Question about installing and removing Windows on Mac OS X

Forgive me for asking this because the answer is probably extremely simple, but I just wanted to make sure.
If I use Boot Camp to install windows XP or 7 onto my Mac (OS X), then if I choose to remove windows and repartition my mac into one hard drive will it be the same as if I had not installed windows at all? Will I be losing any space on my computer once Windows is removed? Thanks! I'm still new to macs....and computers for the most part ha....

  • Question about installing Snow Leopard on a Mac Mini

I'm in the process of installing Snow Leopard on a Mac Mini, but it's taking forever. It's been installing for well over 2 hours now and still indicates an hour left to install. Is this unusual? I'm getting a little concerned. What do I do if I have to cancel the install? Do I have to start from scratch again?

    How about this:
    1. If necessary start up from the external HD & verify that everything is working right & all your files are intact on it.
    2. Clone from the external to internal HD.
    3. Start up from the internal HD & verify as in #1 that everything works as expected.
    4. Install Snow Leopard on the external HD. If that completes successfully, restart from it & verify as above.
5.a. If that all checks out, clone the external back to the internal HD & you are done.
5.b. If that fails, you still have the internal HD with your working copy of 10.5.8 to use while you try to figure out what is going wrong.
The main benefit of this is you always have one working installation to fall back on no matter what happens.

  • Support validity question about installing and configuring SP13 on same machine as FAST to use both as search engines for SP2010

    Hi,
I have a SharePoint 2010 farm which is using its own servers.
This farm has a FAST Search for SharePoint server which is a standalone on a dedicated server.
This farm is my testing staging environment and not a Production environment, eventhough its almost an exact copy of the Production farm.
I would like to replace the FAST server with SharePoint 2013 as a search engine for my SharePoint 2010 farm.
Because i have a standalone deployment of FAST on a dedicated server and i dont have any more servers to add to this farm,
I would like to install SharePoint 2013 on same server as FAST while FAST is still active, connect it to the 2010 farm and do some tests before i will remove the FAST content and query SSA's.
I would like to know if installing a SP2013 on same machine as FAST is supported by Microsoft as long as the FAST is not connected to the SP2013? (performance is not an issue)
What about All in one machines like development servers, is it supported by Microsoft to install FAST on same machine as SP2010 farm? (again, performance is not an issue)
    thanks,
    Guy

I would like to know if this scenario is supported by microsoft.
This installation will be for testing purposes only, if there are any issues with installing SharePoint2013 on a FAST search machine, i would like to know what kind of problems i may run into.
I'd also like to clear out that this FAST and SharePoint2013 are not comunicating with eachother but with a SharePoint2010 farm that is configured on different servers.
I would really appreciate direct answers to these questions.
    thanks for your answers,
    Guy

  • HT1338 Question about installing Lion on an older Mac, can anyone help?

i have a late 2006 iMac that I am giving to my daughter. I upgraded to Snow Leopard, OS X 10.6.8 but am concerned about going to Lion. I read that to install Mountain Lion you need to have an early '07 Mac.  I read here that someone had installed Lion on an '06. I know that it must have at least 2 GB of memory and need to upgrade from the 1 GB that is on the '06.  Don't want to spend the money on the additional memory if I am not going to be able to download and run Lion OS.  Can anybody help me on this?

Apple - OS X Mountain Lion - Read the technical specifications.
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion
    iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
The above are the facts. You cannot install Mountain Lion on a non-qualifying model. What you've read about probably is about installations of the Developer Preview 1. However, that stopped with the subsequent releases including this release.
You may be able to run Lion on the computer if it's a Core 2 Duo model. Lion will require at least 2 GBs of RAM. However, we aren't sure about where you can buy Lion, but customers may be able to purchase a copy from Apple's online store's telesales agents.[1-800-MY-APPLE (1-800-692-7753) or Customer Service and Sales Support at 1-800-676-2775.]

