Question about battery life on brand new mbp

I have had my mbp 11 days now, and the battery life seems very short.
I have tiger woods 08 installed
20 minutes of playing and the battery life is down from 100% to 20%.
This seems very short, its not only playing games, the battery life seems to go down very fast when browsing the internet etc.
Cycle count is 8.
Can anyone tell me, is this what i should expect?

In particular read the article on calibrating the battery. If you haven't done this, then I suggest you try it first. If problems persist then followup with a call to AppleCare or your local Apple retailer.

  • Battery life on brand new 13" retina MBP disappointing

Waited a long time to buy the Haswell retina 13" MBP with improved battery life ('9 hrs wireless web'). So far I'm only managing 5 hrs max. And all I do is browse the web and some text editing. Anyone else disappointed? Not sure if I should go have it looked at or if I just fell for another marketing spin. I imagine being told even 2 hours is still 'up to 9 hours'. Grr.

I've actually noticed this problem.  Sometimes I'll have 10-12 hours and then suddenly it'll drop to five.  I'll turn off wi-fi, bluetooth, set the brightness to two or three and close all programs, and barely see any change.
Last night I did some investigating and found that the kernal_task was eating up CPU cycles, running at 100-110% non-stop.  I restarted the machine and the kernal_task went back to normal and stayed there for a while, and my battery life showed HUGE improvements.  I think it might actually be related to the keyboard/trackpad issue others have seen because I've noticed (anecdotally) that the decrease in battery life usually follows the unresponsive spell.
I'm planning to test and document this weekend so that I can report it to Apple.  I'd suggest that you look at the Activity Monitor for the kernal_task when you're getting poor battery life and see what percentage it's running at. I suspect you'll see it's high.  When it's running normally, I get crazy good battery life.  If you find it is, take screen shots and report it to Apple.  Runaway kernal_task is not a new probelm with a new OS.  It's been reported in most of the other major releases.

  • Question about battery life

    Hi everyone,
I got my refurbished MBP 13" mid 2010 model two Friday's ago (July 16) from the Apple online store and I have some questions about the battery life....
Immediately after I got it, I followed all the battery calibration instructions from apple.com/batteries (and did it again after it because I was unsure if I did it properly). While it was charging, I was installing some recommended applications, one being coconutBattery. In the additional information section, it said that my MBP was 7 weeks old, has gone threw 10 battery load cycles, and had a original battery capacity of 97%. I am now at 17 loadcycles, with 94% original battery capacity.
Now to how much time I get with the battery... I have done some testing of my own, such as watching some movies (Tron and Star Trek First Contact, I'm a geek :D), basic web browsing (5 tabs open, reading blogs, watching a couple of 3 minute youtube videos) and listening to an audio book (iWoz) with a tab or two open. The best battery life I have gotten (basic web browsing) was 5 1/2 hours, with 60% LCD brightness, keyboard backlight off, and bluetooth off, with just Chrome and coconutBattery open.
Is this the average battery life for everyone else? I bought this because of its supposedly good battery life, and though I am very happy with my purchase, I just want to make sure that I have a fully working MBP.
    Some other notes:
The battery meter next to the clock sometimes says that 98% is fully charged (I think it is just a glitch)
The estimated battery life is between 9-11 hours when brightness is at 30%-40%, airport and bluetooth is off, and keyboard backlight is off when I am doing text editing.
    Thanks in advance.
EDIT: Forgot to say I have the 2.4ghz 250gb model.

    Current Battery Capacity:5490 mAh
    Original Battery Capacity:5770 mAh

  • Horrible battery life with brand new iPod touch 2G

There is definitely something going on with the battery life on my 2G. I just got a 32GB iPod touch 2G on Wednesday to replace my 32GB iPod touch 1G and the battery life is atrocious.
I charged it up fully and Fetch/Location Services is disabled. Backlight was set to auto and WiFi was on. I browsed the net for about an hour (no music playing), watched a 6-minute YouTube video, and played five minutes of X-Plane.
The 20% battery message came up after about an hour and a half of total on time from a fully charged battery. My 1G would have been above 70% at that point.
Then last night with a fully charged battery, I read a few posts on Apple Insider, played some Solitaire, then put the device to sleep, and awoke this morning to find the battery at 20% with a warning message. I always have WiFi on.
Now I am using my 2G no different than my old 1G -- I have the exact same usage patterns including WiFi usage, yet battery life is much, MUCH worse. What's going on?

Fully charge the iPod a few times, then use it until it goes out of battery. Do this 7-8 times, then check the battery life again - new batteries do this often in the beginning.

