Question about formats

Hi there,
I have a whole bunch of videos from my Panasonic camera. They are .mov and in the QuickTime inspector it says the format is:
Apple Photo - JPEG, 640 x 480, Millions
8-bit Unsigned Integer, Mono, 8.000 kHz
I've never really heard of this format before and was wondering if they work well with iMovie '09? I have already lost a whole edited movie because iMovie '09 didn't seem to save a thing I did (any tips on that?) so please excuse my extreme caution.

I don't understand your question: You appear to have been able to import and edit the file format you asked about. So what exactly are you now asking about that format? You then lost your edits, and have a second question on that issue?
I'll try to address the second question: Your project edits are stored in an iMovie project, which you should be able to find in your Movies:iMovie Projects folder. Your original footage is likewise stored in your Movies:iMovie Events folder. iMovie normally stores your edits automatically, like it or not.
For the "lost" project, is the entire project gone (does not appear in the Finder or in the Project Browser) or is it an empty project? Is it possible it's on another drive that was attached when you made the project, but not now?

Question about Formatting Buffalo USB 1TB external drive for use with Mac Book Pro Mountain Lion HD

Hi there, Have Mountain Lion HD operating system (not sure if it is 10.8 or 10.8.1. or 10.8.2) and have a Buffalo USB 3.0 1TB hard drive. When go to utilities to try and format with Mac OS extended, following 3 files show. DriveNavi. exe, Slm.exe and Mac. The option to left click and erase menu is not there. Or at least not as shown in all the help videos.
It is USB connection so will take ages but want to use drive to store video footage and also partition to back up Time Machine. ( travelling in South America and no other Ext Drive option available too buy) how much space should i assign to Time Machine when partitioning? Is there anything else i need to think about? as new to formatting. Any thing else i can do to make process of transfering footage to Buffalo quicker?
Final question is if it is finally reformatted am i going to have to spend so long accessing footage from hard drive when back home and editing that it really is not worth if, and i should just write this off as an inappropriate purchase, and try and buy more memory cards and not bother with transfering/storing? Thanks in advance for time spent trying to assist.

Use Apple's Disk Utility in the Applications/Utilities folder to format the drive.
The programs on the drive given to you by the manufacturer is likely backup software (or malware) and essentially worthless, it will be wiped when you format the drive.
I do NOT advise you partition that drive for TimeMachine, rather I advise you not to use TimeMachine at all for your purposes because TM is just a backup, not a bootable drive.
Rather do this.
Get another hard drive that is equal to or slightly larger than your boot drive.
Format the drive in Disk Utiltiy > 1 Partition, option: GUID, Format: OS X Extended journaled, click Erase and move the slider one spot to the right and click Erase. This will take some time as it's going to map off any failing sectors it can BEFORE you lay data on the drive corrupting it.
Next, pay for and download Carbon Copy Cloner, use the default settings and simply clone internal drive to the external drive. this will also take some time the first time.
Next use Disk Utility to Repair Permisisons on both drive. Now reboot the machine and hold the option key down, you can select the external drive clone to boot from!!
You can update the clone the same way by using CCC, but it doesn't take as long, only copying changes.
This is better than TimeMachine as a bootable clone is bootable in case your internal drive fails to boot the machine.
Use the first drive for storage and be very gentle with it while it running, like you should do for all hard drives as they are subjective to shock damage.
The objective with the clone drive is you keep it safe, and not carting it around where it can be more subjective to damage like the other drive will be.
Remmeber you need 2 forms of hardware backup at all times.

I just started learning vim and am wondering how I can get it to auto format some code. For example:

If you want vim to autoindent while typing, customize your ~/.vimrc file. I posted mine here: http://linuxandsuch.wordpress.com/2011/06/19/my-vimrc/ a few days back. I recommend all the options.
However, if you want to indent an already existing file use the indent program. Install with
sudo pacman -S indent
And then, to indent your file, run:
indent myfile.c
I'd recommend reading the manpage for indent to learn to tweak it to your coding style though .

A Question About Formats....

