Question # 3 about the HDMI-DVI cable

OK...My older DVD player is working just fine with the component video cable.
Now let's suppose that DVD player eventually stops working and I replace it with a new one.
On the newer DVD players, does the HDMI-DVI cable take the place of the component video cable or do both cables need to be used?  Can the newer DVD players function with just the HDMI-DVI cable alone?

I actually just answered my own question right before I saw your reply.  But thank you for confirming what I thought.  That makes a lot of sense.  I already have my existing DVD player set up with the component video cable and you are correct about needing an audio cable.  I learned that through a process of elimination when I was setting that up and I have plenty of extra audio cables in my closet, so we're definitely on the same wavelength.  My existing DVD player doesn't have the HDMI capability but the component video cable is fine.  Now I just have a better understanding of how this works.   I believe that my existing DVD player is analog but it's very good and I will glady keep it until it goes.
I was also just fooling with my TV settings.  On my "source" list, I had had TV selected as source but I switched it to HDMI, which is what I already connected to my HDTV --- what a difference in sound and picture quality.

  • Just to share experience: HDMI - DVI cable

I got my DVD and XBOX occupying the only two component slots of my plasma TV already. There is a DVI slot (but no HDMI) so I thought I would try the HDMI -> DVI cable from ExtremeMac Apple has in its store. Turns out the screen quality is visibly much worse than output from component.
Just thought I would share my experience if you are considering this cable.

I've had better experience with this cable......
I used the same cable to connect a MBP to a Panasonic plasma when I went to the store to demo the HTDV set (I had to upgrade as I'd mistaken my CRT's composite connection for component Doh!). I was very impressed with the output and could hardly tell any difference between what I saw in the store and what I now see on the very same set (TH-42PX70) via HDMI. I can't tell the difference between HDMI and Composite going to the set from ATV either. I've not had an opportunity to test the same cable in revers going HDMI to DVI (I used it going DVI to HDMI) with an ACD (TV has no DVI port).
So in my experience the cable is good, as are both the HDMI and component ports on the ATV.
Do you have anything else which uses HDMI that you could test the cable with, or test it with a ACD? It sounds to me like an issue with the DVI port on your TV set maybe. I suppose you could have a defective cable, out I've found it to be a good 'un.
PS you should have seen the faces of other people in the store seeing the MBP and Front Row hooked up to the Plasma. I heard a few mutters, "why can't my laptop do that".... If only they knew

Hello, I am interested in buying this week of a mac mini 2011 withintel graphics HD3000 but I'm not sure it looks good with my Samsung SyncMaster 933HD monitor. How would it look better.... with the hdmi-dvi connection built in, buying a HDMI 1.3 cable and HDMI-making or buying an adapter hdmi display port - vga and connected through the port thunderbolt
    Thanks

I originally set up my mini with the included HDMI -> DVI adaptor to connect to a Sycmaster monitor. The graphics were very good.

    http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3515/p/19351107/19767627.a spx#19767627
It has DVI ports.  This means you are best to use an adapter that supports DVI.  Note there is no audio that carries over DVI.  What you need is a mini-Displayport to DVI adapter, and the proper DVI cable. Since Dell doesn't have the specs, you'll need to tell us if you have pins or holes, and how many are grouped.

  • Apple TV loses picture output and status light flashes rapidly after 5 minutes hooked up via HDMI - DVI cable

Apple TV connected to a 2005 50" plasma monitor with DVI input via belekin HDMI to DVI cable.  Unit worked perfectly long enough to get it connected to the wireless network and begin the itunes registration process when there was a loss of signal message on the screen from the monitor and the Apple TV status light flashed rapidly and continuously. Reset and reboot yeilded flashing rapid status light and no output detected from the monitor.  I contacted support online and was told to return the unit to the apple store.  I returned home with another brand new apple tv and connected it in the same manner with exactly the same results.  Is there something with the HDMI - DVI interface that is causing this?  Are there known issues with the HDMI - DVI connection to Apple TV with older plasma monitors?

The Apple TV doesn't actually support DVI. Some have managed to get it to work others have had varying issues with it.

  • My question is about the 'Restore Backup' option on iTunes (Not 'Restore iPhone'). So, if I click on Back Up Now, then 'Restore Backup', would that go through the process of erasing everything on my phone as new then restore whatever iTunes has backed up?

