Question about iDisk Public Folder Security

Is it possible to determine which folders in my iDisk's Public Folder are accessible to certain people.
I am directing different people to my Public Folder, so I want some folders to be off limits to some, but accessible to others.
Is that possible?
Thanks

In addition to what QTK says, note that the whole issue becomes moot in a few months.  In June, I believe, Apple has said that MobileMe will disappear, taking with it things like your iDisk.  You'd be better off starting to use something else now, rather than learning new things about the iDisk that will be irrelevant soon.  Dropbox is an excellent alternative.

  • Looking for the Mac OS 9 iDisk Public Folder icon

I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I'm creating an icon set of Mac OS 9 icons for OS X. I've been able to locate the regular iDisk icon, as it's stored in the Mac OS 9 "System" file. But, what I can't seem to locate is the iDisk Public folder icon. I found a pic of what it looks via Google Images:

If anyone could help me out, that'd be awesome

    Hi, Alex -
If you are accessing iDisk while booted to OS 9, you are probably using the utility Goliath to do so.
The icon you reference looks much like those in the set used by Goliath, which can be found in the icl8 resource in the Goltiath program.
Tip - in OS 9, when you copy-paste an icon to a folder to give the folder a custom icon, an invisible file named "icon" is created and placed in the folder. This invisible file contains the "icl" family of resources for the custom icon. This resource is easily opened using ResEdit, and perhaps by other icon manipulation utilities, and eliminates a lot of the clutter associated with opening a program in ResEdit to get to the icl resources.
Because of changes to the icon formats ResEdit itself no longer works well in OS 9.1 and later for alteration or modification of an icon. However, there is a utility that will allow you to create custom icons or modify existing ones -

  • Share iMovie 08 files via iDisk Public Folder

Does anybody know the best way to share iMovie files via the public folder of my iDisk? I'm trying to share videos of HS football games using this method. The files are 250-400 MB in size. Anyone have any ideas?

You would send the "link" to your QuickTime file stored in your iDisk Public folder.
    The URL syntax would be:
    http://homepage.mac.com/accountname/.Public/filename/fileextension.
Ask your visitors to copy (don't click) on the link. Then open QuickTime Player and "Open URL" (File menu) and paste the URL.
One of mine as an example:
    http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster/.Public/RedneckTexasChristmas.mov
You can also use simple XML syntax to create a QuickTime Media Link file that allows more features (full screen, autoplay and quit when done and even embed URL "links" into the file.
    Another example:
    http://homepage.mac.com/kkirkster/.Public/RedneckTexasChristmas.qtl
Clicking the link above will download a very tiny file and then link to the source video (and the additional features).

  • How to mp3files, from iTunes, to iDisk public folder etc.

    Greetings:
I need to upload unedited sound files to my .mac iDisk public folder for download from the sound editors.
How do I do this from iTunes. When I drag & drop, it goes through the motions of copying the files from iTunes, to the iDisk folder, yet nothing is actually transferred.
It is necessary to use iTunes because FCP will not compress in MP3, and the zipped aiff, although appearing as 4.9mb, is not allowed by iDisk (2G) as being 'too large of a file."
    Suggestions are appreciated. Thank you.

    Nordicdogs
    1. First export the music file to the desktop, then try move it to the iDisk.
    2. The 'to large a file' message can occur if the File Permissions are screwed up. However, fixing permissions with Disk Utility only works with System Files, so Download BatchMod from
    http://macchampion.com/arbysoft/
And apply it to the iTunes Music Folder.

  • IDisk Public folder access

I'm attempting to give others browser access to my public folder. Everything works per the directions below except that the public folder password doesn't work. It's necessary to use my dot-Mac password to reach my public folder! Has anyone else seen this?
"Mac or Windows users who are not MobileMe members can access your iDisk by opening a web browser and entering: public.me.com/[YourMemberName], and if necessary, entering your Public folder password."

I have the exact problem mentioned above.
I have changed my System Preferences — MobileMe — iDisk — Your iDisk Public Folder — Password-protect your public folder PASSWORD to a NEW PASSWORD that is not my ACCOUNT PASSWORD and it won't take.
I have tried to access my public folder with the NEW PASSWORD but it only responds to my ACCOUNT PASSWORD.
I've reset it the password many times, restarted many times and have tried accessing the public folder through Safari and Firefox.
I'd prefer to have a separate password for my public folder.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

  • Idisk public folder won't sync on .mac site

Help my local idisk used to sync perfectly to the main idisk mac site via my public folder, until I recently changed over from a dial up to wireless internet connection. Now isyn works ok, but I cannot upload anything from my local idisk public folder to the main idisk website on .mac.
Anyone with any suggestions would be welcome?
If it helps in any way, I could no longer receive e-mail on my mac.com e-mail address either as the wireless server and .mac settings are not compatible. So now I have to forward all my .mac.com e-mails to my g-mail address which downloads normally into entourage! I think this issue is probably linked to why my idisk won't work, but don't know how to fix it.
    Thanks for any help

  • Idisk public folder with password inaccessible via Safari

My idisk public folder is password protected.
No one (at least using a Mac) can access it using Safari.
They can, however, access it from a Mac using FireFox. (I haven't tried IE).
Is this a known bug. I recall it happening pre-Leopard, as well, so I don't think it's Leopard specific.

