Quesion regarding "allow this network to be extended"

All,
Please excuse my dumb question. checking the box marked "allow this network to be extended" is a setting only used when adding another Airport router and will not increase range otherwise?
sorry to sound dumb, just trying to educate myself.

Bob,
Thanks so much for your help. I had read through info that lead me to believe that, but I needed the plain plain english version. sorry.
Can I pester you on another question?
As I am newish to the airport extreme (802.11n) we have an imac, hp pavilion, wii w/ netflix streaming account, and use radio apps on our blackberries. If i increase the multicast rates will this help or hurt? Conceptually I am hoping it will increase speed to netflix. but it could cause problems right?

  • HT4259 KB article is out of date--how do you "allow this network to be extended" on AirPort Utility 6.x?

The current KB article about extending wireless networks is out of date--how do you "allow this network to be extended" on AirPort Utility 6.x? These instructions describe v. 5.x.

In my case, the option was required, so the problem was that it wasn't available. When I used v6.2 to extend the network on the secondary AP Express, it gave an error saying the network couldn't be extended.
Once I booted Snow Leopard from an external drive, I was able to follow the instructions in HT4259 with v5. Once I checked the "allow this network to be extended" on the primary AP Express, the secondary AP Express started extending the network as it should.
While v5 of the AirPort Utility is available for download, it won't work on Mountain Lion, so this solution wouldn't work for most people, who don't keep old operating systems lying around.

  • "Allow this network to be extended" has disappeared from latest Airport Utility

I bought the new Airport Timecapsule (the vertical one) and have the latest version of the Airport Utility. Under "Create a wirless netwrk" there used to be a checkbox that said "Allow this network to be extended" As best I can tell, that option no longer exists (at least with the latest Airport Timecapsule). How does one extend this network? I have been using another Airport to extend my network and would like to continue extending it.

"Allow this network to be extended" is automatically enabled (and hidden) in the newer versions of AirPort Utility 6.x, so there is no setting needed for this.
The setup to "extend" is now much easier to configure with AirPort Utility 6.x compared to previous versions of AirPort Utility.
What device will you be using to "extend" the network?  Do you plan to "extend" wirelessly, or "extend" by connecting the AirPort to the Time Capsule with an Ethernet cable?  (Much better performance with the wired connection if you are able).

  • Advice on setting up this network

I'm going to take apart my current network that is based on a CISCO router and make it into a roaming network based on the components listed below. I'm going to set the network up using a Mac.
Airport Extreme N (one of the earlier ones) - to be used as the main router
Airport Express N - to be used on the other side of my house to extend the length of my network, and to connect the Express to a HP printer so I can put the printer on the network. It will not be connected via ethernet cable.
D-Link Gigabit Switch - will connect to the Airport Extreme to provide additional ports for other devices
ATT Cellphone Extender - we get poor reception at my house so I needed to get one of these
Verizon Wireless Cellphone Extender - we get poor reception at my house so I needed to get one of these
    Xbox 360 - wireless
    Blu Ray player - wireless
    AppleTV - wireless
Several Mac and PC computers wireless and wired
CAT 6 cables - to connect my D-Link to my Extreme and to connect my ATT and Verizon wireless cellphone extenders to ethernet ports
    1. Before I get started with this, is there anything I'm missing or forgot about?
    2. Do I setup the Express in Extend a wireless network mode? Will this also allow me to use it to connect the printer?
    3. The Express will be located on the other side of my house, so the signal will already be somewhat weaker there, though there is nowhere conveinet to plug the Express into ethernet. Am I wasting my time by extending the network this way since the signal is already weaker by the time it gets to the Express?
    Thank you in advance!

    1. Before I get started with this, is there anything I'm missing or forgot about?
You appear to have all the necessary equipment. However, note that what you are proposing is not a form of a roaming network. That is because, a roaming network requires that all wireless routers/wireless access points be connected by Ethernet. Instead you are describing an extended wireless network.
    2. Do I setup the Express in Extend a wireless network mode? Will this also allow me to use it to connect the printer?
Yes, the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) would need to be configured for Wireless Mode: Extend a wireless network, and the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) would need to be configured such that the option: Allow this network to be extended, is enabled. Yes, this configuration would also allow you to share a printer to any client connected to either base station.
    3. The Express will be located on the other side of my house, so the signal will already be somewhat weaker there, though there is nowhere conveinet to plug the Express into ethernet. Am I wasting my time by extending the network this way since the signal is already weaker by the time it gets to the Express?
Potentially, due to the signal strength at the location you propose to place the AXn is not sufficient, the AXn cannot "boost" the bandwidth only the signal strength. What you will find is that wireless clients will "see" a strong signal, but have relatively poor data transfer rates. You may want to consider using Powerline adapters if you can't run Ethernet between the AEBSn & AXn. These type of adapters take advantage of your home's electrical circuit to create a pseudo Ethernet one. You can then configure both base stations for a roaming network and not have to be concerned about the signal strength.

