Quartz Extreme and/or Core Image on RAGE?

Hi,
I have a Power Mac G4 and it has a 16MB AGP ATI RAGE 128 card in it. Is there anyway I can enable Quartz Extreme and/or Core Image on it? It's running Tiger (10.4.11).

This application supposedly would patch a PCI Mac to use Quartz Extreme but does not work after 10.4.3. It isn't intended for an AGP Mac. According to Apple you need a Radeon card to use Quartz Extreme: Mac OS X 10.4: Requirements for Quartz Extreme and Core Image graphics.

  • Quartz Extreme and Screen Savers not working

I couldn't find an answer to my problem. But I found an answer close to mine said (10.4.4 broke Quartz Extreme). There system profiler says Quartz not supported. I checked mine says the same thing now. The answer was to delete two files from system library (Extension.kextcache and Extension.mkext) I did that and restarted worked fine, turn computer back on today back to the same problem.
    I could use some HELP.
This is my problem. I don't remember when this started but it's been months. It's my screen savers I have regular savers and Quartz savers and Quartz saver I made when I got Tiger. Went to change saver one day and all my Quartz savers were missing some savers that were not Quartz and the screen saver called my computer name has a blue file folder. I went thought the savers found some that made System Preference crash though them out still did not help, checked saver folder all there. I restarted computer some times were there, some times not might have to restart few more times to work. When I turn computer on next day some times would be all back some times not. Have had regular screen saver missing but when screen saver kicked in after some time it work but not in list. Checked folder again the saver were missing from folder too this time. I don't want to have to restart my computer each time I want to use those savers. Some time have to keep started over and over again in a roll to get to work don't think thats very good for my computer. I also did repair permission that didn't help. Don't know what to try next. Can anybody help.

Yes, I did try a new account and the screen saver still will not come on. I spent about an hour on the phone with Apple Support and the tech did seem sharp. After trying many things including your suggestion his opinion was that I downloaded something that wrote something into the screen saver Pref's or something to keep it from activating. The only screen saver I had downloaded around that time was a Superman one relating to the new Superman movie. I think I will contact the originator of that screen saver and see what he has to say. Apple support suggested I do a new OS install. Thanks for your reply to my post

  • Quartz Composer effects render blank white video - confused re Core Image

I've tried the Quartz Composer effects in iMovie 6 but they preview as blank white video and when I apply the effect they render as blank white video.
    Here's my video config:
    Chipset Model: ATY,RADEON

    Quartz Extreme: Supported
    After reading this page:
    http://www.apple.com/support/imovie/hottips/
I see that the Quartz Composer effects are supported only for Core Image supported video cards. I think that means I'm out of luck. It seems odd that the effects still attempt to render and be applied even if my system doesn't support them. Is something wrong with my installation, or is this expected behavior?
I've seen statements here on the discussions that Quartz Extreme should enable effects like the ripple when opening or closing Dashboard Widgets. My card does support Quartz Extreme but I do not see the ripples. I'm guessing that it's actually Core Image that produces those effects and that's why I don't see them. Is that a correct guess?
I guess I'm confused over the difference between Quartz Extreme and Core Image.
Thanks for clearing up my confusion...

Quartz Extreme, as I understand it, is used by OS X for drawing windows
That is true. Quartz Extreme is a special, hardware accelerated instance of Quartz. Quartz is OS X's native drawing environment. When Quartz Extreme is not supported, Quartz will be used instead.
Quartz Composer is something else that builds on Quartz. It appears it requires Core Image. Core Image is a set of graphics routines that allow image manipulation (if you have the developer package installed, you can also find an application called 'Quartz Composer' that you can use to define effects, screensavers etc).
Core Image also intents to leverage your GPU. Apple's Documentation alleges that if there is no GPU available it will use the CPU instead. Theoretically, your Mac should support Core Image. Yet...
    From Dennis' System specs:
    Core Image: Not Supported
This may be the reason why you can't use these effects in iMovie. Because of shortcomings in iMovie's plug-in API, the plug-ins may still show up in the f/x panel - they simply will not function when selected.
Perhaps a later version of OS X enables CoreImage on all Macs?
    Hope this helps,

  • Cheapest Quartz Extreme card?

