Question about burning speeds

This has happened from new.
As you see from my Mac Pro specs, it's not daft , but when I tell it to burn a DVD or CD at x4
which is my preferred speed (nice and safe) it ignores me and does it at x8-10 varying
Importing CDs into itunes it gets up to x22ish
Does anyone know how to slow it down ?

Well, first of all, importing songs into iTunes is not the same as burning. Burning is a write operation. Importing is a read operation. (From the standpoint of the optical drive).
You can't really control the read-speed of the drive when importing into iTunes although iTunes does automatically control it if there are errors detected.
As for burning, what program are you using? I'm assuming you are using Toast if you know the actual speed at which the disc is being burned at as Finder/Disk Utility do not report this statistic. When you select 4x in toast, is the number bold? If it isn't then it isn't a recommended burning speed for your drive/media and will automatically step up to the next safest level.
Hope this helps!

  • Issues burning discs on iTunes/ error message about burn speed

I've never had problems burning discs on iTunes until today, I tried to burn one of my playlists on a Memorex CD-R.
    - The burn seemed to be going OK at first, but the drive started making an obnoxious, loud noise by the 4th song out of 16.
    - The progress bar in iTunes then said "burning disc, finalizing" even though the CD had not been finished.
    - The drive practically launches the CD out, causing it to drop, rather than ejecting half way and holding it like usual. An error message came up saying something along the lines of, "iTunes cannot burn this CD because the burn speed is too high for the CD drive or media. Lower the burn speed in the burning pane of preferences"
    - I tried it again without changing the burn speed (which I suppose was set to maximum) thinking it was something to do with the disc. The same thing happened the second time I tried to burn the disc. The reason I didn't change the burn speed when it asked me to was because I'd never been prompted about the burn speed and I've used the whole stack of these Memorex CD's without problems.
I am trying to figure out where the problem really lies - does this sound like an iTunes issue (which needs an update except that my system does as well), CD issue or a drive issue? Is there a more reasonable burn speed I should try next time?
Any help would be so appreciated, thank you!!

Try a different brand. Highly recommended:
    FUJI
    TDK
    Verbatim
Make sure the CDs are not dirty, smudged and/or scratched.

  • Video sound and picture on tv.. question about burning to DVD

    Hi
I finally got the picture to show up on the TV. I went into video, settings and turned on the TV out setting. Now I wonder if I can burn the itunes shows I bought onto a dvd?
Will this be a backup copy incase my computer dies or will I be able to watch this on a dvd player too?
Anyone know if I should put the shows on a dvd and if I can watch them on my dvd player then?
    Thanks

  • Question about burning..... need help

it has said finishing for an awfully long time. so i changed speed to 4x. i have a memorex cd-r brand 700 mb 80 minute blank cd in. i am burning about 35 minutes of my own voice. is there anyway i can see what song number it is on transferring and stuff like that? and how long should the burning process take.

Topdawg, since this is a burning issue & not really a mini issue, I would strongly suggest you re-post in the iTunes for Windows forums under the sub-group, importing & burning. You will probably have a better chance of getting help in that forum.

  • Switching from PC to Mac, have question about processing speed

Hi, I am going to buy a used Mac off of ebay and I am pretty clueless about where to start. I am not very knowledgable when it comes to the difference in processing speeds on pc's and apples both and have just been using what has been passed along. I am on a budget and cannot afford to do a bunch of upgrades when I get a new (to me) apple. I am currently working on a old pc (8 years?) that has had as many upgrades as it can handle. It is a Pentium III 548 mhz, 384 mb of ram and 40g hd on Windows XP. The Apple that I am stuck on getting right now is a G3 with a bunch of upgrades. It is an Imac PowerPC g3 with a 600mhz processor, 512 mb of memory, 120 gb hard drive. It has OS X 10.4 Tiger and ILife and has a single processor. It has a airport extreme card also. My question is 1) Does it take less mhz and ram to run the operating system for an apple and 2) am I going to notice a big difference in speed between what I have now and with the apple? The g3 is $249 and comes with a 90 day guarantee minus shipping. Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance!
    Tracy