  • Extend this network

How many devices can I use under the extend this network?
I understand that the base station (Airport Extreme) connected to the modem should we under “Create of a Wireless Network” and “allow this connection to be extended”. The extension device ( Airport Express 1) should be under “extend a wireless network”.
Can I extend from the extension device? i.e. Can I place another Airport Express (2) that connects to Airport Express 1?
How many devices could I extend?
Currently I have a WDS network, but I believe I’m loosing bandwidth.

From Apple's 'Designing AirPort Extreme Networks' pdf:
A main base station is connected to the Internet and shares its connection with remote
and relay base stations. A remote base station shares the main base station’s Internet
connection. A relay base station shares the main base station’s Internet connection and
transfers the connection to other remote or relay base stations.
All three base station configurations (main, remote, and relay) can also share the main
base station’s Internet connection with client computers wirelessly, or with Ethernet if
the client computers are connected to the base station or Ethernet.
I do not know the number of relay base stations that may exist in a chain but since a Relay base station can transfer its connection to other relay base stations, then you do know that at least 2 relay base stations can be involved which would then allow you the distance of 4 base stations in your network.

  • With my Airport Express, I can join the network but not extend it.

I just bought a new Airport Express to extend the network I have setup with my Airport Extreme.  At first, it seemed the Express was unable to get a correct IP address, I think because I had my DHCP server running from the cable modem, and the Extreme was just acting as a bridge.  I switched the Extreme to run a DHCP server and now the Express correctly receives an IP address.  However, it still tells me that it cannot extend the network, but gives no details why.  It just tells me to make sure I have the correct password and to be sure I am in range.
Clearly I am in range and have the correct password, because when I switch to "join network", all works fine.  Though when I do switch, I still get an amber blinking light and Airport Utility still thinks the Express is in Extend mode.  When I unplug and replug the Express, then it comes up with a green light and Airport Utility shows it in Join mode and all works fine.
I am thinking there might be something wrong with my Express and am considering exchanging it.  Just wondering if anyone has any ideas as to why this may be happening?
    Thanks.

However, it still tells me that it cannot extend the network, but gives no details why.
Suggest that you check your AirPort Extreme to make sure that you have enabled the wireless network to be extended.
Open AirPort Utility, select the AirPort Extreme, and click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the row of icons
Just under the setting for Wireless Network name......make sure that there is a check mark next to "Allow this network to be exended".
    Update to save changes
Now, try the configuration with the AirPort Express set to "Extend a wireless network"

  • HT4259 In Airport fireware 7.6.4 how do I extend my network... there is no longer the checkbox to allow this?

Airport firmware 7.6.4 when I select "Create Wireless Network" I can't set the network up to be extendable anymore, there is no related checkbox like in the instructions (yes I know it's old, but look at steps 7 and 8) http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4259 . This is more than annoying because I know both devices I have are capable as I've looked into it already on the internets.
    Airport Extreme A1408 (Base)
TimeCapsule 2TB (with airport extreme later version)
Neither allow you to create an extendable network by default with the new firmware. I saw a solution to roll back your firmware version, but I can't do that with Airport software V 6.3.1 which is what I have. And apple won't let me roll that back either... is the problem my local airport utility maybe? Is there another way?
I hope I'm just doing something silly and wrong and someone will just point out the checkbox I've been missing.

Extend wireless is simply no longer required as an option. Apple have assumed it will be extended and it is on by default.
With your main base setup.. I gather you are using the A1408??
    Simply factory reset the TC..
Then when you do the setup.. extend wireless is the option that will automatically be offered to you.
I am just going to do it.. Other way around.. but it is the same thing.
    So here we go..
I have factory reset the airport extreme.. and it takes a couple of min for it to come up.
You can also see it in wifi.
You can click on it in either place and get into the auto setup function.
I have no network connection at all on the extreme.. it is simply powered on and close to the computer.
It will automatically offer a name.. for reasons I won't go into here but see C9 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Give the Extending router a name that is short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. you can do it immediately here.
    Go next..
    Magically it is done..
    Now fix up the errors..
Default password.. in my home this is not an issue.. and I don't want to change it ..
    So I ignore it.
Second error is firmware is old.
But I much prefer 7.6.1 So I have no intention of giving that up..

