Handbrake is nice because it will break them into chapters

  • Question about DVD quality from iDVD.....

I've just created my first DVD using iDVD (7.0.4), and I'm not happy with the quality of the photos. They look great in Aperture. They look great in iDVD when I play the project directly on my Mac. The problem is that I burned some DVD's of the project, and when I play the DVD on my Mac (or TV, for that matter) the quality of the photos aren't anywhere near what they are in Aperture or when I play the project directly on the computer. It's useable, but is it normal to have the photo quality fall off pretty noticeably when burning it to a DVD?
(FYI - I'm using the DVD burner that's built-in on my iMac, using Sony DVD+R DVD's, and I don't see any "quality" settings that I'd be able to change before burning.)
ANy help would be greatly appreciated, as - after burning about 20 DVD's - I'm unhappy enough with the quality that I don't even feel like giving them out now.)
    Thanks,
    Tim

Ah - That makes sense. Thanks.
As I said, I've never done anything with iDVD before. In fact, I've never done anything "digital" with photos before. I process them in Aperture, and then make prints and that's it. Which leads me to another question then.....
What I'm trying to do is get the 150 or so photos I've taken of my son's high school baseball games onto some type of media so that I can give one to each of the players. Not knowing anything about the degradation of the photo when turning them into a DVD, I put together a "project" in iDVD where I split the photos into two groups, added two songs, and made a presentation out of it. It sounds like if I want to do something like that Blue-Ray would be the only option to maintain the quality of the photos?
If that's the case, are there any other options? Can I just drag the photos onto a CD, or does a CD compress the photos as well? As I said, I've got about 150 photos that average between 9 - 13 MB's each. Will they fit onto one or two CD's? (I'm not sure how much a CD will hold.)
Any other options/ideas for getting these photos to the players?
Thanks in advance for any more help anyone could provide.....

  • Questions about 1Z0-047 Oracle Database SQL Expert

I am planning to take this exam and I have several questions:
    1) I am using Steve O'Hearn's 'SQL Certified Expert Exam Guide' book and this states the following about SQL functions:
"Be sure to review the Oracle Database SQL Language Reference Manual and review the lengthy description of all of the SQL functions before taking the exam"
In trial tests it seemed that book's information was enough, but how about real exam? Is it necessary to study something in addition to this book information? You can answer regarding other exam objectives as well, if there is something that I should read from some other materials.
    2) The book states that I can add not null constraint to column that has null values, if I specify default value. I tried and cannot, I get error. So the book states it wrongly or do I misunderstand something?
    3) The book states that I cannot drop a NOT NULL constraint, but I can get the job done using: ALTER TABLE table_name MODIFY column_name NULL;
    I tried and I can execute: alter table table_name drop constraint nameofnotnullconstraint;
    4) To use external tables, is only read grant on the directory necessary or also write?
    5) I understood from the book that to flashback table (e.g to before drop) I need to have row movement enabled on the table. But I tried and I can make this flashback operation to table that does not have row movement enabled. How can this be explained!
    Big thanks in advance!

#1) well, the manual is free; find here the SQL Language Reference - http://www.oracle.com/pls/db112/portal.all_books#index-SQL
#2 & 3) If you proved it yourself, that settles it!
    #4) Here's a good article about external tables: http://www.oracle-developer.net/display.php?id=512
I noted this paragraph in it, which might answer your question:
In addition to the standard read-write Oracle directory that we need for our external table, we also need an additional executable directory object for the preprocessor. This directory defines the location of the executables used by the preprocessor (we will be using gzip below). As far as Oracle is concerned, an executable directory is one that has EXECUTE privileges granted on it (this is an 11g feature specifically to support the preprocessor).
    #5) don't know

  • Really easy question about DVDs

I am about to get a new 5g iPod, and I am excited about being able to watch videos on it. But I have a quick question, is it possible to rip DVDs(like you can with CDs) from iTunes?

  • A dumb question about DVD Capacity.

I want to create as high as quality DVD as possible from my iMove (5.02) project using iDVD (5.01). I've started off using DVD+R disks and I'm now considering using Dual Layer DVD's.
The actual iMovie file size of my project is 12Gig at about 60 minutes. It's the same size when I SHARE as a full quality QT file. However when I create an iDVD Project from either the QT file or directly out of iMovie, my DVD Capacity reading is approx. 2.1 of 8Gig.
Now my question is this: What exactly am I reading here? I was under the impression that the DVD Capacity indicated the size of the movie. Obviously a 12Gig movie isn't going to fit onto a DVD, so I assumed that this reading related to the compressed size, but am I wrong? I can't understand why a 12Gig movie would need to be compressed so much. If this is the compressed size, then how can I get iDVD to not compress it so much? I've tried using Best Performance as the encoded setting, but would expect something up in the 6-7Gig range.
If I use a dual layer disk, am I only going to be writing a 2Gig file to it?

