Question about drop shadow size

Hi All!
I have created a style that only contains a custom drop shadow. I frequently apply this style to illustrations that I'm creating for a book.
However, since updating to CC 2014, I've been having a problem with the style. The size of the drop shadows is different on every illustration I apply it to. I originally set the style up to have a 7 px size, but now, when applied, sometimes the size is 22 px, sometimes 30 px, sometimes 5 px.
Can anyone tell me what is going on and how I can get the drop shadow size to remain constant each time I apply it?
Thanks in advance!

I believe if you create a layer style preset the Adobe store the resolution of the document that you were editing when you created the preset into the preset so Photoshop can scale the style effect to the resolution of the document you apply the layer style preset to.
Layer style setting as you know are in terms of absolute pixel.  That would mean the size of the shadow would vary on document that had different resolutions,   Notice in menu layers there is Layers>Layer Style>Scale Effects... and In the Image Size dialog(s) there is a check box Scale Styles or a setting Scale Styles..
If it working differently in CC version 15 then is was in CC version 14 they may be a new bug.
If you want a 7px drop shadow no matter what the documents resolution is you may be able to record an action that add a 7 PX drop shadow using the Layer Style dialog not using a preset style.
I  created  a Drop Shadow Preset on a 300 DPI Document distance 2 px size 7px.  I then recorded an action the applied that preset and then applied the same settings using the layer style dialog instead of the preset.  There is a great difference on how the two steps were recorded.
When I step through the action on a 300 DPI document the drop shadows looks the same.  On a 72DPI document the Preset drop shadow looks small like the 300dpi document however the step that was recorded with the Layer Style Dialog the layer drop shadow  looks much larger for it was not scaled down to match the  documents 72DPI resolution.
So it look like if you use a Layer style preset from the style palette the effect will be scaled for the documents DPI resolution.  Notice in the action there is a Layer Style Scale 100% in the step recorded using the layer style dialog.   Where the preset DS is applied some how by Photoshop and Photoshop scales the effect....

  • Question about drop shadow...

    Hi,
I need the drop shadow to still be visible around a cut out box shape.
Can anyone tell me how to achieve this effect? (Please see attached picture).
It may involve a compound clipping path but I'm not sure...
I would need detailed step by step instructions (especially because I don't even know what a compound clipping path is, or if i need one for this effect).
    Thanks, in advance!

I assume you are trying to create a placeholder image with a pre-assigned drop shadow.  I would create a shape and apply your drop shadow effects>stylize>drop shadow.
With the shape still selected, press shift+D twice or look at the bottom of your tools panel and change to the draw inside mode.  Place your image in that.
If that is not the effect you are looking for then you can create a faux drop shadow by doing the following:
    1. Create a box and fill it with your shadow color.
    2. With the box selected go to effects>blur>gaussian blur to create the drop shadow effect your want.
    3. Duplicate that same shape and place it above the first one, but slightly adjusted to recreate the drop shadow offset.
    5. Remove the blur effect in your appearance panel of the top object.
    4. Select both objects and in your pathfinder panel select the "minus front" button.
You should have a blurred backwards L shape.

  • Question about Domain file size...

I have a dot Mac account, and my iDisk capacity is 1 Gb.
As I regularly back-up my Domain file from my G5 iMac to a FW external drive that sits on my desk, I have just noticed that the file size is now just over 1 Gb.
Can someone please explain to me why I still have almost 700Mb left on my iDisk, yet my Domain file size is over 1 Gb?? Obviously, there must be 'internal' files that aren't copied to the iDisk.
    Thanks,
    Rachel.

Wow, that's quite a discrepancy. 1gb Domain vs. 300mb site? Well suffice it to say that the Domain file contains all the information that is needed to generate your site. But it makes me curious too why you have such a large discrepancy. Do you have a lot of video on your site?
My site is only about 50-60mb and my Domain is roughly the same size. When I first started using iWeb, I used to poke around inside the Domain file quite a bit more than I do now. You can open up your Domain file by Control-clicking it and selecting "Show Package Contents." At one point early on when I was blithely dragging and dropping stuff into iWeb and publishing just for experimentation, I noticed that even after I deleted images or EVEN WHOLE PAGES, that sometimes the Domain file would still contain images and quicktime movies left over from the deleted pages. I didn't know what was going on and actually tried to delete the "old" items from the Domain file, but I ended up with a non-functional Domain file...lots of error messages saying it was missing this and that. So I started over completely with a new Domain file. I also noticed at the time that my Domain file was several megabytes larger than my site.
Since then, I have been very careful only to drag items to iWeb that will actually be used. The Domain-to-site size ratio has stayed pretty much 1:1. So I chalked up my earlier experience as a fluke. I don't know. Maybe there is an inconsistency somewhere. In fact, do a search here on "Domain file optimizing" or "Domain file bloat" and you may be able to find my questions about the issue. I never did get any responses, though.