  • Battery Life on brand new macbook pro 15 inch i5 only lasting 3 hours

The battery on my macbook pro is only lasting 3 hours with light use...If i'm watching a video or on a game it lasts maybe an hour or 2. I charged it fully when I first got it out of the box 2 days ago.
I have tried calibrating it which worked a little bit. But still nothing like the promised 8 hours. Not even near 6 hours.
    Can anybody help?

I tell you how to maximise it mate .. Fully charge your battery and leave it on charge for 2 hours .and then create the minimum power consumption scenario ( kill bluetooth , minimise brightness , kill all apps etc ) AND THEN remove the plug .. use at this state until about 70% charge and continuously monitor the capacity like I mentioned earlier when you see it hit a high, plug it in you will see now that will become your permanent capacity .. allow full charge and leave it plugged for a day . .repeat the same .. after about a week now this time do the same but reduce down to the 40% range and always plug in at a high capacity point..you will train you r battery this way ..
I am glad I could help .. altho it took a bit of fighting the external obstructions it's all good
    take care ,,

  • HT1338 How can I conserve battery life on my new macbook pro? I got it 2 weeks ago and am noticing that the battery depletes quickly. I dim the screen and keyboard backlight & mainly use Safari (multiple tabs).

    Appreciate any help!

My daughter also just bought a Mac Book Pro 13" with the same issue. When we migrated over from the old computer, we brought over only her documents, no applications, and she was getting only about a 2 hour battery life on the new MBP.  Somewhere in the MBP threads in this forum someone who was experiencing this same battery life problem said he was told by an Apple Genius in a retail store to try setting up a second user, and then to try working out of that user only. So we set up the second user, logged out of the old user,  and the battery life readout is now about six hours after a charge when my daughter is logged in as the new user. If she needs old documents or other files she can always log in as the old user to use them, but she rarely has to go back. Whenever  she is logged on as the old user the battery life shows under two hours, but when she she logs out and logs back in as the new user it jumps back up to around six hours.
There seems to be no need to eliminate the files etc. that reside under the old user. As long as my daughter is logged out as the old user and logged in as the new user, the battery life is much better. Weird solution, but it seems to be working. She is running Lion 10.7.4.
         Hope this helps.

  • TS2634 The battery life on my new iPad is only about five hours when apple claim ten hours is this normal

The battery life on my new iPad is only about five hours when apple claim ten is this normal

Apple's note on 10 hours: Battery life varies by use and configuration; see www.apple.com/batteries for more information.
Check out here for battery saving tips: http://www.apple.com/batteries/ipad.html
Keeping screen brightness at 50% or less is one of the easiest ways to conserve battery. Turn off Bluetooth and LTE if not in use is also useful.

  • Battery Life on a new vs old battery

Hi I've just bought the HP Pavilion g4 (1100au) and ran the battery check utility.
I noticed that the battery is already 6 months old. How does this affect the life and capacity of the battery? And will the warranty cover the fact that the battery is already 'old' at purchase? (E.g. if it's below expected performance for a 1 year-old battery one year after purchase, will the warranty replace the battery?)
Although there is no mention on the HP site, some online stores selling HP Pavilion are claiming a battery usage time of just over 4 hours (not using dvd drive or playing graphic-intensive games). Is this correct? What should I expect in a year's time, in 2 years' time and in 3 years' time?
    many thanks

Any site about battery life and usage will tell you that it depends on the number of charge cycles and the level of charge that you keep the battery at.
If you keep a battery at 100% it will decrease the life significantly.  That's why a new battery will ship with a charge of say 50% or 40%.
Getting 1000 cycles or even 500 cycles out of a Li-ion battery is overly optimistic, at best.  Older batteries would degrade over time until the MAh would go to 0. They would also heat up during charge cycles and have minor shorts in them which would be disregarded by the battery board.  A short in a battery is a major problem.
Nowadays, batteries have smart chips in them, a temp monitoring diode, lots of safeties.  If the smart chip detects the smallest defect in a battery, it will just shut it down.  That's why you see seemingly good batteries just all of a sudden stop working.  Once the Mah rating gets down to about 50%, a battery could just shut down at any time.
Aftermarket batteries don't have these safeties built-in to them.  Most of them don't even have a temp diode. They just show a static temp all the time.  So, they could short out and start a fire, they could overheat and take out your laptop charging system or worse.  I've seen worse, it's not pretty.
I don't do anything to increase the life of my batteries, I just keep them at 100% charge and use them.  I'm lucky if I get two years use out of a battery.  Usually I get one to one and a half years out of them. After about 100 charge cycles, they start to degrade the mAh rating.  If they make it to 50% without shutting down, I just replace them.
Batteries aren't even considered a component anymore, they're considered a disposable commodity.

