Question about HDs showing in Disk Utility

Recently i did a restore, erasing the Macintosh HD and reinstalling Yosemite. After that i noticed the HDs were listed a little differently in Disk Utility. The main hard drive name, blue selected in the pic below, used to always say the actual hard drive name (Toshiba 750GB....). However now i noticed both say Macintosh HD. There doesn't seem to be any problems, but just something little i noticed and was unsure about. I recall it was listed the usual way in the disk utility when i was erasing the hd and reinstalling the os - with the toshiba hd name on top..
Is this an issue - is there something that needs to be done? Or how could i revert it back to the way it used to be? When i did the restore i didn't seem to allow you to change the name of the actual HD.
Thanks.

This sounds like you either have a faulty SATA cable or it is improperly connected internally. You will not be able to boot via recovery if the drive itself is not showing up, as recovery is just a partition that is seperate from your boot volume on the same drive. So, are you referring to your boot volume, or the whole drive? How are connecting the drive externally?
Open terminal and enter the following command. Post the output in your reply:
diskutil list | open -f -a textedit

The drive shows in disk utility but the options to repair are greyed out. The drive ejects sometimes but not others. The drive powers up with light and I can hear noise (not loud just a hum that confirms (i think) that it is spinning.). Hi Christina,
It's quite possible the AC PSU has given out, if It's only Bus powered as it appears, that's the worst idea ever & asking for eventual problems.
    What Format is it?
Did you install any WD SW?

  • Strange .dmg showing in Disk Utility

I just noticed this disk image:
I followed the file path and found a locked folder. Only system has read/write access, no one else does.
I checked my MBP with Mavericks and found the same folder; however, in Mavericks, it is not showing in Disk Utility.
Does anyone have any ideas what that does (I can see it's "flashplayer") and what it is doing in that particular location? Thanks.

I have the same, but I am using Lion:
My guess, and it is a guess, it is Adobe Flash.
    Ciao.

  • Wd my book shows in disk utility but not in finder

can open the drive from within disk utility and a regular finder window will pop up. all data is intact. verify and repair show no issues. have checked finder preferences for showing external drives.

Do know the name of any file that is on the iso image? If so, do a Spotlight search on the file name and see if it show up. If it does, Command click on the result in the Spotlight list and see if the enclosing folder opens in Finder.

  • Mounted .iso file shows in Disk Utility, but inaccesible through finder

    Hello.
I have an .iso file that used to mount flawlessly, but now when double clicked shows only in Disk Utility, while remaining inaccesible otherwise (finder hierarchy starting from computer should show all mounted drives, but this one is missing). Disk Utility doesn't find any errors. Is there any other way to find out what's wrong?
    thanks

  • Thunderbolt WD Duo, does not show in Disk Utility

Hi Have imac 27 (late 2012) with 10.8.3 update OSX. Connecting to WD Thunderbolt Duo, the disk does not show in disk Utility, sys log or in any connection to the system. WD utility does not seems it either. Restart does not help. By disk returning to seller, the disk works fine on other comp (with the same cable, with the same power adapter)
Is there any issue known with the thunderbolt ports? Tried both all found on internet, but no resolution, to my issues.
Seems to be my imac hardware or maybee the software (thunderbotl 1.2) update.
    Lukas

All thunderbolt port tried, cable exchanged, no change
I have done following procedure , no change
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.

  • Flashing Question Mark At Start Up/ Disk Utility Not Working

I am having the old flashing question mark in a file show up when I try to start my computer. I went through a lot of the forums and I have attempted the Disk Utility. When I put the 10.3 install disk in and restart it takes me to the opening screen. If go to disk utility and start it and I have three options: 734.6 MB Pioneer DVD, Session 1, and Mac OSX Install Disk all with a CD icon by them. Not sure which one to pick. Even when I select any though, it does not give me the option to push the repair disk button. It is never available. Anyone know what to do here?

Exactly this happened to me two weeks ago. Unfortunately in my case it was a result of hard disk failure - my heads had burnt out and I had total data loss (I was fortunately backed up recently).
I would suggest taking your mac to a reputable computer firm, preferably Apple who can diagnose hard disk failure immediately. If that is the case you will need a replacement HD, which might be a good opportunity to expand HD size on your system (prices are always coming down; I took the opportunity to go from 60 to 120GB, for £140).
If you are not backed up and ABSOLUTELY NEED YOUR DATA then do NOT give your machine to Apple there and then however; despite assurances, you may never see your HD again, and at any rate once it has been removed it should be handled extremely carefully to prevent platter damage and compromising future data retrieval. It may not be treated with proper respect whilst a replacement is being fitted. Therefore take it to a data retrieval specialist first, who may also replace the HD for you anyway, at similar or lower cost. The cost of data retrieval is very variable but is generally about £500 if an 'invasive procedure' (HD repair) is necessary.
I hope this isn't your situation, but as I say these were exactly the symptoms of my HD failure 2 weeks ago.