  • How to install Windows on MAC? (Can't see the check box "Install or remove Windows 7 or later version" on Boot Camp Assistant)

I want to install Windows 7 on my MBP mid 2012 but in Boot Camp does not appear the check box: "Install or remove Windows 7 or later version". I continued with making the USB bootable with Windows 7 but then when I restart and boot with the USB I still can't install Windows because then I receive an error: ""Windows cannot be installed on this disk. The selected disk is of GPT partition style."
From OS with Boot Camp I didn't manage to make a partition for Windows instead I made one with Disk Utility (formated FAT).
After booting from USB that partition was also formated into NTFS necessary for Windows. Still the same error.
Any idea how to install Windows on my MAC?

My Windows copy is a X64.
MBP mid 2012 with Mountain Lion 10.8.3.

If you are refering to this I tried to update the EFI version (I see only SMC version 2.9 as a diferrence of what I have)  but on installing I received an error: "This software is not supported on your system."

  • Is it possible to install and run Windows Server 2008 on a Mac Mini Server in a Virtual Machine software like Parallels

I am wondering if it is possible to install and run Windows Server 2008 on a Mac Mini Server as a VM as my main application uses Windows VisualBasic and Fox Pro and requires a Static IP to connect to it, My other offices connects to Windows Server via RDP.
Basically I am researching a Server for the same purpose and since Mac Mini and OsX both are robust in nature it can fit the bill if every thing work fine.
    Thanks

    From the Parallels website:
    32-bit Operating Systems
Windows 8 with: Windows 8, 8.1 (when available)
    Windows 7 SP1
    Windows Vista SP0, SP1, SP2
    Windows Server 2008 R2, SP2, SP1, SP0
    64-bit Operating Systems
    Windows 8
    Windows 7 SP1
    Windows Vista SP0, SP1, SP2
    Windows Server 2012
    Windows Server 2008 R2, SP2, SP1, SP0
I do suggest that you upgrade RAM to at least 8gig
    if you haven't already.
FWIW, I currently use Win8/64 bit with Parallels on a 2011 Mini Server
using the windows environment for engineering applications and have
had no issues.  I am running Mountain Lion but do not have the
    Server app installed.

  • A few questions about MacBooks and Parallels Desktop.

I have a few questions about MacBooks and Parallels Desktop.
    1) I understand I need at least 1GB of RAM to run Parallels Desktop but what about the hard drive, is the stock 60GB drive big enough?
    2) Related to question 1, even if it was big enough to allow me to install and run Windows would the 60GB drive be enough if I wanted to install a Linux distribution as well?
    3) This has nothing to do with Parallels Desktop but thought I'd ask it here anyway, do Apple Stores carry just the stock MacBooks, or do they carry other configurations?
    Thanks
    Keith

    1. Depend on how intensive you use that HD for saving data on both Mac OS and XP. For standard installation on both OS X and XP, the space of 60 Gb is enough.
    2. Same answer as no 1. You can install all three on that HD space, but the extra spacce available will be less and less for your data. You can save your data on external or back up on cd/dvd and erase it from the HD to keep the free space.
Remember to leave at least 2 or 3 Gb for virtual memory usage.
    3. Just call them, maybe they don't have it in store stock, but by appointment they might configure one for you before your pick-up date.
    Good Luck

    I have a Macbook Pro june 2011... I have 8GB ram but I only have 256mb VRAM...
I've read some other questions about this and I realized... Why do I not have 560mb of VRAM since I have 8GB of RAM?
Is there any way to get more VRAM to play games on steam?
I've learned  by reading other topics that I can't upgrade my graphics card on my Macbook Pro because it's soldered into the motherboard or somthing like that, but please tell me if there is any way to get more video ram by chaning some setting or upgrading something else. I'd also like to know why I only have 256MB of VRAM when I have 8GB of RAM, since I have 8GB of RAM I thought I was supposed to have 560mb of VRAM...
    So the two questions are...
Is there any way to upgrade my VRAM, so that I can play games on steam?
Why do I only have 256MB VRAM when I have 8GB total RAM?
    Other Info:
    I have a quad core i7 Processor.
My graphcics card is the AMD Radeon HD 6490M.
I am also trying to play games on my BOOTCAMPed side of my mac, or my Windows 7 Professional side.
THANK YOU SO MUCH IF YOU CAN REPLY,
    Dylan

The only two items that a user can change on a MBP are the RAM and HDD (Retinas not included).  You have what the unit came with and the only way you will be able to change that is to purchase a MBP with superior graphics
If you are very much into gaming, the I suggest A PC.  They are far superior for that type of application to a MBP.
    Ciao.

