Quartz Composer - Effects of Other Cards? Any New Ideas?

I have read the discussions here about Quartz Composer, and noticed a mix of difficulties:
1 hardware restrictions (G4 or video card)
2 can't get preview (white screen), but can get render
3 can get preview, but can't get render (white screen)
4 can't get either preview or render
5 get greyed or coloured results in renders
I'm suffering 4 - no preview or render - but not 1 - I have a G5 2G Dual Processor, with an ATI Radeon Pro 9600. (I see ripples when widgets launch.)
In this context, are there any new ideas?
One observation: to find out the name of my video card, I ran system profiler, to be reminded that I have:
- an old ATI card driving a second monitor in a PCI slot
- an Alchemy TV card also in a PCI slot
I know it's tempting to blame the cards for the iMovie difficulty, especially since we are talking about a video problem, and both are video cards, so I want to ask:
- are there any people with these kinds of cards having no problem at all?
- are there any people with similar cards experiencing similar problems?

Have you tried pulling out [Alchemy TV and second monitor] cards, just to rule
them out as a source of the problem?
No... my thinking is that I'm an amateur iMovie user, and in the end I would feel more comfortable with my second montor and (very occasionally used!) TV than with a fully working iMovie. Hence my questions were directed at finding out whether others had:
- these problems without cards being fitted
- no problems despite cards being fitted

I've tried the Quartz Composer effects in iMovie 6 but they preview as blank white video and when I apply the effect they render as blank white video.

I see that the Quartz Composer effects are supported only for Core Image supported video cards. I think that means I'm out of luck. It seems odd that the effects still attempt to render and be applied even if my system doesn't support them. Is something wrong with my installation, or is this expected behavior?
I've seen statements here on the discussions that Quartz Extreme should enable effects like the ripple when opening or closing Dashboard Widgets. My card does support Quartz Extreme but I do not see the ripples. I'm guessing that it's actually Core Image that produces those effects and that's why I don't see them. Is that a correct guess?
I guess I'm confused over the difference between Quartz Extreme and Core Image.

That is true. Quartz Extreme is a special, hardware accelerated instance of Quartz. Quartz is OS X's native drawing environment. When Quartz Extreme is not supported, Quartz will be used instead.
Quartz Composer is something else that builds on Quartz. It appears it requires Core Image. Core Image is a set of graphics routines that allow image manipulation (if you have the developer package installed, you can also find an application called 'Quartz Composer' that you can use to define effects, screensavers etc).
Core Image also intents to leverage your GPU. Apple's Documentation alleges that if there is no GPU available it will use the CPU instead. Theoretically, your Mac should support Core Image. Yet...

This may be the reason why you can't use these effects in iMovie. Because of shortcomings in iMovie's plug-in API, the plug-ins may still show up in the f/x panel - they simply will not function when selected.
Perhaps a later version of OS X enables CoreImage on all Macs?

Any new ideas or suggestions for flattening layer effects without changing appearance

