Question about capturing ProRes HQ from D5

I routinely capture 10bit uncompressed video from HDSR or D5 to FCP thru a Kona 3.
Yesterday, I captured from the D5 (1920x1080 23.976psf) directly to ProRes HQ using the AJA Kona 1020x1080 23.98sf capture preset. The captured ProRes HQ format came in as 23.98 "upper field dominant". Is this normal with psf material, I thought it would be "none" for progressive.

Sorry, I meant Progressive segmented Frame.

  • Question about Quicktime/Prores/FinalCutPro

    Hi there,
I'm quite a noob in this, but I searched a lot for an answer on the internet, but couldnt find any..
Now I'm going to try to explain what my problem is. Don't judge me on my weird terms or some, haha.
Well, I have those HDV files converted in Prores files so I could easily edit them..
I actually didnt do this myself, but I do have the files.
Well now, I wanted to set my FCP setting into prores compressor, but it wasnt in the list.
I tried to install the prores codec from apple.com, but I couldnt. He keeps saying "You already have a newer version of this software installed."
I guess there's my problem, that I don't have the codec? That's why it's not in the list...?
But I really don't know how to fix this.
Hopefully someone is willing to help me out!
    Thanks a lot

FCS2/FCP6 comes with the ProRes codecs and full support for them. You're not going to be able to "add" them to an older version of FCP. You didn't supply the link you used for the download, but check any "system requirements" on that page (or post the link, and we'll verify).
If you absolutely cannot upgrade your software (or Mac, if that is necessary), you will need to get those HDV tapes into a format that you can edit. I don't know if your iMac will handle native HDV editing, but that may be an option for you. (ie, connect the HDV deck to your Mac, ingest through Firewire).

  • One last question about capturing from tape

I have a box full of family VHS tapes that I will be capturing into the computer to digitally archive. However, I want to make sure I am doing it the best possible way. These are the two things most important to me:
    1. Quality
    2. Longevity
    1. Quality
I have a VHS/MiniDV JVC SR-VS30 deck connected via firewire into my 2014 iMac. I know that firewire is typically the best option when capturing DV footage into the computer. However, is this still true for VHS and other forms of old tape. I can hook anything up to this deck via composite/s-video in and go out through the firewire connection. However, I wasn't sure if firewire was the best coming from a VHS tape. I also have an old video capture card that has a straight s-video/composite input. Which would be more native to the VHS/analog tapes as far as keeping original quality and the best possible image?
When I use the JVC deck, some programs will capture the vhs tapes and others won't because they won't recognize unless I'm using the DV side. For example, FCPX recognizes the deck, but when I go to import unless it's a dv, it will say "no tape" and I cannot capture anything. iMovie will capture files as .DV. Quicktime will also recognize the deck and capture files as apple prores MOV files. When I compare the QT and iMovie, the QT files look better in my opinion, though I don't know if they truly are. The iMovie dv files have jagged edges like tv lines or something during quick movement and like others say about firewire it looks a little "milky" (though I know this isn't necessarily a bad thing). The QT clips don't necessarily look sharper, but they don't have the hideous jagged edges.
So my question before I start this large project is:
Which capture methods above would you use, or what else would you recommend for best quality?
    2. Longevity
Which file format would you recommend saving these files (or just keeping them as they are at capture) for long term storage? When I come back to these files in 10 years and need to convert them to something new, I want them to have the greatest chance of being compatible with whatever lies ahead. There are so many different file formats.
Many thanks for any help along this long process

I want to make sure I am doing it the best possible way.
I have done lots of that.
For maximum quality here is my procedure:  ADVC300 > iMovie 06 > iDVD 09/11.
To get your VHS video into iMovie, use the Grassvalley ADVC300 .  With the ADVC300 Audio and Video go in, FireWire comes out. It also comes with a nice Macintosh application that works flawlessly with iMovie 06 and iDVD 09/11 (I have used it a few times with iMovie 11).
The ADVC300 has been discontinued by the manufacturer. The included software (which is not really necessary but does enhance performance) is not compatible with OS 10.7 or newer.  You can still find the ADVC300 for sale in a few outlets as well as eBay. It will sell between 50% and 100% ABOVE its retail price. Yes, it's that good.
If you can’t find the ADVC300, use the Grassvalley ADVC110.
I have a drawer full of analog-to-digital converters.   After using the Grass Valley ADVC300 I find nothing else acceptable.
The program that comes with the ADVC300 has some nice filters that can improve video and audio of the source material. The ADVC300 will take Audio and Video from any source (VCR, Tivo, Satellite Receiver) and convert it to FireWire (iMovie will treat it like a camera).
I would use iMovie 06 with iDVD 09/11, why?
iMovie 09, 11, and 13 uses 'single field processing' meaning every other horizontal line of the video is thrown out, which reduces the sharpness of the footage. iMovie 06 uses ALL of the image to form the video.  (Also the latest iMovie CANNOT set Chapeters !)
After lots of experimenting I get the best results using OS 10.6, iMovie 06, and iDVD 09/11.  My movies look just like Hollywood!
My primary computer is a Mac Pro, so I just use one of the four hard drives and boot OS 10.6. You can also partition a single hard drive to achieve the same results.
This may seem like more trouble than you want to go through.  However, I find the superior quality to be well worth it.