I'd save your money or apply it to an Apple G4 (AGP or newer) tower. Depending on how it was configured, you may find that your PIII was a little faster loading web pages than the 600 MHz iMac. My 1 GHz P3s are faster than my iMac DV G3-400 MHz models. I think $249 plus shipping for a 5 or 6 year-old iMac is a bit high. I picked up one of my G3-400 MHz iMac DVs for $20 at a thrift store. If there are any in your area that accept donated computers, you might want to check for a local bargain. While the 600 MHz model that you described is loaded, that's about as far as it goes, other than bumping the memory to 1 GB, but that would likely involve removing a pair of 256 MB DIMMs already in it, and buying a pair of 512 MB DIMMs. If it has a single 512 MB DIMM installed, you wouldn't have to spend as much. Selling the computer with Tiger installed but without the OS installer media will eventually put you in a bind, when you'll need to boot from the installer CD to perform disk repair maintenance. Some may consider Tiger to be a bit demanding of that iMac's system resources, preferring the predecessor "Panther" instead. The bottom line is that the iMac is somewhat limited, in terms of design (no PCI slots) and/or future upgrade potential. If it will suit your needs as a starter Mac, try finding a comparable model for less. You might also check for used computer dealers in your area, as that saves the cost of shipping, and return shipping - if there's a problem. The G4 tower has more potential for hardware tweaking, if you decide to stick with the Mac OS. You can find G4 towers at eBay selling for less than $249, but you'd need to have a monitor. Is space at a premium, in terms of a preference for the iMac's compact form factor? There is a direct correlation between the OS version and the optimal processor speed and amount of installed memory to adequately run it. OS X needs/uses more memory than the older, pre-OS Mac versions, just as Vista or XP2 requires more memory than Windows Me or 98SE. A comparison of Intel's P3s to Apple's G3s or G4s gets into the debate over which one handles more instructions per clock cycle than the other at a given speed. It's difficult to do a head-to-head comparison, because the hardware and software is not the same.

  • Question about burning in Finder?

I use finder to burn mp3 cd's all the time...basically because its way faster and I can fit multiple amounts of mp3's on a cd-r...but my question is this...my itunes library is filed like - artist name/album/songs....then in songs each track is given a track # ie..01, 02, 03 etc...but when I drag songs from my library to a burn folder the songs won't stay in the order that i drag them when they are burned to cd...instead of the order i dragged them Finder always burns them in alphabetical order??? Is there any way to make finder burn mp3's not in alphabetical order??? Thx!!!

    Charles
The finder will always burn things in alphanumeric order. It's just the nature of the beast and nothing to be done about it, I'm afraid.
Have a look at your iTunes Preferences: Advanced -> Burning
What's selected there? You can burn as an Audio CD, Mp3CD or a Data CD. An mp3 cd, for instance, will hold 650 MB of files, that's maybe 150 tracks.

  • Question about high speed DSL

I have had high speed DSL 1.5 MB service since 8/20. Up until last night I was in love with the service. It was running between 600 and 1000KBPS excededing my expectations.
Then last night around 9:45pm it got extremely slow. I am talking 23.3KBPS on the bandwidth test I was able to run from CNET. I followed the instructions in the tech support and power cycled my modem and PC. I checked all connections and they were secure. The DSL light is solid which from what I have read here means I have a connection.

  • Question about burning my DVD

    Hi
I was hoping for a bit of advice before I burned my DVD.
I have an iMovie project that lasts about 1hr 40 mins that I want to burn using iDVD. I realise this is long - much longer than any movies I've done before, so I was just wondering if there are any tips I should follow to make sure the whole process works smoothly.
Is there a particular type of DVD I should use for maximum space and effect? I gather I should set the option to "Best Quality" rather than "Best Performance". Ideally I'd also like to add a photo slideshow of between 30 and 40 photos. Is this a bad idea to try and fit anything more onto the disc?
Thanks in advance for any advice people might be able to offer.
    Ian

