Question about Dolby Digital 5.1 in Soundtrack Pro 3

Hi folks,
I am pretty confused in regards to using Soundtrack Pro 3 to create and export a AC-3 dolby digital 5.1 file to be used in burning a Blu Ray DVD using Toast Titanium 11. I admit that overall I am somewhat Final Cut Studio savy but for the life of me I cannot find reliable and understandable tutorials re: the dolby digital thing. I am hoping that there are people out there who will be patient with my admitted ignorance
So, what I am working on?
107 minute feature documentary film edited using FCP 7 with 65 tracks of audio mixed down (using STP3) to six (1 & 2 dedicated to Voice, 3 & 4 dedicated to sfx and ambient sounds, 5 & 6 dedicated to music.)
What do I want to do?
My film is going be to be screened at a festival next month and so I want to burn a blu ray disc (using Toast Titanium 11) with AC-3 Dolby digital 5.1 audio as apposed to 2 channel stereo.
What I don't understand?
I'm not entirely sure how the Dolby 5.1 export using STP3 works. My questions are:
Will it take a 2 channel stereo final mix and convert and export it so that it will be a Dolby Digital? If so, what about the 6 channels of audio that I mentioned before. Is it better to mix those 6 down to 2 before doing the  Dolby 5.1 export?
If so, what if the theatre equipment (or any home dvd player) is not able to play Dolby 5.1? Will it then play the Blu Ray in 2 channel stereo or will there be issues?
Is there a 'standard' Dolby Digital setup when having to choose the 'Audio Coding Mode?'
And/or:
What settings would you suggest for very high quality Blu Ray export?
Anyways, I know there is a helluva lot of questions there but I obviously wanna get this right. Huge thanks in advance to any advice/suggestions you can give.
Cheers!

HI,
briefly from what comes to mind is;
your tracks need to be assigned via the Surround Sound Panner options, either or both in the tracks and submixes.  Read about Surround Sound in Soundtrack Pro and also the effect options via the sound design reverberation. (The latter can create surround from a stereo submix as well )
The next chapter is the export option.  FILE>EXPORT
The master can be optionally exported in Dolby surround AC-3 with a number of options you need to set in this window.
Then burning is the next chapter. I trust Toast can manage but have not tried yet.
When burning to Blue Ray one actually should use full resolution PCM files  WAV format for highest quality
Audio Surround Sound. The Export then would need to be uncompressed from your final STP mix in single mono files (which is an option in STP ) and then imported into a special burning program.....
THese are my 2 cents in general.

  • Question for Dolby Digital and

Hello. I have a SoundBlaster Platinum soundcard,DDTS-00 Decoder and GigaWorks S750 speakers and I have a problem when seeing movies from my PC.When I use the speakers with Playstation2 with optical cable when the movie has Dolby Digital or DTS sound the option on the decoder turns on that shows the sound mode. When I'm using the speakers with PC and I connect them with coaxial or optical cable and I choose from the sound menu of the DVD program (Cyberlink DVD)what sound I want the option on sound mode of the Creative decoder doen't change. What is going on?Could you tell me what to do?I think that I hear Dolby Surround and not Dolby Digital Neo:6 and DTS:ES. Thank you.Message Edited by pangef on 07-8-2006 06:38 AM

With your PC, set it up to S/PDIF. This way it by passed all software decoding and leaves it to your speakers .
IMHO, if people have speakers that can decode DD 5./DTS then use S/PDIF all the way
I have tested useing software decoders and then using S/PDIF pass through and found the sound is better via S/PDIF.
    Hope that hel

  • Another question about DTS Digital output on

I have a xfi fatality and the sound is amazing, but when I use bitstream digital out to listen to a dts cd, the external receiver plays the dts signal really distorted, I can hear the song but it's pretty much like a bad fm radio tune, it's really distorted. I can listen to mp3 in dolby digital 2 channels or stereo (if I select 96hz instead of 48hz output) but I can't simply listen to dts audio. I'm using windvd 7 to play the cds with the spdif enabled (that's the distorted sound option) or with it disabled (that's when the sound "goes" to the receiver as simply as pcm 2ch dolby). I also have the analog plugs connected to the receiver, but the digital sound quality is much better. So after reading many threads I don't know what I'm doing worng. Any ideas?

    Hi-
There shouldn't be any problem accessing the files. Even running applications from the other drive is possible.
Personally, I would dedicate a portion of the drive to the OS and applications, and keep files on a larger, separate partition.
Regarding the Leopard partition, allow enough room for the OS and applications, plus an additional 30GB or more for virtual memory use.

  • Question about the digital adapter

    Hi-
Fios just came to town and we have a Tivo HD so cable cards there, so that's what we'll order.  We also have an old analog TV in the bedroom with one of the government subsidized $40 converter boxes on it so we can watch OTA TV.  My question is- do I need to order the digital adapter as well, or can the FIOS coax go through the $40 converter box?  Just to watch local or basic- I know we won't get HD or premium.  Just need something to watch while we fall asleep....
Next question- I've read this forum and seems to be problems ordering initial service WITHOUT ordering a STB as well.  Is that still the case?
    Thanks all!