  • Drop shadow size reductions

    Problem:
Drop shadow applied to elements in a logo.
Logo gets scaled but the drop shadow distance does not.
    Solution:
Make the logo into a PDF and import that, then the shadow is scaled correctly.
Is there a completely within InDesign solution?
    Thanks,
    John

In the above the distances that do not scale are the X and Y coordinates. The overal size does scale.
    Thanks again

  • Question about book printing size

    Hello,
I am working on a book design. But I haven't decided on the book size yet. For now, there are two sizes that I may choose from. So I need to ask some one's opinion who has knowledge about offset printing.
One size is 295 x 250 mm Portrait size. This is a little bigger than the other.
The smaller size is 230 x 260 mm Landscape size.
We use ISO A-0 printing sheets.
The book will be about anywhere from 250 to 300 pages.
My main question is, will there be any price differences on these two sizes?
Some people say that anything a little bigger than A4 size is automatically calculated for A3 size, which is the double A4. These two sizes both are a little bigger than A4 and fits within A3 size.
If there is enough difference, I want to go for the smaller size. If I can set my mind on one size, it will save me a lot of work and confusion.
    Thanks.

I would think the size would be dependent on a few issues: genre, type of content, and the publisher to name a few.  You could minimize costs going with the smaller size obviously, but I, for one, cannot make a recommendation without getting more specific on the details.  Have you discussed the size with the publisher?

  • Question about Aperture library size

I am storing my photos on a secondary drive. However, my Aperture library is just as large as the original source folder even though I am not copying the images into the library.
Shouldn't the library be smaller since it only references the images from another location?

If you changed the size and quality of your preview settings, it's not enough to just "Update Previews". You will have to DELETE the old previews and generate new ones.
    (That's what my findings where)
To my understanding, previews are used
    - if you use the Aperture "Quick Previews" functionality
    - for synching with your e.g. iPhone
    - in the Media browser dialog of e.g. iWork applications
    (am I correct and complete?)
In my first days of Aperture 2 I increased the size to unlimited and the quality to 12, since "of course" I wanted to see the best possible quality of my pictures.
Now I learned that previews are not used in normal Aperture workflows, so I reduced the size to the lowest possible value of 1280 and the quality to 12.
This way I reduced the size of my library (30k JPEG photos, all referenced) from 108 GB to 33 GB.

  • Question about using mixed size disk groups with ASM

I support a 10g RAC cluster running 10.2.0.3 and using ASM. We currently have a data disk group that is 600 Gb in size, made up of 3 individual 200 Gb raw disk devices. The RAC cluster is running on an IBM pSeries server using AIX 5.3
I need to add more space, but the system adminstrator can only give me 100 Gb in the new raw device. What will be the impact, if any, of adding this smaller raw disk device into the same ASM data disk group? I understand that ASM tries to "balance" the overall usage of each raw device. Will ASM still work okay, or will it be constantly trying to rebalance the disk group because the one raw device is only half the size of the other three? Any help and advice given will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

  • Question about dropping frames during playback

Ok... granted my system hardware is a little outdated but... My system was running 1.5 without any problems... all I did was wipe the hard drive, reinstall the os, install CS4, install the drivers for my blackmagic SD card. But now when I render a project and try to play it back I getting drop frame errors all over the place. My video drives all check out runnning the blackmagic speed tests, I've made sure they are defragged and there is plenty of room... so the only thing I can think of is that there must be some setting in 4 that I am overlooking. I'm just shooting on DV and I chose blackmagic DV for my project settings (al playback is set to BM) and everything seems to be pointing to the video drive... any ideas what I might have missed? I've had a stable edit suite (well as stable as an edit suite can be) for so long I must be a little rusty at all those sneaky little settings.