Hello all,
I've been doing a lot of looking around for ideas on how to make my work flow more simple. I regularly run into an issue with layer effects when they are flattened and have been unable to find any good solutions but was wondering if any new developments have come up with the newer versions of Photoshop that I am somehow overlooking?
My main issue is that when I flatten layers in sections or groups (i.e. flatten only 2 or more layers together in a larger composition but not the entire compostion), layer effects with blending modes often flatten strangely. I particularly notice this with drop shadows as I often use a color other than black, usually a very dark shade of the color that is applied to the element the shadow is overlapping. To me it gives it a much more realistic and natural look. When I flatten a layer I notice that it appears the multiply mode is stripped from drop shadow FX unless they are flattened with the nackground element, so if I used a dark blue for example, once flattened the shadow is now a distinct blue shade that appears to be in normal blending mode. I can set that drop shadow layer to multiply to restore it but then I have to keep the drop shadow element on it's own layer seperate from the body of the other flattened content otherwise it inherits the multipoy mode as well of course, which still leaves me with an unwanted layer to deal with.
My curreny solutions range from hiding all other layers and merging visible, which works from some things but not the aforementioned drop shadow issue, I will also keep things that just don't co-operate on their own seperate layer, like the drop shadow and just leave them be if I can. In cases where that isn't an option I will even hide all other layers and comp the portion of the PSD that needs flattened to a seperate TIFF or PNG and import back into the PSD. Sometimes this will work around the issue and make everything interact as desired. It's a lenghty affair though that involves mental acrobatics every time to devise a suitable workaround that I can use for my purposes.
The reason I need to do this often is because I work for a web development company as the designer. Once the design is done sometimes I will do the slicing and prepping for web (not an issue when I do this because I can leave everything as a PSD). When other team members like the web developer need access to the graphics files though, they use Fireworks which means I need a layered PNG so they can slice as needed with the software they are familiar with while maintining transparency where needed.
I know some will say just to use Fireworks then but that isn't a desireable solution to me because I find Fireworks very limiting on the advanced Fx and graphic manipulation. I agree that Fireworks can be very capable and can do very nice things when you're thinking of the design of the entire site in general, but it usually can't do the advanced fx and manipulation I like to use for the "eye candy" portions of the site, especially when you are using mutiple Fx on a layer with their own blending modes. I find it more of a hassle to build a general site in Fireworks and import elements from Phoroshop. Keeping track of proper sizing and constantly loading placeholder background images to photoshop for reference isn't for me!
I have a pretty decent understanding of how the layer flattening works and how the blending modes function (like the fact you can't have mutiple blending modes on a single layer, thus many of the issues with layer Fx blending modes). I am using CS5.5 Design premium and am hoping there have been some advances in working with this type of thing. I know that if I could flatten the drop shadow layer with the layer it overlaps that would solve the issue nicely but this is seldom possible on websites where you have fluid areas that need to change size and the image element with the drop shadow may not always be in the same place on the site background.
It would be awesome if, since you have the ability to apply blending modes to individual layer effects, if Photoshop could have a setting to somehow flatten the layer effects and layer in it's own self containted process and then place the flattened layer within the the PSD as if you imported a transparent image like a TIFF or PNG. This is basically what I do on the extreme side of tihngs manually when needed. It would be great if there was a way to automate that type of functionality.
Does anyone know of any new or good method to deal with this type of thing? Sorry about the long post, I was trying to be as detailed as possible as I know it's sometimes easy to misunderstand what someone is asking with this type of question. Thanks for the reply. The reason I need to do things this way is because of the workflow at my company. I need to be able to convert my photoshop PSD files in Fireworks and have the layers behave predictably. Trying to open a PSD file as is in Fireworks, while keeping the layer flexibility intact usually creates all kinds of chaos, ranging from Fireworks flat out ignoring some layer effects to drastically changing them. I assume because Fireworks way of intrepreting some setting numerically is different than Photoshop and because Fireworks doesn't even have some of the effect properties at all.
The web developers need to have layered PNG files so they can slice re-slice and move elements around as needed white they develop a website. They need to maintain transparency on the seperate elements of the website mockup so that they can reuse and move elements around as needed. At times I end up doing the CSS layout on a site and in those cases it doesn't matter becuase I can work straight from the PSD and export elements straight to PNG files etc as needed. It's when I need to provide the development team with a Fireworks PNG version of the website mockup that I have these issues.
