I am a new user of Adobe Dreamweaver CS3 and I was wondering
if it is possible to create a website where people can leave
comments directly on the site. If this is possible, how is it
done?

Question about Lego Mindstorms Capabilities

Hello, thank you for reading my question!
I am currently working on the creation of a teleoperated robotics lab. for a introductory robotics course. I wish to allow students to control a labyrinth-solver robot via Labview, with the Lego NXT toolbox. A computer server will be connected to the Lego via Bluetooth, and the student communicates with the server via a web browser VI (a web published VI). I am interested on the Lego Mindstorm platform but I wanted to ask some questions about its software capabilities:
*Is it posible via a web VI interface for the student to load a program onto the Lego Mindstorm? My idea is to allow the student to load a VI (or the equivalent of a LEGO NXT ".exe")onto the server, and the server to load the program to the Lego. The Web VI already has some parameters the student can change a simple program execution (see [1]), but I also wanted to give the student the chance of loading their own program for more complicated algorithms.

Question on Dreamweaver CS3 book

I'm on page 339 of the Essential Guide To Dreamweaver CS3 and come across "Installing the PHP snippets collection" with the first point winding up by saying "If Dreamweaver is closed, Launch Adobe Extension Manager CS3 By going to "Finder>Applications (MAC)"
When I go to the Finder menu there is no sub-menu called Applications. Should I simply open the hard drive and go to the Applications folder to access the Extensions manager?
I'm fairly Mac-savvy but have not used the extensions manager since OS 9.2.2. I'm running OSX Tiger at this time.

To LRK, the book mentions first that the extensions manager can be accessed from within Dreamweaver but that Dreamweaver will have to be restarted for the change to take effect. I was interested in installing the PHP snippets collection in the way the book says is possible from the Mac Finder > Applications because I was not aware of how that worked. In the finder there is a menu item above called 'Finder' but the pull-down menu from there does not contain 'Applications' so I assumed next that the book meant that from the finder I needed to access the Applications folder. Now I have searched there, both in the Utilities folder, and in the Dreamweaver folder and there is nothing that says Extensions Manager as I remember from OS 9.2.2. I didn't even think OSX had an extensions manager. I wanted to learn something new about the Mac I was not aware of about OSX.
To David, Thank you for your gracious patience with me on this, but as you can read above, I am stuck at this point.
Hopefully, I will be able to go back through these threads and be a valuable contributor to the many questions that get asked about PHP and Dreamweaver. I'm in this for the long haul and would value your step by step instruction to me on how to access the Extensions Manager on the Mac from outside Dreamweaver without Dreamweaver running.

General questions about Dreamweaver

Hi,
I'm somewhat a newbie to web development (mostly do windows
application development) so I'm trying to determine the best tools
to acquire to learn and work in.
I have done a little in Visual studio with asp.net (2.0) so
I'm somewhat familiar with that tool. I was looking at taking some
online classes in web design and it appears most use dreamweaver as
the tool of choice.
So my question is can you do code behind like you can in asp?
In other words, can I write code on component events, like a button
click? Maybe it is better to ask what I can't do in DW?
I'll probably purchase DW cs3 version via the academic stores
(or Creative Web Suite).
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

.Net is rudimentary, but usable at some level. The rest are

Question about Dreamweaver Native Mobile Apps with PhoneGap

I am trying to determine the best way to build an app for my business. It doesn't need to be anything fancy, but needs a clean UI that is easy to navigate and interfaces with an online database. The PhoneGap intergration with Dreamweaver 5.5 seems really intriguing, but before I spend the $650 to upgrade my creative suite, I had some questions.
Doing some research, I have found multiple references to apps created in this way running slowly. Noticable lapses on button pushes, pages loading slowly, etc. Is this an issue and if it is, is there any way to get around it?
Idealy, I would deploy my app to both Android and iOS devices, how smoothly does that run? I have some basic knowledge of both Java and Objective-C, but using dreamweaver seems to be quite a timesaver.
If anyone has any input or comments about using Dreamweaver to create native mobile apps I would love to get some feedback. Thanks!

