Question about how a RAC database connects to ASM

I have recently installed Grid Clusterware 11.2.0.1 on an IBM PSeries server running AIX. Today, I installed the Oracle database software, version 11.2.0.1, but when I try to start the database, I get an error message: ORA-01031: insufficient privileges.
I can log in to the ASM instance using "sys as sysdba" but when I try to log in to ASM as "sys as sysasm" then I get the same error message.
Obviously I have configured something incorrectly. I would appreciate any help locating the proper documentation so I can correct my errors. All advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi,
Regarding the AIX group "asmdba", we do not have separate administrators to handle the administration of ASM in 11g. I read in the documentation (Grid Infrastructure Installation Guide) that if separate administrators are not wanted for ASM and the database(s), then "asmdba" group is optional. Would you recommend creating this group anyway?I agree to create OS group asmdba it's mandatory only if you are using different user to GUI Install.
But it's a question of organization of the environment. Each group will designate different kinds of permissions and different roles.
So, Although the ASM come built into Oracle Database (actually 11.2 and higher Oracle has created a new layer called Grid Infrastructure), Clusterware, ASM and Database products are completely different for different purposes. With the evolution of these products believe that the tendency is they have their own installation and administration. Yet all will work together.
Create a group asmdba will not impact the current environment, only will help keep the environment more organized to the future. Look on the bright side, if one day you need of group asmdba, you does not need to re-configure the environment.
Correcting my previous post the group that has permission to access as SYSASM privilege is asmadmin instead of asmdba.
Cheers,
Levi Pereira

    Hello! I have a huge question about how can I get connected my iphone 4 with my car Is there any opption on find my car application? I have a Volvo xc60 and I want to be connected all the time with my iphone. Can I do that?

    Hello. I can say that you have a quite strange „huge question”… It’s non-sense to stay connected with your car which is hundreds miles away. Unless…
    I have a theory. You don’t want to controll your car, you want to controll somebody who is driving the car. Volvo XC 60 is a nice family car, usually used by married men between age of 35-45, probably with small children, so it’s very unlikely that you want to controll your teanage kid, mainly because probably even if you would give him/her to drive the car in the neighborhoud, I don’t think that he/she would be „several hundred miles away”…  If your child is not young teneage anymore, and he/she has his/her own life, but you want to control him/her, that is sick… So I am convinced that you want to controll your husband who probably travelling often! Am I wright?
    Isnt’t nice at all! Would you like if you would be monitorized in such way? I bet you don’t!
    Anyway, iPhone is smart, you can use for many things, but come on, you really were thinking that there is such kind of application???
    What could you do it's to put in the car a GPS survelling system, however I don't think that you could do it without your husband knowledge, otherwise he won't be able to start the engine...

    But when I try to call that applet from browser. It is giving ClassNotFound exception.
    Does anybody know How to get database connection in applet ?

  • Round trip workflow with proxies between Premiere and AE / a more general question about how these programs work?

    Hi all,
    I'm new to editing with proxies in Premiere and have some questions about how to handle the relationship with After Effects. Say I have a rough cut (with proxies) and I want to send it to AE to do some effects. The simplest thing to do seems to be to replace the proxies with the originals in Premiere, send the project to AE and do my thing. But if I then want to send the project back to Premiere, it will involve the original files, which are too machine-intensive for me to edit. In theory, it seems like there should be a way to send the project with original footage to AE, do effects, send it back to Premiere, and then replace it with proxies to do further editing while retaining the effects.
    This leads to a confusion about how AE works. When I do an effect, am I correct in assuming that it does nothing to the original file? If that's the case, it seems like it shouldn't matter (in the editing stage) what file AE "applies" an effect to (proxy or original). But I feel like there's a hitch in this workflow. The same question could also be asked about going back and forth in Speed Grade.
    Perhaps there is no real answer to this and the best option is to save effects and grading for after I have picture lock, but sometimes that's not entirely possible or convenient, etc.
    Hopefully this makes some sense—It's a little hard to explain.
    Thanks.

  • How to organize RAC database files on ASM

    How to Organize RAC database files on ASM.
    Say,
    DISK Group = DATA
    DISK Group= FLASH
    Instance = prod1, prod2
    '+DATA/PROD/datafiles/'
    or
    Need to Organize sepratly for each instance specific db files.
    as
    '+DATA/PROD1/datafiles'
    '+DATA?PROD2/datafiles'
    Thanks in Advance,
    Regards
    Satish

    It would be just PROD - since that's the database name...and BTW, when you use DBCA to create a database using ASM, it organizes data files under PROD and it doesn't use instance names.

