Quartz filters in Colorsync Utility to improve print quality

I have trying to improve my printed output. I have set up my camera and iPhoto to get accurate, known colour into my system. I have also installed a custom profile for my printer which improved the colours considerably but the prints were still a little dark.
To fix this, I created a new Quartz filter in Colorsync Utility using the Brightness intermediate transform. My problem is that the Brightness transform has three unmarked, uncalibrated sliders. I think the middle one is brightness and the last one is contrast but I'm only guessing.
Anyone know what the sliders actually do?
This post is probably a bit cryptic in an attempt to keep it brief and cut to my problem but I've spent a lot of time getting to this point and I am happy to answer any questions on the other steps in the process for others who are further down the Colorsync learning curve.

Hello Bruce,
I ran this one by a couple of the 'colour specialists' in the office. One thought the sliders may be for R, G & B but they were guessing and we spent some time searching for an answer but found nothing. We even tried to look at some of the existing profiles, such as Sepia, but found them to be locked and not viewable. Anyway, you've got them intrigued so I think they'll work this one out for you soon, unless someone else knows the answer already.

  • Custom color filters in ColorSync Utility

I have an image that i made a awhile ago but i want to change it to match the color scheme of my website im making. So wanted to change the color scheme or scale of the image (like gray, blue, sepia) but i dont want to use one of these i want to make a custom one. Is there a way to do this in ColorSync ?
I also tried using Core Image funhouse but i cant save it as a bmp, jpeg or any other image ext. other then funhouse.
If you have any solutions to my problem they would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance

You could use the tools in Preview. You could download GraphicConverter. There are probably hundreds of methods, depending on your needs.

  • How to improve print quality from PSE9 on Mac?

Is there a combination of various options in the Photoshop Elements 9’ and the HP Photosmart (C7180) printer’s dialogue boxes (on a Mac, OS 16) that would result in acceptable photo prints? I’ve browsed around in both the corresponding HP and the Adobe forums and found numerous inquiries with similar problems. Thus, this issue may impact larger audience. Therefore, I am describing my problem in more details below with the hope that someone will offer a satisfactory resolution:
I’ve used earlier versions of Photoshop Elements in a Windows environment to print photos on my HP printer – with quite good results. I wanted to improve quality, so I bought a Mac (after all, “Mac’s forte is graphics, photos, etc.”, isn’t it?) and also upgraded to Photoshop Element 9. Well, to say that the result is a disappointment would be a great understatement. I’ve wasted countless hours, ink and paper in trying different PSE - printer options combinations. The prints are not even close to the quality that I used to get with my earlier setup. Is it possible that a conflict exists between the PSE’s and the printer’s Color Management?
In my earlier setup (under Windows), there was an explicit option to turn Color Management off if I wanted PSE to manage colors (which I still want). In the Mac version of the printer menu I do not find this option (although PSE 9 still gives a warning: "Did you remember to disable color management in the printer preference dialog?"). In the PSE 9 print dialogue box (under “Color Management” – “Color Handling” in “More Options…”), there are three options: “Printer Manages Color”, “Photoshop Elements Manages Colors” and “No Color Management”. In the printer’s dialogue box, there are only two options: “ColorSync” and “Vendor Matching”. There is no “Printer Color Management off” – as it was under Windows setup. Anyway, these options seem to be irrelevant, because they are predefined in accordance with selections in PSE. If either the second or third options is selected in PSE, the “ColorSync” button is preselected in the grayed out Printer dialogue box. If the first option (“Printer Manages Color”) selected, the “Vendor Matching” is preselected in the grayed out HP Printer dialogue box.  Of course, I do NOT want the printer to manage color.
Thus, is there any way to turn of the printer’s color management if I want Photoshop Element to manage color? Is it necessary (or “ColorSync” automatically takes care of that)?
Anyway, this is all very confusing. The bottom line is: Is there a combination of various options in the PSE9’s and the HP Photosmart printer’s dialogue boxes (on a Mac OS 16) that would result in acceptable photo prints? What would be this combination?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hello
I wonder if you ever solved this problem.
I have a very similar problem with Photoshop CS5 on Mac OSX 10.6 + HP Photosmart C7180.
If I choose "Photoshop Manages Colors" the results are lousy.
If I choose "Printer Manages Colors" the results are OK. not necessarily great.
I believe I have all the correct settings after going through books and web advice (and wasted a lot of paper and ink).
As far as I can see, "ColorSync" is the internal Mac management which is the only option available with "Photoshop Manages Colors" and "Vendor Matching" appears to mean the printer vendor (ie HP) will provide the matching. Either can be selected if "Printer Manages Colors" is used. It seems the type of paper can be set in three different places. if That's all a bit academic as the results are poor regardless.
My wife suggests I buy a new printer - Epson's looking good.
Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.