    unoriginal,
You should start a new Topic for your problem. Coming into a previous Topic gets confusing...
    1. Not good...
    2. You should have 20GB+ free on your start-up drive.
    3. Is it FireWire? Did you format for Mac? Is the iDVD project on your start-up drive at User/Documents?
    4. Turn off all Energy Saver settings. Don't run virus software. Don't run FileVault.
Due to these problems, should I be aborting the project, fix them and try again,
    Yes.
Capturing video to the external should work fine as long as it's FireWire and Mac formatted.
My 105min iMovie has been burning in iDVD for about 15 hours now.
Too long... See one of my projects below.
    Ireland 2006
iDVD 6 Pass Through widescreen theme
696 images that are 2816x1584 pixels shot with Canon SD700 IS
15 640x480 movies from same digital camera transcoded to H.264 with QuickTime Pro.
Part 1 and Part 2 submenu buttons on main menu. All submenus are the Chapters option for this theme.
Part 1 leads to a submenu. That submenu has additional submenus and sub-submenus. Part 1 leads to 12 total submenus. These menus contain images and movies.
Part 2 leads to a submenu. That submenu has 5 submenus with only images.
I had to "remove" animation on all the sub-submenus and not include any music to get everything on a single-layer DVD-R. The Menu info was WAY over the 7:30; something like 14:00 after these adjustments. About 20 slideshows with music. Additional short slideshows with no music.
Started the rendering/encoding process at exactly 1:00:00 p.m.
Finished the Menu video rendering/encoding process at 3:53:30.
Finished the slides and transitions process at 5:37:30.
Process movies start 5:37:30, finished 6:27:45.
    Burn process start 6:27:45.
    Retrieving ends 6:28:30
    Writing lead-in starts 6:28:30. Finished 6:31:55.
    Writing... finished 6:33:50.
This is the longest project ever for me. Mainly because of the animated menu rendering/encoding.

  • General Question About Compressor Speed & Newer Macs

    Hi,
I am considering buying a PowerMac G5/2.3 dual-processor. I currently have a G4/350 with a 1.2 Ghz Sonnet processor installed. My main intent is to speed up MPEG2 compression for DVDSP 4 at any encoding setting compared with what I have now. I usually leave this computer running overnight to encode without any other apps running. Typical video length is 1-2 hours.
Will I see a significant speed boost with the G5 and a comparable amount of ram or is it a waste of money? DVDSP simulation also looks choppy. Will that smooth out?
BTW, I have no interest in creating a cluster to hand off Compressor tasks, so that path will play no part in my decision. Thanks for any help.
    James

You'll see a difference, for sure.
I work on a Dual 1.42 G4 tower but often visit a friend over at a local post house who works on a Dual 2.5 G5. His machine is significantly faster than mine - I'd say about 40% faster. (and yes, I say this having needed to work on Compressor on his machine)
Considering the greater horsepower difference in your scenario, you should be pretty happy.

  • Noob Question About Burning a DVD

I downloaded a divx and an avi movie to my Macbook. They are both associated with a textbook I am using and are free to download if you have the accesss code provided in the text. My question is I would rather watch them on my tv instead of on my laptop. So how do I do this? I have a Sony progressive scan but I don't know if it will play divx or avi's. I have Toast Platinum and I'm looking for someone to instruct me in a very step by step manner as to how I can make a playable DVD. Thanks!

Toast will work. Just open it and choose make dvd video. You cn choose if you want menus or not. If it is a single video file I suggest no menus. For two or more menus help a lot. Toast will take the avi file and make it into a file your dvd player can use. Then add your file and burn it.

  • Two question about running speed in Labiview RT and FPGA

    hi All
Right now I am working on a project, which need to be developed on Labview RT and FPGA
Here I have two quick question.
    1. Why sampling rates of RTD (9217) module is very slow, it is just aroud 1/sec? even I just tried to run Labview example.
    2. We would like to develop another HMI, which can be used for monitoring the program running in CompactRIO.  In my project, i want to use network publish varible to implement this function. but the running speed become very slow, when I put these variable into my codes. (Shown in attachment)
    Thanks

Nope, those modes can be selected when using 9217. Drop an I/O property node to your FPGA block diagram and select correct module from the list and you should be able to set conversion time.
Answer to your second question is that your shared variables update only when there's data available from FPGA. This means that if you use high resolution mode (800ms/4ch) they update once every ~800ms. Changing your conversion time to high speed should give you a faster update rate.

