Question about bringing Hi8 movies into FCE

I have many 8mm tapes dating back, 5-15 years. I would like to bring the footage into FCE and then brun them to DVD before I lose too much quality (we have watched them many times over the years).
I read that I would require a TBC device. I am not familiar with this device, or what it does, or how it works.
http://store.apple.com/us/product/TJ555LL/A
Can someone explain to me how I would connect this to my Imac and the process of using it to convert my old tapes?
Thank you
-Mike

If yours is a digital-8 camera, you can capture from the camera. If it's not, then you can't; the footage must be digitized by some device between your camera and your Mac. (If you have a dv camera, you could connect 8mm cam to dv cam, dub to dv, then capture from dv cam directly.) In any event, one hour of dv footage is about 13GB.
My suggestion is to look somewhere OTHER THAN an Apple store for a better price on the converter. Do an online search.

  • Importing .mov into FCE

    Hello, I just installed Final Cut Express to try and edit videos I capture through the Kodak Zi6 handheld video camera, but when I try to drag and drop into FCE I get an error message saying "Unknown file"?
    Any ideas? thanks.

    See this thread:

    The Zi6 is not directly compatible with FCE, you must first convert its files to something FCE understands.

  • Transfer VHS and Hi8 movies into imovie

    I have a bunch of old Hi8 and VHS movies that I want to transfer into imovie so that I have them in digital format for the future. I know you need a device that you plug your analog player into (like your VCR or camcorder) and then that device will go to the mac via usb2 or firewire. Can anyone recommend a few devices that will work seamlessly with imovie. Preferably inexpensive?

  • Question about uploading videos/movies

    hi guys and gals
    i just recently bought a 30GB ipod video for my little cousin and he asked me a question that i do not have an answer to.
    he knows how to upload music from his itunes to his ipod (drag music into the ipod icon) but he can't figure out how to upload movies/videos.
    i know that the format of the video has to be quicktime or something that is compatible with mac. he uses windows and i believe his videos are AVI or some weird nonesense.
    can you please, in easy steps, tell me how to upload videos into the ipod? thanks!

    Upload videos same way you do songs-just drag them over if you haven't enabled autoupdate.
    Videos have to be in a specific format, found under iPod tech specs on apple website.
    Here:
    H.264 video: up to 768 Kbps, 320 x 240, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats
    MPEG-4 video: up to 2.5 mbps, 480 x 480, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov file formats

  • I can't import Quicktime movies into FCE 4?

    Hi, I'm trying to import an eight second Quicktime movie (that I made in the new Motion 5) into Final Cut Express 4. When I try to import it, a message pops up saying "Error: Unknown File." Is there anything I'm doing wrong? Thanks in advance!

    FCE works with two types of QuickTime codecs: DV and AIC.  When you exported the file from Motion 5, which of those two did you use?

  • Converting analog hi8 tapes into FCE using canopus

    I am trying to convert some old home movies (HI8) using a canopus converter (ADVC110).  When I play the move clip back in FCE - the image is very blurred/distorted.  Am I doing something wrong, or is this to be expected given the tape format and converter I'm using?

    Welcome to the forum.
    Here are some things to check. The video should not be "very blurred/distorted".
    Does the video look sharp when you connect your Hi8 camera directly to your TV? (Check this because the problem could be degraded tapes.)
    Are you using good quality cables that are in good condition? Both from your camera to the ADVC and the ADVC to your Mac.
    What are the exact DIP switch settings on your ADVC? In North America, all the DIP switches should be OFF (except #2 which could be on if you want the ADVC to default to Analog-IN when you power up.) Note: only change the DIP switches when the ADVC is disconnected from power. And don't connect or disconnect the firewire cable unless both your ADVC and your Mac are disconnected from power (not just shut down).
    What FCE Easy Setup are you using?
    Have you used the ADVC before with good results? Or is this the first time you are using the ADVC? If so, did you get it new or used?

  • Basic question about importing/exporting movies

    Hi all! I'm a complete novice with Flash (and moviemaking). I used it many years ago, but haven't used it in a long, long time. Flash may not even be the program I need... so let me know if that's the case.
    Basically, I shot a video with my camera. It is a .mov file. I imported it into iMovie and edited it. Then I exported it as a .mov file. I want to embed the video into a web page. As far as I can tell, in Dreamweaver it needs to be a .swf file. But I don't think I can export an swf file from iMovie. So I read online I could convert my file using Flash.
    I followed directions I found online, but though it seems to be working... it's not. Here's what I did:
    I opened a new file in Flash. I used the default type. I clicked on the timeline and went to File > Import > Import movie (using all the default choices).
    I broused to find the .mov file. I clicked Next.
    I chose a skin that was the default (Minimal Flat Custom Color Play Back See CounterV...). Clicked Next. Clicked Finish.
    A little movie player is now on my Flash screen.
    I started adding frames (F5). I see frames are added in the timeline.
    But... when I go to play the movie... it DOES play... but the screen is black.
    I see I CAN export it as a swf file... but since I can't see the movie when I play it, I'm guessing it's not working (the tutorial I was using said I should be able to see it at this point).
    So... am I going about this the completely wrong way? Why is it not working? Thanks for helping me out.
    julie
    PS I'm using Flash Professional CC v. 13.0.0.759 on an iMac

