Question about compatibility of OS X 10.6.8 system disk

I recently bought a used early 2006 iMac Intel (Model 4.1) from an authorized Apple reseller (my old iMac G5's logic board finally died and was not worth fixing), which came with a fresh install of Snow Leopard OS X 10.6. I have updated all the Apple software on this computer and backed it up onto a bootable backup firewire external HD.
My question is: If I buy a new OS X 10.6.8 system disk from Apple, and if I ever have to reinstall the operating system onto the iMac (NOT an erase and install), would there be compatibility problems resulting from my using a NEW disk on an iMac whose (updated) OS X 10.6.8 system software was originally installed with ANOTHER OS X 10.6 system disk? (I don't know for sure what version of OSX 10.6 was used in the original install, although I think it was 10.6.8.)
Incidentally, having Snow Leopard is Great. It makes much more software available that was not compatible with Tiger. (I also have some newish PCs with Linux that help meet my computer needs.)
Many thanks for any feedback.

Apple sells Mac OS X 10.6.3 DVDs. These can be used on any Intel Mac which originally shipped with 10.6.2 or earlier without running into compatibility problems.

  • Question about compatibility w/ Mac OS

Ok... I'm new here (since I've never had a problem with my Zen Vision: M, 30 GB) so I don't know how many times before my question has been asked. I'm thinking about purchasing a Mac Book, and don't know how my Zen will work on it. I know that Mac's can now run Windows, and I've also learned about?this 3rd party?software called XNJB for Creative users running on OS X. My question is, is there any other option? I spoke to this guy at the apple store that said you can install Windows Media Player on OS X, so would it be possible to just use that to transfer my files into my Zen without having to install Windows or some third party program?Message Edited by cinsere89 on 05-08-200709:08 AM

Only software that I am aware of for syncing a zen vison m to a mac is:http://www.wentnet.com/projects/xnjb/?

  • A Question about Compatibility with Parallels

Hello, all. I wasn't too sure where to post this, and I saw someone else posted a Parallels question here so I figured it wouldn't be a big deal. I have a MacBook Pro 15 Inch that I bought in May this year, and I was wondering if I could use Parallels to install Windows XP on it. I'm not sure if it will work because Apple apparently designed my computer to only work with Windows 7 if I were to install it through Boot Camp, but since I'm not really in the mood to shell out two hundred bucks for that OS, I was hoping I'd be able to just get Parallels and install Windows XP without any post-installation issues (like being unable to connect to the Internet and such, like the problems one would run into through a Boot Camp install if they didn't install the drivers). Could I use Parallels on my Mac instead of Boot Camp and install Windows XP?
Also, I have a minor question that I think I might already know the answer to, but I just thought I'd ask anyway while I'm here. Could Parallels Desktop 4 work with my computer?

               Yes.
Could Parallels Desktop 4 work with my computer?
Verify that you machine meets the below requirements:
Hardware and Software Requirements for Parallels Desktop version 4
    Hardware Requirements
Any Macintosh computer with an Intel processor (1.66 GHz or greater). To run 64-bit
operating systems in virtual machines, an Intel Core 2 or later processor is required.
Minimum 1 GB of memory, 2 GB of memory is recommended.
CPU must support  Intel-VTx Virtualization feature
Almost on all CPUs used in Mini Macs Virtualization is supported, but in several early Mac Mini models it may be disabled in firmware.
Please see article http://kb.parallels.com/en/5653 how to enable Intel VT-x Virtualization support.
Note: Your Mac must have enough memory to run Mac OS X and your Mac applications,
plus the memory required for the virtual machine's operating system and the applications
installed in it.   About 300 MB of disk space on the boot volume for the Parallels Desktop installation.
About 15 GB of disk space for each virtual machine.
    Software Requirements
Mac OS X Leopard v10.5.2 or later
Mac OS X Tiger v10.4.11 or later

  • Question About compatibility

Is Lenovo G500 compatible with windows 10?(Aka Are there gonna be any very serious issue if you update a Lenovo g500 to windows 10?) EDIT: I saw the compatibility list and it says that is not compatible but the "Get Windows 10" app says it is, can anyone please tell me if it will be ok to upgrade or not?