I do weekly video podcasts for students and parents who are connected to our church, video promos for special events, and highlight videos from past events (like trips and retreats). Up and until this time I've exclusively distributed these via the web as .mp4 files - ranging from very small to high definition. I like doing this - it's all QuickTime based, I can use a variety of encoders, and it integrates well with iWeb and MobileMe (don't mock me - I know).
My question is this: how safe am I using .mp4 as a distribution format? Has the iPod made QuickTime universal enough that most people have it installed on their system? I use it both for streaming movies (embedded into websites) and downloadable movies.
My alternatives are to make flash videos with Adobe Media Encoder or create .avi files in MPEG Streamclip, but would like to avoid doing so.

from my experience I see Flash as one of the most used across platforms when it comes to web distribution (embed players)... as many sites run flash object, is very likely that most PC/Mac users will have the flash player on their systems.
You can also provide the file download through a QT movies.

Lacie 2 Big: a question about formatting-.

No sniggering at the back: RAID and related subjects is not my forte. I actually own a large, 8-bay storage tower, but I got the supplier to configure it as JBOD for me at source. So.....
I just bought a Lacie 2 Big Thunderbolt, 6 TB drive. Out of the box,when connnected it comes up as one icon, of 6 TB's in size. Fine: that is what I want. I think. The reason why I'm not sure is, because what I seek is a JBOD-type arangement,where the two drives appear as one continous device. Is that what I have here out of the box? I certainly looks like it. I don't really want a RAID-configured setup: I've heard bad things about it, relating to reliability and, anyway, I'm not using it for backup. I'm wanting to stream large amounts of audio.
I looked at the Mac's Disk Utility and the Lacie also comes up as two , 3 TB "slices", but,to all intents of purposes, they're "invisible" on the desktop. As an example of my ongoing ignorance on this, another question: if I copied over,say, 4 TB's of data to the Lacie, as it is out of the box, can I assume that that single mounted icon will show the 4 TB's,as if it's contained in one drive? I specifiy 4 B, because it exceeds 3 TB in size, referring to the two 3TB slices mentioned earlier.
I think the 2 Big seems right for what I want as it is, but I don't want to waste time putting data on it, only to find it's not configured in the way I'd imagined.
BTW, for what it's worth, my OS is Mountain Lion, and the computer is the latest,slim, iMac, 32GB RAM.

Hi, and many thanks for the reply. What's bad about RAID? Well, you've immediately pointed out something that is better handled by a JBOD configuration! I did a quick research on this very forum and some people said it was unreliable and could incur data loss.
I appreciate the tech advice regarding JBOD. However, right now, because I was in a hurry and didn't get any answers. I went ahead with the default RAID zero. I already have a 4TB drive with over 2.3 TB of samples, and copied it all over. It took 10 hours, so in a hurry, sounds slightly ironic now.
In terms of losing one of the HD's, as you pointed out, I do have the backup on the 4 TB; I'll always have the data there to restore from, so I don't feel quite so anxious about it.
However, because it's a Lacie, and they have been notoriously unreliable in the past ( I, personally have lost two Lacoe drives ), Im not 100% comfortable about hte reliability. I hear they've improved, though.

Simple Question about Format

I have created spreadsheet in Numbers on my iPad. First column is date 1 (eg Jan 1, 2012) second column is date 2 (say Feb 1, 2012) third column gives me duration by subtracting date2 from date 1 (in this case it gives me 31d) now for fourth column I am using simple formula (multiuplying 3rd column value by 0.25) now I should see 7.75 in this column (31x0.25) but I only see 7 here. The reason being... format of 4th column remains "duration" type only. I tried many times to set format of this column as "Number with 2 decimal places" but no success. What am I missing here. Help is appreciated.

try using the formula DUR2DAYS(). There is a whole suite of dur2???() functions. I do not have an iOS devices with Numbers so cannot be much more helpful. The Numbers on iOS forum is here:

I need help with a question about formatting and recovery

Hello, I have accidentally downloaded a trojan virus onto my computer and I have been told by tech support that the only way to completely rid my computer of its effects is to format my hard drive and restore my computer to factory defaults. I only NEED a handful of files and they arent infected so i already have them on a flash drive ready to be copied over to a restored version.
My Toshiba A665 S6050 supposedly has the recovery items and to access it you must hold "0" while starting it up... is that true? if it is true, after I format my hard drive, will i still be able to hold "0" on start-up and restore it to factory defaults or will formatting it wipe out that function?

Mark, if you elect to restore your hard disk to it's original out-of-the-box contents, then the whole disk will be exactly the way you got it, including the recovery partition.