  • 2 questions about connection speeds

    Hello,
First up: I've been using the same ISP for 3 years now, at the same apartment, and my top download speed has always been 1.5Mbps (roughly 185K/s). For some reason my top download speed "now" is precisely 150K/s, and it's been that way for the past week or so. (And this speed limit affects all my internet-aware apps.)
Is it possible that I've set an OS-wide download limit without realizing it?
Second question: I'm using MenuMeters to determine my connection speed. When using Transmission, a Bit Torrent app, I can also read it's total downloading speed. When MenuMeters tells me that my total download speed is 150K/s, Transmission tells me that it's only downloading at 135K/s.
Trouble is that Transmission is the only app running. And indeed if I pause the downloads, MenuMeters indicates 0K/s (so there are no other internet-using apps running). Since I haven't found any report of speed errors on the Transmission forum, I don't understand this incoherence.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Loa

    Hello,
Tom: very close to what MenuMeters was telling. So I guess Transmissions has some bugs.
But that doesn't solve my other problem: why isn't my top speed 185K/s anymore? Can this be on my side, or is it entirely up to my ISP?
    Thanks

  • Question about transfer speed of my cloud ex2 product. request advice please

Hi guys, I use Raid 1 on my cloud ex2. I have something weird going on. When i received mine My Cloud ex2 with dual wd red of 6tb disks i just unpack all the gear and just do the installation as provided. I used also the data cable that was inluced in the box and i connect it to mine Airport Extreme router from apple.  Also mine computer is windows and is also connected on the Airport extreme and if i do a speedtest of mine connection via this website www.speedtest.net. below you see a picture of it.  The problem i have with mine My cloud device is i wanted to copy mine files from a wd 4tb external disk wich is connected on my pc via USB 3 connection from there i copy them to mine Wd my cloud ex2 drive via network and i try to move arround 50gigs in total and he write them in aprox 10MB/s thats ridicilous slow speed. How i can solve this issue /? is there any way to do it faster because i also wanted my movies on the nas but if i see that 50 gigs takes me aprox 2 hours to get the job done ya mine USB 3 external disk do this operation much quicker.... pfff  I checked also mine network and i have 1Gb speed and the network light at the back of the mycloud ex2 is GREEN blinking because of the copy proces.... Anyone can give me explanation about this matter  Thanks in advanceSteve

I beg to differ.....my EX2 was showing 10-11MBps (thats megabytes) until I learned a thing or two about home network infrastructure... What did I learn? 1. I had an old router that did not support gigabit (problem!)2. I had old network cable that was homemade (possibly a problem)3. I had outlandish expectations of my hardware despite #1 and #2 (biggest problem)4. At no point did I doubt the EX2. I was smart enough to know the capabilities of most hardware just didn't know enough about networking hardware. (first step to solution is admitting there's a problem) What did I do? Well I thought about how important it was for me to be able to move data between my PC and the EX2 as fast as possible so i scoured the Internet for answers. I then decided my newer technology devices (iphones, Ipads,Wifi TVs, etc) coud benefit as well from upgraded hardware. So I purchased a gigabit compatible router (it was hard to part with the cash for a stupid box with blinky lights) and a new cat5e cable. BOOM! 60-70 MBps from my PC to and from the EX2. Now, I would like to see even higher speeds being that my SSD can handle nearly a GB per second and being that a gigabit connection (in theory)) is equivelent to 125MB (and i'm aware of some overhead needs) i was hoping for maybe 90-100MB per second. This is acheiveable perhaps with utilizing a gigabit switch instead of the router and guaranteeing no other writing to the source and destination drives but I've got bigger problems.... The wifi to my Laptop is bottlenecking my  speeds to the NAS at around 11MBps which I think can be fixed with a new wifi card that is capable of AC speeds. No blame to the EX2 on this...either way despite my less than desirable speeds in the beginning, I never had an issue streaming from the EX2 just backing up data was time consuming. If you value your time and want the speeds that the rest of the world is getting... I suggest the following: 1. Make sure you got a Gigabit router2. Make sure your PC has a gigabit NIC card3. Make sure you've got good Cat5e (at minimum) cables. Got all the above satisfied? You should be flying and happier than a blue haired old lady with a bucket of quarters at a Vegas slot machine. To be clear... I am a cheapskate and don't have the most robust machinery but I did learn WHERE to spend my money to get the best bang for the buck. I recently went on a purchase binge but with a well thought out strategic plan... PC = HP500-314 >>16gb Ram >>250gb Samsung 850 SSD >>AMD A8-7600 CPU (total investment $599)Laptop = Lenovo G50-45 >> 16gb RAM >> 500 gb Samsung 850 SSD >> AMD A8-6140 (total investment  $549)Router = Netgear Nighthawk AC1900 (R7000) gigabit router The money I saved on not buying a top of the line Intel I7  PC for roughly $1,200-$1,400 allowed me to build two pretty decent machines (with fast hard drives and more RAM than I can use) and a $200 router (now available for $160) for nearly the same price as one awesome machine that wont reach its potential with what I use them for. All that said I would then have no more moeny for hardware and would be running through my 6 year old crappy router. Moral of the story, don't blame the EX2 until you've had a darn good look at the rest of your hardware and network infrastructure. I believe most of the complaints are stemmed from my same early mistakes. You need to understand gigabit, megabit, and megabyte before you make any claims. Hope this helps someone! Sorry for the long post, I think I just found out how much I like writing on my new laptop!