    Hello,
When running Windows, there will be absolutely no difference between your Mac and any other PC that has the same processor, graphics card, etc.
So, yes, you'll be able to use all the same games that you could on a similarly equipped PC. The Mac is just a PC that can also run the Mac OS.
Understand, that you will need to run the Windows games in Windows. The Mac OS is only going to run Mac OS software (unless you use something like the Parallels program that permits running Windows and the Mac OS Simultaneously).
    I hope this helps.

Hi, I currently have an K8N Neo2 Platinum socket 939 board, 2 gig of OCZ Platinum PC3200 DDR400 RAM, a Lian Li V1000 ATX case, an AMD Athlon 64 3000 processor, 2 Sata 1 hard drives and a TAGAN TG380-U01 380W power supply. All this stuff is from around 2005.

Also, does it have onboard graphics or will I need a dedicated video card?

     Case, HDD - Yes
     Onboard graphics - No
PSU, maybe but probably not. Something with more power would probably be wise to get. What PSU you get would depend on the CPU & graphics card you get.

  • Newbie question about compatability

I am a long time Mac user, and have been forced to use Windows at work. I am going to buy a new laptop, which of course has to run Windows, but would really like to buy an Intel Mac so I could run either OS. From what I have read, theoretically, when one boots up in Windows using Boot Camp, the intel Mac should work just the same as any other box from, say, Dell, or wherever. I am paranoid of dropping a lot of money on a new laptop and then being frustrated by subtle problems with compatiability that hamper my production in my work environment. Are there truly no major problems out there, or is anyone having serious problems. I am not a gamer, and am not working in a graphics-intensive environment. Of course I will need flawless internet connectivity (wireless), and the ability to print without hassles. Just looking for the real scoop. All opinions welcome. Thanks!

I'd say if you just need a specific application or 2 and especially if you can run them virtualized under OS X using something like Parallels or VMWare Fusion, that's your best bet. If you're not sure how well they'll run in those environments, see if you can try them on a friend's or coworker's mac. If you need more extensive support of Windows or you want the full performance you'll need to use Bootcamp.
For the most part it runs just fine. One minor annoyance is the keyboard is designed for OS X not windows. You can do anything you can with a Windows keyboards but some tasks will require using FN key combinations like FN+Delete to get the "Delete" key of a Windows keyboard, or FN+arrow keys to get pgup/pgdown/home/end. Arguably, this is more a limitation of the choices used for the smaller laptop keyboard and affect OS X as well as windows.
The more serious issue is that the Bootcamp driver for the Touchpad is quite flawed. While it does work, it does not support tapping the pad to activate a click, and while it does support 2-finger scrolling and 2-finger+click to simulate the right-mouse button (which is physically missing) the scrolling is WAY too sensitive and needs to be turned down all the way in the control panel, and frequently there are erratic movements of the mouse towards the right side of the screen when using 2-finger gestures. Some people of copmlained it is so erratic right-clicking on windows controls is virtually impossible. For other's it's not quite so bad but still quite annoying.
If you attach an external mouse, you should have no issues. And if the keyboard is an issue, you can also attach an external keyboard.
Those are the major issues I've had related to running Windows on a Macbook Pro. In principle the touchpad issues can be corrected with an updated driver from Apple, but we don't know when that will come. Whether these are dealbreakers or not is up to you. If you're principlally going to be using it at a desk so that using an external mouse isn't an issue, you'll probably be happy with it. But if you need to use the touchpad for portability, it can get annoying.
Another major issue is sometimes when closing the lid (or using other methods to put the laptop to sleep) it will not go to sleep properly and enter some kind of hung state where the system cannot be reactivated but neither can it be shut down properly and a hard power cycle is necessary. However, there have been reports of this problem while using OS X as well as Windows, so I'm not sure it's specifically a Windows issue.
In any case, you should wait until next week when there should be new laptops announced. Hopefully those resolve the power issue and maybe with a little luck Apple will finally release a new version of the Bootcamp drivers.

  • Questions about using FILE adapter to connect to other systems

    Hi,
in my PI scenario i am facing a problem in usage of the file adapter.
Our PI system is installed on a UNIX server. The target system for upload an download files is a WINDOWS system. The software installed on the WINDOWS system is only able to export the needed file lokal on the WINDOWS server.
Between UNIX systems i can connect a together used fileshare folder. But this won´t help me in my UNIX <> WINDOWS scenario.
I thougt on using an FTP server on the WIDNOWS system to make the PI able to connect via the FTP adapter but this works fine for one or two systems. I don´t think that this ist the best solution when connection to a lot WINDOWS systems, but mayby i am wrong.
Actually i use UC4 to copy the files between the two systems.
Any ideas how to deal generally with such scenarios?
    Many thanks
    Michael

Even though if you map Unix and Windows OS to read the files, in the long run the design will put you in trouble. Means it requires constant support. Better you go with unix script as per the above suggestion.