  • How to improve print quality of 3D Graphs

    Hello,
I’m using LabView 3D graphs (ActiveX) and when printing they look too pixelized.
Does anybody know how to print nicer 3D graphs?
    Thanks
    LV 2011, Win7

    Hi Darren and others,
I didn't think more about problem with quality of printing because I hadn't time. But now I must finish my work.
The problem is that the pixelization appears when making picture as well (JPEG, PNG, BMP). Just try. It looks horrible.
Any ideas how to obtain nicer picture? I need at least something like attached matlab_picture.png. I'm especially confused with the quality of the axes and "support lines".
Is there any other way how to export images to get what I really see in the moment, just like printscreen function (but only on graph)?
I don't understand how can someone be satisfied with the quality of 3D graph pictures :-(
Thank all for quick help, I really need it. I developed sophisticated application but it looks unusable because none can work with such low-quality outputs.

  • Bugs in PDF workflow/ Quartz Filters?

I've  noticed several issues with PDF workflows in Lion that seem to have gone wrong. Whether deliberately or not, I don't know.
    1. If you Export a PDF from Preview with a Quartz Filter, that filter is not applied to the copy of the PDF in Preview's window, though the file on disk does get the filter applied. If you close and reload the PDF, the effects of filter will be displayed.
    2. If you create a new Quartz Filter in ColorSync Utility, it doesn't work.
Even duplicating an existing system filter, like "Gray Tone", doesn't work when you apply it to a PDF document in ColorSync Utility.
    3. If you do have any user quartz filters, they don't show up in Preview's Export file dialog, unless you copy them from ~/Library/Filters to ~/Library/PDF Services.
There are several webpages about this.
    4. Save As PDF-X has disappeared from the PDF button of the print menu.
I have seen other webpages that mention this.
All these issues are on both of my Macs, so I don't think it's a local problem, though I would be grateful for any confirmation.

    Thanks Benwiggy for that tip.
I am still running Snow Leopard due to things dropped in Lion.
I needed fax capability before I could move to Lion.
I was also waiting for the bugs to get worked out because I will lose some time when changing over.
I still have the menu item with Snow Leopard but the work flow for PDF-X is now broken as well.
I have not always had Acrobat pro.
I am famialure with inserting, extracting, and typing information on PDF documents as one would need to do in an office.
I had always used preview and the PDF-X "save as" feature to embed fonts.
I see there is a save as format to  "PDF/X" in Acrobat Pro v9.0.
There is a settings button next to the save as box.
It has four different settings or flavors of PDF/x:
    PDF/X-1a
    PDF/X-3
    PDF/X-4
    PDF/X-4p.
Then there is a conversion box that allows input of a "conversion profile".
There there is a viewing or printing condition box as well.
As you can see I don't work with colors much.  It is all about preserving the text and images in a document as everything is usually black and white or grey scale.
What setting for PDF/X would you suggest if "font" embedding was an issue and it was desirable to preserve the text and images as they were, without regard to color correcton.
Thanks in advance for your reply.

  • Print quality.