    Thanks.
    But two questions.
My iDVD Capacity status bar reads this file as 2 of 8 Gig. Is it telling me that my imported iMovie will be compressed down to 2Gig, if so then why is it compressing the file down so much, OR if not what exactly is this information telling me? If I should expect a reasonable good compression from a 12Gig movie down to say 6 or 7Gig why isn’t it shown in the iDVD Capacity status bar?
Also, at what point does iDVD work out the compression? I don’t usually insert a blank DVD in until I go to burn the project and iDVD requests one, up until that point how does it know what size disk I’m using 4Gig Single or 8Gig Dual Layer.

  • Just a few questions about DVD Ripping and Final Cut 6

    Ok,
Here is my first major concern. I have a wedding that I cut on the Final Cut Studio. After I burnt it to a DVD, I erased the main footage. However, the groom wanted to add something so I went into my backup files to get the information but just so happens that my backup hard drive crashed and it will not recognize on any Mac. (Tried 3 different Macs including 2 PowerMac G5’S and a Power Mac G4) Anyway all I have no is the DVD. I was wondering if anyone knew any good ripping software that I can rip this DVD back to a QuickTime. I have tried a few programs but the quality is just horrible.
My next question is does anyone know when Final Cut Pro 6 is shipping?

Did you lose your autosave vault with the crash? You could open your autosave and grab the last cut and do a media manager capture so you wouldn't have to re-edit or capture all of the media again.
Also, there are people who can get the info off the drive for a modest fee. If this was a paying gig, consider it part of the cost of having done the project. If the groom was satisfied and the project was complete, I guess you could argue that an extra fee is in order if he wants a different version after the final version was already delivered and agreed upon. Otherwise you kind of owe it to him to do whatever it takes to give him a final output.
Make a backup tape as well next time. That way you can recapture and add, then re-backup and re-compress. Lots of re-ings.

  • Really basic questions about dvd

I have figured out that if I slide a DVD into the slot on the right side of my iMAC, then after a pause an application called "DVD Player" will open and the DVD will play.  I have also discovered that to get the disk OUT I can find an image of it on the desktop and drag it to the trash which changes to show an upward pointing arrow.  Or I can right click on the icon and select "Eject".
Where do I go to get answers to the following questions:
Are there other choices for the application that plays my DVD?
    Can ITunes play this DVD?

    1. Only if you've installed any(or Apple's MPEG-2 playback component for unprotected DVDs).
    2. No, not even if the playback component is installed. That codec enables the QuickTime Player and similar applications to play unprotected DVDs.

  • Switcher has question about DVD Label Printing

I recently switched from Windows to Mac Mini. I really have enjoyed the Mac experience. One thing I haven't found though is a way to print DVD labels via a Mac application or via Mac Office. Is there a way or must I get a third party app?

I use Discus. It is cheap (about $40), downloadable, and support just about every label printer and paper label available.
    See it here:
    http://www.magicmouse.com/hdiscusdetail.html
I advise against using paper labels on DVDs. Many have done it successfully, but there are enough horror stories, including destroyed DVD players (label comes loose, gums up the inside) to concern me. I've used the EZ CD Printer (an Epson C60 conversion), and the Epson R300, as well as the CD.DVD duplicator I use now, the Primera Bravo which works perfectly. I've made about 300 DVDs with that.

  • Libretto: Question about DVD docking station

    Im new to computers
The Libretto and the dvd docking station
So when carrying the computer you need to carry the docking station if using dvd.
Does the computer hold the docking station in place while on the move as a all in one unit?
    Thankyou

    Hi
Yes the Docker and Laptop are 2 seperate items that can be locked together and stay together until you unlock them. They can be transported as one unit or 2 seperate ones. Its a very good design as it all works as one unit with the battery powering both units. You would need to carry the docking station if you wanted to use the DVD player but its not that heavy and alot smaller than some mobile DVD players

  • Qosmio G10-133 Question about DVD COMBO Drive replacement

    Hi
my laptop has a DVD driver labled UJ-830B but the device managaer reports that it is a UJ-830S. I have posted before saying I haven't been able to burn DVDs. It gets part way through then errors out saying unable to burn. I have used various software and disc makes but all to no avail.
I purchased an external burner which burns no problems, however it does defeat the object of having one built into the lapotop!!!
Can anyone suggest a suitable replacement drive? I have already tried an NEC 5540A drive, but my laptop didn't recognise that it was installed. I assume it is something to do with Master/Slave?? If the laptop doesn't recognise the drive I am obviously unable to flash any firmware.
    Somebody please help.....

    Hi
Seems you have already noticed that the drive replacement is not so easy.
The internal notebook drives dont support any jumpers like the external drives for desktop PCs and the settings are fixed and in my knowledge not changeable
I found some compatible drives numbers but unfortunately, I did not find the drive names.
It seems this are any internal part numbers.
    DVD Super Multi Drive
    - MATSU****A (G8CC00021610) UJ830
    - MATSU****A (G8CC0001S610)
DVD Super Multi Drive (supporting Double-Layer)
    - MATSU****A (G8CC00021611)
    - TEAC (G8CC00024611)
However, the service partner could provide you a information about compatible drive.

