesterday's thread on this topic.
With Outlook you can save anything related to the mail, calendar etc, into My Documents. So they are never lost, if you delete an account.
On a similar topic. iTunes has a nasty habit of wiping out my 14 years of calendar entries (part of Outlook) during a sync, so I back it up before a sync to the iPad and iPod.

Filtering through the information given in yesterdays posts, there should not be any need to change anything on a POP3 account.

  • TS3276 When I try to attach a pdf file to an e-mail the pdf is opened in the e-mail, replacing the text. How do I attach it as a file?

When I try to attach a pdf file to an e-mail it opens and is pasted into the e-mail. How do I attach it as a file?

It is an attachment, it is the way Apple Mail program displays it. When you add the attachment by either using the attach clip or drag and drop, have your cursor were you want the file to be, i.e. under text you have already written.
You can test for yourself that they are still attachments, log into the web account of your email if it as one and send an email to yourself from Apple mail with an attachment and on the web account it will show as an attachment.

  • ICloud Mail replacement for smart mailboxes?

Anyone guide me here on how to have the Mail that is forwarded from my work show in separate organization like I could do in Smart Mail Boxes.  Folders/New Folder and mail rule did not work correctly for me in iCloud mail.  Or is Apple not there yet with something new losing something old?  OS7.2 and iOS5.
    thanks

aside from the rules settings there is nothing to manage. Only "archieve", but that's more of a "to keep" folder .

  • Has anyone solved the "all mail marked as junk" problem?

Mail marks almost all incoming mail and all sent mail as junk. I've found some inconclusive posts on this but no solution. Can anyone explain (or, better) fix this problem?

    Hi
have you read this thread? http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=292113&tstart=100
esp about disabling junk filter & quitting mail.
You're using junk filter in automatic mode?
anyhow - blank field spam does seem to figure in breaking mail's junk filtering. Are you able to create a rule using the applescript linked to in my previous post?. If so - create one & put it at the top of the rule list to weed out any blank subject mail.
    Still a problem?
quit & restart mail - make sure junk filtering is enabled
    delete/empty the junk folder.
Find the mail in your inbox that's marked as junk & move it to the junk folder ( select them all & drag , or messages-move from the menu )
In the junk box, pick one of the moved messages & click 'not junk' - does it get moved back to the inbox? is it still marked as junk (assuming it did move back...)
If clicking 'not junk' isn't behaving - select all the messages & move/drag them back to the inbox. Are they still marked as junk? (hopefully not)
Repeat above with the 'sent' mailbox.
Disable junk filtering in mail prefs
quit mail & open it again
    re-enable junk filtering
    Any better?.....
If you're still having problems - make a note of all your rules ( you 'might' have to re-enter them)
    Quit mail
find the folder ~/library/Mail & drag a copy of the folder to the desktop (mouse + Alt) . Locate the file com.apple.mail.plist in ~/library/preferences/ & drag a copy of that to the desktop too.
These copies enable you to restore your mail to exactly as it is now - in case anything went wrong in the next stage. NOT that I expect it to, having tried all these things on my own mail installation......
Make sure mail is not running.
go into the original ~/library/Mail/ folder & trash these two files - LSMMap2 and MessageRules.plist
start Mail , go to prefs & make sure that junk filter is enabled for your account(s)
Send a message & see if it's marked as junk.
If you had a lot of rules & don't want to re-enter them manually - you can try quitting mail, replacing the MessageRules.plist file in the real Mail folder with the one from the copy made earlier & re-starting Mail.
If sent/junk is fixed - remember it may break again with a blank field email.
Sorry to write so much - but remember, I don't have the problem- so I can't test to see exactly what might fix it & just tell you the good bits.

  • Drag and drop mail to mailboxes not working

Since upgrading to Mountain Lion on my MacBook Pro, when I attempt to drag and drop an e-mail message from my inbox to another mailbox (folder), has stopped working.  I can still move mail to different mailboxes from the Toolbar / Message / Move to.
I'm using Apple Mail 6.0.  I've looked, but do not see any functions in Mail Preferences or Mailbox functions that enables or disables this feature.  Am I looking in the wrong place or missing something?
    Thanks, Terry