For example and to clarify, I may have a website interface designed that has several fancy buttons or a header element with drop shadows on them or that overlap a background element in some way. If I am doing the coding on the site I can simply hide all other layers than the releveant ones, flatten visible to maintain transparency, save for web etc and I have the element complete with a nice drop shadow ready to drop into the code. If the developers are doing the slicing and layout though, they don't know how to use Photoshop (and aren't going to be learning anytime soon) but they do use Fireworks... so they want the site in fireworks, complete with the ability to hide background elements or other parts of the site that may be in the way of making the proper PNG for that button or other element that maintains transparency AND keeps the drop shadow, the proper color and transparency as well.
What typically happens if I don't flatten each element of the site design before importing into Fireworks is that it will look very different in Fireworks, but being web developers (lol!) they don't notice or maybe even care that something looks weird or appears to be missing a shadow or other effect. Then once the site goes live, the client DOES notice it and I end up scrambling to fix the issue. That usually means going back to the PSD in a rush and trying to flatten all the elements anyway to convert to a nice Fireworks PNG so they can recapture their slices, or taking the slice they used on the website and pasting it into the PSD original so I can make a direct match and converting the element myself after the fact.
In order to avoid these work flow issues and embarrassments I have taken to flattening each individual element (i.e. a button and all of it's effects) of website GUI to ensure Fireworks can't fiddle with it on import. I can then give the web developers a PNG they can slice easily but with all the important elements still completely seperate from one another. If they hide the layer that is the shopping cart button for example, they are going to be hiding the button and it's drop shadow or glow or any other effects. That way it can't be messed up by Fireworks or a developer. With buttons in particular I can't just include a portion of the background where the drop shadow would be becuase that button could end up anywhere on the site in the end. One of the features our business offers clients is a fair amount of flexibility on the CMS side of things to move elements around and create new sections of the site so I need to keep most elements as felxible as possible, preferrably without giving up quality of the artwork.
I feel like I have a fairly solid understanding of why the layer effects act the way they do and how they interact, even if I don't understand fully the math that makes them do what they do. I guess I was hoping that the increasing power in the CS suites, especially in 5 and 5.5 might have made some new work around possible, or that they might have added some feature buried in the menus somewhere because it's not that practicle for many users. I have several ways to work around these issues now, but they are manual and cumbersome, I was hoping there might have been an action script or feature to automate some of this.
I think a really cool thing to be able to do would be to be able to select some layers and have Photoshop copy them and paste them into a new document with their layer styles and all intact, flatten that document with transparency intact and then put the new flattened file back into the original document in the same location on the artboard as a new layer. This is essentially what I do when I hide all the other layers, merge visible and save as a TIFF or PNG and then copy that new file back into my full PSD document. I still experience some color shifting this way but usually not as drastic as when I try to merge directly in the full PSD. OR if that can't work, even better would be to somehow have the effects be able to "float" with the actual photoshop layer, almost like sub layers of that layer, so that each one could have it's own blending mode (and individual masks for each... that would be awesome!) and you could flatten them together somehow when needed and maintain color tones etc. Don't know if this could work though since I don't know what the limitations of the math process that combines the layers are. I would imagine some of it it would be possible, if not worth their time, since smart objects open in their own document window when you edit. I would imagine that some code work on the back end might be able to be applied using a similar method to give extra flexbility of some layer effects in Photoshop. I would love it, I know that!
Hopefully there is at least as faster way if not an ideal work around. It defintely adds to the development cycle of a website to have to go through this step. It's also at a point in the development cycle where the site has been approved and there can be added pressure about why they development team still has to wait on a design that has already been OK'd and should be ready to slice. I have gained understanding with my boss about this and it's worked out OK for the most part, but it would certainly make him happier if I could eliminate that extra step, or reduce the time needed. On a complicated website I might lose half a day of work or more sorting out the various site elements and figuring out how much I can flatten and how and what order to break effects off their layers to maintain appearance. I have tried Fireworks several times as a native solution, but ultimately I feel very restricted by Fireworks and often can't do what I had in mind, although it has gotten better. Also on a psychological level, Fireworks "working with basic shapes" method of desigining a website tends to steer me down that mental path for some reason and I always end up with sites that look much less fluid and organi, much more boxy than when I design in Photoshop. One of our companies selling points is that we design sites that break away from the boxy and simpler web 2.0 look so Fireworks is not really a consideration for me at this point. Any new ideas on hyperlinking Numbers to pdf?

