Question about Auto Save and Versions
Hi. I'm running the latest version of Yosemite — 10.10.2
My Mac seems to be auto-saving documents, but when I click the down arrow on a document's title, I don't see the options to "Revert to Last Saved Version" or "Browse All Versions."
Since the documents are being auto-saved, I would like to have the option of reverting and browsing saved versions. Does anyone know why I'm not seeing those options?
Thanks!
Glad that helped!
Yes, I believe the way you described indeed worked in previous versions of OS X.
Enjoy your Apple gear.

I'm not seeing the Auto Save and Versions features
I have a document open in Pages '09 and I'm running Lion, but I am not seeing the auto save or versions features that you supposedly get my clicking on the document name. Can someone help? Do I have to turn this feature on in preferences?
I'm actually working on a Word document that Pages has converted and opened, but the document does have a title bar name. So..I have to do a manual save before auto save will start working?!?
You don't have to do a manual save. Pages will auto save the converted Word document. If you quit Pages after editing the converted document without saving, Pages will reopen the converted Word document, give it a temporary window title of "Untitiled" and have saved your edits.
I did think I see a preference setting for auto save that wasn't checked in my preferences.
I don't think Pages every had auto save. Word does though, and this may be what you're remembering.
Also, how does all this auto save and versions stuff work…
Have a read of Apple's support document titled OS X Lion: About Auto Save and Versions. This explains both and how the two features are related but different.
NB While Pages auto saves new, untitled documents it doesn't create a Version of these documents. -
Where can I control Auto Save and Versions? I can't find it in System Settings.
Can I control it by terminal commands?
On http://www.apple.com/macosx/what-is/ Apple claims:
Versions creates a new version of a document each time you open it and every hour while you’re working.
While here http://www.apple.com/macosx/whats-new/auto-save.html Apple claims:
Forget about manual saving and forge ahead with confidence. Auto Save in OS X Lion automatically saves your work, while you work, during pauses and every five minutes. And Lion saves changes in the background so you're never interrupted with progress bars.
So I wonder every five minutes or every hour? Would be nice to make sure on each Mac itself whether it auto-saves every five minutes or every hour and to actually allow its user o set the frequency. It does both. It saves your work in the current version every 5 minutes. Every hour, it creates a new version of the document.
I haven't searched for any version settings, yet. -
Auto Save and Versions not working
Auto Save and Versions are not working in pages or numbers. I've worked on a project for over five minutes when I "Xed" out the drop down box opened up and asked if I wanted to save. Any ideas why? Also, how do you open up versions?
There is the problem with that sentiment. I don't like the loss of "save as" either. I think the new save/duplicate paradigm has more steps and is poorly implemented to boot. Yet, people complain far more about Versions and Autosave than they do about "save as"? Why on earth would anyone complain about Autosave? There is no user interface change involved with Autosave. It is entirely in the background. If you don't like Autosave, you are free to randomly delete files from your machine and from Time Machine if you want. I don't see what the point of that would be, but it would give you the same effect of not having Autosave. There is more a user impact to Versions, but it still a really cool feature. Why would you not want to have access to old versions of your document? It isn't going to eat much disk space. The last time someone complained about disk space usage by versions I calculated that it would take 38 years for them to run out of space due to Versions. If you don't want to use Versions, don't click on the Versions tools. Problem solved.
I don't want people lumping clear losers (like no more "save as") with clear winners like Autosave and Versions. -
Does auto-save and version work with old apps like pages '09?
Hello,
I'm new Lion user. I tried auto-save and version with textedit and it works.
But i'm not sure it works with pages '09.It does work if you install the update from yesterday.

Do Auto Save and Version work for Office for Mac-documents?
Do Auto Save and Version work for "Office for Mac 2011"-documents?
No, just certain Apple apps right now. Preview, iWorks, textedit come to mind. Anything else?

