Query re Photoshop interface - can PS on Mac look like PS on Windows?

Hi all,
For various reasons I've just switched to the Mac platform after many years using Windows.
I've become very used to Photoshop being 'full screen' i.e. a toolbar at the top of a window that isn't transparent - I can't see the desktop background through the Photoshop window.
On Mac, however, Photoshop is a toolbar at the top and my desktop background and other applications are visible when Photoshop has focus.
Is there a way of configuring Photoshop so that it looks the same as Windows?
Please don't take offense that I want it to look this way - I have no allegiance to either Windows or OS X but I do like the way I'm used to working.

Ever since I started using CS4 I don't see a difference between the two other than the grey workspace background in Windows. If I want that too, I use the application frame as described above.
I'm back and forth between Mac and Windows all day. Using identical 23" monitors in separate rooms. as long as I have enough screen to work with, I'm happy.

Security - pop up ads coming up on my mac - looking like it's mac security

Hello, pop up ads coming up on my mac -
For the first time in 4 years, My mac is getting ads (looking like mac windows) for 'anti'malware' and ads (looking like mac) saying that I have viruses and to download to erase them. I have seen this twice this week. It is NOT from mac protection (although it looks like your computer and HD). This is happening in firefox - what can I do to block this??? (i already have blocked suspicious sites, etc)?
I called Mac - they said this is malicious software and has been happening in the last 2 weeks - to not download anything (which I hadn't) and that they ask for a credit card number and download possible viruses.
I changed something in my system preferences in safari - but use firefox usually - is there anything I can do in safari to not get these??

Firefox would not automatically open a downloaded file that could start a software installation, as far as I know. The file would be saved and you would need to open it manually, as a Firefox user mentioned here:

You can do other things to keep safe online with Firefox, such as making sure all your plugins are up to date by visiting www.mozilla.com/plugincheck/ and disable any plugins in Firefox that you aren't using, via "Tools -> Add-ons -> Plugins" . See [[Troubleshooting plugins]] for more info.

Luckily, disabling and removing the bogus MacDefender application is easy. If you have been infected and want to make sure it no longer resides on your system, follow the steps below:
#To ensure you do not automatically download the app, uncheck the following: Safari > Preferences > General > uncheck “Open “safe” files after downloading”.
#Searching for the application and deleting it directly may fail, saying the app is in use. To stop it running, check Activity Monitor (in Applications > Utilities) and disable anything that relates to MacDefender.
#Look in /Library/StartupItems and, same place, LaunchAgents and LaunchDaemons for references to the malware app.
#Once quit, head to the Applications folder and drag the MacDefender app to the trash, then delete trash.
#To ensure all references to the app are cleared, run a search using Spotlight and delete all MacDefender references you find.
The removal of the app is somewhat easier than on Windows, mainly thanks to the security of the Mac OS X operating system. The malware looks to proliferating off the back of attacks on websites that are serving images on Google Images – it is recommended that you browse safely, utilising other image searches for the time being.

During installation of the NI-VISA 2.01 driver I get an error that tells me that my file (NICVISA.DPT) doesnt look like a tar archive. How can I make it look like a tar archive or is that not the solution to the problem?

I am trying to install the NI-VISA 2.01 driver I downloaded from the NI website on a HP-UX 10.2 platform, but it keeps giving me the following error:
tar: /var/spool/sw/NICVISA.DPT: This doesnt look like a tar archive.
I also get errors telling me that files can't be loaded because their missing from source media. What could be causing this? Some of the files are msgrt4.txt,ni7seg24.bdf,ni7seg26, etc... Can these needed files be downloaded anywhere or is the problem linked to the tar archive scenario..

The files were corrupt. Originally I had downloaded the driver files to my PC and used FTP to transfer them to my UNIX machine.
Your tech support rep. suggested I download the driver files via ftp.ni.com to my UNIX machine vs. the PC...this worked great. I am now communicating with my instrument

Painting runs the gamut from, say, house-painting to Jan van Eyck, with stops along way for Ellsworth Kelly, Willem de Kooning, and even that electrifier of turds, Thomas Kincade.
You might be able to mimic a few of these with the tools in Aperture. What do you have in mind?