  • A few questions about how ZPM works.

    We have patch management (in ZCM 11.2.2), but honestly don't use it much. I have a few questions about how it works that might make me use it more, if I understand it more.
    If I deploy a patch (or a set of patches), it creates a bundle for that deployment. That bundle seems to include actions that deploy the actual patch bundles (correct?). Do I have to recreate a new deployment bundle every time I want to push a new patch? i.e. If I push a Java update, and a month later, a new one comes out, do I build out a new bundle with the new patch in it, or do I modify the old one?
    Once the patch is deployed, can I safely delete that deployment bundle, or should they just pile up?
    Is there a way to "auto-approve" patches? Lets say I always want a group of machines to have the latest Adobe Flash Player patches. Can I set up ZPM to automatically cache and push the latest patches for a specific product, or do I have to manually remediate each patch? (I'm thinking of how MS's WSUS does "auto-approval")
    I see most packages aren't cached in list, but occasionally, a patch is cached without me touching it. Why? Can I change what gets automatically cached?
    Thanks for any help/answers you can provide.

    For #1, (assuming you're not using baselines), you would check the new version of the patch (vulnerability) and do a new deployment.
    #2 - once you're satisified that the machines are deployed (or the best to your ability) you can delete the DEPLOYMENT package. It doesn't delete the actual vulnerability bundles to my knowledge. That's why it's a good idea to name your bundle deployments with something meaningful, IMO (and maybe include a nice desription).
    #3 - currently I don't believe this is possible. I know you can probably configure it to auto-download the patches, but not auto-deploy everything. Given the propensity for software to wreck other things (hello MS .NET patches), this is probably not a good idea. At least I'd never auto-download and auto-deploy any patches without testing them first, and certainly take my servers a little more cautiously than my workstations.
    #4 - I think you can configure what's cached, but I could be wrong.
    I know there's a lot of improvements coming in the pipeline, and it doesn't hurt to "vote" for your enhancements via the enhancement system (more work for Shaun--haha)

  • How to use RAC database connection details in oc4j.xcfg files

    Hi all,
    we are using oc4j.xcfg files for the application module configuration for an ADF application. and one of the database has been configured on RAC. Any input on how to specify the RAC database details in the oc4j.xcfg file specially for the host name parameter.
    The example entry like in oc4j.xcfg is like
    ?xml version = '1.0' encoding = 'UTF-8'?>
    <BC4JConfig>
    <AppModuleConfigBag>
    <AppModuleConfig name="AppModuleLocal">
    <AppModuleJndiName>dbta.model.AppModule</AppModuleJndiName>
    <DeployPlatform>LOCAL</DeployPlatform>
    <JDBCName>connectDB</JDBCName>
    <ApplicationName>dbta.model.AppModule</ApplicationName>
    <jbo.project>Model</jbo.project>
    </AppModuleConfig>
    </AppModuleConfigBag>
    <ConnectionDefinition name="connectDB">
    <ENTRY name="ConnectionName" value="connectDB"/>
    <ENTRY name="URL" value="jdbc:oracle:thin:<user>/<pass>@<server>:<Port>:<SID>"/>
    <ENTRY name="HOSTNAME" value="<server>"/>
    <ENTRY name="JDBC_PORT" value="<port>"/>
    <ENTRY name="SID" value="<SID>"/>
    <ENTRY name="ConnectionType" value="JDBC"/>

    <ENTRY name="ORACLE_JDBC_TYPE" value="thin"/>
    <ENTRY name="DeployPassword" value="true"/>
    </ConnectionDefinition>
    how to specify the failover nodes details in the above entry for host name etc.