Glad you got it sorted out, albeit with a reformat. I watched your thread, in hopes that someone could address your issue with another workaround.
As for the display (GUI and also media files), it does seem that CS4 is slower in some aspects, than earlier versions. However, with really top-line gear, most folk do not complain. I'm waiting to upgrade the workstation and the OS, before I upgrade to CS4 myself.

  • Yet another question about setting the size of a JTextField

    Hello,
yep, I already looked at the other posts & the API.
I have tried the following (& other code) to try to set the width of the display. Nothing works so far.
            percent_CO2 = new JTextField();
            percent_CO2.setColumns(8);
            percent_CO2.setToolTipText("The % Carbon Dioxide relates to ...");
            percent_CO2.setPreferredSize(new Dimension(10,20));
percent_CO2.setMaximumSize  (new Dimension(10,20));        This is one of several JTextField's on a Jpanel defined as :
    jcommonCharPanel.setLayout( new GridLayout(8, 2, 2, 4) );
//8 rows, 2 columns, vertical & horizontal gaps of 2 & 4Any ideas why it is so difficult to set the size of the JTextField?
Should I try to limit the size of the JPanel instead?
    thanks,

  • Drop Shadow on a box - correct size

I am new to Illustrator, and so apologise in advance if this is a daft question.
I need to produce a graphic for a website that is 950 x 120 pixels in size. The graphic is a rectangle box with a stroke outline. I then have a drop shadow on the box.
    A picture (not to scale):
My problem is that when I add the drop shadow, I do not know what size the graphic is as the bounding box is inside the area of the drop shadow.
I need the size to be precise.
I need the entire graphic, including the drop shadow, to be the size required of 950 x 120 pixels.
How can I get Illustrator to show the bounding box to be at the bottom of the drop shadow, rather than on the box stroke outline.
    Regards, Susan

Thank you very much for your prompt answer. I am very grateful.

  • Important conceptual question about Application Module, Maximum Pool Size

    Hello everyone,
We have a critical question about the Application Module default settings (taking the DB connections from a DataSource)
I know that on the Web it is generally suggested that each request must end with either a commit or rollback when executing PL/SQL blocks "directly" on the DB without the framework BC/ViewObject/Entity service intervention.
Now, for some reasons, we started to develop our applications with thinking that each Web Session would reference exactly one DB session (opened by any instance taken from the AM pool) for the whole duration of the session, so that the changes made by each Web session to its DB session would never interfere with the changes made by "other" Web Sessions to "other" DB sessions .
In other words, because of that convincement we often implemented sort of "transactions" that open and close (with either commit or rollback) each DB session not in/after a single HTTP request, but during many HTTP Requests.
As a concrete example think of this scenario:
    1. the user presses the "Insert" button. An HTTP request is fired. The action listener is executed and ends up with inserting rows in a table via a PL SQL block (not via the ViewObjects API).
    2. no commit or rollback after the above PL/SQL block is done yet.
    3. finally the user presses a "Commit" or "Rollback" button, firing the call to the appropriate AM methos.
Those three requests consist of what I called "transaction".
From the documentation it's clear that there is no guarantee that the couple AM istance + DB session is the same during all the requests.
This means that, during step 2, it's possible that another user might reference the same "pending" AM/DbSession for his needs and "steal" somehow the work done via PL/SQL after step 1. (This happens because sessions taken by the pool are always rolled back by default.)
    Now my question is:
Suppose we set the "Maximum Pool Size" parameter to very a great number (always inferior to the maximum number of concurrent users):
Is there any guarantee that all the requests will be isolated in that case?
I hope the problem is clear.
Let me know if you want more details.

    Thanks for the answers.
If I am right, from all your answers about resource avaiability, this means that even supposing the framework is able to always give us the same AM instance back from the AM pool (by following the session-affinity criterias), there is, however, no "connection affinity" with the connections from the DataSource. This means that the "same AM instance" might take the "a new DB connection", if necessary, from the connection pool of the DataSource. If that happens, that could give us the same problems as taking "a new AM instance" (that is, not following session-affinity) from the beginning, since each time an a new connection is taken (either via a new AM instance or via the same AM instance plus a new DB connection), the corresponding DB session is rolle back by default, clearing all the pending transactions we might have performed before with direct PL/SQL calls bypassing the AM services during the life cycle of our application, so that the new HTTP request will have a clean DB session to start to work with.
