Quarterly CPU and Patch Wizard

We run an EBS 12.1.3 environment on Linux x86_64.
Patching has always been 'as required' and the client is finding this is an ongoing battle so they would like me to tell them how much work it will be to start applying quarterly CPU updates. I have only looked at applying a CPU once and I am a little unclear how the CPU process will works in conjuntion with Patch Wizard.
My basic viewpoint is the CPU will list all the components affected and I would follow that overall process to:
- first start with the database patching
- then move on to the middle-tier
- and lastly as in this case the application.
With EBS I am hoping the Patch Wizard will help me to get to the pre-reqs I need vs me having to manually check all that.
I have setup Patch Wizard in a Test instance and am just trying to decide if I should be looking at just "Recommended Patches" or "Recommended Patches and New Codelevels" or what the best practice is if any if my system is very out of date.
Does it make sense to view these two processes as working together or are the separate entities?

  • R12.1.3 - Patch Wizard no longer working after CPU upgrade

    R12.1.3 on RH Linux x86_64.
Just upgraded my R12.1.3 environment to get to the Jan 2013 CPU level and decided to setup Patch Wizard to see what it shows now.
Previously I had to apply patch "10629956 - Oracle Applications Patch Wizard" to get patch wizard to work with our proxy server.
Initially I just went ahead and applied that patch again to my new config but still couldn't get past this error:
Validation Error. Please check the indicated fields below.
Unable to connect to Metalink. Please enter a valid Metalink userid and password.
Please also check if the Web Proxy Setup information is correct.
Now upon further investigation I see there is an updated patch:
Patch 16357991 for the latest version of Patch Wizard in Oracle E-Business Suite (Release 12.1)
This Patch has been Superseded.    Reason 16357991 included in 11071638
I applied patch 11071638 but I still get the same validation error.
    Pre-req patches R12.AD.B.delta.3 [9239089] and R12.ATG_PF.B.delta.3 [8919491] had been applied.
I still have an older instance running and patch wizard works properly with the same credentials and proxy server settings there.
So how do I troubleshoot this?

Did you bounce the application services and see if this helps?
Please also review (New Required Patches for Patch Wizard, Patch Manager, and Oracle Application Change Management Pack for Oracle E-Business Suite Releases 11i, 12.0, and 12.1 [ID 1267768.1]) and make sure you have all the patches applied.
    Thanks,

  • Patch wizard output

I have asked our admin to run some reports in patch wizard and they've sent me a set of xml files. When I open them its just nonsense. How does patch wizard export? Cant you export to PDF or similar? Or what do I need to be able to view the xml files in some sort of human readable format.

  • Patch wizards

In patch wizard do you have to download patches before it produces a patch recommendations? Or how does it check whats missing?
Could someone send me a "sample report" of the patch recommendations as I dont have access to EBS.

  • 11i Patching - Patch Wizard and Quarterly CPU's

I have been tasked with applying Oracle's quarterly CPU's to our 11.5.10 CU2 environment.
I have some experience applying patches via adpatch etc. but have never tried to apply a CPU before.
My experience so far has been a lot of reading, checking pre-reqs which lead to more pre-reqs, checking to see if they've been applied or not...
Seems to be a lot of manual checking and prone to error if something is missed.
I have done a little bit of work to try and start using Patch Wizard (so far applying patch to install 'Support' filter so I can at least verify I meet Extended Support requirements).
At any rate the real question here is can I use Patch Wizard to help me apply the oracle CPU's by verifying my config and providing me a list of patches that need to be applied?
Or can I not really do that but rather just get an up to date list based on when I submit my update request? Still trying to learn what all Patch Wizard can do for me.

  • What is the difference between quarterly patches and patch sets

    Hello,
What is the difference between quarterly patches and patch sets?
Should we always apply the latest quarterly pathches?
Is it better to apply to the latest patch set if one can afford?

The quarterly patch sets are generally security fixes, or Critical Patch Updates (CPU). Oracle strongly recommends that the CPU patches are applied. CPU and quarterly patches do not change the release/version of the database.
The patch sets contain bug fixes and do change the release/version of the database.
As with all patches you should test them on a test database before deploying in production. If you have vendor supported applications you should contact your vendor before applying any patchsets.

