Question about Disc Cleanup?

I recently loaded about 45 songs onto my microphoto. I cannot find them in my player though. I have over 000 songs already and have not had this problem before. The songs are recognized through Windows Explorer, so I know they are on there. Would a disc cleanup help at all and does it do any damage to the songs that are on there already? I have current firmware installed. I think the WMP might have been an older version. Does that make a difference? Thanks for reading and any help you can offer!

coolguy2420,
Where are the files located folder wise on the player? Also, is there anything "different" about these files?
Cleanup will not damage any files, but if a file is already corrupted it may be removed. But then again, if it is corrupted the unit couldn't play it anyway so you are not really losing anything.

  • All that Disc Cleanup, disk Defragmenter on Windows. What about Mac?

    Hi guys
Im a new mac user, before that I used to have a PC and we all know that we have to do all these windows tasks such as disc cleanup, disk defragmenter, scan for viruses, etc. The question is, do we actually have to do stuffs like windows' does? I've been using my computer for about 10 weeks now and do not know what to do with my mac to maintain its performance. Are there any tasks that we as mac users have to do to keep our computer runs in perfect working order? I don't feel good with my computer because Im using it all day for surfing internet, watching DVDs, chatting and others but I don't know how to take care of it (other than cleaning it, calibrating the battery, etc). Thx in advance.

OSX is Unix based and it will take care of the hard disc management, virues aren't a concern unless you're using Boot Camp and running Windows (in which case it is vulnerable on that side). The ClamavX utility can be useful/set your mind at rest:

It's a good idea to run Applications/Utilities/Disc Utility before any new install or update and click the [Repair Permissions] button, otherwise you are risk and trouble free on Macs

It won't work. Dell only supplies recovery CDs. They have the hardware needed for the Dell and that's it. I would also guess that it does not have SP2 incorporated into it. You could mess up your Mac, but it would not install so why even bother with it?
You need the full XP with SP2 embedded or Vista CD or DVD. Anything less won't work.

  • A question about grub and USB

    Hi All
I have a quick question about grub and USB that I can't quite find the answer to by searching.   Most of the FAQs discuss booting a full linux dristribution from USB. My situation is this.  I am getting a new computer with two drives, the second will be arch and the first will be Vista (for my wife).  I want the computer to boot the same way that my wife's machine boots at work so I don't want to install grub on the MBR.  So, is there a way to have all of the grub config files and kernels installed on the second drive and simply install to grub boot loader to the MBR of a USB stick?  My goal would be to simply plug the USB stick into the new PC and boot arch from the second drive.
    Thanks

    i cant say for hp's
havent worked on any in a while
recent machines have been coupleof dell's , vaio & emachine
which dells do offer it at least the ones i tried , my laptop does(dell)
all home pc's are built by me which do offer to boot individual drives
what hp you getting it may tell in specs
are both discs sata? if so it might not offer this option with 2 drives of same interface
check your power supply alot of these preconfigured machines put cheap under reated power supplies in there
    & will burn your motherboard i just replaced PS(250 watt) & mobo(845gvsr) in an emachines <cheap stuff<
i hope you researched the pc before buying ie : mobo, power supply are the biggest concerns
i find it much more benificial to build my own machine gives me peace at mind. the cost is sometimes more in $ but not always , your biggest expense is time researching hardware
if you live in usa the best places to start looking are bensbargains.net & pricewatch.com
i am not affiliated with either & niether sell the hardware they are just advertisers a place to buy
for costomized machines that i would trust is unitedmicro.com theyll asemble & test before shipping
i have gotten 2 machines so far from them with NO PROBLEMS with hardware (knock knock)
you may want to consider this in your next venture for pc

