Question about contents of Lion Installer...

I created a Lion bootable installer by installing the file InstallESD.dmg onto a DVD and
it works ( I found out the hard way, Lion OS became corrupted and would not boot).
The InstallESD.dmg is found in the SharedSuppoort folder in the Installer bundle,
1) What the heck does 'InstallESD' stand for it seems to be a peculiar name
2) In the same folder there is a file named OSInstall, mpkg.  What is its purpose?
the InstallESD.dmg seems be be able to do the whole install without any other files.
I don't have a way to view *mpkg files....
Enquiring minds want to know
Jerry

"InstallESD" is named as such because that's the name somebody in Apple chose. The function of OSinstall.mpkg doesn't matter.
You (and many of us ) are delving into areas into which Apple did not intend us to go.  Keep exploring, and you will find several thousand files with inexplicable names. Way below the level at which the user operates, it is not necessary to make file names nice and self-explanatory.

  • Question about updating from Lion Mountain Lion

    Hi,
I am currently running Os x 10.7 Lion on my Macbook Pro and thinking about buying Mountain Lion from the App Store. I have a few friends who have dowloaded it and have not been able to run their messages because they do not have a serial number. What is the cause of this? How can I ensure that this will definately not happen to me? I want to upgrade to Mountain Lion purely for the use of messages and the other cool features that there is now. Is it worth it?
    Thanks.

My friends 'About this mac' section looks like this and because of this he is not able to use messages and facetime? Anyways, if I have a problem with Mountain lion, am I able to get a refund and then downgrade to lion easily?
Has he had the logic board or any other major part replaced?

  • Question About Upgrading To Lion OS

I have an iMac 27" which I got in 17-Jul.
I want to upgrade to Lion OS from Snow Leapord v10.6.8.
My question is if I go to MAC App Store and pay $29.99 for Lion OS and install it, will it format my MAC or wipe out all of my data {photo's, mp3, video, data files} ?

You should always do a full backup before any upgrade. By default Lion will not erase, but rather install over top of SL.
I usually recommend doing a fresh install though as it will make for a better experience with the new operating system.
If your interested, here's how to create a boot disc
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-20080989-263/how-to-create-an-os-x-lion-ins tallation-disc/
Once created simply go into system preferences, startup disc and select your Lion boot disc. Once restarted go into utilities, erase your hard-drive. Install Lion and then restore from a backup.

  • Question about content descriptor

what info does the content descriptor actually carry and who uses it

It has always been very basic to always maintain a  backup copy of your computer for just such an occasion.
All of your itunes content should be included ion your regular backup of your computer.
If for some reason you have failed to maintain a backup ( not good), then you can transfer itunes purchases from an iphone/ipod.  Without syncing:File>Transfer Purchases
When you sync to the computer when your get it back, it will erase the content of the iphone and replace with content from the computer.  This is why it is important to have a backup copy of your computer.
"Also, my second question. Is it possible to download a movie on my iPhone 4, sync it with my computer so that it is in my library and then put it on my iPad?"
Yes.  You can transfer purchases to wherever you want them.  You can buy on iphone, transfer to itunes ( as described above), then  sync to ipad/ipod/iphone.

  • Question about OS X Lion

How to get OS X Lion from a Mac that came with it installed already and install on it others?
My mom just purchased her new MacBook Pro today from an Apple Retail Store. It already has OS X Lion on it. Although, we have 3 other Macs that are still on Snow Leopard. Is there a way to get the Lion update onto the other computers without having to purchase it from the App Store?
I know that a plus from being able to download the Lion update from the App Store is that you can buy it once and redownload it to your other systems.
If you purchased a Mac, running Lion, wouldn't it make sense that you can still share it? Or, is this not possible?
I know it's only $30 but I was hoping she'd get one with Snow Leopard on it and then get a download card for Lion. Now I guess they've pretty much gotten all the Macs converted over.

While we all have MacBooks in this forum most of us don’t have Lion. There's a Lion Support Community where everybodyhas Lion. You should also post this question there. https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.7_lion

    Thanks,

    Dear Marco,
Thanks for th links, its quite handy. One more help required from you as its related to Idsktune. I was just reruning the idsktune on Soalris 10 box where zfs file system used, and able to see the below warning
WARNING: largefiles option is not present on mount of /, files may be limited to 2GB in size.
Could you tell me this alert specific to zfs file system, I was searching the mount parameter options specific to file size, but not able to get anything. Below are the system parameters.
    bash-3.00$ ulimit -a
core file size (blocks, -c) unlimited
data seg size (kbytes, -d) unlimited
    file size (blocks, -f) unlimited
    open files (-n) 256
    pipe size (512 bytes, -p) 10
    stack size (kbytes, -s) 8192
    cpu time (seconds, -t) unlimited
    max user processes (-u) 29995
    virtual memory (kbytes, -v) unlimited
In UFS file system I have noted, for such largefile option we are adding the "largefile" parameter in mount, below is such an example.
    /var/crash on /dev/md/dsk/d40 read/write/setuid/devices/intr/largefiles/logging/xattr/onerror=panic/dev=1540028 on Thu Aug 19 14:54:11 2010
Could you guide me on this file size warning specific to zfs file system.
Many thanks in advance for your support,

  • Question about Content Delivery

We're trying to put our catalog on CD-rom, and I want it all
to be stand-alone, so when you put the CD rom in a menu comes up
    and you can browse.
I had used Flash in the past under Macromedia, but its been a
while so my question before I buy is:
Can I make a flash animation/menu that will run on any
computer, not in a browser, and not connected to the internet? Can
I include on the CD a version of the Flash player that they can
use? Preferably having it auto-play and the menu just pops
    up.