  • A dumb question about DVD player

Hi, im new to mac. Got my macbook about 3 weeks ago. There has been a problem about the DVD player of OSx that i haven't gotten used to. How do you guys do fast forward (or vice versa) while you are watching a DVD? I found that Front Row only allows you to jump between chapters, and I didn't find any buttons or anything like that on the DVD player panel to do so either, except for the shortcut keys on the keyboard.
    Thanks.

and in addition to Pmccain's answer if you go to "Controls" (in the menu bar)->Scan rate you can select the speed in which you scan through the disc when holding down the forward/back button. Anywhere from 2X to 32X.

  • Two questions about the Nokia 920 to Nokia experts...

    Hi,
I am considering the Nokia 920 for replacing my Apple 4. However I have two questions that nobody in a phoneshop can answer. Furthermore I can test it myself as about all Nokia 920 in shops seems to be a dummy for showroom purposes.
Therefore I would appreciate it if somebody can answer these two questions:
    1. Which versions of MS-Office can be read on the Nokia 920?
    2. I have heard there are some difficulties with the Nokia 920 to watch Youtube movies. Is this true? If so, what is  the solution of Nokia. If have heard to load a Metro app that solves these Youtube problems.
I have seen many videos by now about the Nokia 920 but none does cover really these questions. Thanks for taking the time to write me an answer.
    Regards,
    Jan
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Works with Office 2010 at least.
There is at least the latest MS Youtube app to stream video without problems.

  • Question about DVD to iPod transfer

    Hello,
I used these programs and these steps....
    http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/guides.html#1000
to rip a DVD and then start to convert it. I am using the Videora Converter and it says the job is 100 percent done.
However, it hasn't saved the DVD into the output section yet and the thing such as filesize and frame and processed etc... are still going up.
Is something wrong? Or is this normal and I should just let it go until it stops?

That's probably information you should look for on the Videora site, rather than here. I'm not too sure myself, and I have used this software before. I don't remember anything like that happening, but bear in mind, you are dealing with a fairly decent sized file, and sometimes things seem to take longer than they should. If it feels like an unreasonable amount of time, try running the conversion again, from the original rip... or seeing if you can find any info on the Videora site.

  • Questions about DVD burner

So I'm shopping for a DVD burner and I see this:
    "System Requirements
    Mac
    256MB RAM
Mac Intel and Power Mac G4 500 Mhz"
My computer is 400 Mhz so I can't buy this ?
    Another burner says:
    "system requirement:
    Mac OS 10.3.9 / Linux-based system / Win 2000, XP, Vista
Power PC G4 or higher, Mac Intel proc / Pentium IV proc or higher"
    Is this phrase
"Power PC G4 or higher, Mac Intel proc / Pentium IV proc or higher" refering to 3 different things ?
They can't mean a "Power PC G4 with Mac Intel proc since the G4 (at least those from 1999 like mine) are with the Power PC. (Apple switched to Intel in 2005).
On the other hand G4 were manufactured in '05 and '06 too I believe, (not sure when the G5 came out) so what does that mean ? I can't buy this DVD burner ?

yea almost any IDE drive will work on your system.
i bought a Pioneer DVR-110D and installed it on my Beige G3 when it still had the G3 266mhz cpu in it. i had to replace the Apple CD/DVD driver extension and mod the PioneerCDR authoring extension ( to gain finder burn and iTunes burn support)
but after than my drive works 100% in OS 9.2.2 now and has never failed me yet
with any drive will show system requirements but as said above those only concern doing video related editing and making dvd video's.
but it will burn DVD data(DVD-R and RW media only) , play dvd movies, burn CDs just fine
you wont be able to burn DVD+R RW media or DVD DL media in OS 9 cause it dont know how to handle that type of media, you can sometimes read DVD+ media in OS 9.2.2 if its burned a certain way with a OS that is capable of burning the DVD+ media in a certain way.
i dont know if there is software for OS 9.2.2 so it can gain the ability to reconize DVD+ media or not ( more than likely not)

  • Portege 7200 - question about DVD device

Please can you tell me if I can save to my laptop. I purchased it secondhand - it has a floppy disk drive and a DVD Player - I have tried saving to dvd but now understand it to be a player only - I have also tried putting in floppy disks but error message comes up saying disks are not formatted - but they are a mixture of new and old disks (all from the same box). Does this mean the drive is broken? Many thanks.
I have been told I can get a separate dvd rewrite drive but new is expensive - would it be possible to purchase a secondhand one? If so do you have any suggestions of where I can look.
    Many thanks again!
    Teresa

    Hi,
the Floppy disk failure means that your Floppy disks are not formatted, thus have no needed filesystem on it!
Insert the Floppy disk, make a right mouse click at Floppy drive a: at the Explorer and choose "Format".
Then follow the menu! After formatting the disk you can use it!
DVD Drive: Like you said you have only a DVD "reading" Drive! Only the new DVD Writer are able to write on a special Medium called DVD-R, DVD-RW or DVD+R, DVD+RW.
These DVD Writers for Notebooks are expensiver than for Dektops! But at these link you can inform yourself which drive is suitable at and fit in your machine and how expensive an upgrade will be!