  • Create RAC Database Connection in Sql Developer

    Hi All,
    Can you please let me know how to create a new connection for a RAC Database. When we use the scan IP and service name, it always displays the network adapter could not establish the connection, even though the listener and database are up and running. After repeatedly, trying atlease 20 times, then it will connect to the database. There are no issue while connecting to a single instance database.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Krishna

    Hi Krishna,
    You don't give any details about version numbers but, in general, the Basic connection type should work -- there is no need to use TNSNames. If you can connect to the RAC system via SQL*Plus with an EZConnect string, one would hope the same host/port/service works in SQL Developer for a Basic connection type. But that may be just a hope, I suppose, depending on your overall configuration for SCAN. Or perhaps you pass the full TNS descriptor to connect to SQL*Plus?
    In case of long thin RAC JDBC URL, presumably you mean including the full TNS descriptor in the url. I really did not find very much on the forums regarding SCAN, but searching more widely on the internet I note someone resolving a JDBC-specific issue (where SQL*Plus connects just fine) with comments like this: +"The host name in the connectiong string be the same as the init.ora parameter remote_listener and it should also match to the SCAN name. We should not include any domain names with SCAN name , remote_listername and with HOST setting in connecting string"+. So apparently you have to be very careful with the url specification.
    Hope this helps,
    Gary

  • SUP - 2 questions about the CDB (cache database)

    Hi,
    I have 2 questions about the cache database and the cache groups:
    1 - How does the "On demand" cache group policy exactly works? I know that online cache group is without storing any data on the CDB making direct requests to de backend from the device, the DCN is based on updating from the backend, the scheduled is based on a time period, but I don't understand how the "on demand" exactly works, and why it has a time period too.
    2 - Is it possible to query the cache database table to check the data that SUP has stored? How can I do this?
    Thank you!

    I posted a similar question in SUP Apps project not too long ago and  Paul Horan provided this useful reply:
    Create a "Sybase ASA v12.x for Unwired Server" connection profile in the Enterprise Explorer.  I named mine CDB.
    : Host = localhost (or whatever the machine name is)
    : Port = 5200
    : Database name = "default"
    : User Name = "dba"
    : Password = "sql"
    Obviously, change the userid/password to match, if you changed them during install time.
    Connect, and you'll see the "default" database displayed.
    Navigate down through the Tables folder, and the first subfolder is labeled something like [#should_delete_sk ...]  Start there.
    You'll see a bunch of tables with the naming convention "D1" + package name + package version + MBO name.  These are the cache tables for the MBOs.

  • How to get database connection in common java class

    hi friendz,
    plz help me...
    I am using JDEV 11.1.2.2.0 version.
    my problem is I'm writing common java class which can reuse any application.
    in this case when im create database connection like this,
    String username = "a";
    String password = "b";
    String thinConn = "jdbc:oracle:thin:@IP:1521:database";
    DriverManager.registerDriver(new OracleDriver());
    Connection conn =
    DriverManager.getConnection(thinConn, username, password);
    conn.setAutoCommit(false);
    return conn;
    but this statement not working in java class.its working only backing bean.
    import oracle.jdbc.OracleDriver;
    DriverManager.registerDriver(new OracleDriver());
    how can i do that??
    hope your help
    -Harsh-

    What is the error message in Java class?
    With JDBC 4.0 driver the DriverManager class has added support for the Java SE Service Provider mechanism to the getConnection() and getDrivers() methods using which JDBC drivers may be loaded automatically. The following Class.forName() method is not required to be invoked.
    Class.forName(“oracle.jdbc.OracleDriver”);
    Only the following is required to obtain a connection.
    String url="jdbc:oracle:thin:@localhost:1521:ORCL";
    Connection connection = DriverManager.getConnection(url,"oe", "pw");

  • I have a question about how to contact HR with e-mail.

    I read the rules about anything about HR is not allowed, but I also read to contact HR directly, so I won't ask anything further here. My question is, how? I searched for an e-mail, but all I have been able to find is a phone number I can't ring since I have no phone, just internet. Thank you.

    Hello Dennis,
    If you're a Best Buy or Geek Squad employee and do not have access to a telephone, then two alternative contact options exist for you: speak with your direct supervisor or use the My HR app within Employee Toolkit. If you are not a Best Buy employee, however, our HR support team will not be able to assist you -- these contact channels are for employee use only.
    Thank you for your understanding, as well as for taking the time to post.

  • How to manage database connections

    Hi, I have been trying to find the best way of doing database connections, My application will not be used by many users since its an intranet application used by administrators only to change settings.
    I want to be able to connect to db from a servlet but not have to make the connection all the time, I was thinking of creating my own ContinuousConnection class which basically keeps the connection and all you do is getConnection which checks if the connection is "up" or not, if it is up then just give it as the return value else, just create a new connection since the driver class has already been loaded...if it is null then just load the driver and make the connection.
    this way in differenet functions that i have in the servlet dont have to make connections all the time.
    Is there a better way of doing this?
    I was thinking of putting the connection object in the data section of the servlet, but then it is more or less like static data amongst all threads created to run the servlet and I dont know what would happen if 2 querries are run from the same connection by different serving threads...can someone please explain me this..
    I know a good way of managing connections is using a pool..but i dont know how useful is that here...also i am not very familiar with a pool..can someone please explain me the idea behind it..and how it works...that would be just perfect.
    Thank you very much.
    Ankur