What's the cheapest AGP graphics card I can get for my 450 Mhz Sawtooth Power Mac G4 that supports quartz extreme? My Rage 128 Pro apparently isn't quartz extreme compatible and iMovie 06 doesn't work very well. What's the most affordable solution to this?

If I recall correctly, Quartz Extreme is only supported with AGP cards, not PCI. To get FCP to work you'll need to get an AGP card. As a suggestion for a card, here's a really nice one from Operator Headgap: (I've actually been seriously considering getting this, but I think I'll likely just pass on it since I bought a cheaper card from eBay.)
    http://stn2.headgap.com/resale/FMPro?-token=13415827&-db=ProductsC.fp3&-lay=WEB& -format=items.htm&-sortfield=SortID&-Max=40&category=monitors&-find
The price is pretty good for AGP graphics cards, and it has both Quartz Extreme and Core Image support (something which PCI graphics cards also don't support).

  • Core Image?

Hey, I've recently switched to mac after being disappointed with my old pc. So far it's been great and I'm thoroughly happy. I'm interested in graphics and use Photoshop, Image Ready and iPhoto. So to increase my graphics options I decided to use Core Imgage that I have heard and read about, however, a Spotlight search shows that I don't have it. So I'm wondering does Core Image come with 10.4.7? Or has something gone pear-shaped and for some reason i don't have it for whatever reason. If so, is there a place I can download it, as I've not seen anything on the Apple site.
    Thanks for any replies.

Mac OS X 10.4: Requirements for Quartz Extreme and Core Image graphics
If you're wondering what the video requirements are for Quartz Extreme and Core Image in Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, find out in this informative document.
Note: Quartz Extreme and Core Image are impressive video enhancements in Tiger that appear on fast Macs. But even if you have an older computer that can't use Quartz Extreme or Core Image, it can still run Tiger if it meets the system requirements. If you have a third-party video card installed, contact the card manufacturer to determine if it is Tiger-compatible.
    Quartz Extreme
Some appealing graphics effects, such as the "rotating cube" effect you see when using Fast User Switching to switch users, are powered by Quartz Extreme. Quartz Extreme uses OpenGL and a supported graphics card to reduce the number of onscreen calculations being performed by the CPU. To take advantage of Quartz Extreme, you need one of the following graphics cards:
ATI: Any AGP-based ATI RADEON GPU, with 16 MB VRAM or better.
NVIDIA: NVIDIA GeForce2 MX or later, with 16 MB VRAM or better.
    Core Image
Other graphics effects and optimizations in Tiger, such as the ripple effect that shows when you place a widget on Dashboard, are driven by Core Image. When a programmable GPU is present, Core Image uses the graphics card for image processing operations, freeing the CPU for other tasks. To take advantage of Core Image, you need one of the following graphics cards:
    ATI Mobility Radeon 9700
    ATI Radeon 9550, 9650, 9600, 9600 XT, 9800 XT, X800 XT
    nVidia GeForce FX Go 5200
    nVidia GeForce FX 5200 Ultra
nVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL, 6800 GT DDL
If you have a different card, contact the manufacturer for Core Image compatibility information.
    Verifying compatibility with System Profiler
With Mac OS X 10.4, you can use System Profiler to make sure your computer's GPU supports Quartz Extreme or Core Image.
Open System Profiler (it's in /Applications/Utilities, or, if started from the Tiger install disc, open it from the Utilities menu).
    Click "Graphics/Displays" under Contents.
In the right pane under "Display," look for the Quartz Extreme and Core Image lines; next to each, you will see either "Supported" or "Not Supported."