  • Can i connect to my idisk public folder and download?

is this possible? i want to download some mp3s in my public folder or documents

    Jullian,
So you have to mount your iDisk on your desktop and go directly to it with something like Air Share? I've always just worked with a transfer folder on my hard drive/desktop. Will this let you access ALL levels of files on your iDisk - not just your public folder?
I wonder what new capabilities Apple is talking about getting for accessing your iDisk from a iPhone/touch.

  • I have a question about my Apple ID security questions that I don't remember?

Alright, so I don't know my security question answers. However i can buy things from the app store/whatever, i just want to know them. Because when I go to "Manage my apple ID" and i log in and go to the Password and Security section of it, thats where it asks me for my answers to the security questions. So, for future reference if i need go change something on my apple ID in terms of Password/Security I need to know my security questions answers. Thats why i want to know them, even though it isn't a problem right now.
So with that said, I know i have to call apple support to reset my security questions because i do not have a rescue email with the security questions, and the link of course doesn't show up under where its supposed to be.
So my point is, i was wondering if when i call apple support to ask about this (i already set it up for me to call them when I'm ready) if I'm gonna get charged money for calling them just so they can reset my security questions? Or is this free to do? Since its just security questions issue again? If i have to pay to talk to them i won't do it. I only want to know them again cause last time i reset them my dad called, i think, anyways i don't remember them and i doubt my dad will remember the answers. We might have wrote it down but i don't know where that paper is now. Thank you.

  • Question about Sent Mail folder contents

    Hi Everyone.
this question requires a fair amount of background -- I tried my usually very helpful users' group and didn't get any responses. Here's the story:
I upgraded my macbook pro to Leopard partly because I thought Time Machine would make me backup more regularly (it has). I have a few sporadic backups from prior to the upgrade, and then I backed up right before I upgraded. I had a disk error during my first attempt at an archive & install, found that the disk was wiped, thanked my lucky stars I backed up beforehand, ran disk utility on the disk, and then did an erase & install instead.
After the upgrade, I used the migration assistant to restore my user account from my backup. At some point after the fact, I noticed that my sent mail mailbox in mail.app for my primary email account was missing all my emails except for the period from 3/30/05 to 4/15/05 and from 1/07 to 4/07.
I thought I was hosed, but today I found I had another backup on a second disk, and that one has 10,614 emails in the sent mail folder (to be precise Sent Message (account name).mbox/Messages/). After importing, I have all of those sent emails restored in a folder in mail.app.
However, during this process, I went and checked my Sent Messages mailbox in my current Library folder for this user account. In that folder (Library/Mail/Mailboxes/Sent Messages (this account).mbox), all of the files (content_index, Incoming_Mail, IncomingTable_ofContents, mbox, and tableofcontents) show an incorrect(?) created / modified / Last opened date of 5/26/05. The Info.plist file has the correct dates, and the Messages folder does, too. Those same files are in the Sent Messages folder on both of my backups, and have the same date (5/26/05) listed.
I actually pulled all of the files listed above with the weird dates and removed them from the Sent Messages.mbox folder. That doesn't seem to matter to mail -- everything still seems to be working just fine.
So, my question is, are those files crucial, or are they cruft from multiple generations of OS updates and mail.app updates that are no longer needed? It seems like no new versions were automatically generated when I removed the old ones, and mail doesn't seem to be broken.
I've been using mail.app at least since 2004 and the emails in the sent mail folder trace back to a Pbook G4 that started with OS X 10.1 (maybe even 10.0 -- my memory isn't as good as it used to be) and was upgraded with each major release, then I migrated to the current MacBook Pro and upgraded it from Tiger to Leopard. So I've probably used the migration assistant (or archive & install) to help me move files (or did it manually) through one laptop changed and four OS upgrades.
Any ideas about this Sent Messages question or in general about how I might clean up my Mail folder are appreciated.
    Thanks!

I have both POP and IMAP email accounts.
The IMAP is easy. Until you delete it is visible on both phone and computer. Once you delete it is gone from both, although with providers like Google, you can still un-delete it. Google, among others, provides free IMAP email.
For POP, there is a setting in Entourage preferences, (maybe in mail.app, too) that will let you decide to automatically delete the mail from the server, manually delete the mail from the server, or automatically delete after a period of time. I set my pop account to automatically delete from the server after one month. You set up the iPhone the same way - to leave it on the server. This way, a message will download to both your computer and to the iPhone. If you are working at your computer, you can still manually delete the message from the server so that it does not go to your iPhone, since you have already handled it. But even if you never delete from the server, it will automatically delete in a month so that you do not go over your email limit (if any) for your ISP.
Also, with my POP account, I set up the phone to automatically send a copy to me of all outgoing messages. This way my computer has a copy of everything I send from the phone.