  • External hard drives not showing in disk utility

When I connect a new Eagle/Consus W-Series external hard drive enclosure to my 15" PB, the hard drive doesn't show-up in the left hand pane of the Disk Utility window. The only thing that shows is the drive in the PB. The hard drive in the enclosure is a WD SATA and is connected via USB cable. The same thing happens, or doesn't happen, when I'm connected via ethernet to my G5 2.3GHz Dual Core: when I open Disk Utility on the PB, the drive on the G5 doesn't show. What I'm trying to attempt is to mirror/clone Tiger from my PB onto the new, to me, G5 using SuperDuper.

Hi, Bob. I obviously didn't understand the situation properly, and now that I realize that, I'm afraid I still don't.
When the G5 is connected, via ethernet to my PB, the hard drive does not show-up in the PB's disk utility pane.
The G5 doesn't have a hard drive in it now, is that correct? So why connect it via Ethernet to the Powerbook?
If you're trying to clone the Powerbook's hard drive onto the G5's drive inside the external enclosure, all that needs to be connected is the external enclosure to the Powerbook, via USB cable. The G5 itself isn't involved in that process at all. When the G5's drive is in the enclosure and connected to the Powerbook, does it appear in Disk Utility on the Powerbook? If not, see my previous suggestions, with the exception of my comment about it not working with either computer.
If the SATA hard drive doesn't appear on the Powerbook's desktop or in Disk Utility when it is in the G5 and the computers are properly networked via Ethernet, recheck your sharing settings: the G5's drive must be shared to be visible to the Powerbook. In that mode, you may not be able to clone the Powerbook's drive to the other one, because the drive in the G5 is being used to run the G5. But if the G5's drive is partitioned, you should be able to clone the Powerbook's drive, via Ethernet, to a partition other than the one which contains the OS that's running the G5.
While the hard drive is in the external enclosure, I can hear it spinning, and am assuming that all the connections are working properly.
If the drive spins, you can be sure it's getting power, and that's good. But you can't safely conclude from that that any or all of the data connections are working properly; in fact the evidence suggests the contrary.
In short, there may be not one but two problems at work here: incorrect sharing settings when the two computers are networked, and a bad cable, connection, or enclosure when the drive is connected to the Powerbook via USB.
EDIT: Let me also add that if the only Tiger installer discs you have are the ones that came with the Powerbook, then having copies of that Tiger installation on both of your computers would be a violation of the software license that accompanied those discs, which entitles you to have Tiger installed on only one computer at a time. If that's the case, you should really buy a retail Tiger installer disc to use on the G5.

  • No drives show in disk utility.  holding option only shows internet recovery

Alright. I had windows 7 running in bootcamp on a 13 inch macbook pro 2011 june/july model and everything was running fine untill i closed the lid. When i closed the lid down after about 2-3 minutes the laptop restarted.. upon hearing this sound i opened the lid back up to find a white screen and after awhile a flashing folder like icon with a big question mark started flashing. So i rebooted thr laptop and held down option key. When the select network came up there were no drives listed above it.. after a minute or two internet recovery came up. So i ran this.it then went back to the select language for installing lion again. After navigating through the menus it came to select drive but the list was empty. When i checked disk utility ither it frozenor listed like two main cataagorys and two subs. I need some help. Anyone know whats wrong? Will update with more information needed. Note: i do not have the disks that came with the macbook pro i bought it used from a pawnshop around january. Has run perfect untill today

Also, Finder displays the correct disk usage at the root level:

  • New HDD not showing in disk utility

    Help please!
i can up on a broken G5 i have replaced the HDD. now i am trying to install tiger. but the new internal HDD is not showing up in disk utility.
i plugged my passport in and it popped right up.
some one please let me know what you think.