How do I activate auto save and versions?
How do I activate auto save & versions?
Mountain Lion. Since ML, Auto Save and Version does not work with new user accounts I am creating. The accounts I moved from Lion MBA to Mountain Lion on my RMBP 15 have it enabled.
So: ML still has the feature, but you may not access it by Preferences. It does - only on new accounts - even not work with TextEdit. With the Accout I moved from Lion to Mountain Lion no such problems. -
A question about Auto Save, Versions and Preview.
I haven't upgraded to Lion (yet?). I'm trying to understand what impact Lion will have on my workflow.
Do I understand right that it is not possible to turn off Lion's Auto Save?
And that the autosavings are stored in a hidden sqlLite data base?
I use Preview for... err... previewing files (PDFs and image files). Nothing I open (preview) in Preview I save.
Is Lion's Auto Save going to save every file I take a look at in Preview?Thebestplacehere wrote:
I think is more a pro than a con to upgrade ..
The idea of Versions looks good to me, it certainly is not a 'con to upgrade'. The amount of disk space it uses and where (on which disk) is a bit of a concern to me. But by the time the applications I work with implement this feature that probably will be sorted out.
there's more to upgrading though.
Not so much on topic:
I do want to upgrade. Eventually. Although I do worry about the direction Apple are heading in, I don't want to get stuck in the past.
I'm disappointed AirDrop is not for my computers. And the treatment Spaces and Exposé got really withholds me of upgrading any time soon. Maybe a third party developer dives into this matter. Working with an external display connected to notebooks has changed in Lion and is not particularly handy for everyone. (While using the external display only, opening the lid of the notebook in Lion turns on the display of the notebook. This was not the case before Lion.) -
Hi,
I'm on Mountain Lion for all my "non-critical" work, but I'm still running the latest Snow Leopard on my main desktop machine, running CS6 Design & Web Premium. I've avoided the switch primarily because of the auto-save feature that Apple placed into ML. I haven't found a satisfactory answer anywhere on the web to this basic question...is auto-save a problem, as Apple implements it, with CS6 and working on images?
In particular: 1. I work on very larger files, 4GB+ in size regularly, and I don't wan't the peformance hits associated with constant saving, 2. I make changes to images, downsizing them, croping, color corrections, etc. so that I can make jpg proofs for clients or myself. These are more "intermediary" images and not intended to be saved. I don't want to downsample an image, flatten it to creat a jpg for proof and have it overwrite the original image layered, high res by mistake. Does this happen with photoshop, or does Adobe avoid the auto-save that Apple uses?
I have all the latest iOS gadgets and it's becoming quite cumbersome managing multiple sets of iCloud info, etc. without being on ML. I'd like to make the switch, but at the cost of losing work, etc. Can someone with experience on ML & CS6 give me any input in the matter? And, does this also apply to all the other Adobe apps in CS6? I'm constantly making minor changes and edits that I usually "undo" out of and don't want saved.
Thanks.
CraigSo, in other words, photoshops behavior works the same, using save as..., etc. as it did under Snow Leopard? I should expect the auto-save behavior that occurs in apps like iPhone, etc., where i can actually lose the original because of the constant backups, etc.?
Thanks. -

When will Microsoft make an update for "Auto Save" and "Versions"?
Do you actually know something more about this missing function in office 2011?
There are a lot of people, myself included, that are hoping the answer to that question is "never". Hopefully, if they do, it will be something one can disable or tailor in preferences.
However, Office already has some of the basic elements of Versions and AutoSave right now. You can set documents to automatically save at any minute interval you want. And if you enable "Track Changes" within an Office document, you can essentially keep versions as you make changes. While "Track Changes" and Office's method of AutoSave is not identical to Apple's lion implementation, I like it better...mainly because you can enable the facets of the features at many levels, while with Lion's, you can't. Yeah, I know that there are workarounds, but they are time consuming to undo changes that you don't want, or accidentally make.
Imagine Lion's Autosave you can't turn off, on something like Photoshop. You open a file, apply a filter or two, and then decide you don't like the changes. Oops, Photoshop has saved the file.... then you have to go through the rigamarole of Versions to restore your original document. -
Question about Contact Sheets and Version name.
When making a contact sheet, is it possible to just have the image number under each photo and NOT the words "Version Name" in front of each number?
Thanks for any help.Hi John Cardamone;
When I saw your question I had thought I had seen it before and was wondering if there was an answer on the other posting. So I did a search which brought up your seven posting of the same question that is all.

Hello all. I am new to the Apple iMac. Love it! Just downloaded Lion and am curious about Versions and Autosave but cannot seem to find any info in the Help menu. Will Versions work on Office for Mac software (ie, Office for Mac Excel and Word)?
Open Pages, Preview or TextEdit as the previous poster said, then:
i. hover your cursor round the title bar to make the arrow/upside down triangle visible
ii. click that arrow to see the menu.
Of course, you'll need to have some versions of a file in order for Versions to do anything! -
Would a 347 MB file be slow? Auto save and auto type turn off?
I am doing an art inventory and add jpegs of the art. I don't resize them they range from 750k to 3MB. I guess if it is slowing the program down i should? It currently is 267 rows by about 18 columns.
Thanks in advance.
Oh can I turn off auto save and auto type? That may help. How do I do that?Done.
Enter Scrip Editor
paste the posted script
File > Save > as Script on the Desktop
Move the script to the folder :
Macintosh HD:Library:Scripts:Folder Action Scripts:
CAUTION, you will be asked to enter your pasword.
Create a folder to do the job. I named mine Normalized. I created mine on the Desktop where it's easy to reach.
Go to :
Macintosh HD:Library:Scripts:Folder Actions:
Double click the alias : Configure Folder Actions
Below the left column, click
navigate to select your new folder
Below the right column, click
select the script image - normalize400.scpt
After that, drag and drop a picture file onto your folder.
The original will be move in the folder Originals (isn’t it original ?)
and a reduced copy 400 x height will be stored in the folder Normalized images.
And now, here is the script :
--{code}
Image - Normalize
This Folder Action handler is triggered whenever items are added to the attached folder.
The script rotates the image counter-clockwise (left).

I am using Windows 7 with Adobe Reader XI. I'm building a website that has help documents that I would like to Auto save and open with Adobe Reader XI. I am unsure if this is a user feature or a publisher feature. I want to have these documents auto open and run in Internet Explorer 11 specifically.