PhoneGap builds mobile apps with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. You cannot use a server-side language, such as PHP, with PhoneGap.
Presumably, you want to connect with a MySQL database on a remote server. To do so, you would need to use Ajax to send and receive data from the MySQL database. You can use jQuery to send and receive data as JSON. PHP has JSON functions that decode and encode data as JSON strings.
How difficult or easy you would find setting this up depends on your knowledge of jQuery and PHP. I don't know of any tutorials that show how to pull everything together for PhoneGap, but it shouldn't be too difficult to find tutorials for using jQuery Ajax to communicate with MySQL.

Question about AE CS3 swf output

I'm curious about something... I know that obviously using bitmap elements within a scene will not convert to vectors (so, for each bitmap you use in a scene, you lose out on the file size efficiency that vectors give you).
However, I'm confused and curious about what/how AE creates swf files from your scene.
Text, made in AE, will obviously convert fine (stay vectors)...
Beyond that, I'm not sure what things convert fine to the swf vectors, and what becomes bitmapped (or, for whatever reason, become detrimental to the efficiency of the swf file.
1) Could someone outline what does and doesn't maintain it's efficient vector format when converted to an swf in AE CS3?
2) What about illustrator files brought into AE? Are they treated the same as vectors created in Flash (keeping their vector form even when animated and the scene is exported as an swf)?
3) If I use a bitmapped background, but all foreground elements are vectors, does the swf just store the bg once (adds to the file size), but then has no other detrimental effect to the file size?
Any other words of wisdom on the subject would also be appreciated!

Under the right conditions - yes.

If the bg is a static image, it should.

A few questions about indesign CS3 scripting

1.     I often do one thing that pressing a Ctrl + ~, followed by a Ctrl + Shift + E. So I have spent one day trying to write a script today but failed to. I am going to be insane sooner or later.
I have tried this line "app.menus[0].menuElements[10].menuElements[1].shortcutKey" for "Ctrl + Shift + E". This line is the farthest point I can get. It doesn't work.
2.     if (app.menuActions.item (5262).name == "Stop BlackLining" || app.menuActions.item (5262).name == "Start BlackLining")
is not equal to
if (app.menuActions.item (5262).name == ("Stop BlackLining" || "Start BlackLining"))
why?
3.     I try this line "app.menuActions.item (5262).name" in ESTK. JavaScript Console reads "Start BlackLining".
When I select and click the menu "Start BlackLining", the menu's contents changes to "Stop BlackLining". See below.
Then I try the line refered above. JavaScript Console reads "Start BlackLining" again. As you can see, I consider that it should be "Stop BlackLining". The two different menus use the same index in Indesign.
But when I only click their parent menu "BlackLining" once and then try the line, JavaScript Console reads "Stop BlackLining". That's normal. But how come? Do I click their parent menu to refresh all the menus to make it normal?

That's a good reason not to use menu names or positions in scripts. Doesn't this blacklining extension (whatever it is) define a stopBlackLining() function somewhere in the DOM? BTW, "BlackLining" is a Plug-In. Is Plug-In equal to extension in English? And DOM is short for document object model? It seems there are a lot more for me to learn.
I want to tell you what kind of script I want to write. Make it simple. Forgiving my poor English.

I have to open many documents at the same time and then shut down the plug-in "BlackLining". So I have to press the shortcut "Ctrl+~", which means selecting the next document, and then press the shortcut "Ctrl+Shift+E", which is set by me and means starting or stopping the plug-in.

At the same time, I don't know whether the "BlackLining" is on or not. What if it's off? Maybe old documents are on, some subsequent are off. See below:

Question about Dreamweaver CS4 Preview in Browser

Good morning,
as a newcomer to Dreamweaver CS4, I find myself in a strange position: I managed to create several pages that work correctly, but whenever I transfer those pages in the server of the company I work for, they show up with a different format for the text parts, and the divs show up as shorter than they should be. And yet, I pretty much copy-and-pasted the original working html pages from my C to the server... why does this problem happen?

I can't really say without seeing your code. But some things that may cause issues:
- make sure your code is valid by running it through a validator: http://validator.w3.org/ and fixing any issues noted
- Some older versions of IE have a different way of handeling the box-model concept and this can cause sizing and layout issues. You can read all about it on the internet.
But I would focus on making sure your code is valid - most rendering issues are caused by invalid code like missing closing tags, improperly nested elements, etc.

- the first, how do you attac/.combine/,connect 2 webpages together, what tools do you use/
- the second, why is the site not working in the browser Internet Explorer. In firefox it is working very well.