  • Question about capturing from FX1000

Hello everyone. This is my first post here tho I have been searching these forums for some time now.
I looked for my question but i could not find one that helped me.
    Anyway.
So I just got a HDR-FX1000 and I love it!
I just filmed my last show and when I plugged it into my television with the HDMI cable i was drooling.
so now I want to import the footage onto FCE but the problem is that It's looking like a normal ol' HD camera. The colors are not even as bright. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with my computer screen but I have a new Macbook pro so I doubt it.
I exported it onto quicktime and still the same. I am now dumping it onto iDVD and I'm going to see how that looks on my television.
Anyway is there some kind of settings I should be using when Capturing from my FX1000? and is there a good export setting to retain the same HDV quality?
Thank you very much in advanced. I appreciate any and all help!
also, if you are in the Los Angeles area and wanna do any shooting with my FX1000 let me know. I'll go if its not too far and won't charge you anything. I'd like the experience of using the camera
    Luie

I'm starting to wonder if it has anything to do with the Fire Wire I have. I had a bunch of Fire Wire cables around the house but I had to buy a new one because of the MacBook Pro. It's very thin too...
the HDMI cable is really thick. Anyone think this an be a part of the issue?

  • Question about Custom Shape Files from newbie to PS

My husband bought me PS CS4 Extended. That said, I have never used PS at all. I have always used PSP. Please don't hate me!
I have figured out that one loads actions and presets. OK, got that. The question I have is if I can have my Custom Shapes and Actions on a completely different partition? I ask this because there is not enough room on the partition for me to continue adding shapes and such to PS in the program itself. I am figuring that I can since I have tio load them into the program anyway, but am asking to be sure so that I don't screw anything up.
Another question I have is if I am able to point PS to where all of my plugins are that I already have installed in PSP, which also happen to be on a different partition. In PSP all one has to do is to point the program to where they are and all is good and they can be used within said program. Does PS allow for this also? If not, do I have to re-install all of the plugins into the PS program itself? I just don't have that much room on the partition that my PS resides on because of all of the other pregrams that I have. Also, does everything I load into PS just stay loaded or do I have to reload each time I want to use that particular preset?
I do hope that ya'll can understand my questions and thank you for any help in advance.

the benefit of having the presets in the proper folders is that you can select them from the fly-out menus instead of having to search for them using the Load command so yes, you can have them wherever you want. I doubt though that you don't have enough disk space for them, for instance, all the actions that come with Photoshop take up about 200kb, the custom shapes are about 700kb but that's because they come in duplicates. And yes, all that you load up stays in Photoshop until you remove them, no need to reload them at program start. For plug-ins you have the option to set an additional plug-in folder by going to Edit->Preferences->Plug-ins, don't know about needing to install them though as i don't use any

  • Question about capturing with JVC GY-HD200U

I am looking at this particular camcorder, JVC GY-HD200U, and was wondering if there is any issues capturing footage into FCP6. Does any one own or worked with the JVC GY-HD200U or early model?
share you thoughts about this camcorder if you have worked with it.
    much thanks

Excuse my naivety here, but how does one go about importing HDV 720 as 'pro res'?
Can this be done by changing the import / capture settings, or does it require transferring the material to HD?
I'm using footage from my JVC HD GY100 in 24p. I've spent over a week trying to import the material into FCP through a JVC BR-HD50 deck with absolutely no luck, and it's getting really frustrating!!
I'm dealing with over 80 tapes of footage, so I don't have the option of going through each tape and logging individual clips. I've been trying to import entire tapes at a time.
I keep getting a 'stream error' prompt when attempting to capture.
I've tried with both start / stop detect on and off, I've tried to 'capture now', which seems to work until the very end of the tape / capture, at which time another error is reported. I've also attempted to set in and out points a minute or two from the beginning and end of the tapes, then batch capture the logged tape. Again, no dice.
Unfortunately I haven't had luck with anything, and I'm getting very frustrated.
I'm not a professional editor, so perhaps I'm missing something very basic? I have no clue why this format is so difficult to import!! I've never spent over a week trying to figure out how to import footage!
I don't care whether each tape I import is an entire tape or cut up into clips at time breaks, but I can't seem to get anything!!!
I really appreciate anyone's suggestions here. I'm at my wits end.
And again, I don't usually do this type of work, so if you could describe in detail any suggestions / solutions I would be very grateful. Many thanks.