Just recently upgraded 10.5.8 to 10.6 and than updated over the internet to 10.6.1 The upgrading/updating process was smooth and fast lake a charm. Only one thing I noticed there is no more transparent menu bar in the system. I checked the box in the pref-desktop - doesn't help. Rebooted few times. Nothing. Even profile says that I don't have Quartz Extreme any more.
I had it before and it was working fine. What happened with my video card?

  • Radeon 9600 Pro - Quartz Extreme not supported? Help!

I've just got a Radeon 9600 Pro PC/Mac edition, as the 9600XT that came with the G5 died on me last week. It's taken an age to get it working, I could only boot in safe mode, in the end I deleted all my existing ATI extensions, installed the ATI Displays 4.5.7 and it works. BUT ... (and it's a big but)... performance is VERY slow and System Profiler says Core Image and Quartz Extreme are not supported. If anyone's got any ideas I'd be most grateful.
    Thanks. Richard.

    G4 Cube

OK here's the latest. I did an Archive and Install (keeping my users home folders, though), and when the G5 restarted after the install it hung - the grey screen with apple appears, the little cog rotates under the apple, then that freezes and, although you can hear the hard drive working for a little while, it gets no further.
So I booted in safe mode, which works fine - ran the 10.4.10 combo updater, reset PRAM and NVRAM, same again - won't boot. Then I installed the ATI drivers from their website - same again. I can only boot in safe mode.
So i'm back where I was when I first installed the card - the only way I could boot other than in safe mode was to delete all the ATI extensions from /System, after that it booted but reported Quartz Extreme and Core Image not supported.
ATI support still haven't replied to phone calls and emails from Monday. So I' kind of at my wits end with this. Surely if I can boot in safe mode there can't be a hardware issue with the card, can there? Could there be something wrong with my AGP slot??
    Any ideas gratefully received.

  • New Nehalem XServe doesn't have Quartz Extreme?

I have a new Nehalem with 2x 2.93GHz Quad-Core (16 cores total) with the standard NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 256MB Graphics card. For some reason Final Cut Server 1.1.1 and now 1.5 doesn't believe this server has Quartz Extreme and refuses to install. For that matter, Compressor also refuses to open for the same reason.
What I have to do is go to a previous generation Xserve, do the install on the hard drive, then move that hard drive back to the Nehalem. So other than Compressor not opening, the Xserve is behaving normally with Final Cut Server near as I can tell.
Any ideas what's up with this Xserve? I've reduced the display to as low as 800x600 with no change.
    thanks.

You need to have a display connected for it to register that it is Quartz Extreme capabilities. Get a displayport to VGA or DVI adapator and hook up a monitor. With the previous intel boxes with the mini-dvi connector it was enough to just have the the dongle that came with the server plugged in at startup to get it to register Quartz Extreme. I am not sure if plugging in the display port adaptor with nothing else on the other end will work as all my installs and servers as of late have all had KVM switches. But the concept is still the same. The video card has to see something on the other end before it registers.

  • Logic 9 Quartz Extreme Error

    Hi,
I just bought a brand new mac pro (quad core with Nvidia graphics card) and also a brand new copy of logic studio 9. When i click on the installation icon it says i dont have 'quartz extreme' and can not install logic?! It did not mention any of this on the system requirements on the package. any idea of what to do?
    cheers

thanks for the response guys.. I ended up fixing the problem late last night.. I do have the latest version of OSX and i still dont know why that error message came up.
however, what i did do, i went to the system preferences and changed the resolution, and then changed it back to the default resolution and it worked no problem. then i t took me like 3 hours to install the 456 DVDs for logic LOL..

    Hi Leek Mibles;
May I welcome you to the Apple Discussion Forums.
The reason your system is telling you it can do Core Image is because it doesn't have the hardware to support it. Since your system is a PowerBook, you are unable to upgade the graphic card because it is soldered in. So I am sorry to say that the only way for you to get Core Image is to upgrade your whole system.

