  • Questions about converting files in order to import to iMovie '09?

I was able to import the videos from my camera (.mts files) into iMovie '09, but now when I click Import from Camera, iSight opens up instead. Since I can't find out why it won't open up my camera files now, I have decided on just converting the files. I just have a question about converting though. The videos I recorded from my camera are in HD. They're very good quality. If I convert the videos from .mts into .mp4, would that reduce the quality of the video?

When that happens to me I get stubborn and make iMovie see the camera by shutting down and reopening iMovie, because I don't want another level of transcoding. If that doesn't work and you have a card reader of even better, a sd slot on your iMac, just plug the card in. If it appears on the desktop iMovie should see it, and if it appears on your desktop then iMovie should read it.
I have a Canon HFS 100 that works best if I take the card out and plug it into the computer.
The times I converted to .mp4, I thought the quality did degrade, because it had to be converted to .mp4 and then imported as AIC. But I am not an expert on whether iMovie can deal with .mp4 directly.
Canons require that one have the camcorder plugged into a power outlet, another reason to use a card reader.
What kind of camcorder do you have?  With some camcorders, if one takes both photos and video, the video won't be read.
When nothing works, occasionally deleting iMovie preferences works.

When I convert from 60>23.98 in the Gopro app, it works fine.
Does anyone know if there is any quality loss in this app?
Also does anyone know another free software tht works great to convert markIII 60>23.98 footage?
    Thank u thank u thank u !!!!

Questions about Cinema Tools should be asked in the Final Cut Studio forum.

  • General question about converting...

    Hi,
I'm kinda new to editing and I'm working on a project here using PP CS3 and a lot of footage in .vob file format.
I've read some posts in this forum, and I know that a lot of people have problems importing .vob files and that a lot of users recommend using Premiere Elements.
Now that is for a few reasons not an option for me, and I've kinda had a good expercience importing .vob files via the Avisynth method, which really works perfectly (no red frames, etc.) - BUT PP starts crashing when exporting a project bigger than 2-3 min using those .vob files...
That does not happen when I use .avi (or other) footage...
I've read in other posts that people recommend converting the .vob files to (uncompressed) .avi - and I tried that, but it seems to me - just looking at the footage - that the quality is slightly worse...
Is that in general the case, that you loose quality when converting to .avi (or maybe converting in general) ?
What output format would you recommend converting to (from .vob) when trying to keep the quality but getting a smaller file size than uncompressed .avi ?
Btw, I use Carbon Coder for converting the footage...
Thanx for your help in advance !
    Mike

    Harm,
    thanx for your reply.
The footage was given to me in .vob file format, so I can't play it through the camera...
And coming back to the Apple Juice ;), I know that the quality did already take a hit that's why I'm (desperately) trying to keep the quality we have to start with...
What about converting to .avi using the HuffYUV codec (read that in another post)?

  • Question about Dolby Digital 5.1 in Soundtrack Pro 3

    Hi folks,
I am pretty confused in regards to using Soundtrack Pro 3 to create and export a AC-3 dolby digital 5.1 file to be used in burning a Blu Ray DVD using Toast Titanium 11. I admit that overall I am somewhat Final Cut Studio savy but for the life of me I cannot find reliable and understandable tutorials re: the dolby digital thing. I am hoping that there are people out there who will be patient with my admitted ignorance
So, what I am working on?
107 minute feature documentary film edited using FCP 7 with 65 tracks of audio mixed down (using STP3) to six (1 & 2 dedicated to Voice, 3 & 4 dedicated to sfx and ambient sounds, 5 & 6 dedicated to music.)
What do I want to do?
My film is going be to be screened at a festival next month and so I want to burn a blu ray disc (using Toast Titanium 11) with AC-3 Dolby digital 5.1 audio as apposed to 2 channel stereo.
    What I don't understand?
I'm not entirely sure how the Dolby 5.1 export using STP3 works. My questions are:
Will it take a 2 channel stereo final mix and convert and export it so that it will be a Dolby Digital? If so, what about the 6 channels of audio that I mentioned before. Is it better to mix those 6 down to 2 before doing the  Dolby 5.1 export?
If so, what if the theatre equipment (or any home dvd player) is not able to play Dolby 5.1? Will it then play the Blu Ray in 2 channel stereo or will there be issues?
Is there a 'standard' Dolby Digital setup when having to choose the 'Audio Coding Mode?'
    And/or:
What settings would you suggest for very high quality Blu Ray export?
Anyways, I know there is a helluva lot of questions there but I obviously wanna get this right. Huge thanks in advance to any advice/suggestions you can give.
    Cheers!