  • CPU (CRITICAL PATCH UPDATE) AND PATCHSET

when a new bug is fixed in 9.2.0.4, will the bug be addressed in next patch set (9.2.0.5) as well as in the new cpu (CRITICAL PATCH UPDATE) which is going to be released shortly.
    kumaresh...

first, there is no cpu for 9204, and also no cpu for 9205 (except for some antique platforms).
second, a cpu does not fix bugs like patchset does. only critical and security related bugs are fixed, so if you have a non-security related bug, you will need a patchset not a cpu.
finally, yes, the patchsets are cumulative. 9205 includes all 9204 fixes
The CPUs are cumulatives too, the fixes for Jan2006 are included in Apr2007. But CPUAPR2007/9205 does not contain the 9206,9207,9208 bug fixes
and the cpu april is already released for most platforms

  • Quarterly CPU question from a rookie

Question qualifier: I am not a trained or experienced DBA, I have however been thrown under the Oracle bus to set up a Patch and Vulnerability Management program for the Oracle servers.
Question: Are the quarterly CPUs cummulative? In other words, does each quarterly CPU include the patches from the previous quarterly CPU?
If not, I would like to clarify theire installation order.
The CPUs MUST BE installed in the released sequence to make sure that all vulnerabilities are covered.
    a. This is correct. The patches have to be installed in the released order.
    b. This is the official position, but in reality it is not that strict.
    c. It doesn't matter as long as all the patched are applied.
    d. What is a CPU?
I thank everyone in advance for your help.
    Jonathan

All these questions are answered in Note 360470.1 (FAQ)
Basically, CPU patches are security patches likes the ones released by other vendors sent at predefined intervals to contain a list of fixes based on bugs or issues found. They are usually not cumulative (the answer depends on which Oracle product you are referring to).
About the official position?.. Treat as strongly recommended.
    CPU = Critical Patch Update

  • Creating databases with dbca templates after upgrades and patches

I have a 10.2.0.1 base release Oracle Home. Over time it has been upgraded to 10.2.0.3 and quarterly security patches have been applied. Now I want to create a new database using a dbca (database configuration assistant) template.
During the 10.2.0.3 install did the templates also upgraded to include all the 10.2.0.3 stuff? Or are they still back at 10.2.0.1?
What about the quarterly CPU patches? Do they need to be applied to the new db after it is created?
    Thanks,
    Rob

I opened a Service Request. Here is the official answer from Oracle support.
    QUESTION
    =========
After applying the latest CPU(JAN2008CPU) I have created a new database using DBCA's seed template (General). Do I need to run the catcpu
.sql on the newly created database? Are the seed templates already updated with
    the CPU?
    ANSWER
    =======
No, as these templates are not containing the Oracle binaries that is updated by the CPU.
Please let me know if you need further assistance regarding this issue and I will be glad to assist you further.
Otherwise please close this SR from MetaLink.

  • Performance issue with high CPU and IO

    Hi guys,
I am encountering huge user response time on a production system and I don’t know how to solve it.
Doing some extra tests and using the instrumentation that we have in the code we concluded that the DB is the bottleneck.
We generated some AWR reports and noticed the CPU was in top wait events. Also noticed that in a random manner some simple sql take a long time to execute. We activated the sql trace on the system and noticed that for very simple SQLs (unique index access on one table) we have huge exec times. 9s
In the trace file the huge time we had it in fetch area: 9.1s cpu and elapsed 9.2.
And no or very small waits for this specific SQL.
it seems like the bottle neck is on the CPU but at that point there were very few processes running on the DB. Why can we have such a big cpu wait on a simple select? This is a machine with 128 cores. We have quicker responses on machines smaller/busier than this.
We noticed that we had a huge db_cache_size (12G) and after we scale it down we noticed some improvements but not enough. How can I prove that there is a link between high CPU and big cache_size? (there was not wait involved in SQL execution). what can we do in the case we need big DB cache size?
The second issue is that I tried to execute an sql on a big table (FTS on a big table. no join). Again on that smaller machine it runs in 30 seconds and on this machine it runs in 1038 seconds.
Also generated a trace for this SQL on the problematic machine:
call     count       cpu    elapsed       disk      query    current        rows
    Parse        1      0.00       0.00          0          0          0           0
    Execute      1      0.00       0.00          0          0          0           0
    Fetch        1    402.08    1038.31    1842916    6174343          0           1
    total        3    402.08    1038.32    1842916    6174343          0           1
      db file sequential read                     12419        0.21         40.02
      i/o slave wait                             135475        0.51        613.03
      db file scattered read                     135475        0.52        675.15
      log file switch completion                      5        0.06          0.18
latch: In memory undo latch                     6        0.00          0.00
latch: object queue header operation            1        0.00          0.00
********************************************************************************The high CPU is present here also but here I have huge wait on db file scattered read.
Looking at the session with the select the AWG_wait for db scattered read was 0.5. on the other machine it is like 0.07.
I though this is an IO issue. I did some IO tests at SO level and it seems like the read and writes operation are very fast…much faster than the machine that has the awg_wait smaller. Why the difference in waits?
One difference between these two DBs is that the problem one has the db block size = 16k and the other one has 8k.
I received some reports done at OS level on CPU and IO usage on the problematic machine (in normal operations). It seems like the CPU is very used and the IO stays very low.
On the other machine, the smaller and the faster one, it is other way around.
What is the problem here? How can I test further? Can I link the high CPU to low/slow IO?
we have 10G on sun os with ASM.
    Thanks in advance.