    open your mov file in adobe media encoder.  save to flv or f4v.
    open flash pro, add an flvplayback component to the stage and assign its source (using a relative, not absolute path) to be your flv or f4v.  test.
    when you have that working you can publish a swf and html.  use the html code to embed the swf in your web page.
    p.s. you'll need to upload the flv/f4v, the swf the html file that contains the embedding code AND, if you use an flvplayback skin, that skin.

  • Question about iTunes HD movies

    I was looking into some of iTunes HD movies that are available for purchase when I noticed something... It says that these movies would be compatible with an Apple TV or Mac, or PC. Now I know this doesn't necessarily mean these will be full HD (1080p), but it would make sense if they were.
    I've attempted to play a some 900p and 1080p videos on my Pad and it straight up refuses them. Is it at all possible for me to buy an HD movie off of iTunes, only to have it not work because the resolution is too high for my Pad? Can iTunes know which device I plan on using the movie on before I purchase it? Or will he provide me with multiple vid-files, one for each resolution of iPod, iPad, and computer?
    Also I noticed that the "iTunes Extras" are only available on a Mac or PC with iTunes 9 or later. This means the iPad can play the movie itself, nothing else like commentaries or "the making of", correct?

    No the problem with your AVI is the codec it uses not the video dimensions. The other day I needed to view an h.264 1080p 15MBps with a 4.0 profile on the iPad. GoodReader played the file just fine. If I'm only going to view a video on the iPad that exceeds the iPad specs but it can be played in a third party app, why spend the time to re-encode to the iPad specs. Re-encoding a video not only waste time but the video suffers in lost of quality during the encoding. Besides I'm not using the iPad for video storage. I'm using it to play videos.

  • Question about scrolling and Movie Clips Loaded from the Library

    I hope I am posting this in the right forum.
    Ok, I'm using actionscript 2.0, and I am trying to make a scrolling image gallery. I have a movie clip with three layers. the first contains a movie clip used as a scroll bar. The second is a mask used to hide the overflow content, and the third contains movie clip thumbnails. when I click one of the thumbnails, it loads a symbol containing a larger version of the picture over top of the thumbnails on the same layer. My problem is, the large image is added at the very top of the movie clip, even when it is scrolled out of sight. I want it to appear in sight, so the user doesn't have to scroll all the way back up to the top to see it. This is annoying and confusing. Is there a way to do this?
    Here is the code I used to create the scroll effect (there is actually a whole lot more to the code but it is very long, so I am not adding it now. I will if it is needed though)
    (Oh, and there is no text involved in this. I just got this code off a tutorial and I haven't changed the variable names yet)
        var scrollUpper:Number = 58;
        var scrollLower:Number = 309;
        var textLower:Number = 60;
        var textUpper:Number = -179;
        var scrollRange:Number = scrollLower - scrollUpper;
        var textRange:Number = textLower - textUpper;
        var startY:Number = imagesHolder_mc.thumbs_mc._y;
        function scroll(){
           var moved:Number = imagesHolder_mc.scroller_mc._y - scrollUpper;
           var pctMoved:Number = moved/scrollRange;
           var textMove:Number = pctMoved*textRange;
           imagesHolder_mc.thumbs_mc._y = textLower - textMove;
        imagesHolder_mc.scroller_mc.onPress = function(){
           this.startDrag(false,this._x,scrollUpper,this._x,scrollLower);
           this.onMouseMove = scroll;
        imagesHolder_mc.scroller_mc.onRelease = scroller_mc.onReleaseOutside = function(){
           this.stopDrag();
           this.onMouseMove = null}

    Thanks for your reply. I'll try to explain it better. I have a long, vertically scrolling movie clip. This movie clip contains lots of thumbnails. When I click a thumbnail, the full sized image is loaded from the library and displayed within the same movie clip. when I click the full size movie clip, it disappears again, and I can click another thumbnail to display another full size image. So I'm not just adding more and more stuff to the gallery if that's what you were thinking. I'm just clicking thumbnails to display the full size image so I can look at it, closing it, and moving on.
    But the full sized image is fixed at the very top of the scrolling movie clip, so if I click a thumbnail at the very bottom, I have to scroll all the way back up to the top to see the full size image. I just want the full size image to appear on screen no matter how far down I have scrolled to click a thumbnail.
    I made my basic gallery useing this tutorial:
    http://flashexplained.com/actionscript/making-the-ultimate-dynamic-image-gallery-in-flash- 8/
    if you want to take a look at that, to get an idea of what I'm talking about.
    Now I'm just trying to add some scrolling functionality, which wasn't included, but I don't really understand actionscript well enough to do this easily on my own.
    Sorry for the long reply. I hope this is clearer.