    HI,
    briefly from what comes to mind is;
your tracks need to be assigned via the Surround Sound Panner options, either or both in the tracks and submixes.  Read about Surround Sound in Soundtrack Pro and also the effect options via the sound design reverberation. (The latter can create surround from a stereo submix as well )
The next chapter is the export option.  FILE>EXPORT
The master can be optionally exported in Dolby surround AC-3 with a number of options you need to set in this window.
Then burning is the next chapter. I trust Toast can manage but have not tried yet.
When burning to Blue Ray one actually should use full resolution PCM files  WAV format for highest quality
Audio Surround Sound. The Export then would need to be uncompressed from your final STP mix in single mono files (which is an option in STP ) and then imported into a special burning program.....
THese are my 2 cents in general.

  • Question about the digital adapter

    Hi-
Fios just came to town and we have a Tivo HD so cable cards there, so that's what we'll order.  We also have an old analog TV in the bedroom with one of the government subsidized $40 converter boxes on it so we can watch OTA TV.  My question is- do I need to order the digital adapter as well, or can the FIOS coax go through the $40 converter box?  Just to watch local or basic- I know we won't get HD or premium.  Just need something to watch while we fall asleep....
Next question- I've read this forum and seems to be problems ordering initial service WITHOUT ordering a STB as well.  Is that still the case?
    Thanks all!

Fios won't work with the government box, those are for OTA only. If you want to watch Fios channels, you'll need the digital adapter or another one of their boxes.

  • Question about "Convert ID3 Tags" command

I just used "Convert ID3 Tag" to convert all the songs in a library to ID3v2.4. When it was done, abotu half the album art had been killed. I have a backup, so nothing is lost, but I did not expect this to happen. My questions: (1) Is this expected behavior or a bug?, and (2) Any ideas why some album art survived and some did not?

Thank you! I actually managed to figure it out myself before you replied.
For anyone else out there who might be interested:
Change the import settings in iTunes > Preferences > General, to Apple Lossless Encoder. Then you can select the files/albums you want to convert, and click on the Advanced menu while holding down the Options/Alt-key, and click "Create Apple Lossless Version". I found that it doesn't actually convert the existing WAV-files, but creates an Apple Lossless copy of every single file, so I had to spend some time weeding out the WAV-files afterwards. This is a one-time effort, though, as every CD will be imported as Apple Lossless from now on.
Better still, solved my problem with the album artwork!

  • Question about converting to 128kbps for iphone 4

good day. i was wondering about the 'convert higher bit rate songs to 128kbps' option. i always import my bought cd's in apple lossless, and i guess the music i buy on itunes is 256, so that said i have a few playlists on my 16gb iphone 4 and with all the other stuff on there i still have 9gb's free. would it be worth it to me to convert the songs to 128kbps? will the sound be noticeably worse? i have what are considered really good headphones as well so how will that work out as well? thanks for any help. really wondering about the sound quality in case i end up using more of my memory with pics and apps in the future.

would it be worth it to me to convert the songs to 128kbps? will the sound be noticeably worse?
On the iPhone while moving around, sitting in an office, doing stuff, you will likely not notice any difference.
Perhaps if you sit in a very quiet room and really concentrate on listening, you may notice very minor differnece in quality.
That option is to save space on the iDevice. If you have plenty, don't use it.
Note that when you use this option on the Summary screen in iTunes, it only converts when adding to the iPhone.
Your library is not changed at all.

  • Question about converting trial to full version.

    Hi there,
    I have 2 questions:
    1.
Currently I am using Framemaker 7.2 trial version. I have the licence code for Framemaker 7.2. I found out from the Adobe website (http://www.adobe.com/support/service/trial.html) that I need to Activate the trial product for it to be converted to a full version but I do not see any Activation button when I opened the trial version. How do I convert from trial to full?
    2.
After Step 1 above is done, how do I upgrade version 7.2 to version 8?
    Thank you.

You cannot purchase FrameMaker 7.2 anymore, you can buy FrameMaker 8 from Adobe Store.

  • Question about converting my RAW files to DNG

I've shot with Nikon, Olympus, and Panasonic so I'm familiar with all their proprietary RAW formats that each uses. I'd like to convert all my RAW files to DNG and then use that on import into LR going forward. I noticed that the DNG files from the Panasonic or Olympus images don't display a thumbnail in my finder folders (Mac OS X) so I tried some experiments.
I used the "convert to DNG" function in LR for some RAW files from each of the 3 cameras. Only the images taken with the Nikon D5300 show a thumbnail image in my finder folder. The Oly and Panny shots only display the DNG icon. Next I used the "export to DNG" function thinking that might make the thumbnail available but it was just the same. I would like to be able to see the images in my finder folders and also be able to open them to view in "preview" but only the Nikon converted DNGs will open in preview and not the Panny or Oly DNGs. Am I doing something wrong in the preferences? I've attached a screen shot of my preferences settings for DNG in LR and the thumbs that I'm seeing in my finder folders.
These are the settings I have set in preferences in LR
This is my Nikon NEF image converted to DNG    and my Panasonic RAW image converted to DNG (same thing happens with Olympus ORF files)