  • Question about "Native ISO" and Color Grading in PP

I have a question about "Native ISO" in the real world and how it relates to color grading.  I was shooting 35mm film before all these digital cameras became flat-out amazing practically overnight.  Then the goal was always to shoot with the lowest ISO possible to achieve the least amount of grain (unless you were making an artistic decision to get that look).  If I was shooting outside plus had a nice lighting package I'd shoot 5201/50 ASA (Daylight) and 5212/100 ASA (Tungsten) 99 times out of 100.
I've recently been shooting a lot with the Blackmagic 4K and have read that its "Native ISO" is 400.  Because of my film background this seems counter-intuitive.  Yesterday I was shooting for a client and had the camera at an f16 with a 200 ISO.  Because of what I'd read, I was tempted stop down to an f22 and change my ISO to 400... but the "little film voice in my head" just wouldn't let me do it.  It kept telling me "Higher ISO means more noise... stay at 200 and you will get a cleaner image".
So how does it work with "Native ISO"?  Should I really shoot at a 400 ISO every chance I get in order to capture the best image for how the camera is calibrated?  Will it really give me more latitude when color grading?  Or would I still get a cleaner image staying at ISO 200?   I've Googled around quite, but haven't found any articles that answer specifically this question.  Would love to hear from someone who knows a bit more on the subject or has a link that could point me in the right direction.
    Thanks much.

Hey, shooter ... yea, interesting discussion and always nice to learn. Great pic, too!
    jamesp2 ...
Great answer. I've followed quite a bit of the discussion about the BM cams as well, one does feel a need to check out the possibilities for that next beastie one will need to acquire. But ... which one?
I've always been a bit of a hard-case about testing testing testing. For instance, what happens with dome down or use of a flat diffuser vs. dome in the up position in metering? Back in the film days, we had our own lab and did our own printing as well as the um ... difficult images ... from other studios. I needed to know how to get exactly the same diffuse highlight no matter whether it was a "standard" light 3:1 studio shot, or a near-profile with no fill that needs dark shadows. I tested & burned through boxes of medium-format polaroid & 120 film and a lot of color paper. Finding? To get the same print time no matter the contrast or lighting style, needed to be metered either with the flat disc (Minolta) or dome-down (Sekonic) and held at the highlight-location pointed at the main light source. I could meter and nail the exposure every time. Ahh no, insist so many ... one must have the dome on/up and pointed at the camera! Right. Do that, change the contrast, and see what happens to your diffuse forehead highlight on a densitometer ... and see how your printing exposure times change. Oh, and you've just moved your center-of-exposure up or down on the film's H&D curve, which will also change the way the shadows & highlights print. In truth, though it was subtle, we had realistically no matter latitude for a best-case image with pro neg film as one had with chromes. You could probably get away with being "off" easier, but it still wasn't dead-on.
So wading into video ... oi vey, you may have noticed the things claimed here there & everywhere ... this setting is God's Gift to Humanity but no, it's total crap ... this sensor is totally flawed but someone else is certain it's the finest piece out there. Yes, opinions will be all over ... but ... in film, it was the densitometer. In video, it's the scopes. Truth. And getting to that can be a right pain. I've seen quite a few contradictory comments about using the BM cams in film mode and also at ISO 200. Yours above gives the most ... comforting? ... explanation (for me) because of your reference to your scopes & the waveform patterns. Thank you.
    Love to learn ...

  • Question about IsCancelled

    Hi,
Has anyone used the TaskHandle.EnableSytemCancel attribute
with any success? When should this actually used? I want
to prevent the FORTE runtime from canceling me during
    critical sections of my code.
Basically, I'm trying to make sure that my database and
updates I'm doing performing on regular UNIX files are kept
    in sync.
Does anyone have any sample code that uses this attribute?
A second question is about the debugger? Is there any
indication, such as an exception or an event, to the
running TOOL code when the user presses the Cancel Task
menu item? I want to do some cleanup before exiting.
    -rick

I have used the EnableSystemCancel attribute in the case where I am
interfacing to an external C DLL and I need to leave the DLL in a known
state before I clean some stuff up when the task terminates. In my case,
the particular task is a queue service thread, so it's pretty easy to code
    this with a while loop.
    while not task.isCancelled do
    // task body is here
    end while;
    // task cleanup is here
As for your second question, I believe choosing the Cancel Task option from
the debugger is the same as calling MyTaskDesc.SetCancel() in TOOL code.
The on-line help for CancelException has a good example of how to trap and
    handle this.

  • Hi everybody, new to Mac, can anyone tell me please, do I need to do any maintainence? ie. Disc cleanups or a de-frag?