    HI all.
Is there any way to improve print quality on iPad?
The same photo on PC prints well via Phtoshop Elements to HP Photosmart AirPrint printer.
From the iPad 4, the colours are harsh and unnatural, and quality is generally poor.
    Same problem on iPad 2.
    CC.

Hello @Strander and welcome to the HP Forums
Just to clarify, are you getting these lines when printing from the Mac or when making a Copy/doing a Scan?
If it's when you're printing, please try the steps within this Fixing Print Quality Problems for the HP ENVY 5530 e-All-in-One and Deskjet Ink Advantage 4510 e-All... document and it should help get rid of anything unwanted.
If the lines are happening when Copying or Scanning, please get a paper towel with some water (or glass cleaner like Windex) and wipe down the glass. If you're not really sure where to focus your cleaning, just line the page up with the glass and see where the lines are and focus your cleaning there
Let me know how this goes for you!

  • Colorsync Utility. Whenever I click on Devices or Filters, it hangs and I have to force quit. Any ideas as to how to fix this?

I'm having an issue with Colorsync Utility. When I open the utility I can access Profile First Aid, Profiles and the Calculator but whenever I click on Devices or Filters, it hangs and I have to force quit. I recently re-profiled my NEC monitor using xRite i1Profiler Pro and saved the ICC profile as "version 4". When I went to use the Nik's ColorEfex Pro 4 plug-in, in Adobe Photodhop CS5.1 (Creative Suite 5.5), I got a cyan cast across all my images. Nik said it had to do with a corrupt ICC profile but when I ran Profile First Aid, the only profile that came up as needing repair ( and couldn't) was EW-sRGB. I reprofiled the monitor only this time I saved it as "version 2", and the plug-in worked fine. What surprises me is that Colorsync Utilty always used to work without issue, and I never seemed to have a problem creatinga and saving ICC profiles using version 4. Any ideas as to what is causing this problem and  how to fix this?
    Thanks.
    James

I updated my software, and deleted my history/cache.  Also, when I try to use Preview, it says that it was forced to quit while restoring windows, so when I click restore windows nothing happens.  I can't view anything either.  The only thing I can think that may have caused these problems is I tried to shut down and had to force it to by holding the power button.  I rarely shut it off.

  • Can't print pdf attachment- ColorSync Utility

Recently something "new" has developed with my laptop. I don't know if it was part of an update, but now when i get an email with a pdf document attachment, I can open it and look at it, and I see now a "format" display that is ColorSync Utility, but there is no obvious way to print it out.
    What gives?

    I called Apple for help.
To make a long story short, it appears that a week or two ago, when I was sending a lot of old files I no longer needed to the trash, that somehow "preview" got sent there too.
Once the technician (she had to call in the tech manager who got on the phone) figured out things, I had to drag "preview" out of the trash and put it back into applications. ONce that happened, things worked normally.
What was happening is that normally the pdf would open in preview, but without preview there in applications, the computer selected ColorSync Utility to open it. CSU does not have a way to print, hence the problem.

  • Quartz Filters Not Working Mavericks

I have a Mac Book Air running the latest OS. I created a document in Pages 5. Printed it to PDF then opened it in Preview to apply the Grey Tone filter. I export it and choose the filter, but it doesn't apply. I can't apply any filters, at all.
    Any ideas?

    I found this work-around:
The solution I realized involves the following:
Right click the PDF file you desire to work with and then select "Open with..."
    Select the "Colorsync Utility" application
The Colorsync Utility will open up with your PDF file
At the bottom of Colorsync Utility status bar, you can select the quartz filter you wish to apply (including any custom ones you made)
    Press "Apply"
    Save the document
I hope this workaround can hold up for now. I do admit I miss the ability to see and use my quartz filters right out of preview.
    Take care.