  • A question about CREATE PUBLIC DATABASE LINK and ORA-12154 error

    Dear all,
I have a problem about public database link creation and I would appreciate if you could kindly give me a hand. I have the following connection parameters in my
    tnsnames.ora file:
    DGPAPROD.WORLD =
         (DESCRIPTION =
           (ADDRESS_LIST =
            (ADDRESS = (COMMUNITY=tcp.world)
              (PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=ORASR001)(PORT=1521)
           (CONNECT_DATA = (SID = DGPAPROD))
...Having the above mentioned parameters I can connect to this remote database directly in a SQL*Plus shell:
$ sqlplus username/[email protected] works pretty well and the connection is established without any problem.
Now, what I would like to do is to create a public database link to this remote database in order to avoid the user/connection switching for viewing the
content of this database. I proceeded according to the syntax indicated in the Oracle online documentation:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/server.111/b28286/statements_5005.htm#SQLRF01205
Therefore I run the following in order to create a public database link
CREATE PUBLIC DATABASE LINK SR001_dblink CONNECT TO user IDENTIFIED BY password USING 'DGPAPROD.WORLD';Apparently there is no error and the link is created successfully. However it cannot resolve the remote host and whenever I run the following query
(myenterprise is the name of a table in that remote database)
    SELECT *
    FROM myenterprise@SR001_dblink
    ERROR at line 1:
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specifiedWhat causes this problem?
    Thanks in advance,
    Kind Regards,

You must have defined DGPAPROD.WORLD in tnsnames.oar on server where you DB is runnig.Hello there,
Thanks a lot for this nice solution. In fact I had to add the connection parameters into the tnsnames.ora file of the server on which the link was created (not the tnsnames.ora of my oracle client stored on the localhost)
After a bit googling I found another solution that allows to create the database link:
CREATE PUBLIC DATABASE LINK SR001_dblink CONNECT TO user IDENTIFIED BY password USING '(DESCRIPTION =  (ADDRESS_LIST =  (ADDRESS = (COMMUNITY=tcp.world)
    (PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=ip_adresse)(PORT=1521)))(CONNECT_DATA = (SID = GPAPROD)))';Thanks a lot for your help!

  • Question about the shared folder when backing up audio

Hello, kind Mac folk. I've read a lot about using Itunes to backup Itunes libraries onto multiple CD-R's and it seems that, right now, this is the best option for me. However, I've also read that it's a good idea to also backup the "users/shared" folder from the HD because it contains some invisible information regarding the authentication of music that I purchased using my .Mac/Itunes account. So is it possible to burn this folder in the same burning project I'll use accross the CD-R's on which my tunes will go? Or do I need to place this folder in a burn folder and back it up that way? And, if the latter is the only way possible, will it matter that the information is on a separate disc if I ever need to restore or upgrade my hardware? Thanks so much for your help and advice.
    Austin

If you create your backup CD-Rs from within iTunes, it's not possible to include the Shared folder.
You have to burn that folder as a separate project.
The size of the folder can be fairly large (mine is about 1.9 GB) depending on the applications and specific use of your computer.
If your only goal is to save the authorization info in case of a HD crash or other failure, it won't help. After repair of a logic board or changing RAM, you will be asked to authorize again anyway.
Take a look at this article
The authorization info is stored in the 'SC Info.sidb' file inside the 'SC Info' folder in Shared.
You can 'unhide' invisible files by tools like Tinkertool or OnyX (you can find them on versiontracker.com)
    Hope this helps.

  • A few questions about internet sharing and security

Hi, I have an iMac connected to my aparment complexes' wireless network. I realize this isn't the safest way to be online so I was wondering what I could do to protect my computer. When I open a finder window I see all the other computers listed in the "shared computers" menu and this makes me nervous that mine is showing up in others' finders as well. I would like to know how I can prevent everyone else from seeing my computer on our shared network, and possibly prohibit those that still can see my computer from getting access to it. Sounds a little perinoid I know, but it just bothers me to know people have potential access to my files and such. Also I have an Apple tv and wireless printer. I was wondering if there was a way to connect my own wireless router to my iMac (via the ethernet port) directly so that I would have an exclusive (to me and possibly my roomates) connection to wirelessly print, transfer media to/from the Appletv, and rent and buy things from the Appletv online, but also stay connected to the internet. I hope that wasn't confusing, but would appreciate any ideas.

    jbloc,
Well, the main problem for you is that you are on what is essentially a "public" network. As far as your Mac is concerned, however, all you need to do is turn your Firewall on and not run any services. It is only when you might run some service that your computer would show up in someone else's Finder (if it is another Mac), or in the "Network" window (in Windows).
Even when you do have services running, other users must have the proper credentials in order to gain access to those services.
Really, the only way to completely protect yourself and firewall your entire network would be to subscribe to some broadband service on your own, and have your router connected to whatever modem is supplied. The router would then be protecting your entire network, and only your devices would be connected. You would be the only one to see and potentially access those devices. Otherwise, you just have everything left out on a public network, and you would be dependent solely on the security you are able to set up.
    Scott