    IIRC to setup tomcat connection pooling when using an Oracle database (for example):
    Add something like this to the server.xml file:
            <Context path="/myProject" docBase="myProject" debug="0"
                     reloadable="true" crossContext="true">
                    <Resource name="jdbc/ORAC" auth="Container" type="javax.sql.DataSource"/>
              <ResourceParams name="jdbc/ORAC">
                <parameter>
                  <name>factory</name>
                  <value>org.apache.commons.dbcp.BasicDataSourceFactory</value>
                </parameter>
                <parameter>
                  <name>driverClassName</name>
                  <value>oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver</value>
                  </parameter>
                <parameter>
                  <name>url</name>
                  <value>jdbc:oracle:thin:@xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:1521:XXXX</value>
                </parameter>
                <parameter>
                  <name>username</name>
                  <value>xxxxx</value>
                </parameter>
                <parameter>
                  <name>password</name>
                  <value>xxxxx</value>
                </parameter>
                <parameter>
                  <name>removeAbandoned</name>
                  <value>true</value>
                </parameter>
                <parameter>
                  <name>logAbandoned</name>
                  <value>true</value>
                </parameter>
                <parameter>
                  <name>maxActive</name>
                  <value>20</value>
                </parameter>
                <parameter>
                  <name>maxIdle</name>
                  <value>10</value>
                </parameter>
                <parameter>
                  <name>maxWait</name>
                  <value>-1</value>
                </parameter>
              </ResourceParams>
            </Context>  This needs to go in between the <Host> ... </Host> tags (probably at the bottom) in the server.xml file (${CATALINA_HOME}/conf). You must put this in the correct place in the xml file or you'll get errors.
    Then you need to add this to your web.xml file:
        <resource-ref>
             <description>Oracle Datasource</description>
             <res-ref-name>jdbc/ORAC</res-ref-name>
         <res-type>javax.sql.DataSource</res-type>
         <res-auth>Container</res-auth>
        </resource-ref>Again this needs to go in the correct place (as per the dtd)
    Then to get a connection:
    final Context initContext = new InitialContext();
    final DataSource ds = (DataSource) initContext.lookup("java:/comp/env/jdbc/ORAC");
    final Connection conn = ds.getConnection();You probably want to wrap getting these connections in a class (i.e. with a getConnection method). And remember to close the connections when you've finished with them.

  • P6 8.3 Professional - how to backup database connections?

    Is there a way?

    Hello Daniel,
    this is how my Path=E:\instantclient_11_2;...... variable looks like. I have put tnsnames.ora and sqlnet.ora in E:\instantclient_11_2 and this is how
    TNS_ADMIN=E:\instantclient_11_2 looks like.
    Contents of tnsnames.ora
    # tnsnames.ora Network Configuration File: E:\app\Administrator\product\11.2.0\dbhome_1\network\admin\tnsnames.ora
    # Generated by Oracle configuration tools.
    ORACLR_CONNECTION_DATA =
      (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS_LIST =
          (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC1521))
        (CONNECT_DATA =
          (SID = CLRExtProc)
          (PRESENTATION = RO)
    ORCL =
      (DESCRIPTION =
        (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 172.16.3.27)(PORT = 1521))
        (CONNECT_DATA =
          (SERVER = DEDICATED)
          (SERVICE_NAME = orcl)
    Contents of sqlnet.ora
    # sqlnet.ora Network Configuration File: E:\app\Administrator\product\11.2.0\dbhome_1\network\admin\sqlnet.ora
    # Generated by Oracle configuration tools.
    # This file is actually generated by netca. But if customers choose to
    # install "Software Only", this file wont exist and without the native
    # authentication, they will not be able to connect to the database on NT.
    SQLNET.AUTHENTICATION_SERVICES= (NTS)
    NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH= (TNSNAMES, EZCONNECT)
    still the same error
    Database connection failed: Error Message:
    Bad public user name or password. Cannot load OCI DLL: oci.dll;
    I tried both ORCL and //172.16.3.27:1521/ORCL as connection strings.
    should instant client used be 32 bit as well?
    regards, Prasad