Well, having a had hard drive connected may cause a grey screen (if the system cannot successfully perform a check of connected devices). Not sure about the fan.
If you have not done so yet, be sure to try resetting PRAM
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
If that does not help, you can also try resetting the SMU (power management).
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1767
    Follow the procedure precisely.
It is also possible that the old drive was not bad and your iMac has some other problem. Did you ever test the previous drive on another Mac (or connected externally) to confirm it was faulty? That +other problem+ may be what you are experiencing now.
Also, I asked this previously but, are you able to start up the iMac using the optical drive, with a Mac OS X installation disc in there?

  • Hard drive upgrade wont show on disk utility

Im trying to upgrade a white 13 inch macbook from a 80gig Toshiba drive to a seagate momentus 500gb drive. Ive been at it all day with no luck. I swapped it but when i restart with the installation discs inside and go to disk utility to format, it just wont show. I ended up taking apart one of my external drives and using the adaptor from there and plugging it in as an external via usb and the drive shows on the laptop. I was able to format it (extended journaled) but as soon as i put it back in, its a ghost drive.
Im thinking since the drive works perfectly via usb but just wont work inside the laptop maybe in had something to do with the power. The old drive is rated DC+5V at 1.0A and the new seagate drive is DC+5V at 0.4...something A . This means the old one drew more current and therefore more power P=VI . So the laptop should be able to power it.
Any ideas what could be going wrong? Solutions?
any help is greatly appreciated, im getting close to giving up.

I would recommended a Hitachi Travelstar 500GB 7200 RPM HD20500IDK/7K 16MB Buffer 7200RPM 5V 800mA DC as a much better drive than the Seagate Momentus, I've seen and read many negative reviews and feedback about the Momentus.
I replaced the original 250GB 5400RPM hard drive in my MacBook 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo: (13-inch, Late 2009) – Model A1342 Polycarbonate Unibody ( MC207LL/A ) with a 7200 RPM HD20500IDK/7K with no problems at all and The Hitachi Travelstar 500GB is extremely fast and quiet.

  • MacBook Optical Drive Does Not Show in Disk Utility

    Hi Everybody,
So I put a CD in my CD/DVD drive on my white 2009 Macbook and it made a funny sound. The CD did not register with the system. And when I open Disk Utility, it doesn't recognize the optical drive at all.
Is there anything I can do?
    Many thanks!

Can you or did you eject the cd? Then check apple (upper left corner) about this mac/ more / serial- ata in left panel. Does it show there. Recheck disk utilities and see if it is now there. No? Restart holding down command/option/p/r/ for three chimes. Try another cd. Same? shut down and do SMC reset.  Remove battery if you can and power cord hold down start button for 10 seconds. If battery is not removable hold down command/option/shift while pressing down the start button for 10 seconds.  Restart and retry. If still no drive showing, the optical drive is most likely bad.

  • HD not booting on Mac, or showing in Disk Utility

So, I already know some of the warning signs of a failing HD, and I've read some posts similar to mine here on the forums. I have a different situation tho. Let me lay out for you….
Mac's main HD won't boot - I get the question-mark folder on start up
Booting from another external and opening disk utility does NOT show the main HD
Plugging the main HD into an external inclosure and booting from a different Mac DOES show the HD
So, this led me to believe maybe the SATA connection is messed up
But, placing a different HD inside the Mac and booting, acted completely normal
So I have no idea what the problem is. The HD reads fine when plugged into an external inclosure, boots and runs fine, and all files and programs are working like normal. But it won't run inside the Mac. Even though another HD of mine will boot and run when placed inside the Mac.
    Please help! Thanks

    Thanks for your help!
Any idea how much replacing the hard drive would cost? It also needs a new battery so I may just have to get a new MacBook if the hard drive is a lot!

  • New HD not showing in disk utility?

my HD fried so I just installed a new 250GB HD about 20mins ago. It's not showing up on the disk utility. It shows one for 4.8GB but not the 250GB? bad connection? I'll try to reconnect it again. It's a Seagate, same brand as I took out of my 1.66 intel Mac mini. help please, I'm computer less, thanks!

    got it working.

  • External Hard Drive doesn't mount, not showing in Disk Utility

I have had this Western Digital external hard drive for a few months now and until this evening it worked fine. It won't show up on my Macbook Pro and it is not present in the Disk Utility section. The light on the external hard drive is on so it doesn't appear to be a power issue. I have another of the same exact hard drive and it works fine. I tried switching USB cables and even power supplies and I can't get it to work. Does anyone know how to recover the files or is the hard drive toast?

Something's wrong inside the case; it's either a problem which is preventing the computer from properly connecting to the drive or the drive itself is dead.
Data recovery from a failed drive can only be done by a professional service, which can charge hundreds or thousands of dollars.