  • Basic question about accessing card reader from browser

    Hi,
I am very new to card technology. I have a very basic and general question not directly related to java cards.
I need to write a web application that allows the user to read a card with a card reader.
For that I maybe need to write an applet that has to access a native DLL and call methods
to get the card ID. I already have that DLL (written in Delphi) that reads multi-technology cards.
Then pass that ID to the application server to retrieve complete information
about the card holder and display them on the user browser.
Please could someone guide me on useful resources for that kind of development, for example
already existing developments, personal experience, design solutions ?
    Thanks.
    Adriano

    Hi Joseph,
One thing I forgot to tell is that I work with contactless cards and readers.
Contactless cards use radio frequency. Despite this fact, the problem stays the same. I already have a Delphi DLL that reads contactless cards.
What I need is a way to retrieve card holder information from a client browser. The card contains a unique ID. My idea is to use an applet that reads that ID on the client-side and then calls a servlet on the server-side to retrieve holder information associated with that ID, i.e. first and last names, and finally displays them on the client browser.
So the card contains only the unique ID, a database on the server-side contains all other related data.
Technically the applet has to call the DLL via JNI.
Do you think that using an applet that way is a good solution, do you see simpler solutions, is there security issues ?
    Thanks.

  • Question about calling a procedure from a URL

    Hi
In an Apex 3.0 application (which is not public) I use a procedure call in a URL to download the person's photo, if any. The call looks like this:
    {img src=#OWNER#.download_photo?p_id=&P10_ID.}
This works fine. However, I found out that I can run that procedure just typing that URL in a web browser, without the need to be logged in to any application!
This seems to me like a flaw in my procedure and I think I am missing something. In a way it makes sense, as there is not any reference in the URL to the application.
How can I make this procedure to run only if I am logged in the application it is supposed to be run from?
    Thanks
    Luis

    Luis,
There is a section (Security Issues to Consider) in the file upload/download how-to that describes how to handle this. Also, Anton Nielsen describes a technique linked to from Re: About file .

  • Question about capturing clips

I’m using Pre7 and capturing video from an HDV tape camcorder via FireWire connection. On the Capture window, I am able to record (capture) from the camera with no problems. But is there a way I can capture from the camera (miniDV tapes), without having to do each scene one at a time? I mean am I able to set things up so that I can have Pre7 record and create each clip automatically as each scene changes?

If you have the option to Split Scene by Timecode selected in the capture workspace, the video should break at every scene (whenever the camcorder was put on pause) as you're capturing. If that doesn't work, you can try Split Scene by Content.
You can also break already captured footage by right-clicking on it in the Project media panel and selecting Scene Detect.

  • Question about creating JPEG still from movie clip?

The aperture help says that a frame will be copied as part of a stack .. But I do not see this to be the case. When I make a frame from a movie, I don't see ANYTHING different in the browser window. Please help!

Yes, you can do that, but it's a little difficult to advise
you the best way with the information provided:
    Can you clarify:
Do you want to play the main clip while the thumbs continue
to load... or do you want to preload the thumbs, then play the main
clip, then do the tweening when the main timeline reaches the end?
    This way is easy enough.
If you want them to continue to load and then do the tweening
at the end of the main timeline (e..g with a stop() on the last
frame) then its also not complicated, but you need to cover the
situation where the loading of the thumbs may not yet have
completed by that time (perhaps the risk is low if the timeline is
long, but its a sensible thing to address regardless).
Also consider whether you want anything to be hidden (i.e.
_visible=false) at any point - e.g. before the thumbs have finished
    loading.
As a starting point I suggest you would probably put the code
    after
    removeMovieClip("thumbLoading");
and before the last curly bracket (" } ") in a separate
function on the main timeline, e.g.
    function tweenThumbs(){
    //code here
(its actually not easy to be sure, because I can't visualize
    what exactly it does)
what you would do next depends on the answers to the above
    questions.

  • Question About Ship-To-Party from SAP ECC.