My question is about the 'Restore Backup' option on iTunes (Not 'Restore iPhone'). So, if I click on Back Up Now, then 'Restore Backup', would that go through the process of erasing everything on my phone as new then restore whatever iTunes has backed up?
I do not want this to happen, as with previous experience iTunes doesn't restore a mirror of what the iPhone was when it was backed up as is the case with iCloud backups.
What I am trying to do is, as I've found a method on Youtube, there is an application where I can delete all the multimedia saved in my 'iMessages' so clear up some space. As doing that manually through the phone would take a lifetime. The method is to backup on iTunes, then using the backup created, importing that into the application then deleting the messages through that then restoring the phone using that amended backup.
So back to my question, would restoring through 'Restore Backup' just restore the backup internally or would it flush the entire phone and then restore the backup? And if it does so, what would be lost in the restore?
    Thank you all,
    Fahmid

iCloud should overwrite your phone with the data stored in your account, preserving your newer data.  However, to be sure I would go to Settings>iCloud and turn data syncing to Off before restoring the backup.  Then, after restoring the backup, turn the data syncing back to on, and when prompted about Merging with iCloud, choose Don't Merge.  This will ensure that the data in your iCloud account overwrites the data on your phone (which is your goal).
Also, you don't sync text messages with iCloud so you will end up losing your more recent messages when they are overwritten by the backup.

  • No sound from optical output when using hdmi/dvi cable

I am trying to connect my apple tv2 to my B&O Beovision 7. I have used an HDMI to DVI cable which is working fine for the picture; but obviously DVI does not carry sound. I have therefore connected an optical cable to the digital optical output on the apple TV and put this through a converter to digital coax, which then goes in to the TV. I know the optical cable / converter set up works fine as I have tested it on my sky box and it works fine. But I get no sound from the apple TV - any ideas?

I hav exactly the same problem... Did you resolve this??

  • About the DVD ribbon cable...

This may sound like a crazy question, but does anyone see a problem with cutting the ribbon cable in half, and using regular (but very thin) wires to connect the two halves, creating a longer cable?
No, it's not going back into the iBook, that's over with. The iBook's insides are going into a Mac SE case (it's for a mod).
The most stable location for the logic board is the SE's original logic board frame at the base, but the DVD ribbon isn't long enough to get it sitting comfortably atop a USB floppy at the floppy/vent grille location. So I need to either extend the ribbon, or get a longer one, if such a thing is to be found, and from what I've seen even the tiny little ribbon is a bit pricey. Well, $35 - hardly break-the-bank pricey, but still... besides, I don't see anything with the length I need.
So, anyone see a problem? Weakened signal, noise, that kind of thing? Seems improbable, but before I pick a plan I'd like to know where my options stand.
    Thanks.
Oh, also - anyone happen to know where the backlight fuse is on the logic board of a 12" G4 iBook?

    Hello Graham,
Could This be the right cable?

  • I'm loathed to ask the same question again about the ITunes library not syncing with my iPod but having just done a complete restore, ensuring the tracks are in AAC format.. There are still problems.. Apple are there with the tutorials..but no solvings!!!

I'm using iPod 4th Gen iOS 6.1.3 and an iMac with 11.3 .. All latest versions. I have 23.4gb music according to the file but when I attached the iPod the bar at the foot of the page says 18.3gb. Some tracks are missing. Most if not all have been ripped from cd's into iTunes which is creating AAC format for each track. Other tracks play fine, some show the song but not the Artist and vice versa.
I have tried dragging the tracks from the Mac library to the IPod music file..nothing. So I go to Safari, type the question in and read the same problems over.. Are Apple aware of their Tutorials without troubleshooting pages ?    Do they care?
My Pioneer DDJ/T1 is set up with Traktor and only wants to work with iTunes..  So iTunes are edging themselves in everywhere for everything... But it's still not working as it should..
Anyone have any clues please... Tried most all the ideas so far...