  • Hi All. I reluctantly upgraded to IOS 7 last night and now cannot access my home WIFI, all other non Apple devices are fine. I have reset, it will not allow me to 'forget this network', doesnt show the option. I have turned on and off

Hi All, I reluctantly upgraded to IOS 7.1.1 on my IPAD last night , reluctant as every upgrade which promises fixes which dont impact me causes problems that do , which I fix via this community. Today I can no longer access my WIFI at home, my non Apple devices all work fine.I have tried all the online suggestions I can find for this, reset facgtory settings, it will not allow me to 'forget this network', I try to reconnect and it asks for my password which I know is correct and it says it cannot access my network. It can access an unsecured one I believe, but that is not ideal. Any fresh suggestions would be really welcome, please. Many thanks

Thanks so much for your reply, yes I did and that has not worked either . A friend has suggested re installing upgrade, so may try that .

  • I have a new laptop and I am trying to download CS3. The site on adobe gives an error message and the one I tried from this forum downloaded CS3 extended, so my serial number does not work. Does anyone have any suggestions. Regards Vicki

    Hi,
I have a new laptop and I am trying to download CS3. The site on adobe gives an error message and the one I tried from this forum downloaded CS3 extended, so my serial number does not work. Does anyone have any suggestions. Regards Vicki

The trial is always extended. The serial number you enter determines whether it runs as standard or extended.
I'm getting through fine with that link, so it must be a browser issue or some such thing. Try another browser.

  • I have a 2T apple time capsule and router. I bought a Hauppauge WinTV extender which allows regular TV to be broadcasted on a PC. The program allows streaming to a Mac or iPad, iPhone, etc. I need to open a port on the router to allow this to work.

I have a 2T apple time capsule and router. I bought a Hauppauge Win TV extender which allows TV to be broadcasted on a PC. The program allows for the TV to be streamed on a Mac, Iphone, Ipad. I need to access the router set up options to open a port on the router to allow this program to stream the TV to the Mac and Iphone. I do not know how to access the apple time capsule router to change the settings to open a port on the router. help please.

Firstly you do not need to open ports to stream locally.. there is no port block in local LAN.. only WAN to LAN. So there is a good chance it is not needed at all..
Opening ports on the TC I strongly recommend a v5 airport utility.. you can download one for windows if you don't have a Mac.. iOS version of the utility I am not sure but it will not work to do complex things.
In the v5 utility go to the NAT area, and click on port mappings.
Sorry I don't have a screen shot at the moment of the actual mapping page.. but simply put the IP of the device you want opened and the port.
There are plenty of posts with this info if you google.
But as noted.. this is purely WAN to LAN.. nothing else.

  • HT203192 "networksetup is trying to modify the system network configurations" type your password to allow this.

"networksetup is trying to modify the system network configurations" type your password to allow this.Type your password to allow this.  No amount of password typing seems to satisfy the request. The pop up box will not go away!!!!

    Hi Glenyse,
Did you find the answer to your question?  I have the same problem.  Or can anyone else help?
My wife’s 2012 Macbook Pro has Yosemite and is using Wi Fi for the internet connection.
Every time, both on startup and awaking from sleep, a window appears on the desktop with a locked icon saying, “Networksetup is trying to modify this system.  Type your password in to allow this”.
The window (which can’t be moved or dragged) shows the computer’s user name. The password has to be repeatedly typed in as many as 10 times and the highlighted ‘modify configuration’ box clicked before the window disappears and the computer then functions normally.
Needless to say, this is driving my wife up the wall…    I would certainly appreciate information on how to get rid of this troublesome window!

  • Why i always get "Network is trying to  modify the system network configuration type your password to allow this

why do i always get "Network is trying to  modify the system network configuration type your password to allow this"

Hello, let's see if this old cure still works...
To stop the pop-up, Go to System Preferences: Security. Check the box next to "Require password to unlock each secure system preference." Then lock Security.

  • Query on the 'Allow management operating system to share this network adapter' setting?