After some 23 years on DOS/Windows, I now have a MAcBook with Numbers. I've browsed through some of the posts several years old regarding the issue of hyperlinking a cell in Numbers to an external pdf file. Apparently that can be done on the web but not on a local drive. Which is where the pdfs I want to link are located. This was a function easily performed in EXCEL. Before I give in and go back to EXCEL, any current ideas?

In System Preferences, Sharing, turn on Web Sharing. Then you can link directly to PDF files on your local drive that will open in your browser. On Lion, this looks pretty straight forward. When you turn on the preference, you'll see an example of what URL to use, e.g. http://mycomputer.com/test.pdf.
Other computers are on your local network will be able to see your PDF files (if your computer is connected directly to the internet, then this is probably a bigger issue, but you should be on a local network behind a firewall). If that is indeed an issue, there may be a way to stop keep the PDFs hidden from outside your computer, but I am not sure. Glad to explore if you reply this is an issue.

HELP! Strange Boot / Start Up Problem on iBook G4 - Any NEW ideas?

Hi everyone,
a bit information first: My early 2003 iBook G4/1Ghz has been working flawlessly all the time, been well operator maintenanced and updated regulary and gave me no real problems so far. Am working with it daily in the office and on trips.
Now, out of a blue sky, I face a weird, very stubborn boot problem after a sudden freeze/hang that enforced a hard restart a couple of days ago.
It won't go beyond the splash gray screen or sometimes the Apple Logo w/ spinning gear on start up. Safe Mode booting does not work either, no repairs are done obviously, it just keeps running for ever in "spinning mode" (HD sounds normal, though).
Tried all tricks, like PRAM reset, all peripherals disconnected, different start up modes e.g. into single user mode, won't work, no console appears.
Then -- sometimes after a night/few hours of rest -- it seems to boot perfectly fine to the desktop, all seems "normal", the HD appears, Dock, Programs, ... System Profiler didn't give me ANY useful hints to hardware or SW-related problem. Even the HD-S.M.A.R.T. info was NORMAL. Checked that, too!
After some minutes of seemingly normal conditions (about 10 to 20), I suddenly tend to get another of these really nasty hangs/freezes where no key combination will get you out, where no Apple Menu is accessable -> forces me to do a hard restart or shut off with the power button :-(( Same re-boot problem after that! (gray screen only, of course)
NOTE: Command-C boot from the CD Original Install Disc is possible, BUT when I try to launch Disk Utility to check/repair the HD, the internal drive DOES NOT show up in the list! Same problem occurs even with the great tool Disk Warrior that usally fixes almost ANY HD directory related problem
• What could be the cause of this weird no-boot behavior?
• Maybe an inconsistent damaged boot sektor on the HD?
• Could I still acces it with any disk tools for testing/repairing?
• Did I miss a trick to boot into some repair/testing routine?
• How could I acess the HD maybe in slave mode to at least access my precious data?
• Other good ideas to get me out of the nerve wrecking dilemma?

If you haven't already try resetting the PMU. This is done by pressing ControlShift+OptionPower Button.

Backup your data and perform an Erase and Install
After doing either of the install steps, let the machine run for a bit to see what happens. Then perform software updates (repair permissions after each major update). Then reinstall your applications one by one, just in case one of them is the culprit.
Use the Apple Hardware Test disc that came with you machine.
If you come to the last point then chances are you'll need to send it in for repairs, as it will most likely point to a hardware issue once all the software has been ruled out.

Quicktime wont Un-install (error 2330, fatal error etc) any new ideas??

right, ive tried everything now other than cleaning my whole c; and d; drives totally!
i've uninstalled iTunes any any related software, hoping it would help solve this quicktime problem, but no success.
Also i have manually taken every Quicktime file from C;programes/quicktime, and also from the registry window (start, Run: 'Regedit' )
But! then i used the search window and searched - Quicktime, a few files appeared, i deleted all that would allow me, leaving 6 files all 'Quicktime Extensions' and these files will not allow me to delete them....
please someone must have the answer, im gettin desperate

Some of the problems installing or uninstalling QT have been related to permissions where another user originally installed QT so you might want to look into mulitible users on the computer.
C:\WINDOWS\system32 files QuickTime qts and QuickTimeVR qtx in some cases needed to be deleted.
Also http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 has been helpful.
Another cause is having K-Lite and ACE codecs (not sure if I have then pronounced correctly) installed on the computer. If so they need to be removed. They were first pointed out by b noir, and proved to be a issue with QT. What are the files that you mentioned that will not delete?

Any new ideas how to tell Mail to ignore calls for sound?

I tried to be brief while making my question clear; I don't know if I was successful. I posed this question some time ago and received some very good responses from very knowledgeable people, but we weren't able to quite nail down a solution.
I produce audio using Pro Tools, which uses a Firewire device (Digi002) to record and play sound. However, this does not play Mac system alerts (they play through Mac's internal audio bus). When reading a Mail message that contains an audio or video file, or if I create a Mail message and attach an audio or video file, Mail 'seizes' (addresses) the Digi002, assuming that I want to play the file. Not only do I not want to play the files from within Mail, but once Mail has control of the Digi002, I cannot launch Pro Tools because Pro Tools needs the Digi002. I first have to quit Mail to free the Digi002.
I'd really like Mail to leave the Digi002 alone so that I can use Mail and Pro Tools simultaneously. But there is not a simple option to disable Mail's ability to play sound. Does anyone have any ideas how I might tell Mail to 'mind its own business?'

rather a visual issue. what do you mean with "where do you want the send mail go to"?
email send within mail keeps those in the send folder even if "save send mail on imap server" is not ticked.
if i tick "send mail on imap server" what happens on the server side is that it creates a folder "send mail" in addition to its folder "send". but mail adds then the folder "send" which apparently does not contain the server saved send mails 'cause them are in "send mail". as this is quite inaccaptable at least i want to blend it out visually.