  • The checkbox (Install or remove Windows 7) is disabled in bootcamp.

Hi, I want to get rid of windows that was installed using bootcamp on my early 2011 macbook pro but the checkbox (install or remove windows 7) is disabled in bootcamp. I tried to format the drive using disk utility but failed, It says "couldn't modify partition map". What can I do to remove windows 7 and unite all the data in my HDD into one single partition?

2 things, the option is greyed out because (1) 1st 2 items are unchecked or (2) the USB containing Windows and the drivers is not detected.
The newer 2013 machines seem to be very picky about the Windows install, as keys that worked on 2012 machines would no longer work on the 2013s. If you want a painless install, do this
DL the correct W7 ISO from here http://techverse.net/download-windows-7-iso-x86-x64-microsofts-official-servers/ - SP1 ISOs
Then insert your USB and select all 3 options. The program will copy this new ISO to your USB.
    Only use a USB2 (not USB3) drive

  • Questions about installing a large internal hard drive

    Hello all,
I recently bought a Seagate 250GB internal hard drive for my Power Mac G4 (AGP graphics). I intend to install it alongside my old 20GB drive. I have a couple of questions about installing it:
    • What kind of PCI card do I need in order to use the full capacity of the drive?
    • I'm considering partitioning the drive and installing Debian Linux on one partition. Is it possible that Debian won't recognize the PCI card?
    • Is it possible to connect (RAID?) the old and new drives together so that they appear as one big 270GB drive? Is this a good idea?
    • What is the easiest way to copy the contents of my old drive onto the new one? I'd like an exact copy so that I don't have to reinstall the system and everything else; can Carbon Copy Cloner do that?
Thanks for any help and advice!
Power Mac G4 - AGP graphics   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   768 MB RAM

    • What kind of PCI card do I need in order to use the
    full capacity of the drive?
If the drive is an SATA drive you need an SATA controller. If an IDE/ATA drive you need an IDE controller.
    • I'm considering partitioning the drive and
installing Debian Linux on one partition. Is it
possible that Debian won't recognize the PCI card?
You should check the Hardware Compatibility List for Debian against your potential mac compatible purchases. You might also get some good information from Yellow Dog Linux compatibility lists.
    • Is it possible to connect (RAID?) the old and new
drives together so that they appear as one big 270GB
drive? Is this a good idea?
If you want to stripe the 2 dives together your overall performance will be slowed down by the slower of the two drives. For example, If you have one 5400rpm drive and another 7200rpm drive, the RAID will be bogged down by the slower drive so you wont get the full benefit of the lower latencies of the 7200. You will still get some of the faster transfer times, just not the lower latencies.
Wether or not it's a good idea depends on your personal needs. Do you need a drive that can can move very large files to and from memory quickly (bandwidth) or a drive that can locate and serve up the files quickly (latency)?
    • What is the easiest way to copy the contents of my
old drive onto the new one? I'd like an exact copy
so that I don't have to reinstall the system and
everything else; can Carbon Copy Cloner do that?
CCC should work fine for you. You could also use the command line asr utility.