Fios won't work with the government box, those are for OTA only. If you want to watch Fios channels, you'll need the digital adapter or another one of their boxes.

  • A question about the digital outputs on my sound card

I have a Sound Blaster PCI Express XiFi Extreme Audio soundcard (the blue colored one) and I'm wondering whether it's digital output is a coaxial or optical connector?

Okay, I have determined that it is an optical output. What I want to know now is how I can convert that to a stereo output.

  • Question about RADIUS server configuration with a MacBook Pro

    Hello,
I own a modem router which is capable of WPA2 Enterprise and I want to use it with a RADIUS server for authentication and security purposes.
However, I have a few doubts about this.
    MY CONFIGURATION:
The modem router would be connected to a fixed PC with Windows and to a MacBook Pro (both with Ethernet)
The RADIUS server would be running on the MacBook Pro (freeRADIUS)
The bold is the issue, that comes when I disconnect the MBP (it's a notebook, so I use it disconnected from the router sometimes).
Supposing the router would have recognized it (correct configuration), it would disconnect from it.
    My questions:
Would Wi-Fi be lost in this manner? Or would the modem router automatically switch to another Wi-Fi authentication?
If I reconnected the MBP to the modem router and re-run the RADIUS server, would I need to access the control panel and re-configure the WPA2 Enterprise in order for Wi-Fi to work again?
    Thanks in advance,

"Full HD 3DD camcorder..." Marketing at it's best.
This is HDV, right? HDV has the same data rate as DV...13.6GB/hour. But because of the MPEG-2 Long GOP format the HDV format employs, it can be a bit tough to edit, but mainly when rendering effects. IT will be slower than DV, and you can't monitor thru the camera like you can with DV, but a simple FW400 drive and Intel Mac will be fine. Better if you can convert to ProRes upon ingest, but then that eats up a LOT more space and requires at least FW800...

  • Questions about Novation Remote 25SL integration with Logic Pro 8

Preface: I have to apologize in advance if this seems somewhat confusing. I'm sure some of the terms I'm using are just plain wrong - I'm somewhat of a n00b.
I have a Novation Remote 25SL configured to use AutoMap with Logic Pro 8 from Novation's website and most things are working well. It's confusing at times because sometimes I find it hard to tell what mode the keyboard is in, but that's ok - it's the least of my worries. Based on what I've seen through reading the manuals and my own experimentation, I have a couple of questions:
    - Despite what the guy at the store told me, I can't seem to figure out how to select different kits from within the SL. For example, if I have a garageband instrument selected on a track - can I use the data/select knob on the SL as it is now, or do I have to program that somewhere, somehow? Or if I have Ultrabeat on a track, can I use the knob to select the different kits/banks?
    - Is there a way to control non-Apple AU plugins like the rest of those which ship with Logic? All the sexy looking ones like Ringshifter, Compressor, Overdrive, etc. It seems odd that Remote will go into Mixer Automap mode and be able to control the certain portions of the instruments, but not the plugins that are automatically loaded into the channel strip when the instrument is loaded.
    - I have a 25 key Remote. In Ultrabeat, I find the key maps miss a chunk of notes between where the drum pads end and where the keyboard starts (or vice-verse). Is there a way to get it so each key has a mapping? 25 keys in Ultrabeat, 25 keys on the board plus 8 drum pads - seems like there's lots of room.
Thanks in advance for all your feedback.

    Follow-up research:
Apparently there is a driver conflict between the AlphaTrack and the ReMOTE. So far I have got the ReMOTE working - sort of - in Logic using the following method which was published at Novation's Answerbase:
    1. disconnect the alphatrack.
    2. launch Logic and then turn on the ReMOTE SL.
    3. Go into the Environment window, and add a Monitor Object. Connect it to the Remote SL's ports 2 and 3.
So far, this seems to at least get MIDI note input into Logic, but the Automap function seems a bit sketchy so far. This will depend on Novation updating Automap and the SL's firmware for Logic 8.
As noted previously, there doesn't seem to be any AlphaTrack support in Logic 8 yet and it's up to Apple to make it work. They do support their TranzPort product, so with luck there'll be support in the next update.
I'd really love to use BOTH control surfaces with Logic simultaneously -- the AlphaTrack with the Mixer and plugins, the ReMOTE with Software Instruments. I suppose it might take some interesting mapping but this doesn't seem like that strange a setup -- there are plenty of "mixer surfaces" like the M-Audio one, and the Novation Automap stuff is quite popular....