    Hi,
I have a very generic question about using Flashback Database.
On my testing systems, for performance testing and simulation purposes, I want to create a guaranteed restore point so I can test impact on batch when code change releases are done, before deployment in production.  My confusion is with respect to redo logs, as summarized in the questions below:
    1. Is it possible to change redo log files, when a guaranteed restore point has been configured?
    2. If yes, will the Flashback to restore point, also change the size of the redo logs?
I could not find anything in the docs about this....hence my question....

  • [SOLVED] Basic question about x2go, freenx, etc. compatibility

My goal is to simply enable remote desktop on my soon to be headless server. Given the number of posts here at Arch explaining the trouble with freenx and the Arch support of x2go, I'm confused there is not more talk about their compatibility. And as I've just discovered, they're not:
"Various open source terminal server projects such as x2go also use the NX protocol; however, x2go is not compatible with other NX servers and clients." (NX Technology)
This leaves me in a bit of a pickle. CentOS doesn't support x2go, and Arch doesn't support freenx. What's the best interoperable solution then? Either a sever app which supports x2go or a client app that supports NXX?

xtian wrote:Speaking of way of doing things. CentOSers are very persnickty about how you're supposed to maintain your system in terms of non-core packages etc. etc. And x2go is not coming up in the forum, wiki, or in the repositories (via the commanline tool yum). Read the response to my question about installing vim7.4. Hell, you can do _whatever you want_ to your system, but that doesn't mean anyone's going to help you when you run into trouble.
That comment strikes me as perfectly reasonable. The comment is pointing out that you are trying to use the wrong tool to do the job. The tool in this case is the distro - CentOS is not intended to be used in this way (for this job). Of course, if you insist on using a spanner to hammer nails, you are free to do so. But you can't really expect your local DIY shop to help you use the spanner when the nails don't go in straight rather than suggesting you use a hammer instead.
It is just like somebody who comes here and asks how they can stick with a known-stable set of packages while getting security updates. That's not what Arch is designed for so if you try to use it that way, you'll have a hard time. Of course, you are free to do so if you wish. But if you ask for help, you'll be pointed to another distro because that is the right answer.
It has nothing to do with being "persnickty". The answer is the most helpful answer somebody can give you.
Note: I'm assuming the description of CentOS, Fedora etc. is correct. I know the description of Fedora to be correct but I don't actually know anything about CentOS. But on the assumption that description is also correct, that answer is the most helpful answer somebody could give you, even if it is not the answer you wanted to hear.

  • Questions about mac mini iTunes server, streaming to macbook pro, ipads, etc.

I'm thinking about getting a mac mini to work with my NAS as a iTunes server. I have a bunch of questions about this. I will have two iPhones, a few iPads, and a laptop that will be accessing the files. I have iTunes match. This is basically to keep an always on computer for hosting the music/movies. My questions are as follows . . .
#1 Are there any good, comprehensive guides to show you how to do this?
#2 Can the movies be accessed when not at home on the shared network?
#3 Can the iPads or the macbook pro download the shared movies to be stored locally?
#4 Back to #3, how will it work on my macbook pro with listening to music (I have iTunes match)? Say i go to library and I break out my macbook pro and I don't have internet. What happens if I download music while at home onto my macbook pro to listen to it when I go to the library? Will i start a new library on my macbook pro? How will that mesh with the home server when I come back.
#5 Is there a way to mirror files or folders? So something that I have on my macbook pro will also mirror on the home server.
Thanks for your help on this. I'll post any follow up questions.