Any new ideas for launching web browser from application

I have searched the forums trying to find a new way of launching a web browser from a java application. The problem I am having is that on Unix and Linux systems, at least the variety I have access to (not quite sure on what that variety those are as they are not my systems or systems I control), the common method of using Runtime.getRuntime().exec(STRING) with either netscape or mozilla does not work. While using the Runtime.exec method is not the same as a console, I did try on these systems "netscape + A_WEB_ADDRESS" (or mozilla) and it did launch the respective browser with the page, so it appears that at least from the console level, those commands are valid.
All the forums seem to say that the Runtime.exec method is the way to go. All the source code I have found through links from the forum say the same thing. I have voted on this bug:

and the feedback there does seem to indicate that there is similar trouble out there. Below is the code I am using. It does work on Win2000,XP, and Mac OSX. The application is not supported on earlier systems, and as it stands it will not work on Win 95,98, nor ME. Only small modification should be needed for work on those OSs, but as I no longer personally use those OSs, I cannot be sure.

there is a shell script on Linux called htmlview that you can launch like this:

I cannot install itunes 10.5 on my XP laptop, the error says that it cannot create the folder for apple software update as it already exists but there is no sign of the folder, any new ideas?

I tried to install an even older version than 1.5
I went to filehippo.com and downloaded the oldest version I could find there which was the version 1.0.7

How to use Quartz Composer as a video effect?

Hello everybody,
I recorded a movie with my iSight camera. And now I want to apply a Quartz Composer effect that I created. I put the Quicktime Movie in the same folder as the .qtc file and imported it via the "Movie Loader". Thats works fine in the Quartz Composer Preview window.
But everytime I exported it from Quartz Composer as a Quicktime movie, the place where the movie is, is just white. No movie.
I tried to open the .qtz file in Quicktime, but I got the same result.
What settings do I have to make, to make sure my movie is exported to Quicktime?
I'm quite new to Quartz Composer, but I hope somebody can help me.

You'll want to use Core Video which is technically part of QC and yes I do believe you can apply QC filters to video clips using Core Video.

Any new thoughts on local sync for calendars

Any new ideas on how to achieve local sync for iOS devices under Mavericks? I am still not comfortable with using iCloud and would prefer to manage my data on my own. I am aware of options like setting up your own local wifi server and am intrigued by the 'devicesync' app on the app store. Anything else out there or do you know of anyone working on a solution to this 'feature'? Thanks and happy holidays to all.

Hi nbar, and thanks for your reply. Apologies in advance if it appears that I'm getting on my 'high horse', as the saying goes.
First off, I'm not a power user....I've got a very simple set up with a 4 year old MacBook Pro. When I do my work I do it on systems purpose-built for editing or graphics work. This gripe is strictly about how my personal devices function.
I have a couple of issues. The primary is ownership of my data. I simply do not trust Apple anymore. The ease with which services like Facebook or Google rewrite their licenseing agreements without, it seems, a thought to their end users, leads me to believe that given enough time Apple will begin mining any data that you or I store in iCloud. This is my data and Apple has no right to scan it or use it in any way whatsoever.
Secondly, I don't appreciate being pushed into a 'service' that I do not want. I don't need iCloud to do my business or to live my interconnected life. Besides, in this day and age, 5gb is pretty paltry in terms of storage; after that I get the privilege of paying a monthly fee for more space.
Third, committing to the cloud means that any interconnected device that I have will use up more bandwidth on my data plan. If I have three or four devices connected to the cloud then every time I download something from iTunes it uses up 3-4 times the original bandwidth as the file is spread across my devices.
Fourth, and most disappointing, Apple was not very candid about the loss of local sync when Mavericks was rolled out. True, in the developer or beta testing community this may have been perfectly clear but to us 'regular' end users there was no real warning. I find this most disheartening as I bought in to the Apple brand as the anti-corporate, anti-Microsoft, maverick (yes, I said Maverick ). This episode, for better of for worse, has soured me somewhat on the brand. And by the looks of it on-line and on these discussion groups, I'm not alone in this perception. This feels more like a blatant play for dollars and less about providing new feature sets to end users.
There are a lot of reasons why the cloud is good for some people and for certain types of activities. And I'm not naive enough to think that my data is perfectly safe and is not already floating out there somewhere. However, to the extent that I can, I simply want to be able to choose where my data goes and who I trust to handle it. Apple took away my cheese and I want it back!