Yes, there are many things you can and should do to isolate this. But first check MOS Poor Performance With Oracle9i and 10g Releases When Using Dynamic Intimate Shared Memory (DISM) [ID 1018855.1] isn't messing you up to start.
Also, be sure and post exact patch levels for both Oracle and OS.
Be sure and check all your I/O settings and see what MOS has to say about those.
Are you using ASSM? See Long running update
Since it got a little better with shrinking the SGA size, that might indicate (wild speculation here, something like) one of the problems is simply too much thrashing within the SGA, as oracle decides "small" objects being full scanned in memory is faster than range scans (or whatever) from disk, overloading the cpu, not allowing the cpu to ask for other full scans from I/O. Possibly made worse by row level locking, or some other app issue that just does too much cpu.
You probably have more than one thing wrong. High fetch count might mean you need to adjust the array size on the clients.
Now that that is all out of the way, if you still haven't found the problem, go through http://oracle-randolf.blogspot.com/2009/02/basic-sql-statement-performance.html
Edit: Oh, see Solaris 10 memory management conflicts with Automatic PGA Memory Management [ID 460424.1] too.

  • Patch Wizard - Support Filter question

I've installed the Support Filter on my 11.5.10 CU2 system and ran it as a test to make sure my system would qualify for Extended Support.
The overall status of the job shows Recommended=0 and New Code level=0 so at first appearance it looks good.
However if I check the job status and sub requests of my 'Support' job I see a couple of requests that ended with warning.
The first job 'Submit Recommended Patches (wrapper) shows this in the Request Log:
**WARNING: Some patch information not uploaded correctly**
Patches which encountered problems during Upload:
    1. 2147366
    2. 2372715
If I look a little closer I see there are some INFO lines that say:
INFO: The patch does not contain f2147366.ldt since it is an old patch. Patch Advisor cannot be used for this patch.
INFO: The patch does not contain f2372715.ldt since it is an old patch. Patch Advisor cannot be used for this patch.
The jobs after that finish as Completed Normal" but the last job PWSTATUSTRACKER ends with 'warning' and the request logs shows:

Overall request set Status is Error

So is the overall status 'warning' due to the error where a couple of patches couldn't be uploaded but otherwise looks good.

    Hi,

Regarding Backup as it is Application Level patch, is it fine if i take Backup of $ORACLE_HOME for Application Tier ?You will have to take a full backup (which means all the application/database tier files -- i.e. all the directories after you shutdown all the services cleanly).
    1. After that I need to 'Enable Maintenance Mode' using adadmin utility
    applmgr>$adadmin
    2. Source Env file for Application Tier
    applmgr>$ . SID_hostname.endYou mean env file.
    3. Stop all Application Services
    applmgr>$ . adstpall.sh
    4. Copy patch to Directory
    5. Unzip
    6. applmgr>$ cd /u01/patch/10629956
    7. After that apply patch using adpatch utility
    applmgr>$ adpatch
    8. Disable Maintenance Mode
    9. Start Application Tier Services
    10. Retest Correct.
Can I follow these steps ? Yes.
By default value of parameter "apply" is "y" so does it apply patch intest mode? I nned to specify it to "n" or should i test it first as i m doing this first time. You do not need to test it if you take a backup, and this is a small patch so you should be OK :)
If in case anything goes wrong can I restore my Application Services back using old Oracle_Home backup ?Yes.
Note: Please edit the post before the previous one as it contains the contents of MOS document and this violates Oracle support agreement policy.
    Thanks,
    Hussein