It's actually much worst than that.  THe MOVE command works only intermittently to move blocks of messages.  This is true for both the MOVE button in the toolbar and for attempting tm move by using the control-click menu for a selected group of messages.
Mail 5.2 under Lion does not fail in this way.  I am running two systems with the same collections of mail on each.
I moved back to Apple Mail because of the end-of-life status of TBird. TB has lots of bells and whistles that make for easy use and it has handled by 30K/6.5GB mail collection without difficulty.  It also provides a lot of features that Mail does not have, including very helpful statistics during operations.
I looked at a variety of Mail replacements inculding all the commercial stuff.  But nothing really dominates the marketplace andl the vendors seem frail.  It's clear that the big money is in cloud-service e-mail handling, not apps to run on machines you own and control.
I imagined that Apple developed and maintained software would be more reliable and sustainable in the long run. It is distressing that the company's test and QA processes did not catch this but I suppose that Apple too is planning on letting Mail wither as their cloud service gains users and market share.  Why sell an app once when you can charge a monthly fee for the service.  It's perhaps cheeky to say but the cloud isn't a technological model it's a business model.

  • Drag and drop Mail saving

    Hi All
Is there a way of drag and drop mail saving err.. within mail.
Let me explain I use Entourage simply because I can select all the messages (in any of Entourages folders) and drag them onto finder and it create individual mail files. Though this can't be done by default in mail I wonder if there is a work round. I know you can select all your emails in mail and do a save as but this save all the emails as one chuck of text. Plus the Entourage version saves your attachments within the individual files.
    Cheers
    Steve

  • Help with Rules to Copy all Sent and Received Mail

    Friends:
    1. I have created a rule to copy all sent mail to a folder as follows:
mail>prefs>rules>add rule>description:All Sent Mail>To Contains @>Coppy Message to All Sent Mail folder
Is there a better way to do this?
    2. Similarly I tried the above for a folder "All Received Mail" replacing "To" to "From" but it doesn't work. What is a good way to copy all sent mail?
    Thanks amigos,
    Migs

    I have been using
If Any Account is <Account in question> then Copy message to <local archive folder>
It has its quirks (I have it as the last rule in the list) but for the most part is sort of working to make copies of incoming mails.
It does not copy outgoing mails.
It would be nice if Mail offered some sort of "copy on send, copy on receive" functionality in the preferences for those of us who don't trust the "cloud" to not reach into our computers and delete our mail (as happened when our IMAP server ran out of disk space once).

  • Mail Hyperlinks breaks during rendering

Hi, there. I'm composing a message in Mail. I add a hyperhlink in the usual way. The hyperlink is specifically http://www.tonyakay.com/gallery/index2.html#5216418377758916353/1
However when I click on said hyperlink, Mail has replaced the # sign in the URL with a % sign. Now the hyperlink is broken.
I go back into the hyperlink to correct the character replacement and it displays as correct (with the # sign in tact).
Why is Mail replacing # with % in my hyperlink, why does it only display in the text (not the hyperlink entry option) and how do I keep this from happening so I can use active hyperlinks consistently?
    Thanks for offering your insight!

    Tonyakay,
You are reporting that you are using Tiger (10.4.11) -- is this correct. This is known to happen with certain URLs in Mail 2.x when creating a Hyperlink, containing the # sign. I tested in Mail 2.1.3 with your link, and the same thing happened. In Mail 3.5 in Leopard your rather long URL is not accepted when pasted in to make a hyperlink, whereas shorter links, containing the # is accepted and now works perfectly.
So the behavior has somewhat been corrected in Leopard and Mail 3.x, but there apparently is some limit on either length, per se, or with length plus certain characters. The better handling of HTML in the Leopard is at work in the improved behavior.
Btw, it is not merely that the # is changed to a %, but also digits are added following the %.
Sorry to not have a better report.
If you are in fact using 10.4.11 and Mail 2.1.3, then perhaps if you post in the forum for Mail & Address Book in Tiger, you might get additional answers and info -- see:

  • Mail + IMAP + Address Book = Phantom Inbox

I searched the archives and found some topics that I thought might apply, but none seemed to. So here is a new question.
I have two accounts in Mail, all are IMAP. Both are hosted on Dreamhost.
I am able to confirm this is a consistent behavior and not a one-off thing.
When contacts that are in my Address Book send me mail, I get an indicator in Mail's Dock icon that I have a message.
However, when I switch to Mail and click on "Inbox" or any of the individual mailboxes, there is nothing there. At this point, the dock icon usually stops showing a new unread message indicator.
I did figure out, however, that if I log into Dreamhost's webmail that the messages show up in my inbox there.
Only after the messages are marked read, and sometimes only after they are moved to a subfolder in webmail, do they show up in my inbox in Mail.
This is particularly frustrating because of the fact that these are Address Book contacts – my wife and important business contacts. I end up missing mails if I'm not paying attention or don't check webmail often.
    Summary:
    2 IMAP Accounts
Mail dock icon shows new unread messsage
    Inbox is empty
    New unread message indicator disappears
    Check via webmail
    Messages show there
After marked read or sometimes moved to a subfolder and back to inbox, message shows in Mail
Only happens with contacts in Address Book
    Reproducable behavior
Through testing (adding and removing a Gmail account to Address Book and sending from there), I have confirmed that if the person is removed from Address Book, the message shows. If they are added and another message comes, the message does not show. Removed again, the same message appears in inbox.
    I'm using:
10.4.6 (this has been happening through multiple OS updates)

Either you have a rules problem or your mailbox needs to be rebuilt:
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. In the Finder, go to HOME/Library/Mail/.
    3. Locate MessageRules.plist and move it to the Desktop. If there is a file called MessageRules.plist.backup, move it to the Desktop too. You may also see MessageSorting.plist files there; this is where Mail 1.x stored the rules, and they are no longer used by Mail 2.0, so just move them to the Trash if you see them.
    4. Launch Mail. Go to Mail > Preferences > Junk Mail, enable junk filtering again, and configure it however you wish. You may want to shut down the Internet connection before launching Mail to prevent it from downloading anything until the junk mail filter has been enabled.
    5. Determine whether the problem persists or not. In either case, quit Mail and move the rules files from the Desktop back to HOME/Library/Mail/, replacing the new files Mail may have created there.
Now, if moving the rules files out of the Mail folder fixed the problem, then you know there is something wrong with them. Otherwise, your mailbox probably needs to be rebuilt. Select it in Mail and do Mailbox > Rebuild.

  • Mail rule to modify e-mail header (via external command line tool)

    Hello,
Apple Mail lets me add AppleScripts which will be executed whenever this rule is being called.
I have some command line tools that lets me add some information to the e-mail's header. For example, spamprobe (a anti spam tool, which works perfectly for me) would add an e-mail header like
    X-SpamProbe: SPAM 0.9999749 8aba943058c55bb20bd974fc534b71cc
or clamdscan would add (in combination with the command line tool formail) add information about viruses into the e-mail header, such as
    X-Virus: [clamscan] Heuristics.Phishing.Email.SpoofedDomain FOUND
After marking the e-mails, spam can be easily filtered out. Currently I'm using procmail to call all those external tools. They work much more accurate for me than Apple Mail's built-in spamfilter.
Now, however, I want to keep my mail on an IMAP server, thus, procmail does not work anymore. (procmail works only on local e-mails.) Is there any way to "stamp" incoming mails with Apple Mail by an external command line tool, leaving the mail at the end on the IMAP server? It should be the following workflow:
Apple Mail checks new mails and calls a rule on any e-mail which sends a copy of the mail to an external command line tool
The command line tool adds information to the given e-mail (e.g., virus or spam information)
Apple Mail "replaces" the e-mail on the IMAP server with the altered e-mail
Apple Mail calls another rule which filters all detected spam e-mails
Is Mail + AppleScript that flexible to include the use of external command line tools?
Certainly, an even better alternative would be to have a tool like procmail which could work directly on messages on IMAP servers. However, I'm not aware of any that could do that.
    Thanks for any comment.
    Claus

If you want to execute a command line as a mail rule you could define an apple script that executes the command line,
    for example
    tell application "Finder"
      do shell script "ls"
    end tell
    executes the shell command "ls"
For "ls" substitute your command line command.

  • Mail recovery

First, I love my MBP. I had no problems setting up the mail account, but five months ago it started continuously recovering a deleted e-mail message. The mail account is a Gmail account. There is a lengthy delay in sending emails and I haven't received an email on the MBP for five months. I can log directly into the GMAIL website and get my messages each day. Any ideas? Thanks for any suggestions.

Hi AKazak, Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    Don't create a new account!
In ~/Library/Mail (replace with your copy)
Also replace ~/Library/Preferences/ com.apple.mail.plist *with your backup. This is a very important file which contains all email account settings and general mail preferences.
Then launch Mail. If it asks you to import anything, decline.
EDIT: Or as Allan said, didn't see the post as I was editing...