    1) This is because of software version 1.1. See this
thread for some options as to how to go back to 1.0,
    which will correct the problem...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=3754
    59&tstart=0
    2) This tends to happen after videos. Give the iPod a
minute or two to readjust. It should now be more
    accurate.
    3) This?
iPod shows a folder icon with exclamation
    point
    4) Restore the iPod
    5) Try these...
iPod Only Shows An Apple Logo and Will Not Start
    Up
iPod Only Shows An Apple Logo
I think 3,4, and 5 are related. Try the options I
    posted for each one.
    btabz
I just noticed that one of the restore methods you posted was to put it into Disk Mode First rather than just use the resstore straight off, I Have tried that and seems to have solved the problem, If it has thank you. previously I have only tried just restoring it skipping this extra step. Hope my iPod stays healthy, if it doesnt its a warrenty job me thinks any way thanks again

  • Question/Clarification about the headers at beginning of timeline

I moved from CS2 to CS4 and one thing that leaves me a little puzzled is the assign video source and the track selection headers at left side. I have read the manual and played with this. I see some advantages, such as making the "page up/down" keys jump to clip in/out points only on certain tracks (nice). I also see how I can assign the source track to drop on a certain track. It seems like Adobe split apart what was the function of selecting a track in CS2 to give more flexibility, but I feel as though I am missing the true power/functionality of this.
Are there any tutorials that really show off the advantages of this (for me) new way of doing things?

I can't remember if track targeting is specifically covered, but you may be interested in
    these tutorials for PPro CS4.

  • Honest question, thinking about the 60's...

So, back in the day, people would protest. In the 21st century, the Avenue for protesting is the Internet. That being said, it seems THIS message forum is not a Verizon board but rather a customer run boars sponsored by Verizon...does that mean THIS forum is the best place to voice our concerns? Is there a more appropriate or more successful venue to have our concerns heard....and dare I say, addressed? I've seen several comments on other topics written in a way that we have to get the word out so Verizon will listen and do something...that makes me think we need to voice our concerns somewhere else....anyone know for sure?

The board is run by Verizon.
Only a few Verizon people however read it.  Mostly the admins who try to keep it running well, and will only occasionally offer some assistance.  The assistance will be in suggesting already known solutions, or help in trying to get already open problems to someone who MAY be able to help.
In general voicing concerns here will only be talking to others peers here.  Some of us can help with some problems, but not with things that require Verizon itself to respond too.
The board is mainly meant to ask your peers for suggestions or help about our Verizon service, etc.
For technical concerns you might be able to get assistance from one of the Verizon Twitter feeds.
Some other Boards such as the ones run by DSLREPORTS may help.  They even have one that talks to some Verizon Support people.
Its hoped that Verizon will soon add back a new version of their Board for suggestions, which they said they would do when they closed the old one last year.

  • I have Indesign CS6.  Question is about the rectangle box on the left side.

The rectangle/box with the X through it, on the left in the second column, does not have the X through it anymore and now when I set up something to place in that section there is no X there either.  So I kept doing my thing as usual because it was still working, but when I printed it out the outline shows up where before the X was and there was no outline that showed up.  I do not know what I hit or did to change this.

    Screen shots, please.
There are two, similar-looking, tools in the toolbox. The ones with the X are image frame tools and expect image content by default. These do not have stroke or fill applied when created, no matter what settings might be set as defaults.
The ones without the X are the Shape tools, and by default they expect no content, but you can place anything into them if they are empty. They will have whatever stroke and fill are set by default when created.

  • Question(s) about the Active Cell:Position property node for a table control

    Hello,
What determines the Active Cell Position property node for a table control? I have this in my code and I am displaying its value to a front panel indicator. The value displayed is always set to 0,0. The help for the property node say that it is "read -only" so what sets the value of Active Cell Position  for a Table Control?
    Regards,
    Kaspar
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You set the active cell with a property node.  Once you select an active cell, you can do specific things to that cell and that cell alone, things like set the background color.

  • SQL Format Question (sorry about the previous post)

I'm trying to create a query that will produce the following output:
    DNAME ENAME
    ACCOUNTING CLARK, KING, MILLER
RESEARCH SMITH, ADAMS, FORD, SCOTT, JONES
SALES ALLEN, BLAKE, MARTIN, JAMES, TURNER, WARD
As opposed to this basic query:
    SQL> get test.sql
    1 break on dname
    2 select dname, ename
    3 from dept, emp
    4 where emp.deptno=dept.deptno
    5* order by dname