Opinion: If you don't know how to do this basic requirement, then I'd suggestthat you don't open Dreamweaver until you have a basic understanding of HTML and css. If you don't know any html/css then using Dreamweaver is going to be an uphill struggle. Learn some basics and Dreamweaver will be easier to use.
To answer the above, you need to create a navigation bar with the menu items required Home / Services etc.
Highlight the Home button and create a link tot he home.html page (that you should have already created). You link to the page via the Property Inspector. Same for the next nav link. Select the Services Text and via the property inspector navigate to the services.html page (again that you should have already created).

Could be any number of issues. You need to upload the page to your hosting server and provide the link to this page. The answer will be in the code (hence the above opinion about learning html/css :-)

Questions About Office 365 Capabilities

I am exploring the possibility of putting our organization's Office on, "the cloud" using Office 365 Enterprise E2. I have some questions that are important. Any help will be appreciate.
1. I have developed extensive VBA "code behind" on Word files and Excel workbooks that do complex operations. For instance, I open our Outlook public folder shared contacts to do searches and populate forms and Excel cells.
I use NPOI calls to create downloadable Excel workbooks, etc. I use calls to SQL to access and query databases and return data. Is the VBA coding supported with Office 365? If so, what restrictions might there be over my current situation,
where Exchange and Office are hosted on our servers?
2. In general, what restrictions will I encounter with Exchange and Office being hosted by Microsoft, versus these tools being hosted on our servers?

Question about upgrading CS3

We have Adobe Creative Suite 3 and want to know if there is a way to update it so we can open and edit files from newer versions of Creative Suite, specifically InDesign and Photoshop. We keep getting missing plug in errors and such.

There is no upgrade path from CS3.
You can either buy the full version of CS6 if you want a permanent license, or because you own CS3, you can have the latest Creative Cloud Suite for $30/month.

"Layers" are so 1990s! The ability to easily create an absolutely positioned container (a layer) has been removed from all recent versions of DW simply because it's a troublesome technique to use for layout and usually causes more problems than it solves. Anyhow, a "layer" is just any page element that has been made absolutely positioned by your page's CSS. This means that even an image could be referred to as a layer, even though the image tag is not able to 'contain' anything. The way to make a "layer" in contemporary versions of DW would be to place a div on your page and style it to be absolutely positioned and located wherever you want it:
HTML
<div class="whatever">your desired text</div>
CSS
.whatever {
     position:absolute;
     left:200px;
     top:50px;
This CSS will place that div 50px from the top of the nearest positioned ancestor, and 200px from the left. If there is no positioned ancestor, then the div would be positioned from the top and left of the viewport (the browser window). So - insert the div, give it a class or an id value, and create your CSS using the CSS panel and the appropriate selector.

Question about Dreamweaver templates ( liquid vs fixed)

I am using DW CS5 and I used a template (two side bars header and footer for HTML liquid )when I upload the files to my site the side bars were not lined correctly but when I did live preveiw it looked great I dont know how to go about fixing this because in DW the bars look like that are position correctly in and out of live view How would I go about fixing this.

You should never rely just on DW live preview to see how pages are rendered(look). Sometimes it may look fine, other times it may look completely wrong. It also doesnt take into account how different browsers display your code. Always test your pages locally in a browser.

Some basic questions about Reports' chart capabilities

I'm currently surveying my options for a web based application that we are developing that requires reports with charts in HTML, PDF and Excel format.
As the application is being built around 9i DB and AS it would be great to take advantage of the functionality already available to us, but I wanted to clarify the following to determine if I need to also use any external packages to support my needs:
(1) With Oracle Reports, when charts are embedded in a PDF are they generated as bitmap or vector diagrams?
(2) I've searched around the OTN and couldn't find a complete list of the charts available within Reports - is such a list available anywhere? Are there any samples anywhere so I can get a feel of the "aesthetic" qualities of the output of Reports?
(3) Do charts support any image map or DHTML features (ie. mouseover to get textual display of numeric values).
(4) Does Reports support an Excel export capability. I don't mean a simple CSV dump of data - I mean a fully formatted Excel spreadsheet with charts, etc.

(1) With Oracle Reports, when charts are embedded in a PDF are they generated as bitmap or vector diagrams? With Oracle Reports 9i, Charts are generated as gif files during the generation of PDF files, but the gif files are deleted after the PDF is generated, they are embedded in the PDF file.