I have a Hyper-V R2 Test box with 2 NICs. The setting 'Allow management operating system to share this network adapter' was enabled by default on the virtual network that was created as part of adding the Hyper-V role. I configured the virtual network to use the 2nd physical NIC on the box that will be dedicated for VM traffic.
I know that best practise recommends isolating the traffic for host management, and virtual machines between different NICs if possible.
Interestingly, when i unchecked the 'Allow management operating system to share this network adapter' checkbox, one my of my NICs (the one configured for VM traffic) immediately disappears from view in the list of network adapters. At the same time, wiping the static TCP/IP config I have applied to the NIC. Only the virtual switch and management connections remain visible. If i re-enable the above setting, the missing network adapter re-appears but with its previous statically set config wiped.
    Q1 Is this expected behaviour?
Q2 In Hyper-V version 1.0, this setting doesn't exist. As such, does that mean the operating system would share the network adapter by default and cannot be disabled from doing so? I assume this is the case, as all of the network adapters are present/visible on the same server, and in the absence of this setting.
    TIA for any advice
    Mark

It is not that things are hidden - in fact part of the confusion is that too much is shown - it is that they are moved.
Lets go back to the beginning (I am going to describe R2):
If you have a host with two nics and zero External networks - in Network Connections you will see two interfaces.
Go into the Virtual Network Manager and create an External Virtual Network and bind it to NIC 2 - do not select the option for the management OS to share the network.
If you look at Network connections you still see two interfaces, but NIC 2 is now bound to the virtual network protocol - it is dedicated to being a port of the External Network.
This is what happens when you attach a physical NIC to an External Network - it becomes an extension of the External Network - the hypervisor owns it - the management OS does not.
Now - modify the External Virtual Network and turn on the option to share with the management OS.
If you look at Network Connections you will see a new (third) interface.
kThis new interface is a soft interface tht is only exposed to the management OS by the hypervisor - it is a virtual NIC that is attached to the External Network - thus allowing the management OS to share the physical NIC 2 with all the other 'domains'.
In the hypervisor language a 'domain' is a generic way to describe a system managed by the hypervisor - the parent (managemetn os) is domain 0 (dom0) and any VMs are domain 1 through n.  Therefore the management OS doe snot own the hardware, the hypervisor does - the management OS just handles managing the VMs and making sure they all play well with each other as well as creation and description, and managing networking and storage.   But it is really a special VM.

  • TS1398 Forget this network does not appear. It only allows me to join a network.

The forget this network does not appear... Only gives me option to join network.  I need to forget network. I hit the i button and it doesn't appear.

Odd...the only other thing I can suggest is to reboot the Wi-Fi network at work (if you can) and try again.
EDIT: Do you use something called Quickconnect client to setup a wireless connection? If so, this may help:
    (via Google)
To remove the wireless profile from an iOS device:
Go to Settings > General > Profiles
Select the profile you wish to remove (eduroam or UI-Wireless-Setup, for example)
    Select Remove
If asked, enter your device’s security PIN number
Other than that, I'm out of ideas.

  • HT4259 How do I set up an Airport Extreme Base Station (v. 7.6.1) to allow wireless network extension?

I have an Airport Extreme Base station (purchased in 2009) and an Airport Express base station (purchased in 2011 - the model that plugs directly into the electrical outlet) (both version 7.6.1 according to the Airport Utility info).  I want to use the Airport Express to extend my wireless network.  Using Airport utility setup I have a software option on the Airport Express to set it up to extend the network but I do not have an option on the Airport Extreme wireless setup screen that I can check to allow my wireless network to be extended.
All of the documentation I can find on Apple Support states that I should have an option I can check to allow the wireless network to be extended while in the wireles setup section for the Airport Extreme in Airport Utility; but, that check option isn't there.  Is this a case of my Airport Extreme base station being too old to offer that option?  Incidentally, when I try to select the extend wireless network option on the Airport Express from the Airport Utility wireless setup menu I get an error message (no details - just an error message).  The same Airport Express sets up fine if I select join a network (not what I want to do).  Am I just dealing with outdated equipment or does anyone have a suggestion?  Thanks.

Close AirPort Utility if it is open.
Temporarily, move the Express to the same general area as your AirPort Extreme and power it up and wait a minute.
Hold in the reset button on the Express for 9-10 seconds and then release. Give the Express a full minute to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
Click the AirPort icon at the top of the Mac's screen and wait a few seconds for a listing of New AirPort Base Station to appear
Click on AirPort Express just below that and AirPort Utility will automatically open
Wait a minute while AirPort Utility analyzes the network and announces that the Express will be configured to "Extend" the AirPort Extreme network.
Enter a device name for the AirPort Express and click Next
Wait another minute to allow the configuration to occur.
When you see the Setup Complete message, click Done.
Now move the Express to a location that is approximately half the distance from the AirPort Extreme and the general area that needs more wireless coverage
Power up the Express and you are all set.  Trash those old instructions.
