Question about Disk Utility

I migrated my IMac I got back in May to Leopard and I was looking at the Disk Utility and noticed the Repair Disk option is the only one grayed out. Does this mean my hard drive needs a repair done on this? Tonight I got prompted to update my Keychains with a new update and rebooted. Is there a diagnostic mode where I can get this option? Do I have to put in the Mac OS X dvd in to get to a repair option?

You should never be without a 2nd "emergency" boot drive with current version of OS X, because Disk Utility does change. You can verify, but it isn't reliable.
You can also run repairs from Single User Mode (command S, follow the onscreen instructions at the prompt) to run FSCK -FY.
It is easy to use Leopard Cache Cleaner to do the above also. It would be nice to "schedule" the system to do a system check and repair on the next startup.
A lot of people don't trust Disk Utility and use Disk Warrior, there are errors that DU doesn't see, and doesn't fix. And you won't know if you don't have DW and an alternate boot drive.

Quick question about disk utility.

I have software mirror raid set up with Disk Utility. Although the one slice of the two as failed. The disk it's self has not failed just the slice. There appears to be a rebuild option, but would like to know if I click that button will it take the volume offline or will the data still be accessible while it rebuilds?

IIRC the data is still accessible but things slow down a bit.
Generally when a slice fails the drive can't be far behind. The firs thing I would do is make sure you have that RAID backed up.

When i boot i get a flashing folder with a question mark. disk utility doesnt work or read my harddrives to boot with. i installed a new SSD and its not reading that either. i have a macbook pro 2011, any help?

So I came to this problem a while ago. M ycomputer basically froze so I was forced to shut down by holding the button down. When I started it up I got the flashing folder with a question mark. I started it up holding down the command and r keys which brought me to disk utility. Although my computer doesn't read that I have a hard drive to start it up. When I click on the disk utility app, I cannot verify or repair anything either. The buttons won't allow me to click on them. It also shows "Mac OSX Base System" which shows I have files and what not saved. I had been told that I need a new hard drive so I bought and manually installed a OWC SSD 240GB drive and when i booted the computer up it booted up yo the operating system fine with all my files and what not on there. After about twenty minutes, it froze again. I forced a shut down, restarted and the same thing happened. I am not able to choose my SSD to boot up, although thats probably because it doesn't have an operating system installed on it??

any help would be great, I'm overall confused.

this isn’t Apple support; this is a user-to-user forum. We’re just fellow users of Apple products here.
If you want to boot from your SSD, then you should put the SSD where your HDD currently is, and put the HDD into the optical bay. (That setup will also get you the best performance.) At the moment, you’re still booting from your HDD. Note that you will need to format your SSD in Disk Utility [with the “Mac OS X Extended (Journaled)” format] so that you can install OS X onto it.
Since you have an Early 2011 model, it might or might not have originally come with grey installation DVDs. You will be able to find out whether it did or not by trying to use OS X Internet Recovery to install OS X onto your SSD. If it does not work, or if the installed OS turns out to be Snow Leopard, then it will have originally come with the DVDs, and you should purchase a replacement pair of DVDs from Apple or iFixit; those discs will have your MacBook Pro’s Apple Hardware Test and its iLife apps. If the installed OS turns out to be Lion, then it will not originally have come with the grey installation DVDs, and your Apple Hardware Test will be installed along with Lion, and your iLife apps will be downloadable from the Mac App Store.

Start-Up: Folder with gray question mark / Disk Utility: Invalid Sibling Link

Yesterday, I was working on my computer and it froze up. My only option was to reboot by holding down the power key. When the computer restarted, the screen was all grey with a folder in the middle of the screen with a question mark.
I tried the following:
1) Boot up computer while holding down the "Option" key. - Didn't work.
2) Boot up the computer while holding down the "Shift" key. - Didn't work.
Since the first two options didn't work I inserted the original system install disk and booted up while holding down the "C" key. I selected "English" as the language and then opened "Disk Utilities." I pressed "Repair disk" within First Aid. The message I am getting is as follows:
"First Aid failed. Disk Utility stopped repairing "Macintosh HD" because the following error was encountered: Filesystem verify or repair failed."
The details screen shows the following:
"Verify and repair volume "Macintosh HD"
Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
Checking Extents Overflow file.
Checking Catalog file.
Invalid sibling link.
Rebuilding Catalog B-tree.
The volume could not be repaired.
Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed."
I ran the "Repair disk" function about 6 times but it was not successful.
I was then going to try to do an "Archive and Install" from the original system disk but when I go to do that no destination options appear at the "Select Destination: Where do you want to install Mac OS X?"
I have not backed up my data very recently (and a lot of what I have stored on this computer is work - I am a freelance designer) so I would like to do something that at least allows me to transfer my data off of my hard drive before reformatting or anything like that. Of course, if there is a less intrusive fix that can leave my hard drive in tact, that would be ideal.
Any advice? Tips? Solutions? I have a MacBook Pro, 15" that I purchased 3 years ago (my 3 year Apple Care plan just expired about a month ago).