  • Question about getting rented movie from Macbook to Tv

    I rented a movie on my MB yesterday while on the road, today I decided to watch the end of the movie on my tv at home.
    TV:

    My MB itunes is showing on TV but can't find the rented movie??/
    Clicked on TV in itunes, I get only 2 tabs, Summary and Photos. Under Summary I am missing Automatic Sync or Custom Sync and no Rented Movie frame. No option to choose what movie, music, podcast etc.. I want to sync . Looks completely different that what I obtain on my G5????
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

    Yep - only one at a time. You can stream from more than one though. I have a primary Library that I use for syncing (I only sync photos and all the other content shows up automatically under "My Music, My Movies etc").

  • Question about reading csv file into internal table

    Some one (thanks those nice guys!) in this forum have suggested me to use FM KCD_CSV_FILE_TO_INTERN_CONVERT to read csv file into internal table. However, it can be used to read a local file only.
    I would like to ask how can I read a CSV file into internal table from files in application server?
    I can't simply use SPLIT as there may be comma in the content. e.g.
    "abc","aaa,ab",10,"bbc"
    My expected output:
    abc
    aaa,ab
    10

  • Simple question about integrating .AS file into flex3 code

    I'm sure this is extraordinarily easy for most people, but I
    can't figure it out ... nada, zilch ...
    I have this file (

    Perlin Noise File), and I'm trying to include it/make it
    available in my flex3 code. I just can't get the namespace/import
    code right, and I'm not sure - because of the namespace - if I'm
    supposed to put this file in a collection of sub-folders (something
    like: nl/ronvalstar/math ...). The end result is me being able to
    replace the BitmapData.perlinNoise method with an optimized version

    If somebody could provide the code to get this file
    integrated I'd be grateful.

  • Question about Imported AVI movies from Digital Cameras

    Hi
    I use a Canon "Ixus" series digital camera., the video clips on this camera are AVI (Apple OpenDML JPEG, 640 x 480, Millions).,
    My problem is saving edits i do to these video clips in the in the same original format when opening them in QT, unlike photos Qt makes you save AS instead of saving modifications to the original file.
    Again, if Qt does not allow you to save the edits to the clip itself but rather asks you what you want to save it as, and i can not find the same exact QT which is "AVI" (Apple OpenDML JPEG, 640 x 480, Millions)., then what is the correct format to avoid any loss in quality?
    Can anyone advise?

    i just have to rotate these clips, they where shot sideways.
    I understand - however, video is a horizontal format; when you rotate your file 90 degrees either the 640 vertical dimension must shrink to 480 pixels which will leave black borders on each side of the image or you expand the 480 horizontal dimension of your clip to 640 pixels and you crop of the top and bottom of your image.
    Here is how to do it: How can I rotate rectangular pixel DV material 90° while maintaining the correct aspect ratio and interlacing? at http://www.sjoki.uta.fi/~shmhav/SVCDon_a_Macintosh.html#vert-horizrotate
    Good luck.

I know the CDMA version has a tray for international communications but can i buy one at ATT and set it up on verizon?

    You may be able to buy an unlokced iphone from the Apple store.
    The reports I have seen, say that they will begin selling them in November.

  • Questions about restoring catalog

    I will be getting a new computer using Windows 7 in a few days. I have a few questions about how to move my photos
    and programs into the new computer:
    1.  I have Elements 8.0 and Photoshop CS5. Do I install those programs on the new computer first, then transfer my photos to the new computer, then restore the catalog? Or do I bring the photos into the new computer first, then install the programs, then restore the catalog? Or does the order make a difference?
    2. When I restore the catalog, do I click on the folder holding the backup, or just the backup.tly file?
    3. The most difficult question: I currently have a C drive and a J drive on my computer. All my photos are on the J drive; and they're linked to the J drive in the Elements catalog. The new computer will have only one (C) drive. Will Elements recognize those photos, or do I have to do something to change the link from the J drive to the C drive? If the latter, how do I do that?
    This was a nightmare when I first copied my photos from my C drive to my J drive in my current computer, so I'm hoping to avoid a major disaster this time!
    I apologize for asking so many questions at once.

    If you have taken the backup of your catalog from within the Organizer, then you need not worry about your photos. Backup itself creates a copy of these and when you select to restore the backup, these gets automatically restored.