  • Question about Final Cut Studio 3/Final Cut Pro 7

Last year I bought Final Cut Studio 2 and got a student discount.
I was thinking about upgrading to Final Cut Studio 3, but I saw a post that said you can't upgrade if you have the academic version. First of all, is this true, and secondly how can I tell if I have the academic version?
If I can't upgrade, I can't afford to buy the whole package again. And surely I should have been informed of this! But can I edit a project on Final Cut Pro 6 and then work on it on Final Cut Studio 7, and back again? I presume not, but it's worth asking because I'm pretty much screwed if not and I can't get the upgrade.
    Thanks

I want to upgrade because the macs at uni have upgraded, and I don't live near the uni I attend so it isn't practical for me to stay in their edit suites till late like everybody else does. I only bought the mac and final cut studio last year for this reason! So I prefer to edit from 2 machines: Mine, when I can, and the ones at uni when I'm collaborating with the 'crew'.
However, I cannot see academic version written anywhere. And I know this is going to make me sound even more stupid than I already do, but I can't remember if I got the student discount on Final Cut, or whether it was just on the mac. Does anyone know where I should be looking. I've checked the 'about final cut pro' details and looked through the packaging (and my emails for the receipt) but I cannot see anything.
    Thanks

  • Questions about installing SSD on my 2010 Macbook Pro

    Hey there.
    I have a Macbook Pro 2010. 15 inches and 2.4 GHz.
I was planning to upgrade only the memory from 4gb to 8, but realized that while I was at it, I might as well upgrade the hdd to an ssd as well.
I've lurked around the internet on how to install and set up a solid state drive onto my mbp, and I got the installation part alright (open back, T6 screwdriver, etc etc).
I'm concerned more about the set up - the process after in which I install my ssd, and installing the OSX - I have not yet found a site with solid step - by - step instructions into doing this.
Cloning? TRIM? I am getting very confused, and mildly frustrated.
So basically, after I physically install my SSD (which will be a Samsung 840 by the way), screw the bottom lid back on, then what?
Just in case this helps: I have the official cd for the Snow Leopard, as well as the application dvd and ilife. A lot of people are saying something like install Lion via internet or a purchased usb. Can i simply just install my snow leopard by the cd, and then upgrade it to lion after?
And I know that the 2010 mbp does not support SATA3. Im buying it simply for future upgrades.
    Thanks for reading my post.

Let's see if I can help...
You already are aware that you can't have SATA III speeds, but you're already ahead of me on that one - I always suggest anticipating for future needs.
You've already made your choice of drive (and size, I'm guessing) and you know that you'll need a Phillips #00 and a Torx T6 screwdriver. I'm assuming that you've watched plenty of videos...
...so now, how to get everything working? What I would do is to buy an inexpensive USB enclosure for your old drive, install the new SSD and boot from the old drive, use Disk Utility from the old drive to format the SSD as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" with a single GUID partition, and then use Carbon Copy Cloner (free for 30 days) to clone your old drive to your new drive (this is assuming that your SSD has similar space as your old HD?).
    It's a simple procedure - pretty simply outlined here -> https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4122.
The only uh-oh is if you have far more data on your HD than space available on your new SSD. That presents a new challenge. Write back if my method won't work because of space issues.
Oh, and I use Trim Enabler to enable TRIM on my SSD - the only drawback is that every time there's a .1 update to OS X, you must run it again and restart.

  • Digital Juice SFX Versus Soundtrack Pro

Can anyone tell me which is better and why?

They're two different things alltogether. The DJ fx are simply sound effects and musical stings and voice samples. Sound track pro is an audio application that happens to have some samples included.

  • Question for P6N SLI Platinum User : Does ALC888 support Dolby Digital Encoding?

Hello to all P6N SLI Platinum users here,
I have one question regarding Dolby Digital Encoding support on this motherboard. By default, ALC888 does not support Dolby Digital Encoding. But I am still curious. Can you please check on your motherboard, does it support Dolby Digital encoding or DTS Live Connect output to SPDIF? (You may check it by Realtek HD Audio Manager control panel. If there exist such setting option, it means it does support.)
The reason I ask this is I am thinking to switch from 975X Platinum to this board, I am unable to try this myself here as it requires me to reinstall my OS in order to load to WinXP
    Thanks in advance.

    have a look here:

according to info there its support Dolby Digital Live

  • Installing Soundtrack Pro audio content

Hi. I am about to install the version of Soundtrack Pro that comes w/ Final Cut Studio 2 and would like to install the audio content that comes on the three DVDs onto a secondary internal drive, the same drive where I store my video media files. Now, I also have audio content from Soundtrack v1.5 (that came w/ FCE 3.5) installed on my boot drive. Are all these files duplicated within the new audio content that comes w/ Soundtrack Pro that I am about to install? If not, will I be able to access both libraries of audio content once I have Soundtrack Pro installed, even though the two libraries will reside on different drives? And when I install the new audio content onto the secondary drive, where is the best location to keep the files? On what level of the drive and what should I name the folder? Thanks for your consideration.

Most of the content should be about the same. The big came change between versions two and three. And that change was in the use of Apple CAF files. That stands for compressed audio file, from what I understand.
If you search this forum you'll find that this topic came up several times. This extensive documentation on how to force soundtrack Pro to access sound effects libraries on external drives, or on different directories on your primary hard drive. easy way to deal with it right now is to simply move your existing libraries onto a directory on an external drive. Installed the new files. Then move them where you'd like them. Then tell soundtrack Pro would access everything. If it were me, I would just install the new files and not worry about the old ones. Duplicates will be overwritten and non-duplicates will be preserved. You can then move whatever files you want anywhere you want and then tell soundtrack Pro were to find them.