Sure thing - been in practice for years - search for:
Projector (EXE file that you can publish from flash which
    embedds the player).
Auto Start (google this). Simple file to add to the root
level of the CD to make it auto play.
Check out www.flashjester.com and other 3rd party tools for
    extending the projector format beyond
    what Flash offers.

  • Confusion about memory for Lion installation

I have Imac Intel core 2 duo 1gb, bought Snow Leopard and Lion for upgrade, now it say's you need 2 GB, was this mentioned on the site?

2GB is to low, Apple should be more honest here.
My late 2008 MacBook worked fine with Snow Leopard but became more or less unusable with Lion. Extremely slow and also very strange errors from applications that was related to low memory. I actually suspect bugs in Lion regarding memory management but more memory installed reduces the probability of suffering from those bugs.
I have upgraded to 4GB and now it's possible to use the computer, what a difference!
I'd say that 4GB is the minimum memory requirement for most users.

  • Question about  command in getway installation and configuration for sybase

what is the mean of this command
    isql -Urecovery_account -Precovery_account_password [-Sserver] -idg4sybs_tx.sql
    what is isql

isql is the Sybase utility like SQL*Plus which allows you to execute a SQL statement or - like in this case a script.
This script creates for DG4SYBS the HS_TRANSACTION_LOG table. This table is mandatory for 2PC (distributed transactions). If your gateway does not participate in distributed transaction it is not necessary to create the table.
Commony the script needs to be passed to the Sybase admin and he will then create the table for you.

  • Question about content of alert messages

I created some alerts that are called via actions. I customazed for alerts alert categories with short and long texts.
Now when the alert is generated I get in my outlook e-mail for this alert and in the e-mail I get short and long text defined for alert. And I have admin authotizations.
On the other hand users without admin privileges get the e-mail but in e-mail is not displayed short and long text of alert. I added them authorizations for usage of all texts but it doesn't help. Are there any paramethers or special authorizations that I have to assign them.
    Thanks in advance.

    Solved.

  • Some basic question about SCM Installation

    Hi Folks,
Could you please advice me about some basic questions about SCM and its installation -
Q1. Do I need to have an R/3 System to be able to practice OR demo the SCM system?
Q2. If, yes, which version of SCM is compatible with the ECC 5.0?
Q3. What are the basic requirements to install SCM (version compatible with ECC 5.0) and ECC on a oracle db and windows OS?
Q4. Does SCM have APO and BI as an inbuilt functionality OR does the user need to purchase these as an Add-On?
I know these are some basic questions, but these will help me give me a direction.
    With best wishes,
    Krishna

    Hello Krishna -
Q1. Do I need to have an R/3 System to be able to practice OR demo the SCM system?
---> There are various Modules in SCM Like APO (Sub Modules  DP (stand alone), SNP Needs Master data from R/3 and has to pass on transactional Data to R/3, PPDS same as SNP, GATP same as SNP), ICH needs Data from R/3 to work with. Core Interface (CIF) connects R/3 to APO for transferring data.
Q2. If, yes, which version of SCM is compatible with the ECC 5.0?
-->For thorough understanding explore the following links

    -->Refer Above
Q4. Does SCM have APO and BI as an inbuilt functionality OR does the user need to purchase these as an Add-On?
--> APO comes with a small BI inbuilt functionality. you can only perform certain functions using that BI.
    Hope this helps.

Question about free downloading Mavericks. On checking Mavericks before downloading that there are no Bangla language in the list. I occasionally use Bangla in my present Mountain Lion. No reason to be embarassed. You are not alone.
You will need an external drive. If you have a Time Machine drive without enough disk space you can create the clone there however it's advised that you keep your Time Machine and clone on separate drives. If the drive dies you loose both types of backup.
Download and install the clone software. Everyone has their favorite. These are the two most common applications used. I prefer SuperDuper because of it's simplicity in setting up. It's also free for the first clone where with CCC you have to give a Credit Card then cancel if you do not want to keep.
    SuperDuper! http://www.shirt-pocket.com/
    CCC http://www.bombich.com/download.html
Select your drive in the To popup. Click on Copy Now. That's it.
Yes, it really is that simple....

  • Basic questions about JRE installation

I am using NSIS to make a installer, which insalls the JRE 1.5, JMF, Javamp3, then our own software packages.....
Firstly I have some basic question about the general installatio/deinstallation.
1 Why sometimes is it required to reboot computer for the installed software to take effect, e.g.
JRE 1.5. If not, what doest NOT take effect? (Actually in many cases, it seems to work even if not reboot the computer).
    Regarding the JRE 1.5,
    I am wondering:
1 where is the registry entry written in windows?
2 how to make the JRE installation process silent?
    Thanks !