Hi everybody, new to Mac, can anyone tell me please, do I need to do any maintainence? ie. Disc cleanups or a de-frag?

den.thed is spot on in his assessment. The maintenance scripts run in the background, if you want to see when they were last run or to run them manually download and install the Maintidget Widget by clicking the link.
Also as far as malware and antivirus software, this is something you can also forget about with a Mac. OS X is incredibly secure and there are no viruses for OS X. Shocking but completely true. Using a little common sense such as never download from a site you are not familiar with or trust. If you get a popup telling you to download something then ignore it. Run Software Update at least once per month ( you will find it under the Apple Symbol in the upper left of your screen) and this will keep your system up-to-date.

  • I have three questions about managing my music library

    Hello,
I have three questions about managing my music library, I hope you can help me with them:
    1) Is there a limit of how many entries, songs, albums, art work, can iTunes handle? I have a hunch iTunes is like a database program and am curious about its capacity. I have two 2-TB drives and am wondering what is going to happen when I fill these two drives up. Other than disk space, what are iTunes limitations?
    2) Talking about these two drives. How can I use both as a source for my iTunes library. Can I have two folders selected as the source of my library? I am not sure if I have enough disk space to hold all my music, but I do also have a 1TB almost empty drive is need be.
    3) OK now comes te real question. I am sure that I have duplicates in my library and I sure would love to clean my library up.Possiby if I do get to clean it up, I can save some disk space and that is always a good thing. Any good techniques, software, techniques to follow while ripping music to help keep my library organized. Please be as detailed as you can.

As far as I know you're going to run out of disc space before you hit any limits. Each object in iTunes has a 64-bit key to access it. That said as your library grows it will get less responsive as bigger indexes take exponentially longer to process.
    2) Talking about these two drives. How can I use both as a source for my iTunes library. Can I have two folders selected as the source of my library? I am not sure if I have enough disk space to hold all my music, but I do also have a 1TB almost empty drive is need be.
iTunes wants to manage everything inside one big folder. Some idiosyncrasies with the way it manages things if you have to move to a new drive means it is best if you can stick to that plan. If your library grows larger then you'll have to take manual control of where some or all of your content is stored. I use a variation of a script called ConsolidateByMoving which you could adapt for your needs.

When it comes to deduping I've written another script for that called DeDuper, see this thread for background.

  • From USB to IEEE-1394: question about HD capture, editing, sharing.

I’m new to editing video but have a question about capturing video into Premiere Elements 7. I have been using a Canon HF11 which shoots only in HD and only has USB output to copy video to my desktop. I don’t have a Blu-ray burner yet but I have burned a few projects to DVD, shared video on YouTube, and saved files in .avi and .mpeg to view on computer screens. But obviously I’m missing out on sharing HD on disk at this time. I just bought a Canon XH A1s which shoots both HD and SD on miniDV tapes. And uses IEEE-1394 cable for capturing (to Pre7). I did a 3 minute test project in SD and burned it on a DVD disk. I was very pleased at the results and the ease of editing. I don’t have any HD tapes yet, but when I do what differences will I experience from shooting in HD and then capturing, editing, then to sharing? My current HD processes with the HF11 is slow, occasional low-resources warnings, and less then pleasing results on DVD disks. Thanks for any and all comments and/or suggestions.

Your HF11 is AVCHD format and the Canon XH A1 is HDV MPEG2. AVCHD takes a lot more computer horespower to edit compared to HDV MPEG2... main reason being that AVCHD is more highly compressed giving small file sizes. This is also why you get the low resource and memory alarms while editing.
To shoot HD you do not need HD miniDV tapes you can use the standard miniDV tapes. However the HD tapes are supposed to give fewer drop-outs than the standard tapes but are considerable more expensive. With DV-AVI a drop out would be hardly noticed, but as HDV MPEG2 is a compressed format and the picture relies on information in a number of frames any drop-outs can give a second or so of bad video. That said I have had very few issues with drop-outs. If you are doing a wedding or something important that you do not want to risk then probably better to use a HD miniDV tape.
In the past the advise has been to capture in high definition to get the best quality and then downconvert in the camcorder and capture in DV-AVI... the reason being that older versions of Premiere Elements did not do a good job of the down conversion. Reports on PE7 indicate it is better and that you could use a HDV workflow and burn to DVD as a last stage. This also allows you to export a high definition version of your video to view on a monitor where you can appreciate the higher resolution. Or in the future when you have a Blu-ray burner and player you can burn the file to disc... save doing all the editing all over.