I was fortunately able to apply on a Windows machine (using Firefox - take that, Staples!); but if a corporation such as Staples is willing to use this kind of annoying platform blocking, I'm liable to encounter it in the future. Well, they're not exactly losing custom since it's a job application, but in priciple I'm with Thomas. There's no excuse for locking out non-MS browsers these days (if there ever was). Hell, my bank is completely unconcerned about me using Konqueror; why should Staples be so fussy?
There is something strangely satisfying in getting round these restrictions, though. "Not supported, eh? I'll show you what's not supported, you CENSOREDs."

I don't want to just reinstall the older version, since I'll be constantly refusing update requests and will lose any new security updates. I just want to have the layout I had before FF changed it without informing me in advance. Otherwise I will switch to a different browser. I'm a patient man, so I will give FF 24 hours to correct this unwanted annoyance before switching over to the competition.

I was wondering becuase if you can put WINDOWS XP on a Mac, then can u it be the other way around?

Please read the license agreement that came with Mac OS X. It only allows you to install on an Apple Macintosh. If there was a method to install Mac OS X on an Intel PC like a Dell or HP, we couldn't tell you how on this board, as Terms of Use strictly prohibit potentially illegal discussion.
Furthermore, installing on a PC, you don't get the great software/hardware integration Apple has developed with its software (no other PC maker makes its own operating system), and Apple uses a different Boot ROM, that even Microsoft professes it won't have support for in Vista. Though some Virtualization solutions have managed to run the Vista betas on the new Intel Macs.
Any upgrades to Mac OS X may have further changes in drivers that the PC maker would not have anticipated, thus making any installation you try on a PC only temporarily work if at all.
Macs that can run XP start at only $600 new. And used and refurbished ones cost less. I've listed many of the possible solutions to run XP on a Mac here:

I tried to copy 2,000 photos from iPhoto (v9.2) to Photoshop Elements 13 Organizer. It looked like they all copied, but then I got a crash report that the program had unexpectedly quit. I can't get back in to remove any photos. What do I do now?

I have repeatedly tried to re-open PE13 Organizer with no luck. The first time there was a message that the catalog was being organized and then it crashed. From that time on, I only get a crash message that it unexpectedly quit. How can I get the photos off the organizer so I can open it back up again? Thanks!

Close computer down, and restart. If it does not work, it should, then re-install. But, do not attempt more than 200 at a time it just cannot handle it ?

Ps. I just dislike Organiser, (it is too slow, and disorganised) you can go from PE 13 Editor ( My wife tried it and went back to PE 6 ) and Process Multiple Files only 200 at a time. in Photoshop Elements, Organizer may handle it ?
We often do video production stills of 2,000 from PE 6 and we know it works ,when you use the images in Adobe CS5.5.2 Premiere Pro..for HD & Blue -ray transfers.. It is very easy ?

Can I open Mac InD files on a Windows Machine?

I've found a template by Mike Singleton in the InD Exchange for the Xerox FlipBook Paper. The download is Mac but I need to open it with Win InD (CS4).
If it's possible, what are the steps?

Edit: OK, now I read the first post, too. I've actually downloaded and and opened that template on CS4 in Windows, and it works fine. Not, however, a lot of instruction to go with it. There's a video on the Xerox site you'll want to download and study carefully to help you figure out what goes where.

Photoshop Elements 13 tutorial does not look like the version I have. Help?

I recently got Photoshop Elements 13 because I believed it function somewhat like Photoshop, but cheaper. The moment I opened it, I noticed the interface was completely different. So, I clicked on the link for the beginners tutorial in eLive, which sent me to this link: Get Started with Photoshop Elements 13 - YouTube
However, the one in the video shown above looks slightly different from mine, making it difficult to follow along. On the top bar in the video, it goes from eLive>Media>People>Places>Events. The one I am using goes from eLive>Quick>Guided>Expert.
Could someone help me fix this so I could follow along the video instead of learning by myself?

Photoshop Elements comes in two main parts. You are looking at the Editor part, the video is showing the Organizer part.
Either select Organizer from the bottom toolbar of your screen or go to the Welcome screen and select Organizer.

You see the orange (on Linux gray) Firefox button if the Menu Bar is hidden, so you need to hide the Menu bar via View > Toolbars, also accessible via Firefox > Options.<br />
If you need to access the hidden Menu bar then press F10 or hold down the Alt key to make the Menu Bar appear temporarily.<br />
You can place the Tab Bar on top.