  • Hey i bought a brand new MBP like 6 months ago and now it won't charge

i bought a brand new MBP like 6 months ago and now it won't charge. I tried using a friends MBP charger of the same year as my computer but it still says not charging at the top right corner of the computer screen where the charging symbol is. This problem just happened out of nowhere because it was working the day before then the next day it just stopped working saying it is not charging. I tired doing all of the suggested techniques to fix it but not luck.
This is the battery report is when my MBP is either connected to my charger or my friends charger which works perfectly on her computer.

  • My battery life on my new Iphone 4s is the pits!  I had a blackberry and so much better..I am not using my phone that much but don't even seem to get much out of it. Anybody help with suggestions???

I am trying to figure out how to improve my battery life on my new Iphone 4S.  It is so poor !  I had a blackberry for few years and just bought my new Iphone. So disappointed in this battery life!
Would appreciate any help I can get on improving battery life.  I am not using my phone for games.  Only use it for texts and emails and very little surfing.  Do have few apps. Don't use Siri much as I am in Canada and she isn't much help here like it is in the States; which is also disappointing.
I took my phone off charger at 9am this morning and didn't use it much till about 1pm and it already was only 53%.  Used it a little for chatting with someone; a few emails and had to plug my phone in around 330pm.....
Help me????? I have read some people and they are seem to be complaining about this issue big time.  Sure hope Apple does something about this!
    Mrsgolfie

I understand all of this Meg; that is why I bought an Iphone; but never expected my phone not even give a at least a 24 or even 12 hours....I work 12 hour shifts and also would expect to have to charge each night but not twice a day or more.  I am not always somewhere I can charge my phone.
Your points are true; however it doesn't help me......

  • FaceTime problems on 3 brand new MBP 13 Retina, Apple has given in

    Hi All,
After recieving 3 brand new machines (MBP13 Retina) in Dec 2013 and Jan 2014, Apple does not believe they can deliver a proper working brand new machine. They also won't look into the problem and hope i can accept this faulty machine.
Is that what Apple is turned into? A company that doesn't believe they can fix their own machines? Or do they not care anymore about their customers and their product?
The person I'm facetiming with cannot hear me when we talk at the same time. My (3 brand new, but all 3 faulty) machines will mute me, so the other party cannot hear me. It is back to the walky talky ages again, 'over'.
Since I'm a great believer of Apple, I cannot believe they won't fix this problem and just keep on selling and delivering brand new MBP 13 Retina machines that don't work.
Does nobody at the Apple company care anymore, is there no company pride?

after a week of working on this problem the last straw was spending  3 hours being helped with this problem by 1mb.com after which time they asked me either to take out a years  support at £129 or pay for help from a better qualified technician! As I only received my IPad last week I am going to send it back tomorrow. why doesn't Apple respond when it is obvious from all the discussions that there is a problem? Considering the price of the iPad I feel thoroughly disillusioned and cheated as well as frustrated by spending so many hours to no avail. this was not the only problem I've encountered but it is the one I've wasted most time trying to resolve./

  • Battery life on my new Macbookair 11 in

I am only getting about 5 hours of battery life on my new macbook air 11 in. Any thoughts on this...

    indicated life or ACTUAL life?
The time "remaining" estimate is (just that an estimate) is currently inaccurate in some instances in Mavericks, others report same and much testing on my own of several machines indicate the same.
This however does not affect the ACTUAL battery life.
recommend the free APP called coconut battery and checking via mAh of charge rather than a time "remaining" indicator until this is resolved
    http://www.coconut-flavour.com/coconutbattery/
Or can contact Apple for free service and/or in shop diagnostic as you are entitled to same.
I can happily report around 20% increase in battery life (actual) on 2 different Air, and additionally much faster boot times (from 22 seconds down to 7 seconds)
    Peace
    SMC reset and re verify
    SMC reset
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • Aperture 3 not working on brand new MBP???

Any ideas, hope you can help.
    Thanks!

Hi, Thanks! The solution on the Macrumors forum worked! A plugin manager issue!
I've copied the solution below for anyone else who may run into the issue.
Turns out it's a simple fix.
For those with the same problem:
    1. Navigate to: /Library/Frameworks/PluginManager.framework/Versions/B/PluginManager
    2. Delete the PluginManager
    3. Get a new copy of the PluginManager. (You can copy one from a friends macbook) or use the one hosted here: http://qvenon.com/files/PluginManager.zip
    Thanks again!