  • MacBook and Quartz Extreme

Does the new MacBook have Quartz Extreme? I don't see anything specific in the specs or prose, and a recent Tech Note said that you have to have QE in order to use iMovie HD. The article listed supported graphics cards, and did NOT mention the Intel "integrated" adapter.

There have been a few reports on here where Corsair RAM seems to have caused users a lot of grief with crashes.
The recommendation on here, mostly, is to only buy RAM from macsales.com or crucial.com as they guarantee their modules will work and offer a no quibble lifetime guarantee.
I'd put the original RAM back in, return the Corsair chips for a refund and re-order from one of those two companies.

  • New GFX card, Quartz Extreme error, and suddenly FCP 6 will not run. Help me fix this problem please!

Model Name: Mac Pro Model Identifier: MacPro1,1 Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon Processor Speed: 3 GHz Number Of Processors: 2 Total Number Of Cores: 4 L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB Memory: 7 GB Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz
My old GFX card nVidia GeForce 7300GT which is busted.
I replaced it with a nVidia NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500 from a Mac Pro of the same generation.
I'm now getting a Quartz Extreme error whenever I try to run Final Cut Pro 6 or Compressor. "This system does not meet the following minimum requirements: Final Cut Pro 6 requires that your system have a Quartz Extreme capable video card."
Well, I checked the specs of the card and it does support Quartz Extreme. So why isn't FCP 6 running?
Looking under the System Profiler > Graphics/Displays, it doesn't say the Cinema HD Display supports Quartz Extreme, but how could that be, because the Quadro 4500's specs online says it does?!! This was the better GFX card made for the same generation of Mac Pro but somehow doesn't work!
This is also effecting my DVD player App with an error: "A valid video device could not be found for playback: -70017". Which has never happened before either.
I've researched online and can't find anything that works.
The card has power running to it and the monitor is hooked into the closest DVI port to the logic board which most of people with the same problem have done to fix this. I've also gone into the Disk Utility and ran both Verify and Repair permissions and the same for the boot disk.
Nothing. I'm stumped. Short of trying to flash the ROM on the GFX card I'm not sure what to do. And I'm not comfortable doing that. Help please?
I'm using Final Cut Pro 6 and subsequent older versions of Motion and Compressor, not FCP X or companion series.
    HELP!!!!

  • Quartz Extreme not showing up on stock Mac Pro and card

I have purchased a new Mac Pro and LED Cinema Display from the Apple store last month. Safari Top Sites is not working and the "help" stated I need Quartz Extreme. Looked in the profile, but it is not listed in the list on the right at all. It is a stock apple card and display.
Is my monitor video card not even capable of using this feature or do I need to reinstall the system or something??

With Snow Leo basically if you can't get quartz extreme you shouldn't be running 10.6.x
Easy way to tell if it is working though would be that your menu bar across the entire top of the screen is transparent, or if you add a widget to dashboard you will get the ripple effect. If you are on a system where Quartz Extreme is disabled you will not get those effects.

  • I cannot open iMovie - it says I need a "Graphics card that is compatible with Quartz Extreme" I know this is wrong- Have iMovie version 9.0.4, regularly use it and have not had this problem before

Details: On my MacBook Pro, I have MacOS X 10.6.8, a 2.26 GHz IntelCore Duo processor with 4 GB 1067 MHz DOR 3 Memory.
I have iMovie Version 9.0.4, which I apparently updated inJuly.  I regularly used iMovie, and last used it about 3 weeks ago.  However, Today, when I try to get into iMovie, I get thefollowing message:
“Quartz extreme Required  iMovie requires agraphics card that is compatible with Quartz Extreme.  One or more of your graphics cards does ntosupport Quartz Extreme.”
So, I cannot get into my iMovie.  I know the “Quartz Extreme” message ismistaken.  WHAT DO I DO?

I would recommend that you turn off and restart your Mac. That should clear it up.