I probably missed this detail in what you’ve posted, but do you see the thumbnails of the three cameras’ raw files in Finder if you don’t convert to DNG?
What has happened in the past is that the Apple raw interpreter doesn’t read thumbnails of DNGs it doesn’t like, where at least one thing it didn’t used to like was embedded lens corrections for mirrorless cameras.  Are the Olympus and Panasonic mirrorless—meaning there is no optical viewfinder and everything is seen on an LCD screen or perhaps an electronic view finder?  If so the reason these are different is that the camera is doing the lens distortion corrections automatically and this information is stored in the raw files and in the DNGs but Apple doesn’t know how to use these embedded lens corrections or doesn’t know how to read the newer DNG spec that does allow for this information to be embedded in the DNG, at least.
Apple could just extract the embedded jpg preview and ignore the other parts of the file it doesn’t understand, but it apparently doesn’t do this.
What I’m not sure about is if the Apple raw interpreter still has this problem or if you’re on an older system without the latest updates for camera raw decoding by Apple.

  • Question about converting a mac formatted ipod w/ the restore icon to pc

    Hey Guys.
    Here's a question w/ some background.
I bought an IPOD about 6 months ago and connected it to my MAC at work...where I uploaded music and etc...
I've changed jobs...have a PC at home and at my new job. Earlyer today my IPOD came up with the restore icon, and I'm thinking since I have to reinstall everything anyways...I wanna format it to PC as well as restore it so I start from scratch with my ipod blank and my home computer.
    How should I proceed?
Do I restore with a mac, then bring it to my pc? Let me know what to do.
    Thanks doodz.

I too am trying to do what Say Word is, BUT, even though I have done EVERYTHING on the list, the PC still won't recognize the ipod. The article covering "Windows PC doesn't recognize iPod" states: "You cannot use iPod for Mac with a Windows PC". So my question is -- how will I ever get the PC (using USB) to recognize a Mac formated iPod. HELP Puleeese!

  • 4 Gb Zen not 4 Gb? (and another question about converting vide

    Hi all,
I purchased a 4 Gb zen yesterday and noticed that it lists the amount of free space at around 3.6 or 3.7 GB...is this normal? Is the missing space used for operating system and such? I know it comes with some pre-installed videos and songs but I don't think they added up to 300-400 mbs of stuff.
Also when I try to use the converter that it comes with to convert my DIVX and even AVI files, the converter enounters and error and says something like "the media you selected is not compatable with your player)....What am I doing wrong? Is there a different tool I should be using to convert files? I would like to load up some movies/tv shows on to the player.
    Thanks.

There are actually several lawsuits about this, including with Creative and with the fruit company.
Many companies now define a gigabyte to be ,000,000,000 bytes, rather than the correct computing value of ,073,74,824 bytes. So if you're about 7% short of your expectations, this is probably the reason.
The lawsuits tend to be about whether or not the company warned you sufficiently that they were using the less accepted definition of Gb in order to decrease the memory they actually put in their players.

  • Question about converting video to jpeg and back to video

Is it possible to import a digital video sequence into photoshop and convert it into individual frames, so that each frame can be manipulated individually (drawn into, coloured etc) and then reform the individual frames into a video file for export toAfter Effects, Premier Pro or Avid?
    [email protected]
    http://www.artalis.co.uk

    Hi,
I do not know Photoshop very well, but I know that you can import your video into After Effects, then export out an image sequence from there - TGA or other "Lossless" codecs. Then you would have individual frames to work on. Once done, you could use Media Encoder to get a good quality export from the individual images back to video.

  • A question about the digital outputs on my sound card

I have a Sound Blaster PCI Express XiFi Extreme Audio soundcard (the blue colored one) and I'm wondering whether it's digital output is a coaxial or optical connector?

Okay, I have determined that it is an optical output. What I want to know now is how I can convert that to a stereo output.

  • Question about converting to Quicktime: "Searching for movie data"

    Hi All -
I converted several clips on FCP to Quicktime files onto my MacBook Pro. They play just fine. However, when I send these files to someone else or try to play them when my external hard drive is disconnected from my MacBook, I get the following message: "Searching for movie data in file sequence Sequence1-FIN-0000006".
The sequence number changes from one movie to the next, of course. Either way, the QT file will not play unless my external hard drive is connected to my laptop.
Why is this? Am I converting wrong? I'm using the top Convert to Quicktime when exporting the footage.
Any insight would be very helpful.
    Thanks!!

Don't mean to disagree David, but that's not it.  What was exported were REFERENCE QT files...not SELF CONTAINED.  Meaning that smaller files were made that reference the media on the Capture Scratch.  They will work fine on your system, as the media being referenced is there.  When someone else tries to open them, they get that error, because they don't have the media being referenced.
When you export QT Movies, you need to check the SELF CONTAINED box.