You are in a tough situation. The disk appears unusable according to Disk Utility. As was suggested you may (only may) be able to salvage it with Disk Warrior (not sure about Data Rescue). DW can sometimes recover a drive that DU can't. But nothing else can be suggested.
If you can get that disk recovered then back it up ASAP, wipe the disk, reinitialize it, and verify it. But I'm the paranoid type, and with the kind of errors you show for that disk, I am not sure I would ever trust it again. At most I would relegate it to a scratch disk.
Note, if it is a drive that you bought, most drives have a 3 to 5 year warrantee period, so you could get it replaced by the manufacturer if it is within that warrantee period.

Flashing Folder with Question Mark, Disk Utility Grayed Out

I was working on my macbook pro when it appeared to freeze, so I manually shut it down by pressing the power button. When I pressed it again to restart the computer, the restart "chime" sounded, and a flashing folder with a question mark appeared shortly after. The folder flashes for a few minutes, and the macbook turns off again. After consulting the internet, I restarted while holding command+r, and the computer told me to reconnect to the internet, select a language, and so on. When I reached the menu giving me choices for how to recover my information, I discovered that there were apparently no time machine backups recognized and when I tried to use the "first aid" option in Disk Utility, all of the action buttons are grayed out when I select the drives (I'm running OS X Mavericks) at the left, including the "Verify" option at the top. Is there anything I can do? I really would rather not restore a new version of OS X to preserve my information.

Thanks for the response. When I clicked on the option to reinstall, the window asking me to select the disk where I would like to install Mac OS X presents no options. There's just a blank white box with no other messages or prompts.

Question about Disk Image Backup/Restoring

Ok, so i have a weird Boot Camp error that requires reformatting of my whole drive. Now I have thought up a procedure that I think will work, let me know if this is a viable option:
1: Hook up a 320GB External Firewire Drive
2: Boot up using the 10.6 DVD
3: Go into Disk Utility
4: Make an image of the Macintosh HD and save it to the External Drive
5: Format the Macintosh HD
6: Restore the Macintosh HD using the Image
If i do this, will everything be hunky dory? Nothing is wrong with this? Thanks!

Copy the content of the external to the internal--into an appropriately named folder. Then, clone your internal to the external. I would just use DU. First, use DU to partition the external GUID--which also will format it OS X extended (journaled). You might want to make two partitions if you have room (see below). To clone, go to the restore tab; select your internal volume and drag it to the source box. Then, select your external and drag it to the destination box. Then, click restore. If you can't perform the operation without previously selecting erase distination, then select it; let DU erase again; and then click restore.
In an hour, more or less, you'll be ready to take care of your internal drive issue. Piece of cake. When you have fixed the internal, then just clone you Sno install on the external back to the internal. If you made two partitions, then copy the original external data to the second partition and remove it from your Sno installs if you want.

Question on Disk Utility Verify

I have a two-week old 27" iMac, 1 TB SSD, 32 GB RAM, 1 4 GB RAID-0 external G-Drive (external Max OS drive), 2 4 GB external G-Drives (1 used as partitioned backup (1 TB for Boot Camp, 3 TB for Time Machine), 1 planned for Windows external drive). I also bought and installed the Paragon NTFS and CampTune applications.
Have setup Boot Camp on the internal 1 TB SSD (127 GB partition) and finally got things to work, but, I am continually having issues with WIndows crashing (either in the middle of use, or during startup or shutdown with the KERNEL_SECURITY_CHECK_FAILURE. I have been Googling, and this seems associated with the use of external drives?
The last time I got this, I was unable to boot back into Mac partition, and ended up having to hold down the Option Key at boot, and select the right partition to boot from, I then started verifying all my drives and paritions with Disk Utility, and was finding and repairing various issues (everything seemed to repair fine) and also the Mac HD partition seemed to have Permissions issues, which seemed to repair fine.
But, in the process of doing this, am noticing an issue, or at least a difference between the Mac HD and and the External Mac-formatted Verify logs. The External drive ALWAYS tells me the drive is good, while the Mac HD has done that only once, and usually seems just to stop with "Checking Volume Information" as the last entry. Not sure this is an issue, or not, but was looking for ANY cause for the continual Windows issue.
Disk Utility Log Dumps are below, first the internal Mac HD (two partitions, Mac and Boot Camp, checking only the Mac partition), second the External G-Drive, formatted Mac RAID HD. Both times, I am selecting the drive partition below the actual physical HW.
The Boot Camp partition checks good.

Do a backup. Boot to the Recovery Volume (command - R on a restart or hold down the option key during a restart and select Recovery Volume). Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. See if the internal drive checks good.

About Disk Utility's secure erase options

Hello!
I am going to format the drive to reinstall the OS, it's time for a full cleaning!
I see that I have some options to erase the disk:
- Don't erase data
- Zero out data
- 7-Pass Erase
Is there any difference about the performance of the disk before the erase? I don't talk about the possibility or security of the erased data; I ask for the disk speed and smooth.