  • Questions about Installing EBS R12 continued

    Folks,
Hello. This post is the continue for previous post "Questions about Installing EBS R12".
While installing EBS R12 using "./rapidwiz", the Install Wizard gets to "CD Locator - Select root directory of required Rapid Install Disk. Enter location for the disk labeled. Oracle Applications Rapid Install - Database Disk 1"
I browse the directory where Database Disk 1 is located (file name: V15680-01_1of3/oraAPPDB/Disk1). Then click "OK" button, CD Locator Windows come up again and again. The Install Wizard doesn't proceed !
The above issue means some files in stage area directory are corrupted. Thus, I have deleted the stage area directory (zip files and unzipped files) and try to download a fresh EBS R12 from Oracle Edelivery to install again.
Now, the problem is that when I empty trash (EBS_R12) in Oracle Linux 5, the 3 files (V15680-01_1of3.zip, oraAppDB, oraDB) cannot be deleted from the trash, the error message is:
"You don't have permission to modify its parent folder."
The file V15680-01_1of3.zip is Rapid Install Database Disk 1 on which the install Wizard stop while installing EBS R12.
Can any folks help to solve the issue on file "V15680-01_1of3.zip" ?
that is, how to empty it from Trash ? How to have the Wizard go through it when install again ?

Please update the original thread instead of creating new one -- Re: Questions about Installing EBS R12

  • A question about grub and USB

    Hi All
I have a quick question about grub and USB that I can't quite find the answer to by searching.   Most of the FAQs discuss booting a full linux dristribution from USB. My situation is this.  I am getting a new computer with two drives, the second will be arch and the first will be Vista (for my wife).  I want the computer to boot the same way that my wife's machine boots at work so I don't want to install grub on the MBR.  So, is there a way to have all of the grub config files and kernels installed on the second drive and simply install to grub boot loader to the MBR of a USB stick?  My goal would be to simply plug the USB stick into the new PC and boot arch from the second drive.
    Thanks

    i cant say for hp's
havent worked on any in a while
recent machines have been coupleof dell's , vaio & emachine
which dells do offer it at least the ones i tried , my laptop does(dell)
all home pc's are built by me which do offer to boot individual drives
what hp you getting it may tell in specs
are both discs sata? if so it might not offer this option with 2 drives of same interface
check your power supply alot of these preconfigured machines put cheap under reated power supplies in there
    & will burn your motherboard i just replaced PS(250 watt) & mobo(845gvsr) in an emachines <cheap stuff<
i hope you researched the pc before buying ie : mobo, power supply are the biggest concerns
i find it much more benificial to build my own machine gives me peace at mind. the cost is sometimes more in $ but not always , your biggest expense is time researching hardware
if you live in usa the best places to start looking are bensbargains.net & pricewatch.com
i am not affiliated with either & niether sell the hardware they are just advertisers a place to buy
for costomized machines that i would trust is unitedmicro.com theyll asemble & test before shipping
i have gotten 2 machines so far from them with NO PROBLEMS with hardware (knock knock)
you may want to consider this in your next venture for pc

  • 2 question about GPU and Lens correction ,cs5

    Hi
i have 2 questions about Gpu and lens correction in Cs5
    1)Filter->lens correction->search online
i get often and almost every connection time out at the first click on search online , at the second click i get no online profile
    is it normal?
    2) question is about Gpu
it run faster , but talking about ajustament layer
like saturation or vibrance for example
i found with the gpu on , a light slow refresh compared with gpu off
i have set cache  levels 6 ,history 20
    i guess are the defaul
well i add a saturation layer and move the saturation slide ,increase o decrease saturation
with Gpu Off , the changes are immedially , i mean i can see in real time the increase o decrease of saturation
with Gpu On it takes a few(very few) time more
    again is normal ?
don't be angry , i'm going to buy cs5 and i'm unsecure ... the price make a big role
    thanks

For what it's worth, I also see a timeout on the first [ Search Online ] click, after about half a minute delay.  Second click turns up results immediately.  This happens each time Lens Correction is started, even without restarting Photoshop, and in both 32 and 64 bit versions.  Also note that I started with one profile listed by default (though from the wrong camera) for my 40D with 28-135 zoom.
I alsow noticed that I was seeing progress bar activity in the Lens Correction dialog while I was typing this (even though Lens Correction was NOT the active window) every time I hit the 'L' key.  Strange.
    Windows 7 x64.