  • Questions about RAM speed.

I'm a bit confused by this, how it relates to CPU speed, FSB speed, double-pumped this, quad-pumped that. I know my RAM is working harder on account of having to up the voltage on it, but I can't work out how or why. The BIOS is about as illuminating as a cellar, the manual doubly so.
    I have a Q6600, Corsair Dominator 8500, on an MSI P7N Platinum.
I've got the Q6600 up to three and a bit ghz, had to up some of the voltages to get it stable in Prime95. So far so good, but I don't have a clue what the RAM is actually doing. In both manual and linked modes...no difference. I see that I can set the RAM manually, in both modes, to 1066 or more (1066 is it's rated top frequency), but I'm not sure if that's real speed or a multiplier of something. At the moment it shows in the BIOS:
    FSB Clock: 1350
    Mem Clock: 800
    Adjusted DRAM Frequency: 798
I've changed the timings from 5.5.5.18 to 4.4.4.12
If I change the RAM to 1066 what will happen? Is that actually 4 x 1066, and it'll blow up? 2 x 1066? What is the 798? What actual 'true' RAM speed am I seeing at "800/798"? Why doesn't "Linked" automatically set the RAM speed appropriately per the OC'd CPU speed? What about this "ratio" thing, where I've read that the best is 1:1? Mine is currently at 13:11
What I want is the RAM operating at top speed, regardless of the CPU being OC'd or stock. The required voltage increase seems to suggest it is, but the numbers say otherwise.
Any help/advice/input would be gratefully received. I've read a whole bunch of guides but none of those I've been able to find cover this area in any detail.
Edit: Ok, I've noticed in Everest that the Memory Bus is 398.9, which doubles-up to the 798 in the Adjusted DRAM Frequency field in the BIOS. Eg, 800mhz. So, if my RAM is rated for 1066 I could enter that into the BIOS and see my Memory Bus do 533mhz? I'm assuming that the 4.4.4.12 timings I've achieved have come out of the overhead I'm saving by running the RAM at 800mhz?
If so, which give the greater performance benefit (in games mainly), 4.4.4.12 at 800mhz, or 5.5.5.18 at 1066mhz?

Quote from: AaronYuri on 11-May-08, 21:21:03
No, the memory frequency isn't bottle necked by the FSB. The FSB is just the base for calculating the memory frequency.
Oh well, that doesn't mean much to me. But from what I can gather from the thread you linked there isn't much advantage to running the RAM at 1066 vs 800 anyway, as the performance difference I'd see in games would be negligible.
    Thanks Aaron.