    Hello,
In SAP ECC I have 2 Account Groups:
    1. For Customers
    2. For Ship-To-Party.
My Question is: When I download the Customers from ECC to CRM I specify in PIDE both Account Groups. Is the relationship created during the download or it must be created manually?
    Best Regards,

    Hi Jose M,
The BP relationship will be created automatically during the BP download based. However, if you have to extend the relationship, you can do it manually in CRM.

  • Question about to recover data from windows essential 2012 (with raid0 or 1)with third party software !

    hi,
I like to know if it is possible to install data recovery software on a extern harddisk ,and run it from there , just run  the  third party software in the memory of windows essential 2012 to recover data from its  harddisk  which has
    raid 0 or 1.
if it is possible to install third party softare on extern harddisk or on usb stick on run it from there which steps I have to take ,or if there is some article about  it on windows website.
how to install third party softwares on extern harddisk or usb stick on run it from there.
    thanks
    johan
    h.david

    Hi johan,
Based on your description, I understand that you want to know how install a third-party software on an external
harddisk or usb and then run this software from there. Regarding this issue, I suggest that you should contact with the third-party software support and confirm it. Since most programs use windows registry entries, and may rely on some .dll files. If all relevant
auxiliary files and configurations of this software were installed in one directory tree, you may be able to install and run it on an external harddisk or usb.
    Hope this helps.

  • Question about Captured footage and naming

    Hi everyone,
I am trying to archive some old work by saving the TL's and by storing footage names down for future problems with clients shall they arise.
What I am wonder is when footage is captured you name it and as the name appears in your bin (ie.... Filming Day 1 Tape 1a) it does not appear that way in the captured scratch folder. For my purpose which name should I write down? The old as I see it in FCP? or the one "Untitled 1" as it appears in the captured folder?
If I ever need to come back to it and I have to recapture the footage which name will FCP look for?
    Thanks for the help!

If you name your clip when you log it, before you capture it, that is the name it has in the capture scratch folder.
If you change the name later, in a bin, the name of the file in the capture scratch folder does not change, and you have laid a trap for yourself, as it will be a painful experience re-connecting later if the names don't match.
If you, or the others in your shop, captured carefully, you should be able to batch capture from the project file.
Unfortunately, if you or someone else did not take care in logging and capturing, you may be in for some difficulty when those clients return for revisions.
One strategy that might work in this circumstance would be to copy the whole project to a separate disk – media and all. This will get expensive quickly if you are doing any volume, but might save you for a few poorly managed, very important, projects.
    Hope this helps.

  • Question about migrating my stuff from iMac to a new one

Hi I must be on my fourth consecutive iMac now, and it is late 2007 model I think. I am considering about getting a new one soon. It is very tempting to use Migration Assistant to haul everything to the new one from the old one but:
After 4 previous migrations, will I have a slower system than a clean, new one with just the files, not migrated settings and other stuff?
Are there some negative effects of migrating vs installing everything from scratch?
    Thanks for any input!
    BR
    Timo

When using Migration Assistant in my opinion it's best to connect to either a Time Machine Backup via USB or Firewire to the new machine. DO NOT use Wi-Fi to migrate. Also remember if you should prepare the old machine to ensure all of it's apps are up-to-date and it is running well otherwise.
I would also recommend using Setup Assistant to migrate rather than Migration Assistant. Both are almost the same, however SA is what starts up when you turn on any new Mac for the first time. It will come to a point where it asks if you are migrating from an older Mac. Select yes, select your TM backup EHD and connect it (USB or Firewire remember??) to the new machine and select the options and let it do the migration. This method normally results in a smooth migration and will not create a new user account like Migration Assistant will.

  • Question about moving a project from FCP to Premiere to do color correcting/sound finalizing.

My friend and i have been editing a film on FCP express. I've been learning more about editing and color correcting recently and have been teaching myself on  Adobe Premiere. I offered to color correct the film on Premiere on my system. I'm curious what the best way to do this would be. is it possible to take the timeline from FCB with the raw data and somehow open that in CS? Or should he export the pre corrected final cut without correcting as a certain type of file, then I work on that, then export that as the final cut?

If FCP express has XML export, then you can export the project and then import the XML into Premiere Pro.  It will give you the basics of the timeline and basic transforms for each clip (position, scale, rotation).  However, not everything comes across - titles and 3rd party effects will not come across.
Given that, another option is to render out the entire movie and then grade it in Premiere Pro.  But you lose a lot of control if you go that way.
The third option is to import into Premiere Pro and rebuild the bits you might be missing from FCP and then you have both the control and options.
    Hope this helps,
    Dennis