  • How does one add a device to ColorSync Utility

I was wondering how one can add a "device" to ColorSync Utility? It seems all my "other" devices are showing up, such as my printer (which also has scanning capabilities).  However, I'm not seeing my i800 Microtek Scanner, "renamed" as ScanPotter anywhere, yet IS in my "Utilities" folder, and no doubt this could be the reason why everytime I scan a photo from a print, negative or slide I'm getting annoying "pop-ups" to install Xll Quartz, which IS already installed.  Also I plan to install the new PhotoElements 11...am I going to have a problem with that as well

Maybe it needs to be in Applications?

  • Problem Mountain lion, Pages PDF and Quartz filters

    Hello,
With some PDF file created with Pages (iWork 4.2) in Moutain Lion, Quartz Filter don't work.
    Example :
    - Create a new doc with template "Personnal News" ("Nouvelles Personnelles in french) in "Newsletter"
    - Print dialog, "PDF" button "Open PDF with Preview"
    - In Preview, export in PDF with filter "Gray Tone"
--> Problem : The PDF created is not in "Gray tone" but in color
--> Same problems with others Quartz Filter, they do anything
    - With template "School" ("Lycée" in French) --> Final PDF is a mix of color and gray tone !
    - With template "Extrems Sports" (Sports Extremes in french) --> No problem, quartz filters works
If i create the PDF with page export and use "Preview" (or Color Sync utility"), Do a PDF export with  a Quartz filters.
    --> same problem
No problem with same manipulations before Mountain Lion (in Lion, ...). I think it's a Moutain Lion bug but it's very strange!
    Has anyone noted this bug?
Is anyone know a solution to this pb?
    Thanks
    Note :
    - I have the problem with a simple update of Lion in Moutain Lion and after a clean install of Moutain Lion.
    - I have a boot disk with 10.5 Leopard and if i open the pdf file with Preview, the PDF file exported with quartz filter is ok.

I think it's a Moutain Lion bug, i hope it will be fixed in the next update of Moutain Lion...
But, i have found a workaround for this issue.
With a PDF file with this problem :
    - Open the PDF with "Preview"
    - Print, button "PDF", "Save to PostScript Format"
    - Open the PS file with "Preview" --> Conversion to format PDF
    - Save the PDF file
    - Reopen this PDF file with Preview
--> Export can be do with Quartz filter (sometime with filter "Gray Tone", Preview crach, but with filter "Reduce File size", no problem
--> If a use "PDF Clerk Pro" to export this PDF with quartz filter, all filters work.

  • Color management issues with colorsync utility

    hi all,
I'm trying to properly color manage my workflow from camera to monitor to printer and I read through the entire manual on the "colorsync utility" which is supposed to do this.  That's an hour of my life I'll never get back.  Anyway the color is different on my camera's screen from my computer monitor and the final output is radically different.
I've used the ICC profile for my camera (Canon Rebel XT) and I've visually callibrated my monitor.  I'm using a Canon IP 4600 with a continuous ink system (non OEM ink).
What I need to know is how do I change the color space visually?  What I mean is without spending hundreds on colorometers etc.  I know how to manually callibrate my computer monitor, but how do I ensure that my camera matches my screen and how do I compensate for the non OEM ink?
    thanks for any help

    Dougfly,
Only an hour wasted? Lucky you. Color is an incredibly complex subject. First, forget matching anything to the small LCD on the back of your camera. That's there as a basic guide and is affected by the internal jpg algorithm of your camera.
2nd, you're not really takeing a color photo with your digital camera, but three separate B&W images in a mosaic pattern, exposed thru separate red, green and blue filters. Actual color doesn't happen until that matrix is demosaiced in either your raw converter, or the in-camera processor (which relies heavily on camera settings, saturation, contrast, mode, etc.)
Having said the above, you can still get very good, predictable results in your workflow. I have a few color management articles on my website that you might find very helpful. Check out the Introduction to Color Management and Monitor and Printer Profiling. In my opinion, a monitor calibration device is the minimum entry fee if you want decent color.