Question about format and capture in FCP7

I'm capturing SD NTSC 29.97 footage and want to convert it to Pro Res 422 HQ. Do I have to capture it as 10 bit NTSC Uncompressed and then use compressor to turn that into ProRes, or if I set capture to Prores 422 HQ will it convert the footage during capture..or..when I do an Apple-E to export it from the capture, is that when it would convert to Pro Res? What is the best way to do what I'm after here? Converting NTSC (BetaSP) to ProResw 422 HQ? Please outline the steps. Thanks very much! Steve

Question about exporting FBL3N data in Pivot table format

Dear all
I have a question about the "exporting file" function of ECC 6.0.
We started to use ECC 6.0 system, and it appears that we are no longer able to export "FBL3N data" to a local PC in pivot table format.
Is there a way to do it?
We used to be able to do so when the system is 4.6.

You can do that. Execute report FBL3N with desired GL account in it. After when report has been executed right click on it. There will be an option Spread Sheet. Select all available format. In drill down select 08 (Excel in existing XXL format) and press OK. There you will get pivot table option for downloading., Hope this will help you resolve your query.

First, don't specify the package path in the argument
declaration. Instead import the event object:
import mx.rpc.events.ResultEvent;
The docs state this emphatically.
Second, try "lastResult", in place of "result":
arData=mx.utils.ArrayUtil.toArray(event.lastResult); // I am
not positive about this. I maybe recall reading that result was ok
for the event object, but maybe not.
Finally, why do you want to convert the xml? You certainly
could, but it would be a manual process, recursively reading the
existing xml nodes and building the new structure, but again, why?
Just use a labelFunction if necessary to display the nodes as
you wish.

Question about final format for integrated film clips and moving images in webpages created by Muse

About a year ago I gave up even trying to construct websites. There were too many new factors and technical aspects of correct scripts and coding to make it interesting for a designer with no interest in programming. It´s understandable that all new gadgets such as mobile surf panels, mobile internet on different cell phones, lap tops and stationary computers and a lot of different browsers made it impossible to run with just plain html. But when I found out that many viewers couldn´t even watch Flash movies or solutions with flash components I said enough is enough.
Now a while ago when HTML5 was released I heard that it made it possible to create films and almost identical content as with Flash films without using them. Bought some templates and realized that it really worked. So here are my questions:
What format does Adobe Muse CC use when I add films and stuff into it, and what format will come out of it when it´s an official website?
Do Adobe Muse CC convert film formats so they will be visualized correctly on the end viewers browser, computer or phone?
Will Adobe Muse CC advice me of what film or animation format will be the best for my viewers on the web or on a mobile internet?
Are there any guidelines available for how I shall save and export filmclips or animations before they are imported into Adobe Muse CC?

Hello Jack,
Currently, you can only import an swf file or you can embed videos from youtube, vimeo etc. into Muse / add HTML5 Video to Your Website.

Questions about using the Voice Memos app

I'm currently an Android user, but will be getting an iPhone 6 soon. My most used app is the voice memos app on my Android phone. I have a couple questions about the iPhone's built-in voice memos app.
-Am I able to transfer my voice memos from my Android phone to my iPhone, so my recordings from my Android app will show up in the iPhone's voice memos app?
-When exporting voice memos from the iPhone to computer, are recordings in MP3 format? If not, what format are they in?
-In your opinion, how is the recording quality of the voice memos app?

You cannot import your Android voice memos to your iPhone's voice memo app. You might be able to play the Android memos and have the iPhone pick up the audio and record it.

App quality is excellent.

Questions about using Bitlocker without TPM

We currently use Bitlocker to encrypt our Windows 7 computers with TPM. Now we are looking at encrypting some Windows 7 computers without a TPM. I see how to change the group policy setting to allow Bitlocker without a TPM. I have looked at a lot of other
threads and I have a few questions about how the Bitlocker without TPM works.
1) I see a USB drive containing a key is required for Bitlocker configurations without a TPM, say the end user loses this USB drive, what are the recovery options for their computer?

We have recovery backed up to AD when Bitlocker is enabled, but how could we do this recovery on a computer on computer where it's USB is lost? Would we have to remove the HD itself and attach it to another computer to access?
2) After enabling Bitlocker on a computer without a TPM and using the USB Drive for the key, is there a way to also add a PIN or password protection at bootup?

Configuring a startup key is another method to enable a higher level of security with the TPM. The startup key is a key stored on a USB flash drive, and the USB flash drive must be inserted every time the computer starts. The startup key is used to provide
another factor of authentication in conjunction with TPM authentication. To use a USB flash drive as a startup key, the USB flash drive must be formatted by using the NTFS, FAT, or FAT32 file system.
You must have a startup key to use BitLocker on a non-TPM computer.