Question about Disk permissions in a Pro environment

As I struggle with instability and numerous application crashes in Leopard, I'm trying to exhaust all troubleshooting opportunities, wondering if maybe it's a disk permissions/access issue that's causing my problems.
I have two large SATA drives in an enclosure, in addition to two higher rpm internals, one for the system and apps exclusively, and the other as a dedicated scratch disk for Adobe products. I use the one large disk for document and job storage (literally everything I work on and save), and the other for TimeMachine backup. The permissions on the drives in the enclosure read:
Me - Read & Write
staff - Read & Write
everyone - Read only
and this is carried through the contents.
When I look at the drive that the SYSTEM is on, the permissions are set as follows, when I Get Info on the hard drive icon:
(unknown) - Read & Write
Me - Read & Write
(unknown) - Read only
everyone - Read only
I guess first off, I don't understand what the purpose of two different dual (unknown) users is, each set to different permissions. But that's the way it seemed to install, and after several permissions repairs on the disk.
The next question is, on the hard drives, does this (unknown) user, or its double, need to be set up with some kind of permission? Since I'm working with various applications, particularly Adobe CS3, I wonder if as I'm working, the apps need to call for some special access to my files that they're not getting. Could that be why I'm crashing?
And yet, I've repaired permissions on those volumes too.

Question about java.util.date

hello all. could anyone please help me or give me some input about a small problem i have run in to. okay, im writing a program that will read in 3 different text files and have them sorted into array lists. well i am working on the 3 main class definitions and i have run into a problem. the first 2 classes i just created strings and then ran a equals and a compareTo on them to determine which entry would be first alphabetically when it is entered into the database. well on the last class.. i wanted to do the same thing (create 2 strings and compare them that way).. but i have a java.util.date variable that i am dealing with. is it okay to read in the date into a string like i have been doing? or do i need to do something else.. i am posting the code below so please have a look and get back to me. thanks in advance!

Q: How to properly shutdown part/all of VDI? and question about disk space

Hi again. I was able to get the VDI to work, but yesterday I changed the ARC parameter both in the storage and the xvm server (not sure in which is needed to be changed) and restarted both machines, to my surprise, the templates and the cloned VM had disappeared, so I was wondering if there is a proper way to shut down parts or the whole VDI? is there a sequence? and, of course, how to then turn everything back online ...
How to make things permanent or at least, to export them so one can then import them back after the reboot?
I did not find this in the documentation, the vdi3.pdf, if it is somewhere else, plz provide me with the link.

I was curious that I could not see the space being used in the storage server:

but acording to the VDI page, the storage is being used at 3%:

Usage:3%
how to check this? where is the space being used?

If your database is the same version of mySQL on the MAMP as
on the server,
then you should be able to just export it from one and import
it to the
other. If not, you could try doing something similar to what

I'm not sure, but I think you might wind up having to make
some adjustments
to it. For instance, is the user name and password identical
on your server
and your MAMP installation? If not, you'll have to edit some

connection data.

This may well be because the type of person who writes these
guides is
unlikely to be using the automatically generated scripts.

Question about Disk Permissions Warming

While doing the monthly repairing disk permissions on my mac book pro I saw the following:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/...Contents/MacOS/ARDAgent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Quite honestly I never read what is in the text box when I do these monthly repairs, but this time I noticed the Warning and thought I should ask if anyone has seen this before. Is it something I need to have checked out? Thanks.

1. That message isn't a cause for concern.
2. Repairing disk permissions monthly is a waste of time. It should only be done as a troubleshooting step.

Questions about OutLineLoad utility (metadata)

Hi!
I need to check out whether it matters if csv load file has column header like " Plan1" or should it be like "Plan Type (Plan1)". Another example could be "Aggregation Plan1" vs "Aggregation (Plan1)"?
Do this kind of things reject metadata loading to a custom defined dimension like "Product"?
Does the location of OutLineLoad utility matter when running the utility from the command prompt? Usually the OutlineLoad utility can be found in the Planning/bin folder, but in this case the utility is stored into other folder in Planning server (version 11.1.2 ??/quite new version).
When trying to run the utility I ran into error message like:
“Unable to obtain dimension information and/or perform a data load: java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: oracle/dms/context/ExecutionContext”
Any idea what does this mean? Is it due to csv file column header errors or does it refer to something else?

The column header should be "Plan Type (Plan1)" and "Aggregation (Plan1)"
What I suggest is starting out with a simple load file maybe with just Parent and member e.g. Parent,Account
And then one record of data.
A example of the location to run the utility from is :- <MIDDLEWARE_HOME>\user_projects\epmsystem1\Planning\planning1

Repair Permission with Disk Utility in Snow Leopard?

After upgrading to SL, tried to do a repair permission with disk utility (a few times) & i got this "Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreS...as been modified and will not be repaired." ....is this normal????

A quick question about Disk Utility with Snow Leopard .. I can't make the Password dialog come up when I open a .sparseimage that is Password protected. I tried to make a new one from scratch and the same result.
Any suggestions?

Disk Utility, common terminology question?

I'm reading a guide on learning how to use Disk Utility. It says several times Disk Utility can erase and format a disk. I thought the 2 meant the same thing? I thought format meant to completely erase everything...Everything I read about disk utility they use these two words like they both do something different to the disk? Is there a difference?