  • Disc cleanup

New to Apple.  I have OS X Snow Leopard.  On my PC is was able to run both disc cleanup as well as defrag.  I cannot find similar programs on Snow Leopard.  I assume they are there but maybe under different name?  Is it possible they dont exist as in Snow Leopard no need to clean up and/or defrag?
    Thanks

I was under the impression, DW, which, fortunately, I've never had to purchase or use, was often effective -- numerous reports over the years here suggest -- at repairing directory corruption when Disk Utility failed.
    That's undoubtedly true.
A backup as clone might be suffering from the same directory corruption, so don't see how that eliminates the need for something like DW.
A backup would only have the same directory corruption as the original volume if you backed up by doing a block copy with asr(8) or a similar tool -- which would be absurd. A file copy doesn't transfer the volume directory, so the backup would not be corrupted. It might not have all the files that were on the original volume, but Disk Warrior can't do anything about that.
Can you please explain why you think DW is worthless.
I didn't say it was worthless. Clearly, it isn't. It's a specialized recovery tool that you'll never need if you have redundant backups.
Directory damage should be a very rare event with journaled HFS. In particular, it does not result from forcible unmounting of a volume, as in a system crash or a power failure. You often see people saying, "Oh, your system crashed, so you have to run Disk Utility (or Disk Warrior) to repair the disk." Wrong. When the volume is remounted, the journal is replayed and the directory is restored to a consistent state (possibly with some loss of data.) Directory damage can only happen as the result of an I/O error.
I have zero tolerance for unrecoverable I/O errors. If the errors are so bad as to result in irreparable damage to a volume directory, then the device should be replaced immediately. Disk Warrior is of no use in that situation. Even if you choose (unwisely) not to replace the drive, you should erase it and restore from backup. That method is faster, cheaper, and more reliable than trying to fix it with Disk Warrior, and unlike Disk Warrior, it always works and never loses any data.

  • [Zen Micro]Questions about the Firmw

    Hello,
I have some questions about the firmware of the Zen Micro
. Can I use the Zen Micro without any Software (MediaSource?) on my PC (winXP) when im using the Firmware Creative Zen Micro *PlaysForSure/MTP Firmware 2.00.2 ? This means that i copy my Music only by drag&drop from the Explorer after my Computer has detected the Zen Micro as a Removable Disk!
    2. I know that the Zen Micro has two parts with the Normal Firmware. The "Removable Disk" Part and the "Playable" Part which can only used by the Software! But what happens if my . question is right. How can i seperate this two parts?
    Thanks for answers

I don't have the 2.x firmware, but I think I'm correct in saying this :
with the 2.x firmware, your Micro becomes an MTP compatible device, which can be recognized on PCs having an MTP compatible OS (operating system). For the moment, the only OS that fits the bill to my knowledge, is Win XP with Windows Media Player 0. In this combination of MTP device + MTP OS, you don't need to install other drivers, and you can do drag and drop
BUT ! The 2.x firmware doesn't make your device a "removable disc" in the traditional sense of the word. It doesn't become a file system, like a USB memory stick.
I hope I was clear enough to see the difference :-)Message Edited by fred_be9300 on 04-03-2005 02:52 AM

  • Disc cleanup? Defragmentation?

Hello everyone, since I am very new to the mac universe I have a few basic probably stupid questions. Does the MBP have such a thing as a disc cleanup utility, like the PC, or a disc defragmentor? I have no idea how to manage or look at the stats of the hard drive, thanks.....

    Rafcio,
While there are a couple defragmentaion utilities, they are completely unecessary. The Mac file system (HFS+, also known as "Mac OS Extended") handles files in a way that minimizes fragmentation in all but extreme circumstances.
Most of us will end up formatting (erasing) any drive for one reason or another long before fragmentation becomes a concern.
Like any other file system, HFS+ is susceptible to disk errors. This is especially true if a machine is improperly shut down, such as when a forced shutdown or sudden loss of power occurs. For this reason, whenever a Mac is started or restarted, the startup disk is first scanned for errors. If any are found, an attempt is made to correct the problem. In later versions of OS X, startup disks are "journaled" by default, further safeguarding against disk erros caused by improper shutdowns.
In other words, there is not much you need to do. In almost all cases, everything works, and works well, or they don't and a format is necessary.