    2. I want to replace the HD with a 128GB SSD 840. When I replace these drives, will my OS still be in tact? I have never done this job before.
No. You will have to format the drives in Disk Utility>Erase to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) and then install the OSX by using the original install disks.
3.) I want to replace the ram sticks to max capacity. This is 2 2GB sticks, Correct?
No.  An early 17" 2008 MBP will accept 6GB RAM with the following specifications:  200-pin PC2-5300 (667MHz) DDR2 SO-DIMM.  The best sources of Mac compatible RAM are OWC and Crucial.
    4.) Most difficult...
I want to extend the monitor wirelessly to a projector. I thought about using Apple TV and Airplay. However, support for airplay is for MacBooks 2011 and newer. I thought of using a PS3 and the media server, but I think this brings on a format compatibility issue. (my library is so large I could not afford to convert all my movies to MP4.) So, how would you recommend I put my extended monitor with VLC player onto a projector?
Could I possibly connect the MBP to a Mac Mini as an extension? would this work natively? I would rather use a VGA cord than F with 3rd party app BS.
    Cannot help you there.
5..) I want to Bypass iTunes this time around. I would prefer to use Finder and VLC to manage all of my music. I mostly play all my music on shuffle, so, could I create a playlist on VLC with all of my music and play it randomly? (im sure this is possible but i'd like to organize all my plans with confirmation.)
You are not obligated to use iTunes.
6.) Can i upgrade the keyboard to backlit? i've read that this is possible.
All MBPs have back lighted keyboards.  Your either needs a NVRAM reset or a repair.

  • Question about the ability of Genius Bar to help with outside software...

Hi I wasn't sure where to put this, but here's my question. I'm having a problem with the Sims 2 on my Macbook and I was wondering if I go to the Genius Bar will they be able to help me or are they strictly hands off when it's not a direct Apple product?
Also, I bought an external hard drive in the Apple Store but it's not an Apple branded product. If I'm having a problem with that, can I go to the Apple Store?

If it's a question about the installation, system requirements or compatibility with your MacBook, the Mac Genius can probably help. If you're having some kind of issue while using the Sims 2, you'll probably have to contact .
The same is true with the hard drive. If you need some help getting it connected or even formatted, they can probably help. However, if it's not powering up or you're losing files or some kind of operational issue with the hard drive after it's connected, they'll probably refer you to the manufacturer.
Usually Apple can't support other vendors' products. Someone here may be able to give you some more advice, since none of us work for Apple. There may be someone here who's already had the same issue with the Sims.

  • A question about compatiblilty of JDBC

    Hi, there,
    I have a question about JDBC 3.0 in JDK1.4.1.
We build a .jar using JDK1.4.1 and this .jar file
    provides JDBC 3.0 interface.
I then tried to call the interface under JDK1.3.1
but it keeps asking me about the getParameterMetaData()
    in PreparedStatement.
    (The error message like this:
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: java/sql/ParameterMetaData dbmaker.sql.JdbcOdbcConnection.prepareStatement(JdbcOdbcConnection.java:257)
I did implement the getParameterMetaData() method,
but I didn't call this method in my testing program.
It's quite strange since when JDK1.2 was release,
we implemented the getBlob() method in
ResultSet class and there's no problem when we
use JDK1.1 run time to call this ResultSet object.
Could any one tell me why? Is this caused by a
compatibility problem between JDK1.4 and the
    older versions of JDK?

    Hi, there,
Let me outline the condition by examples so that maybe you can help me. PLEASE! Could somebody tell us what's wrong?
    - CASE 1:
In JDK1.2, we implemented a new method getBlob which returns the type of Blob (this is done according to JDBC 2.0 specification.) in ResultSet class. We can use the .jar compiled by jdk1.2 in jdk1.1 environment.
e.g. We make a xyz.jar by jdk1.2 and the xyz.jar includes new method getBlob in ReaultSet class. Then, one java application including ResultSet class CAN run under jdk1.1 with xyz.jar, if the method ResultSet.getBlob() is not called.
    - CASE 2:
BUT, the following case which is the same as in the above condition will fail in jdk1.3 environment.
In JDK 1.4, we implemented a new method getParameterMetaData() which returns the type of ParameterMetaData. (BTW, this is done according to JDBC 3.0 specification.) in PreparedStatement class. We CANNOT use the .jar compiled by jdk1.4 in jdk1.3 environment.
e.g. We make a ttt.jar by jdk1.4 and ttt.jar includes the new method getParameterMetaData() in PreparedStatement class. Then, one java application including PreparedStatement class CANNOT be run under jdk1.3 with ttt.jar, even when the method PreparedStatement.getParameterMetaData() is not called.