  • Colorsync utility problems

I'm trying to get my printing straightened out on a 10.4.11 system that has been updated from 10.3.9.
Printing was perfect on 10.3.9, but is not good from the Adobe apps on 10.4.11. I put off upgrading to 10.4 as long as I could, because I knew so many folks had so many issues... I finally had to upgrade, and now I am hit.
My printer is an epson R2400. Prints are as expected from a MacBook Pro that has never been upgraded from one system to the next, and also from a test installation of 10.4.11 on a brand new hard drive. It is only the upgraded (via archive and install) system that I can't get straightened out.
Chromix is making some custom profiles for me, and they had me go into colorsync utility to assign Generic RGB as the default profile for the printer. Problem is, the R2400 is listed 3 separate times in Colorsync utility, although it is only listed once in Printer SetUp utility and in System preferences under printing and fax.
Resetting the printing system doesn't clear this up, nor does uninstalling the driver and reinstalling.
I don't know for certain that this is the cause of my color management issues, but it certainly does not seem desirable. The systems on the machines that print correctly do not have duplicate instances of the printer listed in colorsync utility.
I am not able to set a default printer in Colorsync utility, presumably due to this problem. This is the only printer installed, and it is listed as default the other 2 places.
An archive and install did not fix the issue.
Any idea on how to clear this up short of totally starting over with a fresh installation, from scratch? the printers are listed with unique ID's in Colorsync utility, but I don't know how to run anything down from there.

I am not printing with colorsync color management, rather I am using colorsync *utilty* to correct a misapplied color profile in the driver.
This is documented a few places on the web, and it is Chromix's answer to incorrect prints from ALL the Adobe applications... in my case, PS 7, and ALL CS2 and CS3 suite applications. Very specifically, the print error happens with Photoshop 7 and CS2 and CS3, and Illustrator CS2 and CS3, and InDesign CS2 and CS3. The solutions it to be certain that in your print stream, when you check the details of how the print is being sent, that colorsync is set to standard conversion, generic RGB profile, no quartz filter. The way you typically mange this, if the wrong RGB profile is showing, is by resetting it in ColorSync utility.
I am printing a a profiling target, so I am not setting up a conversion from source space to print space. I am sending with color management off.
The reason I didn't mention my workflow settings is that is not the question. The question is how to get rid of the spare printer instances in colorsync utility, becasue i think they are hosing my otherwise correct color settings.
My target print looks like it is being color managed incorrectly, even though all color management is disabled in the Photoshop print dialog and in the print driver. The colors are the correct hue, but they are much too dark.
Chromix has a little application you can print the targets from. Photoshop (all versions) on the system with the colorSync utility problem prints the target too dark compared to the Chromix utility, or to Photoshop on two other systems I have with no colorSync utility duplication of printers.
Again, I am not looking for help with my printing workflow, because that is not the question or problem. My prints are correct on other systems with the same version of software and the same print settings, as long as I can make the needed correction in Colorsync utility first.
the question is how to reset colorsync utility, or otherwise troubleshoot the erroneous feedback it is giving me..

  • Quartz filters are not working (for PDF)

It seems that quartz filters are not working for me under Mountin Lion. I have tried to export, print, etc everything in Preview, Automator, ColorSync. It simply won't apply the filters to my PDFs.
Anyone experienced similar issues? Is it a known bug?

I kinda have the same problem, except its only my custom filters that aren´t working in ColorSynch. The other filters get applied as usual, but I can not change any of the preformed filters within ColorSynch, and the "live update from filter inspector" doesn´t work if I try to apply changes or use my custom filters.
The custom filters I have, were created prior to my upgrade from snow leopard to moutain lion.
I´ve understood that there has been multiple problems with the filters in lion ++
If there isn´t a quick fix to this, does anybody know of any programs I can use to apply filters without having to buy Adobe Pro, my use is not for simply decreasing file size, but mostly for editing colors prior to prinitng. And its  not sufficient to use the preformed filters unfortunately.
